Worried about bluetooth security

I was checking out my wi- fi and bluetooth connections on my phone - came across section on PAIRING pressed this option thinking it may link to my computer but my NEIGHBOURS name and code came up with the computer icon We have had trouble in the past from these horrid creatures and this has worried me Dear blackberry people - should I be worried? : ( Why would their details come up when I am trying to connect to my own devices?

Hi and Welcome to the Community!
As long as you don't complete a pairing process, there is no ability for the two devices to communicate. Any BT capable device that is 1) in range and 2) is broadcasting itself for pairing will show up on any other device. But, until you complete the pairing, there is nothing to be concerned about. If you remain worried and wish to do more, your only recourse is to turn the BT radio on your device off (which, of course, negates your ability to use ANY BT functions).
Good luck!

Relax.  This is completely normal and is not unusual at all.
    It will be reversed.

  • Something to worry about? - Security issue?

    iMac
    OSX 10.10.1
Transfer of files from a USB Flash Drive
    1) - Transferred file from one USB FlashDrive to another USB FlashDrive.
    2) - Attempted to eject USB devices - Window appeared stating Finder is using device (it wasn't!) - eventually they were ejected.
    3) - Spotlight Search identified a number of MAIL & MESSAGE items (recent emails with subject details)
    4) - Could not open these - when I attempted to I got this on the right side of the search window :-
    5) - a four digit .emix file (which could not be opened) and below this in grey were the initials sw vers -
underneath this was the message  Created   Application <DNL>
    6) - Attempting to open the .emix file produced a window with the message :-
You do not have permission to open the document "    .emix".
Contact your computer or network administrator for assistance..
Has a DNL application been created?
What does this mean if it has?
And ... Is it something for me to worry about?

illusory wrote:My logs on my system check out well. The connection attempts I mentioned are all from my router's log. How can I check to make sure there isn't anything running listening in on those ports? What can I do to disable these services if necessary?
As a device, which faces internet, I guess it's normal for the router to detect some connection attempts either by mistake, or from port scanners, kids, etc...
The services run on your machines, not on the router. The only one on the router should be either telnet or httpd for configuration. In order to protect your internal network, you only need to disable remote adminitstration on the router (or whatever it is called in your case, that is the router should be accessible for administration only from the LAN) and port forwarding (also on the router, so that requests are not forwarded to the LAN). • I'm really worried about the security of my information. I have just turned on and tried to set up my new Iphone5. It keeps asking for my ex partners login details? She has never had access to my account??

I really dont understand how this works ....? Is this not a helpline??

    No, this is community forums.
Did you and your ex ever share an iCloud account or Apple ID?
When is it asking for the info?
Did you plug your phone into your computer to sync with iTunes? If so, it's nothing to worry about probably, it's probably trying to grab and app or something from your iTunes library from her account.

  • Firefox starts with old tabs and windows I had visited ages ago, not a new blank window. It is opening up a tab containing a credit card transaction I had completed last week, so I am worried about the security risks your browser is posing right now.

Few times a week, ff opens after boot with random tabs from history open. But today it kept opening the same set of windows (not tabs) from random points of time from history. It stopped after I closed 4 of them and browsed a bit with the last and closed it with tabs open. Then it resumed opening the previously saved tabs. The usual situation with tabs occurs generally after I close firefox with no tabs and no websites loaded and I shut down the computer.
I do have a large amount of history, I generally clear only sensitive sites from history by searching and clicking forget this site.

Dear Colbabomb; thankyou for your links.
So far, I looked at your first solution, Revo Uninstaller and it gives you a 30 free trial. Ergo, it will eventually cost money so I'm leery of using those kinds of programs in general, meaning most "free trials" have unwanted strings attached and often are big probs to get rid of later. Perhaps you can assure me that it is easy and very user friendly, before I proceed. And I already ran malwarebytes and it found nothing tho the program still can't be uninstalled. I downloaded Adw Cleaner and during the install, my Norton's security popped up and warned that there were (low risk) threats with two of their "other offers" and i hadn't even actually clicked to agree either of them. Nonetheless, Norton warned me against the "lyrics finder" and "deal ply." In fact, there was a box already with an x in it, saying that you are accepting deal ply if you x on "next." Well, except I unchecked that box before clicking on next, yet when it went to fully install, it still showed that it was adding itself; so, just before the install was 100% completed, I had to abort the whole thing. I really do hope your other suggestions are programs that you personally know that they don't try and trick you. But right now, I would not suggest Adw Cleaner to anyone. I even read the fine print about what they will try and install and how to decline and it still tried sticking stuff on that i believed I had declined. Anyways, i have to leave now, shall pick up later this evening, if my pc is still functioning.

  • Time capsule is in for service repair & I'm worried about my data security

My time capsule's power supply is broken and is in for repair. I am worried about the privacy and security of my files and information stored on the hard drive. The time capsule is normally used for back up on my iMac and my iMac requires a password to log in.
Can the service repair people access my data stored in the time capsule? They said in order to replace the power supply, they will need to delete all stored data.
I've heard that some people remove the hard drive of their time capsule before putting it in repair to protect their information.
Please help, I don't like the idea that my personal documents and privacy could be compromised. Thanks.

Sorry, wrong forum to post. Reposted under Time Capsule.

  • Worried about online gaming and security!

Currently playing Quake 4 on my iMac. All of a sudden my cd-key doesn't work with a message "your cd-key is in use", waited a few minutes, restarted and it worked fine.
I'm worried that someone got access to it. Should I be worried about other files, systems, etc... on my iMac. Anyone know of any concerns?
Sorry, don't know if this the right place.

Highly, highly unlikely your system was compromised. Gaining remote entry to your filesystem would've required some kind of trojan backdoor or exploit. And considering that there are very few in existence for the mac, and practically none in the wild, the chance that there would be one stealing Quake 4 keys is about zero.
That message could've been the result of a network error, or a previous login session of yours that hadn't been terminated on their end yet. Also, pirated copies of games often use randomly generated keys, so it is possible that a copy of yours came up. Either way, if it doesn't keep happening, I wouldn't worry about it.

  • Advice needed about Bluetooth

HI to everyone. I had a very weird situation a few weeks ago when I discovered that the Bluetooth had been activated. I don't use it and don't know much about its Function apart from it's a security issue and it links with other devices in the area. I'm very concerned that something could have been added to the pad but don't know where to start looking? Any help is much appreciated!

You do not have, IMHO, anything at all to worry about. Bluetooth is used to connect certain devices (mouse, keyboard' for example). The range is about 30 feet (10 meters). It cannot be used to penetrate a network, for example. If a Bluetooth device was, somehow, able to connect to your system, it would not have passwords, etc. to be able to do anything. Bluetooth is not, again IMHO, any kind of security issue.
if you do not use it, turn it off.

  • Worried about Software Update

I have a new MacBook Pro 17, and I installed all my old PPC programs and currently have no problems running any of them, including Photoshop 7, Illustrator 10, InDesign CS, and MS Office 2004.
However, I have installed precisely NONE of the Apple software updates since getting my computer a week ago, because I'd read about so many people having problems after installing the 10.4.7 update and the QuickTime update. Am I being overly cautious? Should I install any of these updates, or are there specific updates I should avoid?
    Thank to anyone who answers!

I think you are being very overly cautious....
The updates are desinged to work, work with me and everyone else I know.
Bear in mind that which would you prefer, not updating and have the increased security risks from viruses and hackers.
Or be worried about using the free software that is desinged to protect your shiny new computer?
I'm not being overly cautious, myself. I install most updates within a few hours after they come out. I'm just providing information for people who do worry.
But do be aware that once in a rare while a Mac OS update has had a horrendous problem (there was a particularly bad one about a year - maybe longer - ago that had to be withdrawn and then re-released), and it's a good idea to be backed up so you can back out of it, in that case.
It's always a good idea to be backed up, regardless - unless you don't have anything on your computer that you care about losing.
Come on, just intsall them. besides you can sit on Apple if the update buggers up your comp, (which it won't)
Again, it has happened, and it could again. It's very rare - I agree it's not something to be overly concerned about. Yes, don't worry too much, but also, yes, do back up at least the files you can't afford to lose in case the most unlikely - but possible - thing does happen, and an update causes problems on your Mac. (Keep in mind also that, while it's very rare for a Mac OS update in itself to seriously mess up your Mac, there are plenty of situations where preexisting problems in your installation can be compounded by a major update, making your Mac unusable. Again, backups are the key to this not causing data loss.)

  • Do I have to worry about my macpro getting hacked?

Do I have to worry about my macpro getting hacked?

The SSL problem has been handled by Apple through security updates to the Mavericks and Mountain Lion and Lion operating systems.  If your operating systems are up-to-date you have little to worry about.
The Mac OS X Mavericks update, 10.9.2, is quick and easy to install.
The concerns with the SSL flaw are with using an unsecure public wireless network.  If you are using your MBP on a wired network or your own network there is very little likelihood of a problem.  The flaw did not allow access to the computer, just third-party eavesdropping on the communication.
But, one should always be aware of the risks involved in transmitting sensitive information such as credit card numbers, bank account information, over any public wireless network.  Always use proper secure and encrypted communications when doing that.

It's probably not a secure wifi network. So don't use any financial or purchase sites where you have to enter your ID/password or credit card info.

The imac 24 can't be used as a monitor over a DVI connection or the like, Suzanne, but you may be able to achieve what you want to using "Screen Sharing" by networking the two computers. This lets your MBP effectively control what is running on the iMac.
See HERE for the basic setup. For information about how to access the "shareable" screen from the MBP see HERE.
One possible problem may be actually getting this set-up on the iMac if it is not already enabled, however, unless you can borrow a keyboard from someone (your password may have to be entered to enable it). You may be able to get around this, if necessary, using the "keyboard viewer" (which you can place in the menubar using System preferences > Keyboard, if you don't already have it there).
    Cheers

  • Worried about my order

Hello,  I pre-ordered the Z3 phone 11 hours ago from the sonymobile store, with the offer to get the £90 bluetooth headset for £1 with it. When I finished the process of typing my card details in and verified by visa, I was promptly taken back to the first page again. There was nothing like Thanks for your order or even an e-mail confirming that I had bought it. I checked my bank account and indeed £550 was deducted for Debit card transaction.
I'm just a little worried about what happened as it's a lot of money with no information in return. I cannot find any page to check my order history on the website either. Should I be worried? or will I recieve an e-mail at some point. Really confused here.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Thank you for that post, I still haven't recieved the e-mail yet from sony about the situation or the confirmation. I'm thinking the confirmation e-mail might come when the date the phone is to be sent, it's strange though... We should've recieved something to let us know we ordered it and that £550 was going to be taken from us.
The 48 hours they said they would endeavour to reply within is nearing its end. I am going to head to bed now as I have work tonight again, then if nothing has been sent to me I will contact them in the morning. Still feeling optimistic
Yes I think Amazon has set a high with their customer service which most other companies are struggling to reach and all their consumers take it for granted now believing that everywhere is the same. If only

  • What is the best app for a password keeper? Should I have to worry about hacking or information exploitation, etc.?

I have jusst switched from a Blackberry to my new iPhone 5s. One feature that Blackberry had built into it already was a password keeper where all I needed to remeber was one master password and the rest of my passwords and information were securely locked away. I'm in search for an App I can trust that has a secure network. One I don't have to worry about the possibility of beine hacked and all my information being stolen. Maybe I'm being overly concerned, but you can never know now a days. So if anyone has any insight on this particular subject, I'd love to hear. Thank you.

    One of the best, IMO:

    Howdy Libbidydooda,
There are a couple of possibilities that may apply to the email you have received regarding your Apple ID. The first is that the email may be a legitimate warning that your Apple ID has been compromised. For this reason I would suggest that you change the password to your Apple ID as soon as possible. Use the instructions on this page -
Apple ID: Changing your password - Apple Support
In order to increase security for your Apple ID you may want to set up and use two-step verification. See this article for information about it -
Frequently asked questions about two-step verification for Apple ID - Apple Support
The second possibilty is that the email is an attempt at "phishing" in order to get you to reveal personal information. Typically this is done with an email that looks like it comes from an official source but has links to web pages that, while they may look like they are real, may actually be gathering your information for use by others. This article has more information about phishing -
Identifying fraudulent "phishing" email - Apple Support
For this reason it is important that you do not follow any links in the email, as they may compromise your security.
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.
    Best,
    Brett L
