Worried about updating to 10.4.9
I have upgraded to FCS 2 and it needs QT 7.1.6 to run which need s 10.4.9 I have been reading bad things about the os x update and I am worried that it will conflict with my logic pro and all my external plugins and all my external instruments, ( I have lots ) and the thought of my system going down is a nightmare. I will do a clone just incase.
10.4.9 is generally fine. It's 10.4.10 that I'd be worried about intsalling.
Just make sure you have a bootable cloned backup of your current system that you can fall back to in the event you experience trouble with the update.
Also, make sure you read this before updating:

I am worried about doing the new update after reading all of the issues everyone's having. Has this happened to everyone? I'm not sure if I want to try it or not. My phone is a 3G my husbands is a 3GS. Any thoughts would be appreciated.
I was worried when I went to do it last night myself. I had read all the issues, and had also had some problems with some previous updates. I went for it anyway, and it worked perfectly. I figured I still have my extra year on the aaplecare and if it jacked up my phone I would just stand in line at the apple store for a replacement.

What exactly are you seeing on the phone's screen ? If the iTunes icon and cable then the phone is in recovery mode, in which case it's too late to take a new backup or to copy any content off the phone - you will have to connect the phone to your computer's iTunes and reset it back to factory defaults, after which you can restore to the last backup that you took or just resync your content to it

I rcvd an AppleService email
Due to recent updates we are asking many of our customers to confirm their information this is nothing to worry about. We are making sure we have the correct information on file and that you are the rightful account holder. Failure to comply with this may result in your account being suspended.
Is this real or a scam?If you changed your Apple ID, you will not be able to update any of the content that you used in the past. The worse case scenario here would have been to change the password. Really all you needed to do was go on the Apple site and change the password, unless you provided them with information. This will make it difficult for you to deal with turning off Find My iPhone and other Apple ID related steps. All you really needed to do was delete the email.

I have a new MacBook Pro 17, and I installed all my old PPC programs and currently have no problems running any of them, including Photoshop 7, Illustrator 10, InDesign CS, and MS Office 2004.
However, I have installed precisely NONE of the Apple software updates since getting my computer a week ago, because I'd read about so many people having problems after installing the 10.4.7 update and the QuickTime update. Am I being overly cautious? Should I install any of these updates, or are there specific updates I should avoid?
Thank to anyone who answers!I think you are being very overly cautious....
The updates are desinged to work, work with me and everyone else I know.
Bear in mind that which would you prefer, not updating and have the increased security risks from viruses and hackers.
Or be worried about using the free software that is desinged to protect your shiny new computer?
I'm not being overly cautious, myself. I install most updates within a few hours after they come out. I'm just providing information for people who do worry.
But do be aware that once in a rare while a Mac OS update has had a horrendous problem (there was a particularly bad one about a year - maybe longer - ago that had to be withdrawn and then re-released), and it's a good idea to be backed up so you can back out of it, in that case.
It's always a good idea to be backed up, regardless - unless you don't have anything on your computer that you care about losing.
Come on, just intsall them. besides you can sit on Apple if the update buggers up your comp, (which it won't)
Again, it has happened, and it could again. It's very rare - I agree it's not something to be overly concerned about. Yes, don't worry too much, but also, yes, do back up at least the files you can't afford to lose in case the most unlikely - but possible - thing does happen, and an update causes problems on your Mac. (Keep in mind also that, while it's very rare for a Mac OS update in itself to seriously mess up your Mac, there are plenty of situations where preexisting problems in your installation can be compounded by a major update, making your Mac unusable. Again, backups are the key to this not causing data loss.) -
Last time I updated pages I lost features I liked and was unable to open some pages files. Now I see the features I liked are back but I have a lot more files to worry about. Will I be able to open files created in 5.2 if I upgrade to 5.5.3?
Within reason, Pages v5.2 documents are forwards compatible with Pages v5.5.3. Apple introduced the single file format document as a default with Pages v5.5.3 which is not backwards compatible with Pages v5 on Mavericks.
However, they also provided a File > Advanced > Change File Type > {Single File, Package} menu that allows you to change the current Pages v5.5.3 document into the backwards compatible Package type document. You would follow this transformation with a File > Save operation to complete it. -
Ive just updated my version of itunes and now it wont load the itunes store? Anyone know why? Worried about losing my library if i start trying to download again.

I have just purchased a new ipad2 to replace my old ipad. How do i sync all the data in my apps I am worried about losing my data?
iPad settings and data created and stored by a 3rd party party app along with app settings are included with the iPad's backup along with other data.
If you are syncing your iPad direct with iTunes on your computer via USB, the iPad's backup is updated as the first step during the iTunes sync process.
The first time you connect a new iPad or iOS device to iTunes that is used to sync with another iOS device, you are prompted to transfer the backup for the other iOS device to the new device. This is followed by a sync to transfer the same content from your computer that is on the old iPad to the new iPad such as music, movies, tv shows, 3rd party apps, photos, audio and print books, etc. -
Worried about upgrading from 10.2.8 to Tiger
I know, everyone tells me I should upgrad to Tiger. I've been using 10.2.8 for some time now on my iMac FP and I got a lot of applications on it. My thinking is "If it aint broke, don't fix it" but I am finding that new stuff like the newest Java and iLife, etc., don't run on 10.2.8.
So, can everyone put my worries to rest? I guess I want to do the "upgrade" so I don't lose my existing apps. I have two large firewire drives. If I back everything up to there, is that a good idea? Or, since I'm doing an update, I don't have to worry about that? When you upgrade, what happens to all the apps you've installed in the "Application" folder? Are they still there? I would think that things like "Terminal" and other OSX apps would be replaced.
My internal drive is 80G and I'm using about 33G of that. I have one FW external drive that has 140G available. Should I "clone" my 33G internal to it, then do a clean install. If I do that, how do I get my stuff back over from the clone to the newly formatted 80G internal with Tiger on it.
I'm sorry for all the questions, but its a big step for me to take. Is upgrading just as good as doing a clean install?
More questions, I know.
Well, I'll stop now.
Thanks in advance,
AlfredoIf we go right back to the original Question we can assume that you are concerned about loss of data and the possibilty that a new or upgraded os will not operate to your satisfaction.
Point 1. regardless of what you do relating to the os you must have a backup?
Point 2. If you do not have a backup then make one. This is without question the most important fact of all time regarding data on a computer regardless of what system amd which os you run.
Point 3. all advice given by others is good, the choice of which app to use regarding a backup is often personal as many apps do the job as required.
Point 4. If a backup exists then you already have your insurance. Making changes to your os can be done without worry as this is the primary reason that backup apps exist. If we ever take the time to read the "read me files"
All of them state that we should make a backup before installing new data!
Point 5. I wish you a happy Christmas and wish all a happy mac in the new year.

my wife andI are thinking about getting match so that all of our music is in one place. However, we are currently have different itunes accounts and we are worried about losing the different apps that we have accumulated over time, also she has more storage than I do and we are a little worried about that. Does anybody have any ideas.
You won't lose any apps but one of you will lose the ability to update apps on the device.
For you to share iTunes Match all devices must be signed into the same iTunes Store Apple ID that was used to purchase the service. This means any Apps that were purchased with the other Apple ID cannot be updated on the device as a device can only be associated with one Apple ID every 90 days.
I know it's not what you want to hear, but my suggestion is to simply stay with the system you have. It will cause you less headaches. -
I was in the middle of the iOS 8 update and tried to turn my phone off (yes, I realize this was dumb) But what happened was it tried to reset. Now, my iphone 4s has the connect to itunes screen. I have tried to reset, recover, etc but I keep getting and error -51 message. Any ideas how I can get my phone working again? I am not worried about saving any info just having a phone to use!
Try a Hard Reset.....
Press and hold the Wake / Sleep button AND the Home button at the same time, keep them both pressed until the Apple Logo appears on the screen, it can take 10 or more seconds. Ignore the swipe to turn off message. -
Dump Analysis: High ITAB-name-numbers - s.th. to worry about?
Hi Folks,
I'm currently involved with a project implementing SAP CRM-Service and while analysing some dumps for error TSV_TNEW_OCCURS_NO_ROLL_MEMORY I noticed that the number of lines in the internal tables wasn't all that high but that the internally assigned numbers for the itab-names where a lot higher than anything I have seen so far. I'm therefore now wondering if this is something to worry about or if this "normal" for a CRM-Service system.

I'm used to seeing eg. IT_123 but not these 9 digits long numbers. As the routine this abended in is called from one of our custom-programs I'm just a bit concerned that some internal tables might not be properly cleared/refreshed/freed after usage.
Thanks for any feedback you have!

Baerbel
P.S.: I'm sorry for not participating more in the forums but work just keeps interfering!Hi Samuel,
thanks for your quick reply!
To answer your question, I_IBINWA_REC is just a workarea not an internal table. And all the tables I see in the dump-information don't have many entries, they seem all to be in the 1 or at most 2-digit range. This low number of entries compared to the high number of itab-names is what actually had me worried. Something has to be filling up the available memory and I'd like to pinpoint what it is.
It is possible that the program got squeezed from all sides as it abended during conversion activity with lots of activity in the system.
I am glad to read, though, that these high itab-numbers are seen elsewhere as well!
Cheers

I purchased 2 iPhone 5's the first day they came out. Black 64gb for myself and white 32gb for my wife. She is having somewhat the same issues as you have. Wifi is weak and keeps dropping the signal, and also her phone almost never has LTE. And we are in a very strong Verizon LTE area in north Los Angeles county. My phone has never had any signal issues, wifi or LTE. I have been researching the issue to no avail. I though maybe the white with the brushed alluminum may cause signal issues, but haven't found anything on that and posts about the black one haven't problems blew that theory up.
I have also changed the SIM card and the phone itself and still the same problem. I saw a post about someone getting their phone swapped out and the apple rep told him not to restore the phone, but to just set it up as new. I have yet to try it, gonna try this weekend.. But it makes sense! I, like you have 6 apple devices (2 iPhone 5's, 2 iPhone 4's apple tv3, and the ipad3) and have no issues running all my devices via router.
So I am thinking about the history of the restores and backups and my wife is the only one that went from the 4 to the 5.. Every other device was setup as new. So my theory is that he iphone 5 has issues when you restore from previous backups.. Maybe something a little different from the backups of the previous models create issues in the iPhone 5's?
Like I said, I'm going to give it a shot this weekend and see what happens. If you get a chance to try this before, please let me know if it works and if I try before you I will update you.
Good luck and hopefully we can get these wonderful phones working like they should!

Worried about need to constantly repair disk permissions
Here is my analysis and conclusions as to why I need to constantly repair disk permissions:
I recently got the top-o'-the-line iMac (see info below) which shipped with Lion but since I wanted Snow Leopard (just because I have a few PowerPC games that I can't live without) I reformatted the hard drive - into 1 partition from the 2 that Lion had - and installed Snow Leopard and went back to business as usual....only with one **** great and fast computer. BTW, as far as I know this computer is exactly the same computer that shipped with Snow Leopard prior to Lion's introduction. I swore that I would never get another desktop computer because this one would last me forever. My only hesitation now is because the need to constantly repair permissions means something is not right. On the one hand I could just keep on repairing (daily?) the permissions for the next 20 years, or.... what? Is it possible (or should I be asking Apple itself instead of in this forum) that there is some other difference between the Snow Leopard and the Lion versions of this iMac - is this what "firmware" is all about? - that produces this constant need to repair permissions? If that's the case, would Apple give me a Snow Leopard-friendly logic board (and/or install the correct firmware) in exchange for the Lion logic board - or am I just going to have to live with having to perform this permissions-update function? Or is having to repair disk permissions not a big deal or something worrying about? Any ideas would be appreciated - thanks!
