  • Apps World icon wont respond

Hello there, i have an annoying problem which i cant fix. • Cisco VPN client and mac mail

    Hi all,
I wonder if someone can be more helpful than my uni IT department who take a minimum of a week to get you an IP address...
My new uni uses Cisco VPN client for connection to the Wi-Fi network. It all works great apart from one (very annoying problem):-my e-mail accounts in mac mail don't seem to be able to connect via the VPN. I have had both an IMAP and a POP server e-mail account work automatically wherever I connect in the world for over a year now-so its not the way I've set up the accounts.
Is there any way to get mac mail to "see" the VPN connection. If I have to physically plug-in my mac this seems a tad ridiculous when it works in every coffee shop with free wi-fi.
My uni are not helpful as they want people to use either outlook or better still log-on to their e-mail using the web. I don't even want to use their e-mail-what is the point when I move jobs again in a year. What I do currently is use an IMAP account from my last job which I've set to forward to my "e-mail for life" from my undergrad uni. I basically only give out my life e-mail address and this also goes on all my papers.
If I can't access this easily and sort all my mail in all the folders I've created to filter out things like facebook etc. I'm wondering what the point of mac mail is.

Yeah, that stuff normally works for me. Unfortunately this is a situation where you have to use an external Cisco VPN client software, whether you like it or not. Its this horrible clunky thing (which at least half works I guess). So its only like normal wi-fi in terms of selecting the network, then you have to open up this application and put in your log-in etc. Most of the settings on this client seem locked, so there isn't much I can do to configure it.
I've just got to my (temporary) accommodation which doesn't have wi-fi or VPN (just ethernet) and my mail is working again-so it must be the VPN. Goodness knows how it works with an iPod touch (interested in getting one but kind of pointless if I spend most of my time at work and it doesn't work...)
    Thanks for your suggestions though!

At one point I was somewhat uneducated as a consumer on certain abbreviations.  I began to check around the internet but I never found a complete list of all of the abbreviations used in today’s technological world.  Over time I have collected a list of every network and printer-related term in relation to HP.  I am happy to share this with the world because sometimes when trying to troubleshoot within the forums and other web-based documents the writers can forget that not everyone knows the abbreviations and if you do not know sometimes you can get left behind and feel frustrated.   If you know of any other industry-standard abbreviations regarding printers, faxing, and network-connections feel free to post more here.

  • Significant loss of picture quality in iMovie, what are my other options???

    Hello All,
I am new to the Mac world moving over from windows.
Hooking up my dv camcorder (non high-def) to my TV gives a pretty good picture.
If I use iMovie to import from my camcorder and then iDvd to burn a dvd and play the DVD the picture quality is significantly reduced (looks worse than VHS!).
I am reading that this is uncorrectable through any settings available in iMovie or iDVD. This to me is unfathomable!
Being a newbie in the Mac world I don't know what my other options are.
I read about iMovie HD and Final Cut Express but don't know how they position and can I achieve better picture quality preservation.
I want my camcorder picture quality better preserved. I’ve certainly gotten much better results on windows with various packages (but have little experience).
I came into the Mac world believing that this sort of thing is what Mac was great for so a bit surprised.
How do you folks get around such a significant picture quality loss???
My home movies through iMovie and iDVD look embarassing for circa 2009!

I convert my imported dv files to AIC at 1080p before editing.
There is a small quality drop using this approach, I find it acceptable but some others don't.
I have added an original dv movie clip, two exports in different formats of the same clip as prepared in imovie 09 and another of the same clip exported to back to dv as prepared in imovie 6, to a disc image of a DVD created in iDVD.
I don't feel the differences represent the differences some here are reporting they see themselves, see what you think

  • Mac vs PC for graphic design

I've been working in a graphics department of my architecture firm for 7 years. We've been using PCs all of that time, but I can't help thinking my graphics team might be better off using Macs. Our workflow involves many other users in the office who aren't graphics staff. They all use AutoCAD, Sketchup, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, 3d Studio etc. (I'm happy with them having PCs). They all have Adobe CS3 installed on their PCs, and make modifications to images, layout, text, plans, sections and elevations. We all contribute to the finished product, usually a PDF, over a Windows server during the production period.
I find myself wondering why most of the graphics studios that surround me in London's Noho use Macs. What are the real world benefits over PCs?
I can think of these few, but my design world use of Macs has ground to a halt these past seven years:
    - Macs are design industry standard. I've always heard this mentioned, but why? What is it about them that have made them a design industry standard?
    - Switching files from Mac to PC is a non-issue, even over a server, they integrate well
    - Macs are more reliable. OS X uses less RAM freeing the machine up to drive software
    - Macs offer better colour accuracy, especially for print
My IT team here are extremely reluctant to even let us try a Mac in our workflow. They say, and I quote: "...someone needs to demonstrate a rock-solid, obvious-to-everyone reason to start bringing them in. So give me something obvious. Give me something to offset the cost, etc, penalty of bringing Macs in."
It's a battle. Can anyone out there offer any thoughts?
    Cheers. Ashley

    >2 relatively virus free at present (can't recall the last virus we had)
I can recall. It was the mid to late 1990s and it ran all over the place because Mac users had their head buried in the sand and did not use anti-virus software.
Being relatively free of viruses is no benefit. Statistics showing how many more viruses affect Windows are useless. It only takes one virus to knock you out. The majority of Mac users ignore virus protection while Windows users are more often aware and already have anti-virus software installed and auto-updating. What happens when a widespread virus finally hits unprotected Mac OSX users? Like most every other Windows user, I haven't cared about viruses on Windows in a decade since the AV software takes care of it for me.
Viruses are not really the concern. Viruses are only programs that try to exploit the system. There is no need to send a virus to a Mac if you can exploit it more directly. Mac OS has had some serious security holes that allow remote attackers root access to the system with minimal effort, even if the Mac OS firewall is turned on.
    >AutoCAD... 3d Studio
Running AutoCAD and 3D Studio is the Mac deal breaker. You must stick with Windows. You could run these apps on a Mac if you ran a virtual Windows OS on top of Mac OS, but then you're still running Windows (and with less available RAM since you are running two OSs at once). The other option is to have a dual boot system so that you could boot into Windows directly; but rebooting is a time waster.
So the switch to Mac is just an expensive way to:
    buy new hardware
waste time/money converting app licenses from Windows to Mac
waste time/money troubleshooting quirks of integrating a new system within your company
spend time retraining staff on multiple systems.
The reason why you see other design shops using Mac is the same reason why you are using Windows: lock in. At one point, Mac was better (or assumed better) for graphics, just like SGI and Amiga computers were once assumed better for graphics and video. Likewise, Windows (or any system running on Intel) was assumed to be the best for 3D. If a company invests in a platform, they easily lock themselves into using that platform because it is so expensive to switch.
Those that want the gooey goodness of the Mac GUI can tweak Windows to mimic it. There are freeware apps to add a dock, Exposé, Spaces, etc to Windows.
    >The "i" apps such as iPhoto, iDVD, Garage Band are slightly easier to install, obtain, and use than their counterparts in Windows.
    What counterparts?
    >It's a battle. Can anyone out there offer any thoughts?
What is a battle? If you can't even think of nor prove a valid reason yourself, then there's no point in fighting for it.

  • Another Handoff not working - Apple has some work to do still

By the number of post I see about handoff problems…. it looks like Apple still has some work to do on this feature.  I have read countless forum posts and replies and it seems that a large number of us are having trouble with this feature.
I have pulled all my hair out trying to sort this out…. not so much as I care about the feature as I am the type that can't stand it when I can't get something working.
My hardware is all supported 2012 MBP with Yosemite Bluetooth LMP 0x6
    iPhone 5s
    Same Wifi
    Bluetooth on both devices
Both on same iCloud account turned on and active
Both have handoff enabled in respective settings
The only time I have been able to get it to work is when I wipe both iCloud accounts and then sign back on after a restart then I get the handoff dock icon when doing something like creating a new email.  But it will works once or twice and then stops all together.  Randomly sometime the icon will be on the lock screen of the iPhone.
    Very frustrating Apple!
(Yea I know 1st world problem)

Over the last week I have tried every "Windows Vista" combination of unchecking handoff, FaceTime, and signing in and out of iCloud while patting my head and rubbing my belly.  And absolutely nothing worked.  A few times I got handoff to work one time and then disappear again after a restore and power cycle but none of the countless tips I have read and seen worked.
Until today.  I was listening to the iMore Podcast this week and they were ranting about all the people that are having continuity issues and one small blurb was mentioned that I had never heard, and this little gem was solving the handoff woes for some people.  So what the heck I have tried everything else and this was simple enough.
The solution:  Change the name of your iPhone.  Setting>General>About>Name
I did this in combination with all the other Windows Vista Vudoo Handoff, FaceTime, iCloud off on both devices then power cycle.
Well once I restarted and got everything turned back on.  It worked perfect…. everything single aspect is not working as Apple had intended it to work.
Go figure…. who would have thought????

  • Stack overflow at line: 1792 or 1788 when using the search function

    Hello everyone,
My name is Thibault. I am a technical communications specialist. I've been using Robohelp html for a couple of years.
I am working on the user guide of the software application developed where I work.
This is a HUGE project, more than 6500 pages.
We're two technical writers on this project. (This is an inportant detail since my colleague doesn't get the problem).
I need your help because I have been having an annoying issue over the last couple of days.
After the project is generated, I open it in the software, clicking F1.
When I want to use the search function I have this error message displayed:
"Stack overflow at line: 1792" or "Stack overflow at line: 1788"
Do you know where this could come from?
Furthermore, I noticed that this stack overflow only occurs on some words.
I mean, it occurs for the most used words in this project.
We have customers all over the world and over the last week, we've been getting a lot of feedbacks about this error message.
I hope someone will be able to help me on this one!
    Thanks in advance!

First of all, thanks for your answer RoboColum(n).
Is the problem only when you search for a topic that contains Flash output?
All my topics contain Flash outputs. I generate my output files on a folder that is embedded into the software. When in the software, I click F1 and the Flash User Guide opens. The search function works (or not) depending on the software version (32/64-bit).
At what point exactly does the stack overview occur?
We have two versions of the software a 32-bit version and a 64-bit version.
The search function works fine with the 32-bit version.
The problem occurs when I use the 64-bit version. When I type in a word, for example "unit", the stack overflow message appears. See below:
As you can see, it looks like the search function freezes while the stack overflow message appears.
And I never get this error message with the 32-bit version of our software.
I also wonder whether you can search on a project that contains no Flash output. Perhaps you could try for us?
What do you mean by that?
As I told you previously, my Flash Player version is a 32-bit one.
Do you think that the issue might come from there?

  • Why does Creative cloud cost 33% more in the UK than in USA?

Creative cloud cost $49.99 per month in the US - which is the equivalent of £31
In the UK Creative cloud cost £46.88 which is the equivalent of $73
Sorry why are we charged so much more?
    It's the same service?
    Why?
Looks like a rip off to me.

Why does the starting price of a MacBook Air differ between the US and the UK. In the US, the price starts at $999, while in the UK it starts at £849 (or $1329.11) That is a 30%+ price difference.
This is standard for most products and services that originate in the US. First, you have the added UK VAT which is not applicable in the US. Secondly, companies build in a larger margin for their products and services when currency exchange rates need to be factored in. Finally, they also add additional margins to cover the US corporate tax for repatriated income from sales overseas, a tax which is the highest in the industrialised world at over 45% on the net profit.
So, all these factors make the price in the UK EQUAL to the price in the US in accounting and administrative terms.
Three things need to change to balance the equation from an end user perspective.
    1. VAT must be eliminated. (This is an EU and UK HMR change...thus highly unlikely).
    2. You will need to be able to choose the currency. (This is something that Adobe can configure to allow the end user to elect what currency they wish to use to make the payment. If you have a UK credit card and elect to pay in US dollars, you will carry the burden of the exchange rate, not Adobe. Having said that, it all depends on how the cost centres of Adobe are set up for accepting multiple currency payments on a per-country basis. I am assuming they do not accept multiple currencies in different jurisdictions and as such, this would require a complete reorganisation of their accounting practices, which may impact their tax obligations, but certainly will impact their financial operations in general, so I believe this will be highly unlikely to change).
    3. The US corporate tax code needs to be simplified and modernised so as it is not a penalty on corporations for earning money abroad. With the current state of stagnation and a Democrat in the White house and a Democrat majority in the Senate, a snowflake in hell has a better chance than any movement on tax reform. The Democrat principles state that corporations are bad, evil and must be subjugated to draconian controls and taxes.

  • Alternative to expensive JDBC drivers for Oracle

During the last week I have been more and more impressed with Sun Java Studio Creator and have been planning a world take-over based on my new found productivity.
Until this afternoon when I tried to deploy an app on Tomcat using an Oracle database...
Am I right in understanding that I will have to pay thousands of dollars for a Driver? I have no choice about the underlying database or app server.
Without a cheap way around the driver problem I will have to stop using SJSC, a big big shame.
Hopefully I have missed something but this seems to have been the state of affairs from previous posts, has any thing changed in the last six months?

Oh dear. My client (a local government) already has a lot of expertise and money invested in an Oracle container and won't consider changing to Sun App Server 8.1. Its out of my control!
My projects are small scale and would not justify the purchase of an expensive driver.
I guess my best option is to use Creator with MySql, but again I will have to justify why I am not using the 'standard' database.
Sun Java Studio Creator is a great product, it just works! Well done whoever manages and works on this project!
This driver issue is as we say in England, daft. its almost as if Sun and Oracle are competing in some way.
    Thanks again.

Certainly not my intention drkstr_1 and I am sorry you feel this way.  Since this is not a job posting site I was reluctant to put down a lot of detail.  I am just hoping that a few talented Flex Developers that are interested in living in Charlotte, NC (or already live there) would email me so I could connect with them and share the details.  I can assure you that these openings with my clients are outstanding oportunities with great pay, the very best in benefits, some nice perks, and the projects themselves are very interesting and challenging.  Also these are full time opportunities, not contracts.  Again, I am sorry to upset you.  Best of luck to you.
