Worried about installation

I am expecting a new cordless phone delivery and a visit from a BT engineer on Friday and I am getting  worried by the hour having read some of these posts.
We had a land line installed here 37 years ago but about 10 years ago we terminated and opted to use mobile phones.  I went on line to order recently and was asked if there was a working line at this address which there isn't and then I gave my post code and after a few minutes checking, the system allowed me to go ahead and complete my order.  I think it has gone through as a new line.
The phone socket in the hall has been removed as it got damaged and we thought we wouldn't need it again.  There is one upstairs in the bedroom in good condition.  The little box by the front door also got damaged when we had a new door fitted but we made a cover for it.  The line from the pole to the house is still there and runs along the building to the front door but I don't know what state it is in.
In addition the plug socket for the power supply for the cordless base is on the opposite wall to the wall where I hope the new phone socket will go.  I doubt the engineer will lift the carpet to run the wire under.  Alternatively there is a power socket through the partition wall where the phone will be but I don't think he will drill through there.
I can see all these snags and I am trying to imagine what the engineer will do about them.  Is it a lottery where I may get a chap who just wants to finish for the weekend or might I get a helpful one with a degree of flexibility? What can I expect, does anyone have any real opinions.  Thank you.

Welcome to the forum. I wouldn't worry about issues that haven't arisen; most Openreach engineers will try to give helpful advice about your connections.
Don't be misled by the number of complaints and problems you see here; it's a help forum so most people who come here for the first time have a problem. Generally speaking BT are like so many big companies these days - fairly good at providing a decent basic service, but too often hopeless when a problem occurs. The odds are that you will be amongst the great majority who are trouble free.

  • Do I need to worry about this?

    It has been an interesting few months with my one year old 13" MBP. Lots of spinning beach balls followed by a hard drive crash. Apple was quick to replace the hard drive. And as I had everything backed up on Time Machine I was able to quickly restore everything.
    All was good for a few months until the beachballs, freezes, and finder crahes began again. Made another trip to the Genius bar where they thought I might have re-downloaded a corrupt file from Time Machine. They cleaned my temp files and caches and things seemed to work well in the store.
    When I returned home I had the same issues. They had prepared me for this. So a system restore, a re mount and re start of time capsule and everything seems to be working well. Speedy, no crashes, no freezes.
    The issue is that I wanted to double check so I ran disk verify and permission verify on the disk utility. To my surprise it came back with a LONG error log as below. So long, I could not get it all into this post. But it seems like a recurrent message. Do I need to worry about any of this? What should I do next, if anything? Thanks in advance for your response.

    You definitely need to repair your disk. If you can, boot from something else, such an external disk or the system discs that came with your Mac. You can also cause the disk to be repaired by booting into "Safe Mode": http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1564 . If that process can't repair your disk, you may need one of the more-powerful disk utilities such as Disk Warrior.

  • Worried about Software Update

    I have a new MacBook Pro 17, and I installed all my old PPC programs and currently have no problems running any of them, including Photoshop 7, Illustrator 10, InDesign CS, and MS Office 2004.
    However, I have installed precisely NONE of the Apple software updates since getting my computer a week ago, because I'd read about so many people having problems after installing the 10.4.7 update and the QuickTime update. Am I being overly cautious? Should I install any of these updates, or are there specific updates I should avoid?
    Thank to anyone who answers!

    I think you are being very overly cautious....
    The updates are desinged to work, work with me and everyone else I know.
    Bear in mind that which would you prefer, not updating and have the increased security risks from viruses and hackers.
    Or be worried about using the free software that is desinged to protect your shiny new computer?
    I'm not being overly cautious, myself. I install most updates within a few hours after they come out. I'm just providing information for people who do worry.
    But do be aware that once in a rare while a Mac OS update has had a horrendous problem (there was a particularly bad one about a year - maybe longer - ago that had to be withdrawn and then re-released), and it's a good idea to be backed up so you can back out of it, in that case.
    It's always a good idea to be backed up, regardless - unless you don't have anything on your computer that you care about losing.
    Come on, just intsall them. besides you can sit on Apple if the update buggers up your comp, (which it won't)
    Again, it has happened, and it could again. It's very rare - I agree it's not something to be overly concerned about. Yes, don't worry too much, but also, yes, do back up at least the files you can't afford to lose in case the most unlikely - but possible - thing does happen, and an update causes problems on your Mac. (Keep in mind also that, while it's very rare for a Mac OS update in itself to seriously mess up your Mac, there are plenty of situations where preexisting problems in your installation can be compounded by a major update, making your Mac unusable. Again, backups are the key to this not causing data loss.)

  • Strange crash with shrill noise - anything to worry about?

    A few minutes ago I was moving my cursor across the screen and accidentally clicked on the garageband icon in my dock, which I haven't used in over a year. The program goes to load and while it's loading, my computer starts emitting this loud, shrill sound while freezing up. It allowed me to open a few new windows but as I was trying to force quit Garageband (which eventually loaded up), the computer froze. I turned it off and it seems fine now but it was a strange incident...anything I should be worried about now?

    Hi Jiggymike!
    Run Repair Disk.
    THESE ARE THE STEPS FOR USING DISK UTILITY TO REPAIR YOUR HD
    1.Insert the System Install disk, Mac OS X CD-ROM disk, or Restore DVD disk, then restart the computer while holding the C key. Use the System disk, of the OS, that is currently installed.
    2.Once started up from CD or DVD, on the Menubar at the top of the screen, choose Disk Utility from the Installer contextual menu for Panther, or Utilities for Tiger.
    Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from disc to access Disk Utility.
    3.Click the First Aid tab.
    4.Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
    5.Select your Mac OS X volume, if necessary.
    6.Click Repair. If DU reports errors it has fixed, re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported.
    7.Repeat steps 5 & 6, but select the Hard Drive this time. It's usually the first listed with the manufacturer's model number. Make note of the S.M.A.R.T. status.
    8.When finished, select Quit Disk Utility from the Installer menu.
    9.Select Quit Installer from the Installer menu.
    10.In the resulting pop-up window, choose restart.
    11.After the computer has restarted, you can eject the CD.
    You should also run the Apple Hardware Test.
    Post the results.

  • With my iPhone 5s, can I record long voice memo to the cloud and not worry about storage on phone?

    With my iPhone 5s, can I record a long voice memo to the cloud and not worry about storage space on phone?

    You can't add music to the cloud, whether it will show there for streaming and redownloading depends upon what country that you are in. If you are in a country where music is available in the cloud then you don't have to download the music from the store, if you turn Settings > iTunes & App Store > Music (under the 'show all' heading) 'on' then you should be able to stream purchased music in the Music app without downloading it - your phone will need to be online in order to stream, and if using 3G/4G then it will use some of your data allowance.
    If you download an album or a track then it will be downloaded onto your phone. You can't upload music to the cloud from an iOS device. Whether music that you've bought shows for streaming depends upon what country that you are in and if the album or track remains in the store (unless you've subscribed to iTunes Match), and if you are connected to a network.

    John,
    I'd pay good money to bet it wouldn't last 5 years... I don't rate the in built power supply and as for "server grade hard disk" - Hmmmm..... The failure rate of all HD's on the market after 3 year is 60%.

  • I'm worried about what will happen if I delete my recent backup data from the phone I still own? Will I lose any progress in games that was saved in the backup?

    I'm worried about what will happen if I delete my recent backup data from the phone I still own? Will I lose any progress in games that was saved in the backup?
    I have an iPhone 4S and I keep getting those irritating notifications that tell me I need to upgrade my storage or free up space. I've deleted all I can from my music and photos without losing too many precious memories, but it's come to the point where I think I need to delete backups. However, I'm just worried that I will lose all and any log-in information that I don't remember and app/game progress that was saved to the iCloud. Please Tell me what will happen/what I can do?

    If you are asking what happens when you delete an iCloud backup, it only deletes the backup from your account.  It won't do anything to the data on your phone or in your iCloud account.  If you don't need to backup you can delete it.  (If you no longer want to back up your phone to iCloud, turn iCloud backup off in Settings>iCloud>Backup.  Then your phone will back up to your computer each time you sync it with iTunes.)

    I have just purchased a new ipad2 to replace my old ipad. How do i sync all the data in my apps I am worried about losing my data?

    iPad settings and data created and stored by a 3rd party party app along with app settings are included with the iPad's backup along with other data.
    If you are syncing your iPad direct with iTunes on your computer via USB, the iPad's backup is updated as the first step during the iTunes sync process.
    The first time you connect a new iPad or iOS device to iTunes that is used to sync with another iOS device, you are prompted to transfer the backup for the other iOS device to the new device. This is followed by a sync to transfer the same content from your computer that is on the old iPad to the new iPad such as music, movies, tv shows, 3rd party apps, photos, audio and print books, etc.

  • Do I need to worry about these event handlers in a grid from a memory leak perspective?

    I'm pretty new to Flex and coudn't figure out how to add event handlers to inline item renderer components from the containing file script so I attached the listnerers simply as part of the components themselves (eg <mx:Checkbox ... chnage="outerDocument.doSomething(event)"../>):
    <mx:DataGrid id="targetsGrid" width="100%" height="100%" doubleClickEnabled="true" styleName="itemCell"
          headerStyleName="headerRow" dataProvider="{targets}"
          rowHeight="19" fontSize="11" paddingBottom="0" paddingTop="1">
         <mx:columns>
         <mx:DataGridColumn width="78" dataField="@isSelected" headerText="">
         <mx:itemRenderer>
              <mx:Component>
                   <mx:HBox width="100%" height="100%" horizontalAlign="center">
                        <mx:CheckBox id="targetCheckBox" selected="{data.@isSelected == 'true'}"
                             change="outerDocument.checkChangeHandler(event);"/>
                        <mx:Image horizontalAlign="center" toolTip="Delete" source="@Embed('/assets/icons/delete.png')" useHandCursor="true" buttonMode="true"
                             click="outerDocument.deleteHandler(event);"/>
                        <mx:Image id="editButton" horizontalAlign="center" toolTip="Edit" source="@Embed('/assets/icons/edit-icon.png')" useHandCursor="true" buttonMode="true"
                             click="outerDocument.editHandler(event);"/>
                   </mx:HBox>
              </mx:Component>
         </mx:itemRenderer>
         </mx:DataGridColumn>
              <mx:DataGridColumn id="Name" dataField="@collectionDesc" headerText="Name" itemRenderer="com.foobar.integrated.media.ui.component.CellStyleForTargetName"/>
              <mx:DataGridColumn id="Created" width="140" dataField="@createDateTime" headerText="Created"  labelFunction="UiHelper.gridDateFormat" />
         </mx:columns>
    </mx:DataGrid>
    This grid is part of a view that will get destroyed and recreated potentially many times during a user's session within the application (there's a large dynamic nature to the app and views are created at run-time.) By destroyed I mean that the view that holds the above datagrid will no longer be referenced under certain circumstances and an entire new view object is created (meaning the old datagrid is no longer refernced and a new one is created.)
    I heard you should clean up event handlers when they are no longer used, and I know at what point the view is destroyed, but I don't know how to clean up the event handlers added to the item renderer components? Is it something that the Flex garbage collector will handle efficiently?
    Also, on a somewhat related note, how could I push the item renderer to an external component since in my event handlers for the item renderer buttons I need a reference to the datagrid.selectedIndex which, as an external item renderer I wouldn't have access to this containing grid?

    No. You don't need explicit cleanup in this case: if your outerDocument is going away, you have nothing to worry about. The event handler leak can happen in sort of the reverse situation: suppose you have a long-lived MyView that contains a custom DataGrid like the one below. Now suppose that MyView frequently destroys and re-creates the grid. And suppose that on its creationComplete event, the grid registers a listener for outerDocument's (MyView's) enterFrame Event. Unless you explicitly remove this listener, MyView will still have a reference to it even after the grid that registered the listener is destroyed (and garbage collected).
    This is a pretty contrived example, but it sort of illustrates the potential for leaks: a certain component is elligible for garbage collection, but some longer-lived component holds a reference to it (or part of it, such as a listener function). If the longer-lived component is elligible for GC as well, you don't really need to worry about proper cleanup. That's what you're paying the GC processor cycles for.

    Try a hard reset. ( holding Power til it restarts)
    Once to your desktop. Click the Apple icon >> About this mac >> More info>> Storage
    Once you see what you have the most of. Try to see what you can delete.
    Open up any folder>>all files>> or buy an external to store more data.
    Once deleting make sure you empty your trash.
    If you are new and its a new computer, you might need to bring it to a store for further assistence.

  • Worried about upgrading from 10.2.8 to Tiger

    I know, everyone tells me I should upgrad to Tiger. I've been using 10.2.8 for some time now on my iMac FP and I got a lot of applications on it. My thinking is "If it aint broke, don't fix it" but I am finding that new stuff like the newest Java and iLife, etc., don't run on 10.2.8.
    So, can everyone put my worries to rest? I guess I want to do the "upgrade" so I don't lose my existing apps. I have two large firewire drives. If I back everything up to there, is that a good idea? Or, since I'm doing an update, I don't have to worry about that? When you upgrade, what happens to all the apps you've installed in the "Application" folder? Are they still there? I would think that things like "Terminal" and other OSX apps would be replaced.
    My internal drive is 80G and I'm using about 33G of that. I have one FW external drive that has 140G available. Should I "clone" my 33G internal to it, then do a clean install. If I do that, how do I get my stuff back over from the clone to the newly formatted 80G internal with Tiger on it.
    I'm sorry for all the questions, but its a big step for me to take. Is upgrading just as good as doing a clean install?
    More questions, I know.
    Well, I'll stop now.
    Thanks in advance,
    Alfredo

    If we go right back to the original Question we can assume that you are concerned about loss of data and the possibilty that a new or upgraded os will not operate to your satisfaction.
    Point 1. regardless of what you do relating to the os you must have a backup?
    Point 2. If you do not have a backup then make one. This is without question the most important fact of all time regarding data on a computer regardless of what system amd which os you run.
    Point 3. all advice given by others is good, the choice of which app to use regarding a backup is often personal as many apps do the job as required.
    Point 4. If a backup exists then you already have your insurance. Making changes to your os can be done without worry as this is the primary reason that backup apps exist. If we ever take the time to read the "read me files"
    All of them state that we should make a backup before installing new data!
    Point 5. I wish you a happy Christmas and wish all a happy mac in the new year.
    regards
