Workstation Manager service clears Automatic Configuration Script Properties.

We have a weird problem where when the workstation manager service
starts it clears the Automatic Configuration Script within Internet
Explorer. Now out of our 400 odd PCs, only about 3 are doing it. For
now we have counter acted it by putting in an actual Proxy Server in,
but if we disable the workstation manager service, restart the PC, the
Automatic scripting is still in place.
We have gone through the group polices, and through the Zen
policies, we can't work out where Workstation Manager is receiving its
instructions to do this?
We are running Novell Client 4.9.1 SP2, we applied SP2 for the client
to see if this would resolve the error but it didn't
Thanks in advance,
Jim

I will follow those instructions in that TID you supplied me, you can
log in as any user, and even if you tick the workstation only box, the
problem still occurs.
Thanks,
Jim

  • Workstation Manager Service - High Memory Consumption

    Anytime I leave my work PC running for 2-3 days without restarting it, the Workstation Manager Service gradually starts to consume more and more memory. It seems like every day past when I restart this work PC, the Window's Task Manager will show that the WM.EXE process is consuming 100 MB more memory than it was the previous day. For example, my PC hasn't been restarted in about 3 days now, and the Task Manager is showing that the WM.EXE process is using 382,940 K of memory. If I were to not restart this PC for another 2 days, it would then be consuming more than 500,000 K of memory. None of the other processes running on this PC seem to be exibiting this weird behavior if I don't restart the PC. The version number is 6.5.0.4.
    I've attached a zip file containing 3 screenshots (spanning over 2 months) of the Window's Task Manager showing what I am referring to.
    Does anyone know what may be causing the WM.EXE process to behave like this and how I can go about resolving this issue?

    Make sure you are at SP2 IR1.
    I don't recall that version number.
    However, there were some known leaks at one point in time there were
    addressed.
    Its just been too long for me to recall the details.

  • Why does unchecking the "use automatic configuration script" box on Internet Explorer 8 fix connectivity errors?

    As long as I have been in the job and we have been using IE as our browser, we have controlled the proxy settings with an automatic configuration file.
    Recently, with IE8 on WinXP and Win7, we have had situations with the user getting various connectivity errors. By unchecking the "use automatic configuration script" box, they start working. But we don't change anything else.
    These error are not consistent from machine to machine.
    We are in a AD Domain environment
    These are the two errors I have documented.
    Error: 5
    Description: The 'Microsoft.ACE.OLEDB.12.0' provider is not registered on the local machine.
    Access to resrouce is forbidden by server while attempting to access server at
    http://content.mpl.org/cgi-bin/admin/pwtest.exe?CISOVER=60.
    Please check the permissions to the file on th eserver.
    Two very different problems. Both somehow fixed by unchecking the box.
    The config file itself has not been changed in over a year.
    Can anyone explain why unchecking this box, but not making any other changes to the proxy settings would fix connectivity problems? These are all external sites that need to go through the proxy.
    Thanks.

    Hi,
    You can use the steps in the following thread to disable this option:
    uncheck "use automatic configuration script" in IE LAN settings
    http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/winserverGP/thread/05a7c683-075e-435c-8583-da8fd3559cf2
    Or try to
    reset Internet Explorer settings and select use automatic configuration script to see whether it could work.
    Hope this helps.

  • Use System Proxy Settings - when this is selected in FF v3.6.6, does it adhere to the same local IE proxy setting? We use a pac file configured in "Use automatic configuration script."

    Does anyone know what Firefox looks at locally on the PC when the "Use System Proxy Settings" setting is selected? It appears to be the default setting, recently changed from "No Proxy" of versions past...
    Our company uses a pac file specified in IE under "Use automatic configuration script" - with this new default, does it adhere to the same setting in:
    [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings]

    I may be wrong but I think that the "Use System Proxy Settings" makes sense only on Linux and generally speaking "other OSes". As far as I know there is no generic proxy settings in Windows operating system.
    The one I know is in the registry part of Internet Explorer.
    So in my understanding in Windows, Use System Proxy Settings = No Proxy

    I mean there is no general method which is capable of correcting all possible errors found by schema validation.
    For example if the validation says it expected to find an <organization> element or a <company> element but it found a <banana> element, there is no way to determine what repair is necessary.
    Anyway the requirement is fighting against the way things work in the real world. The purpose of validation is just to find out whether a document matches a schema. If it doesn't, then too bad. Send it back to be fixed or replaced. If you are having a problem because you repeatedly get documents which don't quite match your schema, then you need to train the users to produce valid documents or to give them tools which help them do that.

    Hi Luke,
    We hope your issue has been resolved
    The registry for use automatic configuration script is under HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings\AutoConfigURL
    (For per user) It shows when script is set to work.
    Regarding to question about scripting or VB script, I’d suggest that post your issue at TechNet scripting Forum and MSND forum. There you can get more effective suggestion by other experts who familiar with scripting. Your understanding is highly appreciated.
    https://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/vstudio/en-US/home?forum=vbgeneral
    And just for your reference, we do have a Group Policy for that, link it to a scope (Site, Domain, or OU level) which contain user account object.

  • Trying to use a proxy server automatic configuration script

    I have just started a new course and my university require every machine that connects to use a proxy configuration script and I am having a spot of bother getting it all set up.
    I have managed to get Firefox set up using the script (I was given a URL for the script and was able to get point the firefox settings at it.) Whilst this allows me to browse the web whilst on campus, it does not allow me to sync all my work to my git, svn and backup server, or in other words, anything that requires an internet connection.
    I am currently using Gnome 3, however, if it is easier to use this kind of thing, then I can switch off to another WM.
    If it helps, the URL for the config file is located here:  http://www-config.strath.ac.uk/proxy.config
    Thanks in advance for any help that can be offered.
    Edit: I tried sticking the url into the Proxy configuration URL bit in the Network settings screen, but that either doesn't work, or I don't know what I am doing (In all fairness, one is just as likely as the other)

    Looking more closely at the contents of that file, I am starting to be less impressed with the wireless service. At St Andrews I just had to install a certificate and setting up a WPA2-Enterprise profile and that was that, none of this logging into a web portal as if I was in a coffee shop hotspot nonsense.

  • Remote Management service does not start

    Has Novell got a fix for the issue where the Remote Management services
    fails to start automatically on XP workstations? As we upgrade our clients
    to XP, this has become a major headache. The service can be started
    manually, and then the Remote Control feature of ZFD will work, providing
    the firewall is disabled.

    Workaround is to create a batch file and put in the command:
    net start "remote management"
    Create a shortcut to this batch file and put it in the startup group of
    All Users in the "document and settings".

  • Returning Invalid type when reading auto configuration script

    Hi Everyone,
    Im using the JDK 1.5 plug-in API for reading the proxy settings. It working fine for HTTP and DIRECT connection, but its not working with automatic configuration script. I followed the below procedure for reading the settings
    1. Installed and configured the Apache HTTP Server as a proxy server.
    2. Created a proxy.pac file and placed it in the C:\WINDOWS folder. Content of the file is given below.
    function FindProxyForURL(url, host)
    if (isInNet(myIpAddress(), "192.168.1.0", "255.255.255.0"))
      return "PROXY 192.168.1.165:80";
    else
      return "DIRECT";
    }3.Changed the Internet setting in IE by specifying the proxy automatic configuration location as file://c:/windows/proxy.pac
    4.Accessed the browser and its working fine as I can see in the apache log file.
    5.When I executed the below code it showing me the proxy connection as the Direct one.
    private static void detectProxyUsingJDK15()
        try
          System.setProperty("java.net.useSystemProxies", "true");
          List list = ProxySelector.getDefault().select(new URI(PROXY_DETECT_URL));
          for (Object aList : list)
            Proxy proxy = (Proxy) aList;
            System.out.println("Proxy : "+proxy);
            InetSocketAddress address = (InetSocketAddress) proxy.address();
            System.out.println("address : "+address);
            if (address == null)
              System.out.println("Proxy not defined");
            else
              System.out.println("" + address.getPort());
              System.out.println("" + address.getHostName());
              System.out.println("" + proxy.type().toString());
        catch (Exception e)
          e.printStackTrace();
      }Please note that when I executed the above code after changing the settings IE by disabling the automatic configuration script and giving the proxy server details it showed me the proxy connection as HTTP

  • Packaging Configuration Management Service of the portal

    Hi:
    I am writing a KM namespace filter to be applied to a CM
    repository of news items. There is an 'admin console' for
    this functionality. The 'Admin' in her/his admin console
    iview does some selections regarding no. of items,name of
    categories to display and saves them.
    Since KM filter functionality or CM repository properties
    can't be changed during runtime,ie.,any change of selections
    done by the 'admin' needs restart of the servlet engine,
    which is not an option in a production environment. So, I
    thought of using 'Configuration Management Service' of the
    portal to read from and write to all the selections during
    the runtime.
    <u>Everything is fairly easy regarding writing a configuration
    management service, except packaging it and deploying it.
    The documentation makes no sense if you compare it to the
    example given along with the portal documentation.
    Do we have to use any special plugin to package this
    service ? Or is there any updated documention available ?</u>
    Please help me with this problem,

  • Manage Profile Services - Unable to edit User Properties or User Profiles

    SharePoint 2013 - fresh site, with Mysites, and the User Profile Service running.  The UPS is ran under a separate account, and the farm account has securityAdmin rights and directory replication rights.
    When I enter Manage User Properties, I get a complete list of properties but no way to edit them, the same happens when I go into User Profile Properties, there is no where to edit the users.  Has anyone seen this before and if so what step have I missed
    in setting the UPS and MySites Up.
    Both Administrator and Farm Admin have Administrator rights to the UPS Application, and it's the Profile User Service that's running at the minute not the Profile User Synchronization Service.
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks
    David

    Thanks for the reply Adnan, however I think you missed the point. There is no capability to edit the properties, there's no dropdown to select edit form, in any of those areas against any of the properties.  I can see them but not edit them.
    It must be a permissions problem but I've no idea where it may lie.
    Here's how the UPS and Mysites were built:
    Created a separate user for the UPS account (UserUPS), and registered it as a Managed Service account.
    Added Replicating Directory Changes to the Farm account.
    Started the User Profile Service.
    Created the UPS application using the UserUPS account for the application pool.
    Configured the Directory Import - used SharePoint Active Directory Import.
    Created a new Synchronization connection using the Farm account - it worked.
    Ran the synchronization - it worked, everything was import.
    Went into Manage Profile Service, Under People click on Manage User Profiles, entered a users name, clicked on it when it appeared - nothing, no edit capabilities at all.
    So at a loss as to where I've gone wrong?
    Ran Add-SPAdmin - it added the Farm account to the configuration db, and when I tried it against the Profile database it complained, basically saying not possible,
    I'm out of ideas at the minute and need to get this working so we can use SharePoint to hold a Skills map.
    Thanks

  • Automatic managed services setup

    The computers connected to the server gets e-mail accounts, ical, ichat etc. set up automatically, as the documentation says.
    Can I edit what it sets up?
    E.g. my users have more than one e-mail address, set up with postfix aliases. The automatic e-mail setup sets the user e-mail to the main e-mail, but to be able to send e-mails from the aliases it has to be set up like "[email protected],[email protected]" etc. I don't know how to change this, because the field is greyed out on the computers, since the account is managed. Can I override it?
    And if I need to set up more e-mail automatically, and change e-mail preferences, can I make an extra Mail plist file for a group and single users. Will the plist files be merged with the automatic set up, or will it override it totally?

    Hi,
    I also have this problem. I'm using ssl and the auto setup script does not manage at all to configure this properly in ical, address book or mail account. Even worse, in ical it sets up an account which is not possible to change or remove. If it not possible to change the behavior of the script, maybe it is possible to just turn it off or remove it? It is very annoying for the users to be presented with a auto config script which is not working properly and mesh things up.

    That's not what i'd describe as load balancing.
    A better description would be load-isolation. In your description then if the load on site1 was large (and growing) but site2 was quiet then site1 would struggle and eventually become unable to handle the number of users but site2 would still be ok. That's
    fine from a QOS point of view but it's not the norm for load balancing. It would work in simple scenarios but the out of the box load balancing tools are much better suited than that sort of approach.

    Hi,
    It's a good idea, but currently it's not yet supported.
    In Work Center, there is no predefined (nor a hidden) link shipped by SAP to access the Solution Database for key users.
    With a future EhP for Solution Manager, you might get an integration of the Solution Database into the message processing Web UI.

    STATUS | wrapper | 2009/08/06 07:10:06 | <-- Wrapper Stopped
    ============================================================================
    When we are starting , it stays for couple of mins say 10/15 mins then it stops.
    Can any body have any idea what should i do to get it resolved.

    The logs look odd to say the least on start up and there are couple items when the service gets the signal to shutdown that are suspicious.
    My suggestion is to troubleshoot top down. Clean up the discrepant messages upon startup.
    message : INFO
    Please verify that the file is readable by the current user
    and that the file has not been corrupted in any way.
    One common cause of this problem is running a 32-bit version
    of the Wrapper with a 64-bit version of Java, or vica versa.
    This is a 64-bit JVM.
    Are you attempting change the existing out of box JVM?
    You know it doesn't use sun jvm anymore. It's JROCKIT.
    Make sure your JVM Settings are as follows:
    C:\bea\alui\configmgr\2.0\settings\config\wrapper_base.conf
    # Java Application
    wrapper.java.command=%JRE_PATH%/bin/java
    THEN Verify:
    CMD
    cd C:\bea\alui\common\jre\1.5.0_32\
    java -versionYou should get something like.
    java version "1.5.0_12"
    Java(TM) 2 Runtime Environment, Standard Edition (build 1.5.0_12-b04)
    BEA JRockit(R) (build R27.4.0-90-89592-1.5.0_12-20070928-1715-windows-ia32, comp
    iled mode)
    In any case, your enviroment seems funky. Use the tips above to troubleshoot.
    Troubleshoot this error first and find out why it thinks your using a 64 bit JVM versus a 32 bit one.
    Last tip: Place Logging into Debug to see whether more logging will give you further insight into the problem.
    Hope this helps!
    Cheers!!!
