Worn Out Letters

I have several keys on which the letters have worn off (a,c, n & m). I've tried using permanent markers with no success (wears off in a day or so). The local Apple Store recommends replacing the entire keyboard. This seems a bit extravagent since the keyboard works fine. I just want to restore the letters on several keys. Any suggestions for how to locate and purchase individual replacement keys? Thanks.

A low tech solution I used on mine was to get some clear peel and stick decals from Target--they were cheap and held up well.
If you decide to replace them, the relevant Apple article is:

  • Worn out letters on keyboard

I have had my ibook since April 2005 and use it only for general home use (emails and photos and music) not as a work computer, so it is used i guess for on average about an hour a day.
i have got normal fingers, honestly! but several of the letter stickers on the keyboard have worn off. has anybody else experienced this?? i don't have long nails and type with the pads of my fingers anyway.
i am out of my apple care year long warranty and am having trouble finding a way to contact apple to see if they will provide replacement keys as a goodwill gesture (is that even possible with this keyboard?)
any advice very gratefully received, thanks.

    Hi,
As the other person said, if it's out of warranty, I don't like your chances. However, there is always the option of going to the flagship store on Regent Street and seeing if they will help you.
They won't charge you anything just to look at it at the Genius Bar, so worst case scenario, they say no. I'd also emphasise that the letters started coming off within warranty, but explain why you didn't talk to them at the time.
I have heard of Apple providing free replacement keyboards for out of warranty iBooks because the letters have worn off, so it's worth a try. Otherwise, they may offer to sell you a new keyboard, but its letters will probably wear off in time too. You may want to invest in one of the third-party silicone covers for the new one.

Hi, I have had an LG Octane for 4 years and loved it. I used it for email, surfing the web and facebook. But 6 weeks ago I stopped getting text messages, I could send but not receive.  I was told it was just worn out.  So I ordered another Octane from ebay, and it wouldn't connect to the internet. I was told by Verizon that the software had been changed.  So I ordered a NEW in Box Octane and I am having trouble with that too. Bing won't work, nothing will work that will enable me to download Verizon Opera mini that still works on my old phone. I have a smart phone with another number but I LOVE the Octane for daily use. Why will my old Octane work but I can't get a NEW one to.  Verizon guys are stumped too:( Please help!!  Thanks!

Why start a new and very similar thread to your other one which you have not responded to (have you read the replies?)
I suggest that no response is made to this duplicate thread.

  • Airport Express worn out?

Is my AP Express worn out? I have a new cable modem and cable from the modem to the AE. I have to restart the AE 1 or 2 times a day. The AE is 8 or more years old and I have installed all updates. The person at the cable company seemed to think 8 years was a very long time for it to last.

8 years would be a good haul for a piece of consumer electronics that is designed to operate 24x7, 365 days/year. It may be very possible that yours has finaly had enough as well. Based on the description of the symptoms, it sounds like some of the components are starting to fail due to heat exposure.

Put in the serial number but was not offered an extended apple care plan. I guess if you purchase a new one because your old one is out of warranty you get a deal for $179 but you don't get a chance for an extended warranty. You don't get a new box or earbuds, just a brand new iPod. Good deal but since my first died under warranty, got a new one for free, second one I smashed the screen and got a new one for (I don't remember) and now the hard drive went and I paid $179 for a new one, I was hoping to get an extended warranty. But I guess not...
    Thank you!

  • Worn-out headphone jack as optical out for computer audio via external DAC

I have been using my iMac's headphone output jack to connect with a DAC and my audio system for some time now, but I apparently have inserted and removed the optical plug connector so many times to switch between DAC and internal iMac speakers that it has worn out: pulling the plug out of the jack no longer always switches the sound output back to internal speakers - Built-in. I have to pull it in and out several times and even this doesn't always work. Is anyone aware of a switch I could install to do this without constantly pulling the plug out and plugging it back in?

My suggestion to work around this problem would be to hook up an Airport Express. The AE also has an optical out the same as your iMac. As long as your wireless connection is robust enough you should be able to stream from your iMac to your AE and then have the optical cable connect between your AE and your DAC, which then connects to your Integrated Amp/Receiver/Pre-Amp (depending on your system configuration).
I assume because you are using the optical out and connecting to an external DAC that you are looking for a high level of Audio quality ?

  • Macbook Pro 2011 getting worn out

My MBP from 2011 is starting to get worn out on the keyboard. The keys i use a lot has begun to have a clear/brigt spot in the middle of it.
I was just wondering what you guys are doing to preserve your MB´s so to speak and what would you recommend me doing? I was planning on getting a keyboard cover, but I can´t seen to find any that will fit my european keyboard, or perhaps just use it as I normally would and then get it replaced at a Apple retailer.

For outer case protection I use this: http://goincase.com/products/detail/hardshell-case-cl57188m it's an incase hard surface shell, that protects my Macbook Pro. It has a nice soft feel, and rubber feet to keep it from moving on hard surfaces. It doesn't scratch and protects my MBP well. Not a dent or scratch on it. I also found this very long link on European keyboard cases hope this helps: http://www.kbcovers.com/servlet/Categories?category=MacBook%2FMacBook+Air+13%22% 3AISO+European+Keyboard%3AClear+%26+Colors

  • Worn out label ; need product key

I am using HP Pavilion dv6-3216us Entertainment Notebook PC
I formatted my  C drive to install fresh Win7 as the recovery manager failed to update  , but the product key on the rear got worn out , some of the product key characters are not clear.HP team would be able to provide me the product key???

    No they won't.
Best solution is using a tool like Windows Loader that will simply add the OEM cert files to your install making it validate to your genuine SLIC2.1 BIOS.
More manual way is in link below:
    http://techdoors.wordpress.com/2012/09/26/activating-windows-7-oem-way/
    HP won't help you & MS won't too .
People with stickers want take pic when new & email it to yourself or duplicate the serial on a sticker & put it in battery bay.
The standard new OEM stickers are very poor quality ...

  • Worn key letters after a month

I really like my brand new HP Pavillion dv7-6c52eo. However, after using it for just a month, the letters on some keys are already worn. That I don't like. What do HP think about this? It feels a bit excessive to fail a complaint about it, but still it is a quite expensive thing and quite annyoing.

We get this complaint every now and then and I have seen it on many laptops. 2 copies of the same model laptop can be used the same amount by two different people and the rate of wear on the key lettering will be different. My own theory is that some people just have skin oil that wears out keyboard keys more than others, or perhaps there is some sealant that is supposed to go over the key letters and every now and then a batch of keys goes out that is not properly sealed. In my opinion the keyboard letters ought to remain visible for at least a year even under the most intense usage. The problem is even if HP will replace the keyboard do you want to be without the laptop for 4-5 days for a new keyboard and will it just happen again? Keyboards are very cheap and easy to replace but replacing the keyboard yourself runs the risk of voiding the warranty.

  • Acrobat renders embedded text unsearchable by spreading out letters: why?

Something strange happened today when I created a single PDF page of a magazine and inserted it into the larger PDF of the entire magazine: all the letters in the words embedded in the single PDF page were automatically spread out, so this caption, in the single PDF page:
the commodore just faintly heard the words
HE WAS NOT MEANT TO HEAR”
appeared this way, on that same page within the larger PDF document:
    t h e c o m m o d o r e j u s t f a i n t l y h e a r d t h e w o r d s
    HE WA S NOT ME A N T TO H E A R ”
with white space inserted between most of the letters. This change effectively renders the text unsearchable, since no one is going to insert a space between letters when searching for words in the pdf.
Does anyone know why this happens? And is there any way of preventing it?  If it helps, this spreading out of letters seems to happen more often in headers and captions than in columns of text.  Thanks!

Not sure, but were the fonts embedded. It looks like a font issue. You might also try scrolling through the text to see if the spaces are really there.

  • IPhone missing out letters in iPod sorting

    Hello there everyone,
Since 4.1 my iPhone groups the letters J and K in the iPod sorting list. Artists starting with one of those letters are only to be found under the letter K. Is this an iOS 4.1 problem?
    Thank you.

    (iPhone 4, FW 4.1)
I had the same problem, missing J and Q in artists, songs and albums and everything starting with those letters was under K and R. I know this happened after I started using CopyTrans on a PC running Win 7, since my Macbook Pro which I normally use was in the shop. From reading different forums I have concluded that missing Js and Qs is quite specific and totally different from if you have other letters missing or even if none are missing just some of your titles are under the wrong letter (I have had this happen on my old iPod Touch 1st Gen and just renaming twice helped in that situation but this was on some really old FW, like 3.1.1 or something).
The way I fixed the J/Q issue was by starting iTunes on the same computer that I had used CopyTrans on and played a random song in order to initiate a sync (I didn't want to press the sync button since I've had very bad experiences with using that ** button, keep in mind that I have always used "manually manage"), waited for the sync to finish and all was back to normal. J and Q reappeared, all the titles were properly organized and none of my songs or apps or anything was deleted. I guess CopyTrans probably makes the iPod apps database bug out.
Once again this is definitely the solution if you have used CopyTrans (and I'm pretty sure any other programs like that), if you are using iTunes only and are missing _J and Q_ then from what I've read an update should fix the problem.

  • Strip out letters and dashes and some numbers

is there any quick way to take stuff out of a string?
what i have is a job number that looks like this.
    AAA-999-07
what i need to do is remove the 3 letters and the dash before the number and the dash and the last 2 numbers after that. so i would be left with just the 999.
is there some way to do that in the query when i select it?
    thanks

    thanks for the info everyone.
i will try it out. but i am not sure where to put this code. do i put it in the same place as where i have my select statement?
and also i need it to do that for a bunch of records. basically here is my select:
    SELECT
    "JOBS"."JOB_NUMBER" "JOB_NUMBER",
    "JOBS"."JOB_NAME" "JOB_NAME",
    "CLIENTS"."CLIENT_ABBR"
    FROM
    "JOBS" "JOBS",
    "CLIENTS" "CLIENTS"
    WHERE "JOBS"."JOB_CLIENT" = "CLIENTS"."CLIENT"
    and (("JOBS"."JOB_NUMBER" LIKE v('P3_EMP_HOURS_CLIENT')||'%'))
    and "JOBS"."JOB_STATUS" = 'OPEN'
    order by "JOBS"."JOB_NUMBER"
now the "JOB_NUMBER" is what i need to strip. can i do something like this:
    DECLARE
    thestring varchar2(100) := "JOB_NUMBER";
    BEGIN
    thestring := regexp_replace(thestring,'[[:alnum:]]+-([[:alnum:]]+)-[[:alnum:]]+','\1');
    htp.p(thestring);
    END;
and gpc can i replace the AAA-999-07 with "JOB_NUMBER" and have it work?
Pleiadian, thanks for the reply that would be the easiest thing to do but some of the job numbers are 4 numbers instead of 3.

  • Security Slot Worn Out

After about 3 weeks of use, the security slot on my MBP is starting to wear out. The lock wiggles around in the slot, whereas it used to be securely attached. I've read several stories about how the slot wears to the point that the lock just comes out.
    1. Is there any brand of lock that won't continue to wear it out? I'm using a Kensington MicroSaver DS right now.
    2. Will Apple fix this? I'm still under warranty.
    3. If they do fix it, have they changed the design at all so that this doesn't happen?
Is there anything I can do? Thanks for reading.

Nope, it's not covered by warrenty. It cost me a couple hundred bucks to have the case replaced on my Powerbook the first year I had it. Now my Macbook Pro is worn after a year. The problem is Apple uses a piece of plastic to line the security slot. That's right, Steve Jobs considers a 1mm thin ring of plastic to be "security." This has been a problem with a Apple notebooks for many years. I've been on the phone with them many times, and, well, Apple doesn't care.
    Sorry, but you are SOL.

  • Worn out software, useless crapware on a brand new HP Envy laptop

I purchased an HP Envy last week. Brand new - i7, 8GB ram, 1TB disk. Screaming machine. Crammed with crap. And I got it from BestBuy.
My primary purpose in buying my laptop was specifically Cyberlink PowerDirector, which came with the machine via Cyberlink Multimedia Suite. Nice. Except that the suite - and all of the products inside it including PowerDirector - is two releases old. It came with PD v10, and the current release is v12.
You disabled Windows Defender, then installed McAfee Anti virus software, and then advertised that the system came with McAfee. McAfee requires an annual subscription, with the first year free (offered by McAfee, not BestBuy). So it's not exactly "free". Shame on you. It is not HP's policy to do this, says HP tech support, it was BestBuy's policy. In fact, HP does not recommend, nor support, McAfee or Norton (another common after-market add-in).
Adding insult to injury, my purchase ALSO included a "free" anti-virus software, offered by the reseller, one of three that I could choose between WebRoot, McAfee, and TrendMicro. Of course, it's not really free again: I have to purchase a subscription. But I now have THREE anti-virus applications.
Next, there were two copies of CyberLink YouCam. One is called "YouCam", the other is "YouCam 5". They are both from CyberLink. They are the same application, except that one is older version than the other, and neither are the latest copies.
Next, there are several multimedia players - Windows Media player, Cyberlink, and sMedio. Really: how many do I need?
You did the same with photo viewers and mangers: Windows Photo Gallery, Picture Gallery, and arguably Windows File Explorer.
Then you did it again with music players: Windows Media Player, XBox, HP Connected Music.
Then you did it again with file sharing: Box, SkyDrive, HP Connected Drive.
And you did it again with video editors: Movie Maker and Cyberlink.
And again with messenger/chat software: Skype and Pinger.
What's more - you didn't provide any documentation for any of the software you crammed onto the system.
Although I am happy with my laptop and accessories, you have significantly cheapened it's value, as I now have to spend a great deal of time figuring out which are needed Windows components, which is crapware, and which is duplicated junk.
When I got it home, I took it out for a spin, and discovered the aforementioned oddities. I brought the problems to the attention of BestBuy (corporate HQ, it turned out), who referred me back to the store manager, who referred me to their GeekSquad, who never - 2 weeks later - responded back.
At the same time, I contacted HP tech support, who confided in me that they have no knowledge of how this software got installed, who installed it, or who to go to for support. They don't even recommend using some of the software that came instlled (eg, McAfee).
Nice. So HP is blaming BB. So I personally went into BB with my rant, and spoke with a Geek, who walked me through a series of steps. Honestly, it was nice being talked to like a child, for it made me realize how the process worked.
"Did you order a custom machine?" "No."
"Was the box opened before you opened it?" "No."
"Was there a packing slip on the box?" "Yes. It indicates it came from an HP shipping center."
"So, you got an unopened box from HP, and you want to know where/when/how we installed that software?" "Uh, well..."
Nice. Now I have HP blaming BestBuy, and BestBuy blaming HP. However, BB seemed to be playing the role of tactful diplomat: Geek suggested the possibility that Microsoft coerced HP into installing the duplicate/crapware/old software.
I'm not buying it: I came from HP's factory, and much of the duplicate stuff is from HP which overlaps MS applications. And why would MS induce anyone to disable Windows Defender so that a competing product can be used, or, why would MS induce anyone to include PowerDirector on top of MovieMaker?
So, HP, I challenge you to explain why my new machine contains old/duplicate/crapware.  Did BB put you up to the specs?  Did MS put you up to the specs?

If it makes you feel any better, I ordered my HP Envy 17-j184nr directly from HP and it came with all of the same crap installed, and I've spend hours trying to get everything cleaned up so it's actually useable.
