Workstation Name
Zen 3.2 sp3/Netware 5.1 sp7/Windows 9x PC's
Importing workstations is working fine except for a naming anomaly. We
are using ComputerName + MAC as the object name, and when registered,
the workstations name registers as the name of the original image, not
the actual computer name.
Here is the scenario:
LabPC01 is our master image. We then put that image on the other 9 (or
however many) PC's in a lab, and rename the PC's to LabPC02,
LabPC03...LabPC10.
Upon Registering the PC's all ten register with the correct MAC address,
but with the wrong name:
LabPC01 00:02:03:04:05:AF
LabPC01 00:02:03:04:0B:D4
LabPC01 00:02:03:04:B5:FA
LabPC01 00:02:03:04:22:AB
I have searched the registry, and the only place the old name appears is
in the key HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows
Media\WMSDK\General\ComputerName
I apologize if this information is readily available in the
documentation, but I am trying to determine where the Zenworks
Registration process gets the computer name from so that I can ensure
future workstations import with the correct name. My first guess was
that the key above must be the place, but I was not sure why the name
would come from this location. (Note this problem exists only in Win
9x, not XP).
Thanks for any insight.
Daryl
My guess is that the Workstation is Registering prior to a technician
actually renaming the PC.
As part of the procedures for deploying the PC, I would run "UNREG32.EXE" at
the same time the workstation is renamed.

How to set Workstation Name on Solaris 10?
Hi.
I have problems with setting workstation name.
I tryed to do it with Management Console, but system crashed, because there was missmatch between the name in few files. So I installed Solaris 10 again.
How to change workstation name?
Thank you.Thank you.
There are two /etc/hostname files, they are empty: hostname and hostname6.
/etc/hosts has what I need to change.
I was unable to find /etc/nodename.
Will it work, if I'll change only /etc/hosts and make "hostname <new hostname>"?
In previous time when my system crashed, I changed: /etc/hosts, but it didn't work. -
Setting Workstation name automatically after/before imaging
Hello,
I am planning on imaging 150 workstations from one base image. Currently, the workstation name (computername or wsname) is 'uitdelen'. All imaged workstation also receive this name.
In the past i used the tool WSNAME to change the name upon first boot using the /GH switch.
But doing this on 150 PCs is troublesome.
What i would like is that i have a txt file with the serial numbers of the machines, and the workstation name (computername) it should receive. This file would have to be read by the Zen 7 boot CD (i use 6.5, but use the 7 bootcd, because that recognises the nic, where the PXE doesnt)
Any hints?

Hi:
Is there a way to access any "system" variables with Acrobat JavaScript? I haven't been able to find anything (other than Date()) in the references. This is outside the scope of core JavaScript, as far as I know.
In particular, I want to be able to pluck the workstation name string and insert it in a footer.
Thank you in advance.
-- Roy Zidertry67:
You are so right. Substring not necessary (but good reminder of another method). I misread my own system.
I've got three workstations active; on one of them[MPX2] the drive assignments are simple: C: and D; on another [K7N] the directories are treed: D:\D, D:\E, D:\F, and so forth. I read /D/MyDox/<filename> as being on the K7N workstation with the 'virtual' sub-drive directory structure, when in fact I was on the other workstation (MPX2) I had lost track of which system I was woking with.
Sorry for any inconvenience, and thank you for bucking this back to me.

Naming workstations - setting host name
I would like to know if there is a way to set host names for multiple
computers once I re-image them with the same base image. I was thinking I
could create a bunch of reg keys something like "lab1-01", "lab1-02" etc.
and register computers in the lab as per their physical location.
It seems though that all their host names will remain the same as per the
original one of the base image. I then can not remote via the host name
unlike with Zen 7 when I could do that in ConsoleOne which did not rely on
host names I believe. So ideally I would like to have an easy way to
populate host names ( and maybe computer names, too ) during registration,
is that at all possible ?
AndrewI am pretty sure that ZCM 10 also has a policy or setting, which if I
remember is not enabled by default, which will rename the device names
if the workstation name changes.
Here it is ...
Configuration | Device Management | Registration
At the bottom is a section called "Device Dynamic Rename", with t a
checkbox for "Enable automatic renaming of devices". Here is what the
help file says:
Device Dynamic Rename
The Device Dynamic Rename panel lets you enable devices to be renamed,
if necessary, whenever they refresh their registration information. A
device might need to be renamed for the following reasons:
The naming template being applied to the device has changed.
A different naming template (for example, a folder naming
template rather than the Management Zone naming template) is now being
applied to the device.
Because a devices GUID and not its name is used for all relationships
with other ZENworks objects (folders, groups, bundles, policies, and so
forth), renaming the device does not affect anything other than the name
that is displayed in ZENworks Control Center.
You can define this setting at two levels:
Management Zone: The setting is inherited by all devices.
Device Folder: The setting is inherited by all devices contained
within the folder or its subfolders. Overrides the Management Zone setting.
NOTE:If you are configuring the setting on a device folder, you need to
click Override settings before you can modify the setting.

We license our software by number of workstations.
I have a query that I have used for years to get an accurate count of the workstations logged in to my SQL Server database. For simplicity, all users use the same login name/password. This is built in to the script that attaches to the DB. They
have access only to that DB with the exception of
USE [Master] GRANT VIEW SERVER STATE to MyUser
The query that has been working is below:
Basically this relies on the mac address (Master.dbo.sysprocesses.net_addre
SELECT COUNT(Users) AS UserCount FROM (SELECT COUNT(Master.dbo.sysprocesses.hostname) AS Users FROM Master.dbo.sysprocesses LEFT OUTER JOIN Master.dbo.sysdatabases ON Master.dbo.sysdatabases.dbid = Master.dbo.sysprocesses.dbid WHERE (Master.dbo.sysdatabases.name = 'MyDatabase') GROUP BY Master.dbo.sysprocesses.net_address) AS UserCount_1
ss), since both Workstation names and ip addresses can be duplicated.
Recently this has stopped working at a number of customers. Suddenly individual workstations are showing multiple net addresses for the same workstation causing a substantial overcount of users. This may be related to SQL Server 2012 - not sure.
What I need is a very reliable way to get a count of workstations logged in to my database.
If anyone can tell me why I am suddenly getting multiple net_addresses for each workstation and how to prevent that that would be one possible solution.
Otherwise if anyone can give me a rock solid way to get a workstation count other than the above that would be great. Our largest customer is 50 users by the way.
Thanks in advance for any help.
KimI think your count is getting skewed because of duplicate rows in sysprocesses because of parallelism. Add DISTINCT to your query:
SELECT COUNT(Users) AS UserCount
FROM
( SELECT COUNT(DISTINCT Master.dbo.sysprocesses.hostname) AS Users
FROM Master.dbo.sysprocesses LEFT OUTER JOIN Master.dbo.sysdatabases
ON Master.dbo.sysdatabases.dbid = Master.dbo.sysprocesses.dbid
WHERE (Master.dbo.sysdatabases.name = 'MyDatabase'
GROUP BY Master.dbo.sysprocesses.net_address) AS UserCount_1

We recently installed a SCVMM 2012 machine and connected it to a few HyperV2012 hosts.
From the SCVMM console locally on the machine it is installed on, I can connect to the Console of the VMs on the remote HyperV machines. However for some reason when I run it remotely from my workstation, I can connect to SCVMM just fine, but connecting
to the console of the VMs gives me the error:
Virtual Machine Manager lost the connection to the virtual machine for one of the following reasons:
Another connection was established to the console of this manchine.
The virtual machine has been shut down or put into the saved state.
The user credentials do not have the necessary privilege to connect.
0x0003, 0x0000
The firewall is not detecting any dropped packets (I enabled logging) and I am logging in with the same user as I do locally to the SCVMM server, so it is not permissions.
Any advice would be extremely helpful. Thanks,

We setup two new windows computers running Windows 8.1 with DHCP IP addresses: 10.13.3.108 and 10.13.3.170
Every 30 seconds we get a message that the name exchange2010 (not our workstation names) cannot be claimed on one of the IP addresses because the other IP address has the name.
I cleared Netbios, flush DNS and tried renaming the workstation with adding and removal from domain. All have yielded no luck.
Any thoughts?

Automatic Rename of workstation after re-imaging
I am trying to determine why my laptops are not keeping their names or at least renaming themselves as a process of the ZEN Imaging we do with our students laptops. The re-image process and rebooting of the laptop after re-imaging works correctly. The only issue is that the laptop does not keep its name and reverts to the name within the image used. I have pasted in a section of the "imenu" we using in selecting the appropriate image.
fi
sleep 5
img rp $PROXYADDR //$PROXYADDR/images/hsvostro1000.zmg ;
zisedit Computername=$WSNAME ;
echo -e " \033[31mRebooting computer! \033[0m" ; reboot -f ;;
4 ) if [ -n "$(zisview ComputerName)" ]; then
WSNAME=$(zisview ComputerName)
else
echo -e "No Safedata"
while test ! $WSNAME; do
echo -n "Please enter the workstation name:"
read WSNAME;
done
I have even used this line after to replace my "original" zisedit command after reading a post in the forums that it worked on their Dell laptops. But it fails just like the script displayed above.
zisedit ComputerName=$WSNAME$D$SN DNSHostName=$WSNAME$D$SN WindowsWorkgroup=$WSNAME DNSSuffix=usd376.com JustImaged=True ;

Yes, I found that. And I now have a good solution in place. Only thing, it'd be nice to be able to specify an Action (or at least an agent refresh) after pressing the Submit button of the CDF. -
Random characters after computer name
Hello,
We have a new issue with our agent deployment since we use MDT to deploy our workstations.
When computer register to ZCM some random characters appear after computer name, for example:
Computer name: corporate001
ZCM computer name: corporate001-741132927c2e6f41b5569a9f9409b983
Do you have an explaination?
ZCM Agent is automatically installed after deployment through a .vbs script.
cscript ZCMscript.vbs
Code:
Set objShell = CreateObject("Shell.Application")
objShell.ShellExecute "PreAgentPkg_AgentCompleteDotNet.exe", "-q " & "-x"
strComputer = "." ' local computer
strProcess = "Setup.exe"
Do Until isProcessRunning(strComputer,strProcess)
WScript.Sleep(5000)
Loop
Do While isProcessRunning(strComputer,strProcess)
WScript.Sleep(5000)
Loop
WScript.Quit 0
' Function to check if a process is running
FUNCTION isProcessRunning(BYVAL strComputer,BYVAL strProcessName)
DIM objWMIService, strWMIQuery
strWMIQuery = "Select * from Win32_Process where name like '" & strProcessName & "'"
SET objWMIService = GETOBJECT("winmgmts:" _
& "{impersonationLevel=impersonate}!\\" _
& strComputer & "\root\cimv2")
IF objWMIService.ExecQuery(strWMIQuery).Count > 0 THEN
isProcessRunning = TRUE
ELSE
isProcessRunning = FALSE
END IF
END FUNCTIONYes, the random number is the "Device GUID".
In your Example there would already be a device called "corporate001" in your zone.
The GUID is added since there cannot be two devices with the same name.
There are reconciliation rules that determine "matches".
Most likely, your rules rely upon MAC and/or SN and this changed instead of relying upon Workstation Name.
No one way is "Correct".
It really comes down to what works for you.
Most likely a tweak of the rules to rely more upon "Workstation Name" may work best for you since I suspect your devices are in a domain if using MDT, which means the names are unique. -
Named Pipes Provider, error: 40 on workgroup workstations
I am having issues with a vendor supplied application. It generates an error when run from workstations that are not part of an Active Directory domain. The error is “provider: Named Pipes Provider, error: 40 –
Could not open a connection to SQL Server)”. It runs as expected when ran from a workstation that is a member of the domain. Obviously adding the workstation to the domain is a solution. However, because of concern of what might break this is not our preferred
solution.
The database is SQL Server 2008 on a 2008R2 system that is a member server of a domain. The systems that are having the error are workgroup systems running Windows 7. Except for the final step, I have pretty much
eliminated the other possibilities in Steps to troubleshoot SQL connectivity issues.
That, and the fact that the application successfully runs from a workstation that is a member of the domain lead me to believe it is an account/authentication issue on the workstation.
From what I have determined SQL authentication is required in this scenario and I have confirmed that the database server is configured for Windows and SQL Server authentication. I have also examined
the configuration file the application uses. It contains the user name and password for the account. Are these credentials not used to establish a connection?
The only thing I can think of, which I haven’t tested because 1) it is a production system and 2) it is a vendor supplied application, is the application needs to be run under a local workstation
account with the same credentials as the SQL Server account.
Could this be the case or is there something else I should be look at?
Thanks in advance. Thanks for your response. I had posted a reply earlier but for some reason it doesn't appear to have uploaded.
The server name in the connection string is ntsrv12.xxx.yyy.edu. I am able to ping that name and ntsrv12 as well from workstations where the application fails.
I have some information from some additional testing I have done. Using my workstation, which is a domain member, I can successfully run the application when logged on with my domain user account.
However, if I logon with a local account the application fails with the error described above.
I have also been able to match Audit Failures in the SQL Server event log with failed attempts to run the application. There is a two error sequence that appears several times for 15 seconds until the application times out and displays the error message.
I have listed the errors below but certainly the application appears to see the server. Any ideas on what to check next?
Thank you.

This event is generated when a logon request fails. It is generated on the computer where access was attempted.
The Subject fields indicate the account on the local system which requested the logon. This is most commonly a service such as the Server service, or a local process such as Winlogon.exe or Services.exe.
The Logon Type field indicates the kind of logon that was requested. The most common types are 2 (interactive) and 3 (network).
The Process Information fields indicate which account and process on the system requested the logon.
The Network Information fields indicate where a remote logon request originated. Workstation name is not always available and may be left blank in some cases.
The authentication information fields provide detailed information about this specific logon request.
- Transited services indicate which intermediate services have participated in this logon request.
- Package name indicates which sub-protocol was used among the NTLM protocols.
- Key length indicates the length of the generated session key. This will be 0 if no session key was requested. -
Best way to change workstation
What is the best way to change the workstation name and import it into
edirectory.
We constantly have user change computer name. Most of the time when we
change the computer name it takes day to reflect on the edirectory. When
rename the workstation object, we cannot even remote to the workstation.
I have problem remote to through user name, I keep getting user does login
when in fact the user is login. We have netware 6.5 with the latest

With Apple Remote Desktop How can I change all the computer names
After a re-imaging session?. I would like to not have to visit each station and manually change the computer name.
Is this at all possible using ARD?Hi
I don't use DeployStudio and know nothing about it. In terms of simply changing the names? Yes. Clearly not in the same way. You could use what's built-in on OSX Server if you have it? System Image Utility allows creation of nbis with an associated workflow that can define workstation names from a pre-prepared list of MAC Addresses and desired names as a Post-Install Action.
This is fairly well-documented in the Server Forum and elsewhere.

Random problem with Workstation Manager authentication between reboots
I'm seeing some strange behavior with my XP SP2 workstations running the
ZfD 6.5 SP2 management agent (servers are Netware 6.5 OES SP5). All
workstations are local to the preferred server (same subnet and edir
partition) using the Netware Client 4.91 SP2 so no middle tier server
is configured. Preferred server is being delivered via DHCP option 85,
etc.
By looking through the WM.log file, I've been able to narrow the
problem down to one major symptom: After starting a workstation, it may
or may not successfully authenticate to eDirectory. The workstations
are imported into the tree with valid objects and if the workstation
authenticates, all is well -- I can remote control it, all applications
come down, policies, etc. If the workstation does not authenticate,
when I try to remote control it using Console One, I get the 1456 error
(which, by searching the forums, seems to be happening to more than a
couple people here including this thread -
http://www.ndsengineers.com/showthread.php?t=226904) and there are
usually issues with some policies or applications not coming down.
If authentication fails, it will never authenticate no matter how long
the machine stays up. If you reboot the workstation, it may or may not
authenticate. If it does not, you have to reboot it again, cross your
fingers, and hope it authenticates. If it does authenticate,
everything works perfectly. I can remote control it, all policies are
delivered, workstation associated applications are delivered, etc.
It may be important to note that I never have issues with users
authenticating. That works fine each and every time, even if the user
is logging in on a workstation that is in the un-authenticated state.
The part that baffles me is that this will happen in a seemingly random
fashion. For example, I can take a freshly imaged and imported
workstation and let it sit at a login prompt. I can see if it
authenticates or not by looking at the server console monitor screen
(or I can attempt to remote control it.) Without logging in, I will
restart it. About one minute later, it will be back at the login
screen. At this point, it may or may not be authenticated. I can
reboot it again and it may or may not authenticate. I can't determine
a pattern or a reason for this randomness. Between these reboots, I
touch absolutely nothing on the server. What would cause such
inconsistencies between reboots when nothing else is changing?
Below is some excerpts of the WM.log file that shows the machine in
both it's authenticated and not authenticated states.
I'm running out of patience with this problem (or bug) -- it's been
beating me up for over two weeks now! Thanks in advance to you folks
for any and all help!!

No real new developments yet. I'm planning on doing some more
troubleshooting the rest of this week. I have some "long-shot"
theories but I'm not too optimistic that they'll amount to any real
solutions. Please be sure to keep this thread posted if you have any
developments and I'll be sure and do the same thing.
Thanks!

Trouble registering WS objects with new name
Setup:
Master imaging computer multicasts image to others. Ran zisedit -c before starting image to clear ZISD data. Also removed System="ziswin.exe" from registry so that it doesn't run on first boot.
After image completes:
Computer boot up with auto admin logon and runs wsname.exe to rename worksotation, places the ziswin.exe back int registry so it runs on next boot, and removes auto admin settings in registry, and then reboots with ncshtdwn.exe.
Second boot:
Comes up and does it's "Zenworks is finalizing workstation" stuff then reboots once more.
Our policy registers workstations as Name:MacAddress. The Mac Address part is right, but name part is from the master computer. The NetBios name of ZISD shows up correctly with the new name. When I run zwsreg -unreg and zwsreg, it still registers with the master computers name. The only way I can get it to register correctly is to run ziswin.exe and change "workstation object" manually to the right name.
Is there a way to script a change to the ZISD so that it will update to the newer workstation name and not the master image computers or am I stuck going through and doing it manually?seth,
