Workspace Background missing CS5

Can anyone assist with the following?
I am running CS4 on a mac pro. I have recently downloaded the trial version of CS5. The installation appeared to have installed correctly, indeed it operates quite normally with one exception ....
I can see my desktop through what should be the workspace background. I have all the CS5 menus in the correct places ie at the top of the screen, the tools to left and the palettes to the right but the centre working area is completely transparent so much so that I can see any open programs running. In short if I open CS5 and do nothing at all the workspace background is missing. If I open an image and size it accordingly CS5 appears visually quite normal until I close the image when the desktop can once again be seen.
I have tried resetting the workspace. I have tried all the pre loaded workspaces each provides the same problem. I have 'Googled' this issue without success.

Nice to meet you. My first Mac was a IIcx. Is that "long-time" enough?
I'm fully capable of understanding when marketing mumbo-jumbo is being pushed. But I'm more inclined to believe an actual Photoshop developer than groundless conspiracy theories from someone in a forum. Why would Adobe need to market this feature? No reasonable customer is going to return a Photoshop Mac license, return their Mac and go back to using Windows because they are susprised by being able to see through to the desktop. Adobe has nothing to gain from this feature, except what John Nack described.
UIs are not designed to cater to an imaginary mass migration. UIs are designed to improve productivity.
To think Adobe is trying to help a migration from one platform to another is insanity. The relationship between Apple and Adobe is no better than the relationship between Microsoft and Adobe. Adobe does not care what platform you use. They do not sell OS's.
You clearly did not read Nack's full post or else you would have noticed the discussion of apps outside the Adobe realm. There are plenty of Mac apps that use the full screen... even before OSX. Kai, anyone? If you are so put off by this idea, you may want to invest in incontinence apparel prior to upgrading to Lion, which will offer even more fullscreen apps.
A return tip... just because people might read your posts... doesn't mean you are in any way believed.

Does the Fill Workspace Background function still exist in any way?
I could make it such that I could see my desktop (or whatever was open behind my file) when I was using Elements 6.
    Thanks and best.

Hey, thanks kindly for the assistance.
    That is highly disappointing.
Do you happen to know if the feature remains for PS CC? I have CS5, too, and this feature exists, I wonder if it has continued in this line...
    Thanks again.

  • How to un-fill workspace background, PSE 8 for Mac

I just bought v. 8 for Mac, and there is no checkbox in Prefs to get rid of the 'fill workspace background', its keeping me from using v. 8, as I cannot see my desktop.
Here is a screenshot to show what is wrong,

If you can help me get rid of this annoying thing, I will be very happy to use the new version,

    Hi Barbara,
Thank you!   Weve been struggling with this, they sure fooled me by changing the way to do it.
I would think that Fill Workspace would be better working than Application Frame, as it sure isnt a frame in my book.
But you saved the day for us, as you always do!
2 more interesting things, when I use this forum with Firefox 3.5.5 for Mac or Opera 10.10, when I click Post Message, I get an error message that there is no body to the message, but found that using Safari is the fix for that one.
And Adobe forums would not recognize my old username, email, Adobe ID #, nor my password on this new Mac. I couldnt figure that one out, as it works fine on my old Mac, but this new one, whew, I had to re-sign up. But I am the old Jane from years ago from Cape Cod.

  • Allow reference images to be placed in the workspace background

This isn't a "fix" or anything, just an idea. I'm not sure how you would interact with these images (zoom, etc), but it would be very helpful to be able to place images around the canvas in the actual workspace background. Especially when you're in full screen mode, with the gray area stretching all the way to the edges. This would be a great asset to people using the program from illustration, and would give the feel of actually taping up reference around the artwork. That area isn't used for much at the moment. I'm surprised Adobe hasn't utilized it as a kind of "behind the canvas" pinboard or color mixer or something.

Not an un-interesting proposal – though I wonder what it would mean programming-effort- and file-size-wise.
Personally I’d rather see a feature like »layer as guide« where a Layer’s pixel content on the canvas can be kept visible while working in Photoshop but would appear neither in the Preview and flattened copies nor be accessible in layout applications.

  • Background missing when export to PDF CS5.5

    Hi,
I have seen some similar posts (all non-current) to the one I am writing however, my issues are not solved by the solutions posted in previous discussions.
My problem is that when I am exporting an IND file to PDF, when I open the PDF all of my background images are missing. In most examples this is a full page black box. But since testing this problem I have encountered the same issue with any colour and some photographs.
I am working in CS5.5, with all software up to date (version 7.5.3)
I have tested this in new documents and old documents that previously would have exported the background.
These items are not on master pages. I have tested this on brand spankin new pages and existing ones (with and without any elements on master pages)
I have tested the boxes with and without transparency.
There is no issue with overprint or the overprint preview check box.
I have tried saving the file as an .IDML and reopening to see if it will 'debug' the file. I have exported the PDF as every kind of option. I have restarted the computer and the program several times. I have checked for new updates.
The only way that I have 'cracked' this issue so far is to break the one large background image into at least 3 overlapping solid boxes. It seems that you cant have any box overlap more than 2 page boundaries.
Is anyone else having this problem or any other advice on what to try.
    Thank you

    Hi Eugene,
The document in question is 1) not using master pages and 2) not using spreads. Its a single page A4 document.
    Hi Peter,
Sorry I am not trying to span two pages. My comment was that the graphic box seems to glitch when it touches more than 2 boundaries of the page ie left right top bottom.
I am using the full creative suite CS5.5, no hacks, no substitute programs.
I have attached a few screen captures.
    Sample file in indesign:
Screen capture when exported to PDF:
split the background box into 2 (i have used 2 blacks so you can see the boundary). Export to PDF:

  • LIVE workspace is missing... or is it? [9.2.0.6.0]

    Dear all
Under Workspace|Workspaces in Enterprise Manager I expect to see "LIVE". This is the case for all my databases except one, which I'll call "AAPSD". Under AAPSD there are no workspaces listed in Enterprise Manager. However, if I connect to SQL*Plus and query the database directly I get this:
    SQL> select dbms_wm.getworkspace from dual;
    GETWORKSPACE
    LIVE
I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling the Oracle Workspace Manager but this has had no effect. I had no interest in workspaces before I discovered that this "missing" LIVE workspace was causing a problem in our MapInfo-based software application.
Any ideas why it's there in SQL*Plus but not Enterprise Manager?
Would be grateful for any advice.
    Thanks
    Stuart

    Hi,
I ran into this situation recently. This can potentially happen when doing a full import/export of a database where the workspace manager version on the exported database does not match the version on the import database.
In database releases since 10.2, the wmsys schema is no longer exported when performing a full database export. When the versions do not match, the procedural actions that are used to import the required data will not be run. As a result, the LIVE workspace will be missing. Since you are on 9.2.0.6, this could also occur due to any other error that prevents the procedural actions from running. You would need to check the import logs to see if this occurred.
If this is what happened in your case, inserting the missing row into the wmsys.wm$workspaces_table table will not completely fix the problem as there is additional metadata that will not be imported.

    Ben

  • Workspace background color : how to change it ?

    Hello,
Is there a way to change the color (a more dark grey) of the background color of the workspace ? I find the one used by PSE4 (and previous versions) too light. I would prefer a more dark grey, like the one used by Photoshop CS2 (and if this one is good, why not the same in PSE4 Mr Adobe ?).
    Best regards,

    > The default colour is an entirely neutral grey
No... for me, a neutral grey is a 50% grey, all backgrounds are about 80% grey (very light).
Kenneth : OK, but it don't works for quick fix and to for the organizer... only for standard edit...

  • Page background missing

    Hi All,
After a successful first website, I tried to create a new one.
While I've defined a gradient page background, about half of the pages show up correctly, but the other ones are missing this page background completely.
Does it sound familiar to one of you?
    Many thanks in advance!
    GJ

What's the URL of your site so we can examine it first hand? Where are you hosting the site and how are you uploading the files?
Note: There are some browsers that do not render the gradient backgrounds as created by iWeb. If you can create a jpg file of the background and use it then all browsers would see it the same.

  • How can I change Dreamweaver editor backgrounds in CS5.5

I've recently upgraded from DW8 and have two small problems with the user interface.
    1) I can't easily read the inactive document tabs on the documents bar (or whatever it is called) because the text is black and the background is dark gray.  Is there a way round this?
    2) In various HTML documents I've got library items for navigation bars where the links are white or #ffffcc.  Dreamweaver marks the library by using a #ffffcc background so they become unreadable in design view.  (Actually it used to do this in Dreamweaver MX and I was so glad it was sorted in DW8).  I've tried changing preferences HTML... Library but this only seems to affect code view.   Is there something I'm missing?
    Thanks

Disable CSS rendering.  View > Style Rendering > un-tick Display Styles.
Or use a Design Time Style Sheet and change your link colors to something darker.

  • White background missing

I'm using Acrobat 9 Pro and recently noticed that when I create a pdf the white background is missing, the file looks like an unflattened psd. I've looked in the preferences and don't see any obvious setting to check/uncheck, any suggestions?

...no that's one of the first things that I checked for, turns out there's a pull-down menu that allows you to add or remove the background which has solved the problem.

  • Strokes in symbols not flattening properly with other background elements (CS5 & CS6)

    Hi There,
We have a bunch of round button symbols for navigational elements which are constructed in the following way:
Circle symbol with a fill and stroke
Circle symbol placed into button symbols (e.g. magnifying glass or arrow)
    Button symbols placed onto page
This allows us to update the background circle symbol and have all the buttons (about 30 of them) update at once.
But when the symbols render on a dark background, they look like badly clear-cut raster images - i.e. the antialiased edges look like they've been flattened on white instead of merging with the background colour like a 24bit png.
Hopefully you can see the kind of bitsy edge in the image below to see what I mean:
I don't recall having this issue in the past - I've fiddled with the stroke settings but still no luck, here are the settings as they currently stand:
Is there a setting that controls this behavior that I might've changed or missed?
    Cheers
    Ben

There's a dirty little secret with 1-pixel strokes: They're not actually center-aligned. (How could they be and still stay sharp?) So your single-pixel stroke is actually aligned to the inside. And it's anti-aliased. What you're most likely noticing is the lightly-colored fill showing through the semi-transparent portions of the stroke.
A couple ideas on how to fix this: a) Set stroke width to 2px, center-aligned, and choose "Fill over stroke" under Stroke Options, b) Leave stroke width at 1px, align outside, and decrease the object dimensions by 1px, c) Set stroke to None and add the stroke using Photoshop Live Effects. Somehow, no matter which position is chosen for stroke alignment within Photoshop Live Effects, fill bleed-through along the outer edges is not a problem. However, every solution will change how the circle is rendered somewhat, so finding the best solution requires trial and error.

  • Saving Workspaces in Illustrator CS5

I am currently running Mac OS 10.6.3 and Illustrator CS5. Every time I change the workspace and save it, it is nowhere to be found let alone loaded. Any solutions?

    Saved workspace file can be found @ "<Curent User>/Library/Preferences/Adobe Illustrator CS5 Settings/en_US/Workspaces".
If you are not finding the saved workspace here and in Windows->Workspace menu of illustrator then try deleting preferences and then launch illustrator.

  • Arial Narrow missing CS5 with Win 7

I found some threads related to this issue but all are related to Win XP.  These "solutions" also seem to require that you be a computer programmer to follow them
Just got a new computer with Win 7 64-bit and just updated to Photoshop/Illustrator CS5.  Arial Narrow font (all varieties) is missing, although I see it in all Microsoft applications.  I have a library full of ads and fliers created, most of which use Arial Narrow.
How can I get it back without having to manually go play in the Windows fonts? (my knowledge of computers outside of graphics software is limited, I don't want to make matters worse by getting into all that).  Is it possibly there but under another name?
    Thank you.

Reinstall CS5 by turning off AV programs(if any).
Have you seen actual evidence that an installation of Photoshop made with any particular antivirus program in force has been corrupted?
AV programs might block installations by detecting false positives, but I haven't seen anyone report that AV has corrupted their Photoshop installation, nor have I heard of one interfering with an installation without actually notifying the user, making it obvious what the problem is.
Advising people to disable their antivirus program is not good practice in general.
If an antivirus program IS interfering with the normal operation of your computer, it's time to consider getting a better quality antivirus program.
