Workstation loosing policies

Hello NG
I have a serious problem with ZCM11 policies
I defined grouppolicies on ZCM 11 and additional Policies for Office. I
explain you how i did configure these policies.
On a windows 7 gpo administration workstation i copied the office2010 admx
files in the c:\Windows\PolicyDefinitions folder. In this case i was able to
configure the Office policies.
With ZCM i created two policies. One for standard configuration, as "hide
standard programs from standar menu" etc etc. the second one was a Office
policiy where i defined different settings for the applications.
I published these policies to OUs. ZCM11 before it upload the policies to
its webserver it will pack these policies as zip file and place somewhere on
the ZCM Server. I suppose, that when the user login to workstation, the
zipfile will be extracted to the workstation with the settings i made....
anyway.....
The problem is the following. The workstations don't have the additional
admx files on the c:\Windows\PolicyDefinition folder. But the policies were
set correct. I mean Office settings and global GPO settings were set.
Yesterday about 10 machines did lost all GPO settings. I checked with
gpedit.msc if there was policies active. None of the definied policies was
active. and all settings were lost.
What could be the cause of this issue?
Ramon

Hello Shaun
When I understand you correctly, the ADMX files are not needet to be copied
on the workstation. Correct?
My second problem. The Policies are effective. The problem was, that the
workstations did have the policies, then at once, during user were working,
the workstation did loose the policies. Have a look on these two policies
On the GPO on ZCC I don't have some Message logs.

Ramon,
2 different issues: ADMX (and ADM) files are necessary for gpedit to
create the settings, they are not needed for the policy to be applied.
So, to the second problem - your policies not applying, have you
checked that the policy shows as effective? Have you looked at the
status in ZCC?

  • Workstation Lockdown policies

We have a Workstation Lockdown policy file for each of our branch
locations and then associate all of our users at our different branches
to the policy. It is to be distributed upon login. Many times policies
are not put in place, for example "do not show the Run... option",
Disable Control Panel, etc. The other piece that is not working is
setting IE Home page to our companies internal website. Most of the
time when users open up IE it tries to go to Dell, MSN, Microsoft or
whatever and they get a 403 Forbidden error (BorderManager 3.8 & Client

How can I make sure that policies are getting distributed to PC's to
    lock then down?

  • Workstation Group Policies & WSUS

We are trying to apply group policies to workstation groups. The policy we are applying works perfectly when it is applied to user policies. But, when we apply them to the workstations it does not stick.
For example the one we want to get running properly is the WSUS configuration. It is applied to the machines, they even see it in wmsched. When the computers are logged in the WSUS policy is in effect, we can see the windows update settings grayed out while the Application Launcher is spinning. After the workstation is finished loading, the WSUS settings go away.
We can manually run them in wmsched and have it apply. But, automatically it doesn't work properly. We have followed directions, even played with the search policy settings, but nothing is working properly.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

That sounds like a Policy Package scheduled "User desktop is active", or a
Fore Run Application Object, is changing the GPO settings.

  • How to restrict group of workstations

    Zenworks 3.2 sp2 & WinXP Novell Client 4.9sp2
User policy for Staff/Faculty accounts gives them DLU accounts wiht the
Admininstrator's rights - the main reason is the fact that they use PCs
mainly in the offices. Volatile User Cache is set to 366 days on office PCs.
Students get Limited DLU accounts and public PCs have Workstation
Manager configured to non-volatile accounts (Cache is unchecked).
Unfortunately some faculties treat public lab PCs as their own and they
install whatever they desire on the lab PCs (why not ? since they have
    all the rights, right?)
I wonder if I could somehow restrict staff/faculty access on those
    workstations through policies.
    TIA
    Andrzej

Well, I'm afraid there is no better solution. As long as they are
"Administrators" on the public PCs they WILL mess them up. There is very
little you can do about that (such as disabling Start->Run, regedit,
setup.exe, etc.) and it will have limited effect.

  • Several Group policies on user

Is it possible to have several windows group policies on a user?
If it is a general gpo associated to the container, and a another to a user
or a group a user is member of, which one will be the effective? The closest
to the user or a mix of all of them?
I have done like that and get strange errors.

  • Workstations keep reimporting

I'm having trouble controlling which container workstations import into. My workstation import policies specify that workstations should be created in the user's container. However, once a workstation is imported into the proper container, it reimports into the container of the next user! It does this even if the second container has no import policy associated with it, or is not listed as one of the containers where rights are needed to create workstations.
What, on a workstation is telling it it needs to be imported or not?
    Thanks!

My guess is that somebody has built a script somewhere that is doing
some behinds the scene unregistration and re-registration.
Once a device is registered, it will not unregister or move itself
    automatically.
You may want to check to make sure that AutoMatic Workstation Cleanup is
not set to aggressively, which would cause a workstation to unregister.
I believe by default it's 90 days of a device being off before it
    unregisters a PC.

  • Disable an open dns

I currently have a Netware 6.5 sp8 dns server and an OES11 DNS server. As I am migrating way from Netware (tough to do because it simply works!) I have moved all of my dhcp and dns over to the OES11 box with the Netware box as a backup. I need to shut down this open dns for obvious reasons. But when I turn recursion to off, my workstations loose dns.
I would like to set my network up to use the OES11 box as a primary dns and the Netware box to secondary. I have a few questions.
    Disable recursion
what settings do I configure the SLES network card dns to? Do I point them to my isp DNS or does sles need to be pointed to itself?
when I set recursion to "no" how do I allow my workstations, on multiple vlans use the server for DNS?
Does there need to be a forwarder?
    Suggestions

Disabling recursion on OES is a matter of editing the /etc/named.conf. It isn't done on the network card. See the man page for the specifics.
Where you point to is a matter of what you want to resolve. I ALWAYS point to my ISP, but if my server is handling specific zones, I also point to it.
If you are disabling all recursion, then you disable forwarding. They will need to be able to query someone. I would add the my ISP's dns servers.
You can allow recursion from some clients/subnets if you wish, you don't have to disable it for every one.

Inventory process would go like this.
Workstation manager see's that it is the same tree, ok then apply thepolicies | workstation import checks to see if there is information
    the
    the HKLM/software/novell/workstation manager/identification key |
    see's
that this already contains workstation and tree information | updatesworkstation object were it was first imported to.
If there is not any workstation information in
    HKLM/software/novell/workstation manager/identification | then will
import to which ever effective policies specifies.
Here is some documentation on the process.

  • Active Directory - Lingering Objects

    Hello,
I'm having an issue with replication and I'm hoping someone can point me in the right direction.
I have the Strict Replication setting enabled on all of my DCs.  I am running into a problem with replication failures due to lingering objects.  I ran repldiag.exe /removelingeringobjects /advisorymode on one of the DCs and it found 52 objects.
However, the lingering objects are shared printer objects that are still in use in my organization.  What would be the impact of deleting these printer objects?  Would my workstations loose the ability to print to these printers?
    Thank you.

  • Local GPT.ini not updating

    Hello Everyone,
I am having some issues with the current project i am on.  I need to replicate local group policies to all local workstation (100+) so i can launch a specific script at startup.
I already have it working when i manually create the policy via
gpedit.msc on the local machines but when i try to copy the files/folders within c:\Windows\System32\GroupPolicy to another workstation the policies do not apply! ( i am copying the folders, gpt.ini and Registry.pol
    files)
Running gpupdate /f on the workstation and multiple reboots
    did not apply the policies.
After the copy and reboots i can run gpedit.msc and it shows the correct policy setting i need, but it is still not taking effect.
I am finding that i need to go back into gpedit.msc and undo then re-do the settings, then the GPO was saved and gpupdate /f applied, then all policies in the set
    would apply.
The only thing i see differently is the gpt.ini files show different version numbers.  Could this be my problem?  Any suggestions on how to resolve this are welcome.  thanks

    > workstation the policies do not apply! ( i am copying the folders,
    > gpt.ini and Registry.pol files)
if you copy gpt.ini to a different workstation that already HAS a
gpt.ini, you MUST ensure that the new gpt.ini has higher version numbers
(the version is a 32 bit number. the lower 16 bit are the computer
version, the higher 16 bit are the user version). Otherwise the computer
will recognize that in the past, he applied version 25 eg, and now you
provided version 16 which is donwlevel and will not apply.

  • Help a bonehead - ZfD server modules for desktop agents?

Ok guys, I have to be honest I was really versed on ZfD but it has been a good number of years since I've really touched it. Here is what is going on, we are migrating fully to OES2 SLES10/OES11 and removing all our Netware servers over time. We are at a point where we can retire 2 of our 3 remaining Netware servers if ZfD doesn't require them. We are in the process of also going to Windows 7 on all workstations, we'll use ZCM 11 for them. Here is my question....
What does the Windows Desktop Agents rely on for user related policies? Does it connect to eDirectory directly and read the policies? In other words we have Windows XP Pro workstations running the ZFD Agents. We are only are using the user associated policies for DLU(mandatory remaining profiles) and user associated group policies. We'd like to keep these running and if memory serves they don't call any specific NLMs on the Netware servers, they just read eDirectory for their information.
Is this correct? Please be kind, my ZfD 7 knowledge is simply fading away. Thanks.
    -Nyle

    Thanks Craig,
I really appreciate the confirmation. That is what I had thought but you know what assuming does. We aren't using any software bundles or Workstation assigned policies only user policies so it sounds like we should be good to go.
Only one more Netware 6.5sp8 server to go, I'm kind of sad to see the end of such a reliable legacy. I hope that Novell can infect the Linux side of the house with the idea that with power, management complexity doesn't have to be the norm. 8^D

Workstation Import Service is not required, though not having it is a

#1 - You cannot assign Bundles/Policies directly to Devices, only uses.
    Duh :>
#2 - The System Account will not have any File Rights for running User

However, you could run the bundle as Logged on User or 1st copy the
files local and then run an install as System.

  • Webcam dilemma.....codec?

    Hi guys,
I have a problem that has me pulling my hair out. I have been using webcams, specifically, the Logitech C910 High definition camera. I have been using them in our documentary wherein our subjects record the footage on their end and then send us the files.
Now that I have the footage, I am attempting to import it into Premiere cs 5.5. In doing so, it slows my high end rig significantly and then ultimately, crashes.
The codec that the camera uses is:
Video: wmv2. (Windows media video v8)
The audio: Windows Media Audio 9.2 20 kbps, 32 kHz, mono (A/V) 1-pass CBR
I can get the video to play and even export on a timeline, however, once I begin adding more of the assets to the project file it seizes.
Do I need to convert each of these files to something else? We have even considered filming the computer screen as the files play in an effort to have premiere friendly files. (last resort)
The majority of the film has been shot with a Sony Ex 1. 30fps 1080p format.
Please forum gurus......your my only hope.
    Sincerely,
    John Keating

    John,
I think that Joe has answered all the questions, and I agree.
As a bit of background on WMV's, I had a Project about a year ago. Though I felt strongly that the original material existed, the client insisted that the WMV's were all that were available. They had been done for some streaming delivery, and were long. All three files were about 1.5 hours. The requirement was for some minor cutting, a bunch of new Titles, and not much more. In a fit of anger at not getting the original material, I just threw the WMV's into a Project, did the required changes, and turned the workstation loose to Render for output. It was slow working with those large WMV's, but was even slower in my Export. The machine chugged along, and I got bored, as I knew there was a bit of a deadline. I grabbed the laptop, converted the WMV's (as I should have to begin with), Imported those (DV-AVI's for the SD material), did the same Cuts, and Titles, cleaned things up a bit. I did an Export from the laptop. My guess was that I was already into the Export on the workstation (much faster, and more powerful than the laptop) about 45 mins. I did the conversion, the re-cut and Title production, and finished my laptop Export with another 45 mins. to spare! I should have known better, but broke many of my own rules. At least it gave me a fair idea of how much I benefitted from conversion, outside of PrPro. Your mileage may vary.
Good luck, and hope that the Project goes smoothly. Sounds interesting. I've never used any Webcam footage, so would be curious how things come together.

  • Object of type Novell.Zenworks.ActionManager.ActionResult cannot beserialized{}

    What the heck does
Object of type Novell.Zenworks.ActionManager.ActionResult cannot be
    serialized{}
    mean?
Seems like app deploy of ZESM 3.5 client is not reporting status to ZCM
10.1. ZESM client tries to deploy over and over and over and over. Ended
up having to set bundle requirements so it checks to see if c:\program
    files\novell\zenworks security client\stengine.exe exists so it won't
install if it's already there. I don't really like this workaround.
It seems as though, partway thru the ZESM client install, the workstation
looses its connection to the network (I see the systray icon indicating
it's broadcasting for a dhcp address.). During this time, Adaptive Agent
cannot send updates to the zcm server. Eventually the workstation
reboots (even though I've specified in the bundle AND in the ZESM msi not
to reboot). When it comes up, ZESM client is installed, but Adaptive
Agent does not think so, and tries to install again. The occurs for
eternity, until I reimage the workstation, or go into safe mode and
disable services, etc... Which sure ain't cool.
Bundle is set to install MSI once per device. Runs as logged in user.
    Run at user login.

My understanding of serialization is simply a method to which move
objects, either to a file (stream) or to another object or system.

There might not be anything wrong with the bundle or package now that I
think about it. Of course we don't want the error message, but in general
there might not be anything wrong other than this specific situation.
    >So the action manager goes through and one by one attempts to perform
    >the appropriate action (in my case launch) for each object for which a
    >user/device is assigned ? and if any one of those objects in this
    >(serial) string of events fails, then this error is generated ?

    >I am wondering of some of these are as simple as, the user logs out,
    >before the action manager finishes its list. ?
I am wondering if the bundle is deploying the ZESM client and wants to
send back a message to the ZCM server about the launch status or
distribution status. This could be done, I don't know for sure as I am not
a developer for ZCM, but this could be done with serialization. So the
bundle is sending a status message back to ZCC, but the ZESM client
install is killing the network connection at the exact time this is
happening which is generating the serialization error.
We might need to do more testing before we can find a fix for this.
Are you saying that other simple bundles do not have this issue? Example:
A bundle that launches calc.exe does not have an issue?

  • Workstation policies not refreshing...

    Hi,
We have a number on workstations in one area of our university whose desktop policies do not refresh following build/rebuild.
Workstations are members of a group and a policy package is associated with that group which deploys printers and makes some tweaks. The workstation can be rebooted any number of times but the policies don't appear. Run wmsched and click "Refresh" and there they are.
Is there a means of forcing the workstation to refresh its policies (other than by manual intervention) or troubleshooting what might be going on?
We're using Zenworks 7 and Windows XP SP2 and SP3 clients.
    Thanks in advance,
    Matt

The only way I've ever been able to reliably refresh policy is with a reboot (workstation) or login (user). Some settings will update via the wmsched.exe tool, but not consistently.
