Worried about iMac temperature

My iMac's CPU temperature monitor sometimes goes up to 175˚ Fahrenheit, and stays at 140˚ Fahrenheit constantly. I'm worried about it. What is the average temperature for an iMac? Should I be worried at these temps? Is it damaging to be at these levels for an extended period of time?
Thanks for your help!
EDIT: Oops! I put this in the wrong forum. Could a mod please move it? Sorry...

Max, welcome to the discussions!
Mine stays around 150-150F also, depending on what I am doing. I wouldn't be concerned about that, bit 175F is pretty warm. Forunately, your Mac should shut itself down before any damage occurs.
You might want to open yours up and remove some dust and such it there is any around. Clear the vents also. Some people have reported that doing so has reduced their temps.

  • Worrying about iMac with Logic Pro. (i mean big fan noise)

    hi.
i am thinking about buying a new iMac with Apogee Ensemble. but i am a bit worried about the fan noise from imac when i use lots of plug-ins and etc.
well... the best way is to buy a Mac Pro and stash the machine in a machine room or a cabinet or something. but the budget is low here.
does anyone have any good ideas? do i have to take the fan noises? or is it really so powerful so that makes no such big fan noises?
    thanks

I have no doubt that you and I haven't been reading the same posts, but I was under the impression that most people were much more infuriated that there was no announcement or run up to the launch (and thus they bought L9 just before).
Actually, we have been reading the same posts! Apple, historically, have never (and I do mean NEVER) pre-announce releases of Logic Pro. They are always announced on release day, even going back to before the Mac App Store, when boxed versions were still available. Apple do have quite a generous refund policy, so I suggest that anyone who feels cheated could always 'report an issue' via the link in the receipt email and try and obtain a refund. Personally, I would never buy a current version of Logic Pro until July was over, but as I've been using it for over 11 years now (before Apple bought Emagic), I guess I'm very familiar with the release times.
So why not keep support for EXSManager/Keymap, or at least a download link for paying customers. There is no other program that can do what it did unless you want to go back to an old version of Logic and utilise functionality that they removed yet is still relevant today.
Redmatica wouldn't have been allowed (under the terms and conditions of the buyout), to keep making the EXSManager, it would have been illegal as it's now an Apple product. That's like saying why didn't Emagic keep making a version of Logic for the PC after Apple bought them, because they obviously weren't allowed under the terms and conditions because it became an Apple product. While I can understand your frustration, you also have to understand the legalities that take place during takeovers and buyouts, as it's really not as simple as it may at first appear.

  • 24" iMac temperature concerns...

I've had the new 24" iMac since last Thursday - absolutely fantastic computer, and I'm thrilled with it. Speed, screen size, everything is great, but I'm quite worried about the temperature of the thing.
It gets EXTREMELY hot, I mean, hot enough to feel from a normal seated range.
Should I be worried about this? I haven't had a new-ish Mac in ages, so I'm not sure if it's normal or not.
Has anyone else experienced this? Thanks all!

    Hello everyone.
Sorry to Bump this post, but I just got a new 24" iMac after 6 months with a Intel 17" iMac that gave me no problems whatsoever..
I have read this thread attentively and followed instructions accordingly.. Using Temperature Monitor, my Smart Disk is always at 50-52ºC (~124 F) and my CPU Cores 1 and 2 from 44ºC to 60ºC (thats ~111 F to ~140 F)....
I came to seek help on this matter because the top part of my 24" iMac is very hot.. too hot to leave my hand there, even... and only after a few hours with the computer on; I run some applications like iTunes, iPhoto, Safari, Messenger (and Temperature Monitor) plus run World of Warcraft on window mode at 1900x1200. Now, I have done all this (and more, live video editing using iMovie) on my 17" Intel CoreDuo iMac for sometimes up to 8 / 10 hours a day and it never got hot enough to become a concern.
What is going on? According to some posts, the top left part of the iMac is the HD, while the lower part has the CPU Cores. My questions are these:
    1. What is the normal temperature for the iMac 24" running apllications that are CPU intensive and GraphicsCard intensive?
    2. When (in measurements) does Hot become Too Hot?
    3. Having constant temperatures as follows, is it a sign of malfunction? Should I contact the store?
    SMART Disk: 50-53.0º (~124 F)
    CPU Core 1: 44-59.0º (~111 F to ~138 F)
    CPU Core 2: 44-60.0º (~111 F to ~140 F)
And this only after say, 3 or 4 hours of activity..

  • Can I turn off mu iCloud without losing all my documents on my iMac?My iCloud window popped up unexpectedly, and am worried about a hacker. HELP.

Can I turn off, or remove myself my iCloud account, without losing all my documents on my iMac? My iCloud window popped up unexpectedly, and am worried about a hacker. When I try and sign out of iCloud, The iCloud window is giving me a message that "If you turn off Documents & Data, all documents stored in iCloud will be removed from this Mac". I have iMac OS X 10.7.5, 2.7ghz, Intel core i5. I don't use my iCloud service, and I somehow my iPhone linked it to my computer by mistake. I don't want the service or need it, & don't want my info in cyberspace. I don't want to lose my documents on my hard drive, and it appears that I haven't used any data in iCloud, as 5GB of 5GB is available. HELP.

I would love to hear that Apple has remedied this problem. From other discussion strings that I am following related to this issue, it seems thus far we remain out of luck. I did discover that if I log onto iCloud.com I can access my files that way.  Still, what a pain.
When I got the message re iCloud Drive as I was setting up my phone after the update to iOS8, it said I wouldn't be able to access my files unless all of my devices were running iOS8 OR Yosemite. That message was misleading as it really should have said all devices need to be running iOS8 AND your mac needs to be running Yosemite, as it was not an "either or" situation.  So frustrating...

  • IMac temperatures

Just wondering if this is a normal temp...
I downloaded smc fan control and istat pro since I've noticed my upper left corner of my iMac was really hot. (I have the newest imac that was released in Nov 2011 running OSX 10.7.4)
These are the temps I've been seeing with istat pro... (in celsius)
    HD mac : 50-55
    CPU : 47-56
    Ambient : 31-34
    GPU diode : 56-58
    GPU heat sink : 54-55
    Mem controler : 56-58
    Optical drive : 46-49
    Power supply 2 : 67-70
    Nothing to be worried about?
At what temperatures should I start to worry or up the fans in SMC fan control? the temp i see on that right now is 48 with around 1400 rpm
    Thanks!

Might try smcFan Control. In conjunction with that, I also have a fan blowing at the back of the computer to dissipate the heat from the aluminum back. But not much can be done when it's just a case of hot air being blown around. We've been having a bad heatwave here -- it's 30C inside right now -- and I just don't use the computer as often, allowing it to sleep frequently to cool off. HD  temps constantly in excess of 45C aren't that healthy. I don't let it stay in the upper 40s for long.
If you use smcFan -- or even without -- you must pay attention to keeping the air intake grilles (there is one running along the bottom and one behind the stand) free of dust by periodic vacuuming,

  • Imac temperatures ¿too high?

    Hi,
I've owned my Imac G5 for about 6 months now, and the other day I had my hand placed on the top of the screen and I noticed it was quite hot for the normal. I live in Spain and its about 36º in the afternoon (96F), maybe its just the Imac facing the summer, I don't now. Anyway, I'll leave the stats of the temperatures from a widget I've got so you can know a little bit more, thanks

The information Chris CA gave you was absolutely accurate - if your computer gets too hot, the power supply unit will automatically shut it down when it exceeds the recommended temperature, so until that happens, you don't need to worry about it. And you are posting in the wrong place, this is for PPC iMacs, which have not been produced for several years. You have an intel and he gave you the correct forum to post in.
His information was not only correct, but useful as well, if you trouble to read and understand it instead of being snarky!

I'm worried about losing photos/videos of my children. Im not sure if there's something special I need to do once I turn it back on; in the meantime, its still on... which I'm afraid the picture on the screen will burn into the screen. Does that happen on iMac's? Thx!

Try a hard reset. ( holding Power til it restarts)
Once to your desktop. Click the Apple icon >> About this mac >> More info>> Storage
Once you see what you have the most of. Try to see what you can delete.
Open up any folder>>all files>> or buy an external to store more data.
Once deleting make sure you empty your trash.
If you are new and its a new computer, you might need to bring it to a store for further assistence.

  • Worried about upgrading from 10.2.8 to Tiger

I know, everyone tells me I should upgrad to Tiger. I've been using 10.2.8 for some time now on my iMac FP and I got a lot of applications on it. My thinking is "If it aint broke, don't fix it" but I am finding that new stuff like the newest Java and iLife, etc., don't run on 10.2.8.
So, can everyone put my worries to rest? I guess I want to do the "upgrade" so I don't lose my existing apps. I have two large firewire drives. If I back everything up to there, is that a good idea? Or, since I'm doing an update, I don't have to worry about that? When you upgrade, what happens to all the apps you've installed in the "Application" folder? Are they still there? I would think that things like "Terminal" and other OSX apps would be replaced.
My internal drive is 80G and I'm using about 33G of that. I have one FW external drive that has 140G available. Should I "clone" my 33G internal to it, then do a clean install. If I do that, how do I get my stuff back over from the clone to the newly formatted 80G internal with Tiger on it.
I'm sorry for all the questions, but its a big step for me to take. Is upgrading just as good as doing a clean install?
    More questions, I know.
    Well, I'll stop now.
    Thanks in advance,
    Alfredo

If we go right back to the original Question we can assume that you are concerned about loss of data and the possibilty that a new or upgraded os will not operate to your satisfaction.
Point 1. regardless of what you do relating to the os you must have a backup?
Point 2. If you do not have a backup then make one. This is without question the most important fact of all time regarding data on a computer regardless of what system amd which os you run.
Point 3. all advice given by others is good, the choice of which app to use regarding a backup is often personal as many apps do the job as required.
Point 4. If a backup exists then you already have your insurance. Making changes to your os can be done without worry as this is the primary reason that backup apps exist. If we ever take the time to read the "read me files"
All of them state that we should make a backup before installing new data!
Point 5. I wish you a happy Christmas and wish all a happy mac in the new year.
    regards

I installed Mountain Lion in my IMac and now, some times, when I start up my mac it looks with a black screen and white text. I'm really worry about it, can somebody help me?

Don't worry, this is probably just Verbose Mode. It's perfectly harmless.  If you're not specifically invoking it, than it's probably down to an unwanted setting in NVRAM.  See this article on resetting NVRAM if it continues to bother you.

  • Something to worry about? - Security issue?

    3) - Spotlight Search identified a number of MAIL & MESSAGE items (recent emails with subject details)
    4) - Could not open these - when I attempted to I got this on the right side of the search window :-
    5) - a four digit .emix file (which could not be opened) and below this in grey were the initials sw vers -
underneath this was the message  Created   Application <DNL>
    6) - Attempting to open the .emix file produced a window with the message :-
You do not have permission to open the document "    .emix".

illusory wrote:My logs on my system check out well. The connection attempts I mentioned are all from my router's log. How can I check to make sure there isn't anything running listening in on those ports? What can I do to disable these services if necessary?
As a device, which faces internet, I guess it's normal for the router to detect some connection attempts either by mistake, or from port scanners, kids, etc...
The services run on your machines, not on the router. The only one on the router should be either telnet or httpd for configuration. In order to protect your internal network, you only need to disable remote adminitstration on the router (or whatever it is called in your case, that is the router should be accessible for administration only from the LAN) and port forwarding (also on the router, so that requests are not forwarded to the LAN). • Worried about online gaming and security!

Currently playing Quake 4 on my iMac. All of a sudden my cd-key doesn't work with a message "your cd-key is in use", waited a few minutes, restarted and it worked fine.
I'm worried that someone got access to it. Should I be worried about other files, systems, etc... on my iMac. Anyone know of any concerns?
Sorry, don't know if this the right place.

Highly, highly unlikely your system was compromised. Gaining remote entry to your filesystem would've required some kind of trojan backdoor or exploit. And considering that there are very few in existence for the mac, and practically none in the wild, the chance that there would be one stealing Quake 4 keys is about zero.
That message could've been the result of a network error, or a previous login session of yours that hadn't been terminated on their end yet. Also, pirated copies of games often use randomly generated keys, so it is possible that a copy of yours came up. Either way, if it doesn't keep happening, I wouldn't worry about it.

  • Worried about need to constantly repair disk permissions

Here is my analysis and conclusions as to why I need to constantly repair disk permissions:
I recently got the top-o'-the-line iMac (see info below) which shipped with Lion but since I wanted Snow Leopard (just because I have a few PowerPC games that I can't live  without) I reformatted the hard drive - into 1 partition from the 2 that Lion had - and installed Snow Leopard and went back to business as usual....only with one **** great and fast computer. BTW, as far as I know this computer is exactly the same computer that shipped with Snow Leopard prior to Lion's introduction. I swore that I would never get another desktop computer because this one would last me forever. My only hesitation now is because the need to constantly repair permissions means something is not right. On the one hand I could just keep on repairing (daily?) the permissions for the next 20 years, or.... what? Is it possible (or should I be asking Apple itself instead of in this forum) that there is some other difference between the Snow Leopard and the Lion versions of  this iMac - is this what "firmware" is all about? - that produces this constant need to repair permissions? If that's the case, would Apple give me a Snow Leopard-friendly logic board (and/or install the correct firmware) in exchange for the Lion logic board - or am I just going to have to live with having to perform this permissions-update function? Or is having to repair disk permissions not a big deal or something worrying about? Any ideas would be appreciated - thanks!

The imac 24 can't be used as a monitor over a DVI connection or the like, Suzanne, but you may be able to achieve what you want to using "Screen Sharing" by networking the two computers. This lets your MBP effectively control what is running on the iMac.
See HERE for the basic setup. For information about how to access the "shareable" screen from the MBP see HERE.
One possible problem may be actually getting this set-up on the iMac if it is not already enabled, however, unless you can borrow a keyboard from someone (your password may have to be entered to enable it). You may be able to get around this, if necessary, using the "keyboard viewer" (which you can place in the menubar using System preferences > Keyboard, if you don't already have it there).
    Cheers
