World readable permissions on the tterrors.log and ttmesg.log

Is it possible to get timesten to create the tterrors.log and ttmesg.log with world readable permissions?
Regards
Chris

It sounds like you should just turn off Maintain Previews for the project you are on (selct prj and change state in top level gear menu in prj pane) - then make your adjustments ( your previews won't be up to date then of course) but the when you are ready to make into previews just select all the images and choose Update Preview manually from the context menu.

  • Org.clamav.freshclam and permissions error on freshclam.log

This is an adjunct to a branched discussion in this thread regarding org.clamav.freshclam continually generating error reports in the system log.
After enabling, but not starting, Mail service on my server (XServe Dual-G5, 10.5.8 Server) my system log began filling with the error as per the referenced thread. The first entry when the error cropped up was:
    Nov 5 15:23:20 xserve1 com.apple.launchd[1] (org.clamav.freshclam): Unknown key for integer: Iterations
Nov 5 15:23:20 xserve1 org.clamav.freshclam[40472]: ERROR: Incorrect argument format for option --checks (-c)
    Nov 5 15:23:20 xserve1 org.clamav.freshclam[40472]: ERROR: Can't parse command line options
    Nov 5 15:23:20 xserve1 com.apple.launchd[1] (org.clamav.freshclam[40472]): Exited with exit code: 1
    Nov 5 15:23:20 xserve1 com.apple.launchd[1] (org.clamav.freshclam): Throttling respawn: Will start in 10 seconds
Per the instructions in the referenced thread, I ran
    launchctl unload /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/org.clamav.freshclam.plist
I then used pico to edit the org.clamav.freshclamplist file, removing the space between the '-c' and value in the line:
    <string>-c 4</string>
I also edited the /etc/freshclam.conf file to change the value:
    #DatabaseMirror db.XY.clamav.net
    to
    DatabaseMirror db.us.clamav.net
    I then ran
    freshclam -v
    followed by
    launchctl load /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/org.clamav.freshclam.plist
Checking the log again, not only had the original error continued whilst I was editing, but also on the relaunch of freshclam a new error cropped up:
    Nov 7 08:35:39 xserve1 com.apple.launchd[127] (org.clamav.freshclam): Unknown key for integer: Iterations

    Nov 7 08:35:49 xserve1 com.apple.launchd[127] (org.clamav.freshclam[476]): Exited with exit code: 62
    Nov 7 08:35:49 xserve1 com.apple.launchd[127] (org.clamav.freshclam): Throttling respawn: Will start in 10 seconds
(Note: after the first 'Exited with exit code: 1' entry, it only repeated the last four lines as above as it respawned.)
Checking the ownership / permissions on the freshclam.log file showed that the owner/goup was _clamav:admin and the permisions were -rw-r----- which is proper and in line with the other clamav files in the directory. Thinking that perhaps the logfile was corrupted, I deleted it and made a new one, setting the owner, group and permissions as per the original. The log errors continued.
    Finally, in desparation, I ran
    chmod 660 /var/log/freshclam.log
setting the permissions to -rw-rw---- and the errors ceased!
Now, this is not proper file permissions nor does it explain why freshclam suddenly could not append the logfile, but freshclam is now happily churning away without generating continuous log error entries. For the moment, I am not going to argue with successful results!

    Hi Fred,
interesting.. but I'm of the mind "If it ain't broke.." and it has been running without problem since applying the fix. I may end up having to migrate Mail services to a different server soon though, so I'll keep it in mind if the error crops up again. Thanks for the tip!

  • Steps after you replace the hard drive and add RAM

I like to tear things apart. I'm gonna put a bigger HD in my 12" G4 powerbook (160GB), and boosting the RAM. Got the physical stuff down. Not a computer operator type at all though. So when I fire this puppy back up, is there hard drive partitioning to do, do ya have to hold down the C key while it boots up. Anybody got a link that walks ya through the steps. Gonna do the same to my black macbook 2 GHz intel machine and lookin for an "after" link for that as well.
    Thanks in advance,
    JC

    Welcome to the Apple discussions.
You have a couple of choices. If you have an external hard drive with a firewire connection that has a bootable backup, hold the option key down when you boot up, it will show you that drive, choose it, and it will boot from it. Bring up disk utility, choose the new hard drive, erase it, giving it a name and choosing mac OS X extended (journaled). You can then highlight the drive name you just created, and under Partition check to ensure under options that it's the Apple partition map. If you only want one partition for the whole drive, you can then use a program like SuperDuper to copy the contents of your external hard drive backup to the new internal hard drive.
If you have one of the TechTool programs, you may want to run the disk analysis to ensure the new hard drive checks out.
If you don't have a firewire-based external backup, use your original OS X disk to boot, and when the menu bar comes up, choose disk utility, erase/partition the drive, then continue with the installation. Then download the combo version of the latest OS X update for your Tiger/Leopard/etc version (the combo version has all prior updates), repair disk permissions, install the combo update, and repair disk permissions again. Then do your software update (click on the blue apple on the menu bar) to pick up any other upgrades you need. The reason to install the combo update is sometimes software update flubs the install, and you don't need to deal with weird issues with the base OS X system.

  • Do you have to 'Repair Permissions', on the ipad?

Do you have to 'Repair Permissions', on the ipad?
and… if YES - how do you do it?
    if NO - why not?
    Thank you.

There is no such option for the iPad as there is for a computer because the iPad uses a stripped-down version of Mac OS X.

  • Question about Removing Permissions from the System Folder with chmod

    Hi
I have a question about the removal of permissions from the System folder (and sub directories and files).
    Background
Since installing a new HD, clean install of 10.6, application of updates and moving over backed up user directories I have had several issues with permissions.
I have read several threads on this and using disk warrior and other tools I have been able to fix most of the issues.
    The Problem
The issue that remains is a permissions check using Disk Utility keeps reporting
ACL found but not expected on "System".
followed by an extensive list of sub directories and all.
Attempts to repair take hours and the same errors are reported.
    Found Solutions
I have read about changing and/or completely removing the ACL from the permissions from the System using two different commands:
sudo chmod -R -N ./System/* ( to remove all ACLs)
    or
    sudo chmod -R -E ./System/* ( to replace all ACLs )
My Question is ( to the UNIX gurus):
What is the difference between the usage with -E and -R and which is the best approach for a Systems directory and (subordinates)?
    Many thanks!!

    OK
So I misread on the your instructions about the PW reset, did it, no harm in that. I did also select the options to reset all the permissions for all the accounts and the ACL issues were not resolved. My bad, I forgot to note that.
You do suggest getting and expert opinion but alas these are rather elusive. In most cases the Apple solutions is to do a complete reinstall... I have found that unless you completely wipe a drive and rebuild everything there are often artifacts left behind. Since I have full and redundant back-ups I would rather explore and hack a little instead of a dull old system reinstall. The irony is the system issue I had was it was the result a reinstall and combo update on a new drive. I recognize the risks of entering the realms of the System folders but I am willing to explore knowing full well that I have a path to recovery.
Thanks again for your insights. I come to the forums looking for insights and ideas but not a lecture...

  • Audit log of the User access and permissions

    Hi All,
We need to have the Audit trail of the user access and permission. Meaning Changes to user access rights will be logged.
    This should include:
Current Access Rights (including Date the access was given),
Group membership (including Date the access was given),
Previous Access Rights (including Date the access was given and revoked).
Can we reuse any out of the box functionality of CQ. Does anybody having any pointer to this?
    Thanks,
    Debasis

    Hi PChamoun,
At the outset thanks a lot for the clue. I am very new to CQ. Could you please guide me like, what are the API required to track the rep:policy node changes. Even if workflow will be started after any change to rep:policy but how I will be able to get the information of what change happened.
    Thanks,
    Debasis

  • What is in the PostgreSQL_Server_Services.log File and How do I Shrink it?

I know OS X Server uses PostgreSQL now instead of MySQL which is fine by me. I am trying to figure out what is in the PostgreSQL_Server_Services.log file in Library/Logs/PostgreSQL/ . It is about 188 GB right now and ideally instead of relocating it along with other services to another drive from the nice 256GB SSD that is in the system I would like to understand what is in the database and how to manage it's size better.
Any pointers for best practice on managing the database or what the heck is in it?
    Thanks!

Thanks for the response. I mistyped in the question as I understood it was a log file. The DB itself is only about 1-2GB. As for reviewing I am fine with modifying the permissions and examining the file in the console or other app but I am most interested in how to manage it safely. Can I just clear the log contents? If so what is the safe way to do so? I know with many DB's the log file is critical to it's function and if things happen to the log file it can render the DB unusable. In addition what is the best way to modify the rotation routine it uses and set the logging level? (I have pasted the .plist contents for Postgresql for Server Services below)
I have also downloaded and installed pgAdmin but have not gone through the steps of connecting it to the DB and log file (users setup etc.)

  • Pros and cons between the large log buffer and small log buffer?

pros and cons between the large log buffer and small log buffer?
Many people suggest that small log buffer (1-3MB) is better because we can avoid the waiting events from users. But I think that we can also have advantage with the bigger on...it's because we can reduce the redo log file I/O...
What is the optimal size of the log buffer? should I consider OLTP vs DSS as well?

    Hi,
It's interesting to note that some very large shops find that a > 10m log buffer provides better throughput. Also, check-out this new world-record benchmark, with a 60m log_buffer. The TPC notes that they chose it based on the cpu_count:
    log_buffer = 67108864 # 1048576x cpuhttp://www.dba-oracle.com/t_tpc_ibm_oracle_benchmark_terabyte.htm

We are sorry for the trouble that this has caused you. Can you please suggest if you did the migration from a previous version of MAC OS to Yosemite(10.10.1)? If yes, are you having trouble while Launching the Desktop Application? If yes, there are two steps available for us.
    1) First , please check the permission on /Library folder and see if you have full read & write access. If you don't, I would request you to have a conversation with Apple support.
    2) If the permissions are all fine on this folder, please check the same on ~/Library folder as well.
If all is fine, i would request you to please reinstall the product and try again.

  • How do I log in to my macbook pro if when logging in, it stops at the apple logo and won't move?

I logged out of my mac book pro to transfer some files from my hard drive.  When logging back in, the computer is not logging in at all... it just get stuck at the white screen at the log in apple, and keep twirling.... and just wont log in... what do I do?

Reinstall Lion, Mountain Lion, or Mavericks without erasing drive
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    Repair
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported then click on the Repair Permissions button. When the process is completed, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.
    Reinstall Mountain Lion or Mavericks
OS X Mavericks- Reinstall OS X
OS X Mountain Lion- Reinstall OS X
OS X Lion- Reinstall Mac OS X
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet
if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.

  • I continually get the Update message and when I click it runs and never completes update. This has happened everytime I log in.

Whenever I log in on my computer, I get a Firefox Update message and when I click on it it continually runs for hours and never completes the update.

If you have problems with updating or with the permissions then easiest is to download the full version and trash the currently installed version to do a clean install of the new version.
Download a new copy of the Firefox program and save the DMG file to the desktop

    * Install the new version that you have downloaded

  • My 2009 iMac gets stuck on the grey Apple logo when booting up.  It boots correctly when in safe mode. I have tried erasing the HD and re-installing from a USB installer. It says the install is complete, but after restarting it gets stuck on the Apple log

My late 2009 27" iMac gets stuck on the grey Apple logo when booting up.  It boots correctly when in safe mode. I have tried erasing the HD and re-installing from a USB installer. It says the install is complete, but after restarting it gets stuck on the Apple logo again.  This could possibly be an HD failure, but then why does Safe Mode still work and the USB install not work?  Any ideas?

    1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.
Don't be put off merely by the seeming complexity of these instructions. The process is much less complicated than the description. You do harder tasks with the computer all the time.
    2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
    3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. All it does is to collect information about the state of the computer. That information goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. However, you should be cautious about running any kind of program (not just a shell script) at the behest of a stranger. If you have doubts, search this site for other discussions in which this procedure has been followed without any report of ill effects. If you can't satisfy yourself that the instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:
☞ Copy a line of text in this window to the Clipboard.
☞ Paste into the window of another application.
☞ Wait for the test to run. It usually takes a few minutes.
☞ Paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page.
The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. You don't need to copy a second time. Details follow.
    4. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode, under the conditions in which the problem is reproduced. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
    5. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
    6. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
    7. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste by pressing command-V. The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
    8. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "syntax error," enter
    exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
    9. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, press the key combination control-C or just press return three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
    10. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress. Wait for the line
    [Process completed]
to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report the results. No harm will be done.
    11. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
At the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with "Model Identifier." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
    12. When you post the results, you might see the message, "You have included content in your post that is not permitted." It means that the forum software has misidentified something in the post as a violation of the rules. If that happens, please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.
Note: This is a public forum, and others may give you advice based on the results of the test. They speak only for themselves, and I don't necessarily agree with them.

  • DVD player 5.4 keeps crashing using a variety of DVDs.  I have OS 10.6.8, and have repaired permissions, verified the disc, and installed the 10.6.8 update combo.  Several previous questions have adressed this problem.  What is the solution?

DVD player 5.4 keeps crashing.  I have seen here that a number of other people have had this problem.  I recently started one DVD, and when I went back to it, it opened to a black screen twice.  It also crashes with other DVDs after I scroll ahead or back.  It gives an error message that it is skipping damaged areas, or sometines error 69889.  Playing this on a PC, however, there is no problem.  I repaired the permissions, verified the disc, and installed the OS 10.6.8 combo update, all to no avail.  Techs told me that it is usually the hardware, so I bought a LaCie external combo drive.  Still crashes.  Looked on Apple downloads and they don't list a 5.4 to replace this version.  Mac informer.com offers a free download for DVD 5.5- should I try this?  Why doesn't Apple fix this problem?

Your suggestions did not help.  I repeated them again after the first try did not succeed.  Any other ideas?
Would installing another copy of DVD 5.4 help?  How can I get another copy of DVD player 5.4, since Apple does not seem to offer it?  I do have the disc for Snow Leopard, but am not extremely tech savy (and maybe it is the same corrupted version).

  • When I turn on my iMac it comes up with the icon which I then log into. The password works and I then get the apple icon and the spinning wheel. After a minute it turns into a prohibited icon. If I log on the guest icon I get to Safari. Help!

When I turn on my iMac it comes up with the login icons which I then choose and log into. The password works and I then get the apple icon and the spinning wheel. After about a minute the Apple icon turns into a prohibited icon. However, if I log in under the guest icon, I can access the wifi and get to Safari. I really don't know what to do next. Any help would be gratefully appreciated.

Are you running any A-V? If it's an iMac 21.5, I don't think you're running Leopard, 10.5. Probably at least Snow Leopard, 10.6. This is the Leopard forum.
This article says meant for 10.3.9 and eariler, but contains some still useful suggestions.

Try a Safe Boot. Shift at the startup chime and expect a much longer time to boot. This will bring you to a login screen with "Safe Boot" in red.
    Look at this as well.
