Worried About  New 13inch Macbook Pro

Hi guys,
just upgraded to a MBP from the white macbook. Till now I am loving it but I am worried about two things.
The battery of my new model (3 days old) is no where close to the claimed 8hrs. While I understand that 8hrs is just a claim and mostly in standby mode but I am still worried about my battery.
My iSat pro shows its health 97% (yesterday it was 96) on 3 charge cycles.
Also I get an estimate of 3 - 4 hrs battery time when I browsing on Safari, using iTunes, and full brightness and keyboard lit. Is that normal? My white macbook use to give me the same charge in good old days.
Have I got a bad battery?
I am new to the glass mousepad and taken aback by its slow response. I dont know if its a snow leopard bug or my trackpad is faulty. Sometimes double and right clicking doesnt happen and i have to tap hard.
Also another peculiar problem is that if I have to shut a window or a tab in safari, sometimes when I click on the "X" nothing happens. I have to try it a couple of times or minimise it and then shut it. Its quite irritating. Can some one pls tell me why this problem is arising?
Thanks

Hi Tanya,
My iSat pro shows its health 97% (yesterday it was 96) on 3 charge cycles.
Anything above 95% is quite fine for a new battery. This number will go up, down, sideways, etc. all the time. It is not a very accurate measurement of battery condition. If you have not yet calibrated your battery do that and see what it says.
The full brightness on your display and keyboard are what is killing your battery life. The display is the single largest power draw on a notebook computer (by far!!). If you dim it down to 50% of lower you should see at least an hour or 1.5 hours added to your time estimate.
As for the trackpad, I think something is wrong. Have you adjusted the tracking speed and double click speed in System Preferences? My Late 2008 trackpad is speedy and responsive. I never even click it; I just use tap to click.

Is the 2.53Ghz New 13inch macbook pro powerful enough for basic photo/video editing ?
    Sincerely

No problem paulcurtis. Typical story, if I'd waited a couple of weeks or a month, I could have gotten for 300 less a refurbed 2.53 with the discreet video card with 512 MB of vid ram. As it is, I have a discreet card with 256.
All the MBP from late 2008 onward have a Nivdia 9400 Video chip on-board, meaning integrated with the motherboard. These cards share 256MB of ram with system ram. The extra discreet card is a Nivdia 9600 card. My model came with 256MB of its own dedicated ram. So when I'm on battery, I use the 9400 because it uses less electricity. When plugged in I use the 9600 with 256 as it provides significantly better performance. I believe that when Snowbird comes out, that apps written for it, especially creative apps, such as Photoshop, Final Cut Express, Aperture or Lightroom, or going to put more of the processing onto the video card. In that case the more ram on the video card the better.
If I was buying today, I would get a refurbed 2.53 or 2.66 with the 512 MB version of the card. Now you can get those same models for the price I paid for my 2.4. they also come with more Ram 4GB and more onboard cache 6MB as opposed to 3. The cache is the fastest memory on the system and like ram, the more the merrier. Don't get me wrong, I love this Macbook and don't regret the purchase at all. In fact it's become my main computer now. but that's the way of computer world.
The refurbed macs are a real deal, in my view. And if you are going to do any kind of Photoshop or use so-called "Pro" apps beyond iLife, the dedicated graphics card will be a plus. Likewise for playing games.
    Hope that helps.

  • New 13inch Macbook Pro wobbly on surfaces

Ok I bought a 13inch Macbook Pro last Monday the 19th. In the few days I've had it I've noticed that it won't sit right on flat surfaces. When closed, its the back right corner that feels like its raised. When opened it feels like its the front left corner. I know I need to go the apple store but for me thats a pretty long drive. Anyone have any experience with this? Is this something where they will just replace it with a new one or are they gonna want to ship this off?

I do not know what Apple will do. Regardless of Apple's action, you need to get the computer to them. Your choices are to visit the Apple store, or call Apple and have them send you a box.

  • Can I play call of duty on my new 13inch macbook pro corei7?

I bought my new macbook pro 13inch corei7 2 month ago.
in "Tech Spec" we see this : " Graphics     :                               Intel HD Graphics 3000 processor with 384MB of DDR3 SDRAM shared with main memory "  and no memory graphics!!  Is it mean that I can`t play video games like fifa games and call of duty?
I`m actually sad right now! I wish I`ll run that games on my laptop....
    Answer me please....

    No.
If you wanted a 3D gamers laptop, you needed a 15"/17" 2.2/2.3 Ghz with the Radeon 6750M in it. (scores 30)
    The 15" 2.0 Ghz scores 18.
Your best option now since you blew your wad on the 13" MacBook Nothing, is to get yourself a PS3 or a Windows 7 64bit 4GB RAM expandable desktop machine and a 3D gamers card.
Were as your Intel HD 3000 scores a measly 11 on the Cinebench scale, you could get a Windows tower and peg it out at up to 90 with the right video card.

The problem for me is that I've read reviews on several of the interfaces on the list I was directed to, where one person had no latency issues, and then somewhere else the poster/reviewer testifies that they were plagued by latency issues.
After forking out the cash for a new Mac and then a couple more for an an interface, that'd be a tough pill to swallow!!
Fortunately, it's not one you have to worry about.
The latency you're talking about is caused by the computer, not the interface:
The interface converts the audio from analog to digital and sends it into the computer. Once in the computer, it gets sent into Garageband (or whatever audio program you're using), and any effects you've selected are applied to it, and then it is sent back out to the interface to be reconverted into an analog signal you can hear.
All the "heavy lifting" occurs in the computer itself, so the source of latency is really the time it takes the computer to process the audio, apply the effects algorithms, and send it back to the interface.
(There is latency in any circuit, but the latency in the interface itself is negligible compared to how long it can be delayed in the computer).
Your new computer is plenty fast (and has enough RAM) to do basic recording without latency.
I'm guessing you won't even have to resort to the kind of "zero latency" local monitoring that Hangtime suggested (i.e. listening to your signal locally, bypassing its journey into your computer, through its algorithms, and back out again). Although as it's true that doing that always provides the least latency of all, if that's an important safety net for you, you might want to get an interface with that feature -  a number of them now offer it.
But I would guess that if you plug any contemporary interface into your computer, and plug your guitar into it, you shouldn't be bothered by latency.
FWIW - a good online source for gear is Sweetwater. Here's their audio interface page for Firewire:
    http://www.sweetwater.com/c683--FireWire_Audio_Interfaces
    ... and for USB:
    http://www.sweetwater.com/c695--USB_Audio_Interfaces
Firewire interfaces tend to be higher end than USB, but cost a little more as well.
    Good luck!

  • How well does Aperture 2.0 run on the new 13" Macbook Pro?

    Hi,
I'm seriously considering buying a new mac in the next week or so. I was just wondering if any of you had any advice as to whether the new 13" Macbook Pro is good enough to run Apple's Aperture 2.0, quite well? I'm not worried about the screen size as I will mostly be working from home, but the mobility would be a huge advantage in the field.
    Thank-you,
    Rob

Mac is the future, for me! wrote:

The 13" MBP is relatively a lower end box for running a VERY hardware-hungry application. There are folks who consider strong Mac Pros marginal yet at the same time there are folks who find Macbooks even weaker than the 13" MBP "strong enough," so "quite well" unfortunately is in the eyes of the beholder. IMO IF one is aware of and accepts the limitations a 13" MBP certainly "works."
RAM fortunately can go to 8GB, a very big deal; however among Macs the 13" box has minimum-in-class graphics, no EC/34 slot forever preventing eSATA and/or SSD utility, and has a glossy-only display.
I'm not worried about the screen size as I will mostly be working from home, but the mobility would be a huge advantage in the field.
Working from home you will presumably be driving a secondary display, further taxing the weaker graphics of the 13" size.
Personally I don't find the ~1 pound saving over the 15" or the ~2 pound saving over the 17" to be "a huge advantage in the field." IMO for graphics, especially photos, the loss of screen real estate and pixels in the 13" size is a huge disadvantage in the field. The pound or two of weight IMO is much, much less relevant than the huge benefits of extra pixels and screen real estate in larger sizes.

  • How do I perform a "Suite Product Activation" so that Acrobat will start working on my new Retina MacBook Pro?

How do I perform a "Suite Product Activation" so that Acrobat will start working on my new Retina MacBook Pro?
Like others, I have recently upgraded my MacBook Pro to the next generation and migrated all my information from old to new. Everything works seamlessly EXCEPT Acrobat. Photoshop, Indesign, Bridge and Lightroom all seem functional. Acrobat hangs with an error message "Suite Product Activation Needed. Acrobat was installed as part of a suite. To enable Acrobat, please start another element of the suite (such as Photoshop)." Needless to say, starting another element of the suite has NO impact on Acrobat.
This has to be a common problem. Now that Apple has made it really easy to migrate information from old to new machines, it has to come up all the time. What surprises me greatly is that I can't find any coherent answer in these forums.
So how do I get Acrobat running again?

    Hi Anubha,
I do not understand what you said below.
I am running Adobe Acrobat Pro Version 9.5.5. I do not remember whether it came with Photoshop or InDesign.
When I open Photoshop, it opens without my having to follow any instructions to activate the software. As a matter of fact, I cannot find my Photoshop serial number anywhere in the Photoshop program itself. I do know it from my profile at Adobe.com. Are you suggesting I deactivate Photoshop on the new computer and then reactivate it using my serial number? Will it reactivate?
    When you say
"/Library/Application Support/Adobe" at the root level of the startup disk (not the Library folder inside a user's Home folder)
what do you mean? I do not have a startup disk. I have the original installation disk but that version of Photoshop has been updated a few times.
After staring at your instructions for a while, I realized that you might be talking about the Library/Application Support folders resident on my Macintosh HD, although why you called it a startup disk is unclear to me. IAC, I went into those folders and duly moved the three folders into a new folder I called “Acrob1” and restarted Adobe Acrobat 9 and got the following error message: “AMT Subsystem Failure  The licensing subsystem has failed catastrophically. You must reinstall of call customer support.” with a small (6).
By undoing my actions I am back to the staus quo ante.
    Now what?
    Regards, Robert

  • HT3819 I have a new apple MacBook Pro. All my music is on my old computer and on my I-Pod. Can I use home sharing to transfer my music onto my new computer?

I have a new apple MacBook Pro. All my music is on my old computer and my i-pad. What is the easiest way to transfer my music onto my new
    computer?

    apps
If you have an iPod touch or iPhone with iOS 4 or later software, or an iPad, you can use iTunes to transfer files between your computer and an app on your device that supports file sharing.
You might want to do this if, for example, you want to save files you create on your device to your computer, or take files with you so you can use them when you’re away from your computer.
You don’t need to sync your device to transfer files, but your device needs to be connected to your computer.
For information about supported apps, see the documentation for your apps.
    Hide
To transfer files from your iPod touch, iPhone, or iPad to your computer:
Connect your iPod touch, iPhone, or iPad to your computer.
In iTunes, select your device (below Devices), and click the Apps button.
Below File Sharing, from the list on the left, select the app on your device that you want to transfer a file from.
From the list on the right, select the file you want to transfer, and click “Save to.”
In the window that appears, select the destination where you want to save the file, and click Choose.
The file is saved to the selected destination on your computer.
SImport music and video already on your computer
If you have audio or video files on your computer, you can import them into iTunes so that they appear in your iTunes library.
    Hide
Here are ways to add items from your computer to your iTunes library:
Drag a file or folder from the Finder to the iTunes window.
If you add a folder, all the files it contains are added to your library.
In iTunes, choose File > “Add to Library,” locate a file or folder, and then click Choose.
By default, iTunes places a copy of each audio file in the iTunes folder (Home/Music); the original file remains in the current location. For information about adding an alias to the file (instead of creating a copy), see Add items to your library without copying them to your iTunes folder.

  • New 2015 MacBook Pro 13 Iris 6100 - can it run single 5k display?

Hello.  I'm thinking about buying the new 2015 MacBook Pro 13-in with Retina Display with the new Intel Iris 6100 and pairing it with a Dell UP2715K 5k monitor to run 2560x1440 in retina mode.
The specs on the Apple.com website for the new MacBook say the following:
Dual display and video mirroring: Simultaneously supports full native resolution on the built-in display and up to 3840 by 2160 pixels on up to two external displays, both at millions of colors.
Although there's no mention of 5120 by 2880 support it can successfully run two 4k monitors simultaneously, which I would think is more demanding than a single 5k monitor.
    Can anyone offer any insight?
    Thank you.

Allright, it took me some time to figure out why the write and read speeds were lagging compared to numerous speed tests of rMBP 13" of same year and build.
During the setup process, when starting up your new rMBP the first time, you'll be asked whether you want to activate FileVault. I activated it.
As soon as you turn off FileVault and restart your mac and do the speedtest again, it should give better results. As shown in the screenshot you can see that my write and read speeds are now on par with the other speedtests on the internet. Both 1080p50 and 1080p59.94 formats at 12 Bit RGB are now checked.
Turning off FileVault solved this issue.
P.S. the whole thing about the NVMExpress only applies to the early 2015 12" MacBook. http://www.macrumors.com/2015/04/11/nvme-mac-os-x/

  • New Haswell Macbook Pro 15" Sleep/Wake Rebooting fault

Since I got the new Haswell Macbook Pro 15", it has unexpectedly crashed and rebooted continuously. Sometimes it shows the grey reboot message before restarting, other times it freezes and I have to reboot by long holding down the power button.
When it is idle and asleep it still continues to reboot on it's own. Every hour or so it just reboots, gets to the log in screen, goes asleep and reboots again in a little while. The whole cycle takes about an hour, but it is consistently happening.
The report after restarting is saying that it's a Sleep/Wake error, but I'm also concerned as it happens during normal use.
    Anyone else having this problem?

Apple upper level support told me this is a hardware issue and I should return/exchange for another.....
