World edition Mybook on mac

How Do I get at Mybook World edition to work on the internet. I have a 30 day trial with MioNet but can not get it to work via my Mac platform. Has anybody had any luck doing that? Or does anybody know of an alternative to MioNet.
The Mybook works just fine on the wireless network at home.

I have a MyBook world Edition II, and it is hooked up to a router along with windows and mac computers (additionally being connected through a switch does not matter).
I had to run the CD that came with the hard drive in a windows computer in order to setup my HD, but I'm sure you can just type into the browser the IP address of the hard drive once connected ... http://192.168.1.4 for example.
After setup, make sure you create shared directories and user accounts on the hard drive. Typically going to the browser and typing http://MyBook ... or instead of MyBook, use the IP address of the HD.
Notice that "MyBook" is the name you gave the HD upon installation.
To connect to a shared directory, on the finder menu, go to Go->Connect to Server. Type in:
smb://MyBook
This will connect to your "MyBook" hard drive, and then select the shared directory.
To "auto connect" to your hard drive when you first start up, you can use Automator to create a small script to automatically connect to your hard drive. Then make that small application run on startup.
This, however, does not solve the problem of being able to connect to your HD outside of your local network, which is what WD promised! ... I'm very disappointed because of this ... I might find another way using Leopard's new features or something.

    Hi Guys, I am a first time poster so please forgive me if my etiquette is not quite up to spec . I have a bit of a puzzle on my hands and i am wondering if anyone can help me solve it. I have just been given a 1TB WD MyBook World Edition (Blue Rings). I have connected it to my mac book via to see if it would show up straight off the bat. The device did not display - Refusing to give up i connected it to my the wireless router in my house - Success it worked. One small problem though, i live in a rented shared house and i do not feel comfortable a. leaving it in a communal area (as the router is in the lounge) b. the data transfer rate over wireless was pitiful for the use i require. Again being defiant and refusing to give up i dug out an old router and thought up the ingenious idea of using it as a DHCP server and running a private network to use the mybook. However i overlooked the fact that i would require the wireless network regardless. So i guess what the problem boils down to is - A. How can i connect to two networks at the same time? + B. How can i run the mybook running directly via Ethernet and still retain internet access via wireless? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Since you've posted in the Time Machine forum, apparently you want to use this NAS (Network Attached Storage) device for Time Machine backups. If so, see the pink box in #2 of [Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions|http://web.me.com/pondini/Time_Machine/FAQ.html] (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum).
    As noted there, you'll need to follow WD's setup instructions.

  • Time Capsule vs. WD MyBook World Edition?

    Can anyone tell me the pros and cons of TC vs. WD's MyBook World Edition? I Googled and found only one review, but it was too "techy" for me to understand.
    I know the MyBook doesn't have a router, but even if I add the cost of buying one, it works out to about $50 less than a TC at BestBuy. Moreover, keeping the HD and router separate lowers risk of losing both if one goes.
    I won't be doing much with open source and other firmware etc. I am likely to be using the product as-is. So, please respond recognizing that I am not very tech-savvy. I will be using three Macs--an older MacBook Pro (Leopard), a MacPro QuadCore (PowerPC, Tiger), and new MacBook Pro (SL).
    Any help will be appreciated. Thanks.

    If you're thinking of using Time Machine with it, be aware that TM doesn't work well, if at all, with most NAS devices: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.6/en/15139.html
    WD claims it's compatible with Time Machine (and has an update for it on their web site): http://www.wdc.com/en/products/products.asp?DriveID=587
    I'd recommend searching both the +Leopard > Time Machine+ and +Snow Leopard> Time Machine+ forums for it.

  • Setting up Time Machine with Snow Leopard and MyBook World Edition II NAS

    I have just successfully set up Time Machine on my MyBook World Edition II NAS. It's not so straightforward, and the information on the Western Digital support site is either unhelpful or flat-out wrong, so here's a post that will hopefully save people in a similar position a lot of time and frustration.
    Here are the key facts:
    1. The MyBook World Edition II NAS does support Time Machine -- if you upgrade to at least firmware Release 1.01.14 (9/29/09). See http://www.wdc.com/wdproducts/updates/?family=mbworld. Amazingly, the Level I support people at Western Digital told me that Time Machine is not supported! I had to point him to this link.
    2. MyBook World Edition II comes with a built-in user, WD_Backup, which appears to be the only user that can be used for the backup.
    3. Follow the instructions here: http://www.wdc.com/wdproducts/updates/docs/en/appletimemachine.pdf. BUT, what the instructions don't tell you is the password for that user, which Mac OS will ask you for during the Time Machine setup. On my device, it was "admin" but other posts say the password can be "backup" or "wd_backup."
    4. Ignore some of the misleading statements in the Western Digital "knowledge base." For example, it says Time Machine is not supported. That used to be true but with the firmware update, is no longer true. Also, some instructions direct you to make a partition on your drive for Time Machine using Disk Utility. This is not possible, as far as I can tell, because the MyBook World Edition II shows up as a "share," not a "device" in the system, and therefore Disk Utility does not see it.
    5. The reason I wanted to set up a partition, where I could limit the disk space, is that I read that Time Machine creates daily backups, with incremental versions of documents. Thus, the Time Machine backup will eventually fill up whatever space is given to it. Since I could not partition the MyBook World Edition II, what I did instead was to enable the "Quota" functionality and then put a disk quota on the WD_Backup user. I hope this will do the trick. (I have the further issue of having two Time Machine backups, one for me, one for my wife. How our Time Machines will battle it out for the disk space, I have no idea.)
    I hope that the Western Digital people will create greater flexibility for Time Machine users in future firmware updates.

    You may be able to get it to work successfully, but there's no guarantee it will work well, or in the future.
    From a post in another forum (found by V.K.):
    The technical reason why Apple limits Time Machine to 10.5 AFP volumes appears to be to prevent disk image corruption. There were additional features added to AFP in 10.5 to support Time Machine. These presumably allow the disk image engine to force disk image journal data to write out all the way to the disk. Without such features, a network interruption can result in a corrupted filesystem on the disk image despite journaling. Remember, journaling relies on the journal being written all the way to disk before the changes take place. If you can't guarantee that (e.g., because of network/NAS buffering) then the journal is useless. Time Machine appears to rely heavily on disk journaling to deal with network drop-outs, interrupted backups, and the like. Take this away and your data is at risk.
    If the NAS you are using supports these features it should report them to the OS and you should natively be able to choose that volume. If you have to trick the OS to use the volume it means the NAS does not support it.
    To summarize: if you care about your backup data you should avoid using non-natively supported AFP servers.
    That post obviously applies to Leopard; Snow Leopard appears to have added some requirements, that are also not supported by all NAS devices: some that were working with Leopard no longer work with Snow Leopard.
    As long as you understand the risks, it's your call. But do yourself a favor and maintain some sort of secondary backup, such as a "clone" via CarbonCopyCloner or SuperDuper, or some other backup app. (Many of us do that with any backup app: no app is perfect, and all hardware fails, sooner or later.)

    Okay, I wanted to save some money over the time capsule and I bought a WD MyBook World Edition (This is a network drive which is attached to my router). How do I get Time Machine to back up on this drive.
    Time Machine recognizes the drive then asks me for a password. I don't know what password they want. Its not the my Mac password and I never set up a password for the new drive. Has anyone used this drive to back up Time Machine? Please help.

    TM doesn't back up to network drives, except a Time Capsule or an external USB disk attached to an Airport Extreme.
    You may find some "hacks" that might work, to a degree, but since they're unsupported by Apple, if you have troubles there's nowhere to go for help.
    Plus, a future OSX update could prevent it from working anymore, and might even render your backups useless.
    So proceed at your own risk.

  • Need help with WD MyBook World Edition

    I need some help on behalf of my whole office. I work for a digital print shop. We use a MyBook World Edition (not sure if 1 or 2) as our shared drive. Essentially, our receptionist places files from the client into MyBook, we access it from our computers in the back, and then use it again to transfer files to the computers that control the printers. I don't run the company, please don't tell me how we could be doing this better.
    On Monday, all of our computers suddenly got kicked from MyBook. We didn't do any updates or change anything, it just stopped working. This system has been working for us for months, possibly years I haven't been here that long. We reset it, and the Windows machines were able to recognize and access the drive. It shows up on the Macs under the shared panel, but we can't access it. It just says "connecting" forever, nothing happens. This problem is affecting 2 Mac Pros with Snow Leopard, and 1 with Mavericks.
    This is a huge deal for us, and we really need to get it fixed. We've resorted to passing files around on flash drives for the week, and it's been frustrating to say the least. If it helps, we have our MyBook in the front office, connected to an Airport Express Base Station. All of the computers connect via wifi.
    I'll be watching this discussion all day, so any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

    Have you turned the external drive off, let is set for approximately 30 seconds, and then turned it back on? Restarted computers?
    Try setting up another admin user account to see if the same problem continues. If Back-to-My Mac is selected in System Preferences, the Guest account will not work. The intent is to see if it is specific to one account or a system wide problem. This account can be deleted later.
    Isolating an issue by using another user account
    If the problem is still there, try booting into the Safe Mode using your normal account.  Disconnect all peripherals except those needed for the test. Shut down the computer and then power it back up after waiting 10 seconds. Immediately after hearing the startup chime, hold down the shift key and continue to hold it until the gray Apple icon and a progress bar appear. The boot up is significantly slower than normal. This will reset some caches, forces a directory check, and disables all startup and login items, among other things. When you reboot normally, the initial reboot may be slower than normal. If the system operates normally, there may be 3rd party applications which are causing a problem. Try deleting/disabling the third party applications after a restart by using the application un-installer. For each disable/delete, you will need to restart if you don't do them all at once.

  • Mybook World Edition not available / offline

    I have a mac mini and it is connected to a Mybook World Edition NAS through my wireless network. For some reason it keeps going offline. If I go to Finder I can navigate to it, it takes a little time "connecting" again then it is OK. However I find that from most apps, once this happens I can no longer save open document, or open fles from recent documents as it says the volume "folder name" is no longer available.
    Anyone have any ideas on what could cause this problem. The main issue for me is that I have an automated backup the backs up the NAS every night. I have to get lucky for it to work as most of the time the NAS is offline when the backup tries to access it.

    1. You'll need to move that library of the NAS. iPhoto needs to have the Library sitting on disk formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled). Users with the Library sitting on disks otherwise formatted regularly report issues including, but not limited to, importing, saving edits and sharing the photos.
    2. For iPhoto 09 (version 8.0.2) and later:
    What you mean by 'share'.
    If you want the other user to be able to see the pics, but not add to, change or alter your library, then enable Sharing in your iPhoto (Preferences -> Sharing), leave iPhoto running and use Fast User Switching to open the other account. In that account, enable 'Look For Shared Libraries'. Your Library will appear in the other source pane.
    Any user can drag a pic from the Shared Library to their own in the iPhoto Window.
    Remember iPhoto must be running in both accounts for this to work.
    If you want the other user to have the same access to the library as you: to be able to add, edit, organise, keyword etc.
    Quit iPhoto in both accounts. Move the Library to the Users / Shared Folder
    (You can also use an external HD set to ignore permissions, a Disk Image or even partition your Hard Disk.)
    In each account in turn: Double click on the Library to open it. (You may be asked to repair the Library Permissions.) From that point on, this will be the default library location. Both accounts will have full access to the library, in fact, both accounts will 'own' it.
    However, there is a catch with this system and it is a significant one. iPhoto is not a multi-user app., it does not have the code to negotiate two users simultaneously writing to the database, and trying will cause db corruption. So only one user at a time, and back up, back up back up.

  • WRT600N and MyBook World Edition

    I have a MyBook World Edition that is hooked via ethernet to the 600N.  I can ping the myBook but cannot map a drive.  The myBook World Edition is the networked version of a MyBook.  It has CIFs shares and broadcasts itself to the network.  Something in the 600N is blocking it as I can hook up my old Netgear router and get to it.
    How can I unblock this on the linksys?

  • I am unable to set my WD mybook world edition (white light) for time machine.

    I have new iMac running OS X Mavricks 10.9 and a WD mybook world edition (white light) connected via eithernet to router.
    I am unable to set up time machine using this drive. 
    I can see the MyBookWorld drive in Finder and read and write files with no problems.  I can also see the MyBookWorld_Backup drive but I am unable to connect.
    Time machine can see the drive but when I select, use drive, it trys to connect and gives me an error message: There was a problem connecting to the server "MyBookWorld-Backup"
    I have already updated the hardrive firmware.
    Any ideas?

    Which is basically Western Digital informing you that their out-of-date utilities don’t support Mavericks.
    In any case those utilities are not the most effective. The moral of the story is: the first thing you should do after buying a WD drive is to format it as HFS Extended (Journaled) and not install ANY of their utilities but instead use reliable applications like CarbonCopyCloner or SuperDuper - or Time Machine.

    I have recently bought a new MBP and I have got a Mybook world Edition NAS which I used with my Windows Vista in the past, where I just plugged the network cable right into the PC and maped it as a network drive.
    On my MBP however I dont know how I do this, that is why Im posting this new thread in hope that someone who have knowledge in this matter would give me a simple guide/tutorial on how to get this to work. Would use it for Time Machine if possible.
    If you know how to get it to work over AEBS as well it would be highly appreciated.

    I had the same problem and called Abbott with no luck.
    But I found a way, there is a new version 1.2 out there that works but it cannot be installed directly on Lion.
    You need access to a Leapard or Snow Leapard computer.
    1. Install on Lion (I know it installs but it does not work)
    2. Install from your meter on  and update the software from there to 1.2
    3. Copy the installation folder from the application folder of Leapard to Lion Application folder
    4. Launch the app and it will see your meter.

  • WD World Edition 1TB as a Time Machine drive with Mac and XP?

    I plan on buying a WD World Edition 1TB to use as my Time Machine drive over wireless netowrk at home for my 320GB MBP.
    My wife has a Windows XP PC so I would like to partition the 1TB into maybe 600MB for me and 400MB for her.
    First of all, will this type of partition work with TM and also, what format should the WD Drive be? I have installed MacFuse and NTFS-3G on my MBP.
    Any info from someone who does something simalr would be greatly appreciated.

    That sounds fine.
    So in theory, the WD comes with no partitions so I could set the whole thing up on the XP machine and set the partition sizes, then go the Mac, connect to the partition I've set aside for myself and select it, at which point the Mac will format it to HFS and start backing up?
    You say the Mac is oblivious to partitions so what would stop it formatting the entire drive to HFS?
    Ideally I'd like to get the WD software to backup the XP machine to the XP partition and TM to backup the Mac to the HFS partition. Do you know if this is likely to work? Hopefuilly someone with this drive will be able to answer as well.

    I have just given up on time machine set up after spending approx 8 hours and getting nowhere.
    I recently purchased a WD Mybook World Edition which states it is compatible for use with time machine. I have uploaded all the required updates and this is my progress so far:
    1. Managed to complete an initial Time Machine Backup (using log in wd_backup and password: backup).
    2. During the initial backup a time machine disk mounted to the desk top and everything seemed to be going well.
    3. Once the backup was completed, the time machine disk mounted on the desktop just disappeared.
    4. Further time machine backups now coming up as delayed as unable to find the disk.
    When I use finder, I can locate the following under shared:
    mybookworld
    mybookworld-Backup (this disappeaed after the first time machine backup)
    If i reset the WD Mybook and restart the macbook I can then go back into time machine, select the disk and then do another backup. This is very short as the initial backup is somewhere on the MyBook. However, the same thing happens, the disk mounted for backup disappears again.
    Please can anybody help as this is just driving me crazy.

    I've recently purchased one of these

    so I've moved all my music into it, and then imported it into itunes 10 - but no music populates itunes - it's just blank - can anyone help? I've set the destination folder it needs to look at, etc. and I'm using a sky router - and I can stream the music from the mybook fine - but itunes refuses to acknowledge the music (it analyses playback, determines gapless, artwork, etc. and takes AGES to do it) - but then nothing populates...
    PLEASE CAN YOU HELP!?!?!

    I'm having the same problem. With iTunes 10 many people with NAS devices have hit this problem as it appears we are all using a version of the Firefly media server which is no longer fully compatable with iTunes as of version 10. The fix for Firefly has been identified but us MyBook users will have to wait for Western Digital to put out a firmware update.

    I purchase a 2TB MyBook World Edition 2 at my local Apple store to back up the computers on my home network.  After the latest update to Snow Leopard, Time Machine will no longer connect to the backup.  I get the following error message:  Connection Failed. The server "MyBookWorld.local" may not exist or it is unavailable at this time. Check the server name or IP address, check your network connection, and then try again.

    Never mind, I fixed the problem by removing a lock feature from my external drive.

    I know that TM is only designed to work with Time Capsule or the AEBS, and trying to force it to work with any other NAS is difficult. But, I think I'd rather take the chance on a My Book World Edition II and get 4x the storage for the same price.
    Before that, though, I just want to see if anyone has successfully used a My Book World Edition II with Time Machine. I see a lot of threads out there in the world about people getting it up and running, and loving it, and a lot of people tearing their hair out. But, I'm not sure that all of the people who are tearing their hair out are people I would consider "capable" of forcing the system to work.
    Any personal stories here? Anyone get it running and then regret it?

    First, since this is *unsupported by Apple,* there's nowhere to go when there's trouble.
    Second, you're risking a future update preventing it from working, and perhaps rendering your backups useless.
    If you still think this is a good idea, do yourself a favor before you bet your backups on it: be sure it really works, at least for now:
    1. Get a copy of CarbonCopyCloner or SuperDuper! or the like, and make a full bootable clone of your internal HD, on an external disk. Test it by booting from it. Then reboot from your internal HD.
    2. Let TM do it's first, full, initial backup.
    3. Attempt a full system restore (like you'll need when, not if, your internal HD fails), via the instructions in item 14 of the +Frequently Asked Questions+ post at the top of this forum.
    Again, even if it works today, tomorrow is another day . . .
