Worried: Found my retina MacBook running super-hot after being in my bag for hours

Hi all
Just a bit worried about my new rMBP (2.6GHz, 16GB RAM). I put it to sleep by closing the lid at work, then putting it into a very well insulated padded sleeve, in my bag. I then went to the doctor and came back 2 hours later.
I opened by bag, first I found it strange that my whole bag was really hot! like it had been next to a radiator.
Then I realized it was my MacBook. I opened up the sleeve and it was running full throttle, the fans going like crazy, and the whole thing was so hot I could barely touch it. There was a 'warm' smell, I'm hoping not burning as such, but it had a distinct hot smell to it. Unsurprisingly the screen was blank (it had crashed or something) as the whole thing was clearly suffocating to death. I turned the whole thing off manually and waited for it to cool.
I've got it up and running again, but I'm a bit worried that I've damaged the processor or similar. I've no idea why it woke itself from sleep and why it was running so heavily. I can't imagine it's good for the machine to be running so hot in my bag with no ventilation whatsoever.
I might have to resort to shutting the machine down fully before packing away now, which isn't very convenient, but seeing as there is no sleep LED indicator on the new rMBP, it's not possible to see whether the machine is properly shut down.
Has anyone else experienced this? Is my rMPB defective or might I have damaged my machine?
Thanks
K

sanjampet's advice is entirely correct.
Here's what happens with overheated machines like yours; monitoring can't hurt. Load a free program like iStat to keep track of the health of your fans. Any damage, if any, would be more long-term, resulting from weakened solder. It's impossible to know what might happen with this computer, since it's a first generation MBPr.
My immediate question is this: what caused your machine to switch on at full throttle? If it happened once, there's a good chance it could again.

  • Black Macbook runs very hot after installing MS Office 11.5.7 update

I don't know if the two events are causally related, but my black Santa Rosa Macbook is now running scorchingly hot (74 - 85 degrees C) after I installed the MS Office 11.5.7 update tonight. Won't cool down. When turned off for twenty minutes, then re-booted, it begins to run very hot again within a minute or two, despite SMC fan control being on.
Activity monitor says a kernel task at the root level is using 160.46 gigs of real memory and 1.24 gigs of virtual memory; something called "mds" also at root is eating 43 megs of real memory and 733 megs of virtual; a "database daemon" under my user name uses only 23 megs of real memory but over a gig of virtual, and "netupdateagent" which may or may not have something to do with Intego updates uses a whopping 2.9 gigs of virtual but only 6.9 of real memory.

My MacBook Pro is running very hot after lion install.  Are there any hardware changes that will help? What can I do to get it back to normal?

I get the impression that most of the users on older hardware experiences similar temperature issues on Lion for a long time now. Awaiting for confirmation from the original poster.
In the meantime I'm just cautious with regards to pushing the machine to such extreme temps, since something tells me such behaviour which includes monitor flickering and the likes is nothing but abnormal for any type of use...
Any clues if 10.7.5 does anything on this? If not I'm afraid i see myself going back to SL for good...

    What about this?
Good brand and a little cheaper:

Would it be worth the $80 or should I just put it toward a used MBP?

    Hello
    I have an emergecy question
Is there any problem running again  "bdls" after being disconnected while running it (my network connecton to laptop got broken)
    Thank you in advance

    Hi,
Be sure that it does not continue to run. If it was really interrupted, yes, you must run it again. Otherwise you would have a lot of inconsistancies.

  • MacBook runs extremely hot when the battery is in!

To start off... I'm a quite savvy user. I've built PC desktops, I repair computers for friends and family, and I'm interning at an Apple Authorized Service Provider. However, I'm having an issue that is totally stumping me. I recently took my MacBook apart to clean it and apply some Arctic Silver 5 to the CPU and Northbridge. All went well, and without the battery in, my CPU temperature maxes out at 155 Fahrenheit (versus the previous max of 185). When I put the battery in (with CPU load at 100%), the CPU temperature jumps from between 145-155 to 200 very quickly. I checked the connection of the battery cable to the logic board, as well as all the other cables on the easily accessible side of the logic board. I triple checked all the cable connections on the underside of the logic board since I didn't want to have to take it out again. Any ideas as to why my system runs so hot with the battery in?

Hmm, I never knew that, and thanks for the quick reply! I guess I'll be taking the logic board back out and checking the heatsink and thermal paste application again. It was interesting, one of the screws in my heatsink was totally smooth; never threaded in the factory. I had to order a whole new set of heatsink screws. Perhaps the threading on the logic board itself is off and not letting the heatsink sit flush? That screw did give me some difficulty getting in.

  • Why is my Macbook running so hot?

I have a 2.16 GHz Core 2 Duo Macbook from late 2007, recently replaced the hard drive with a 250GB, upgraded to 10.6.8, and installed 4Gb RAM.  Before all of the upgrades and still now, it constantly runs very hot.  I keep it on a hard flat desktop surface and even when I just have iTunes running and a browser open to NYTimes or something with no running flash or video, it runs so hot the fan is on nearly constantly.  I bought a laptop fan but it doesn't seem to help.  CPU is generally 140 degrees F or higher.
This has only started in the last 6-9 months; up until then everything was fine and running cool, or at least if not cool then the fan wasn't coming on so frequently.  What could be going on?

The first thing I would look at is Activity Monitor (Utilities folder)....select the CPU tab and from the drop down menu at the top of that window select 'All Processes' and see if something is using an inordinate amount of  CPU cycles...double or triple digit percents....
    ....also try reseting the SMC...

  • Why is my macbook running so hot and what to do about it?

My macbook is running pretty hot. I'm thinking this is ultimately bad for it. Is it worthwhile to buy one of those cooling pads? I've heard they really don't work that well. Any solutions? Or suggestions? I know I could just elevate it which I've done but if I have to type it makes it kind of difficult.
    Thanks

  • Macbook running like garbage after 10.10.3 update

So I have been running Yosemite on my 13inch MacBook from 2008 with no issue
until I did the recent 10.10.3 update two days ago. Since the update, my laptop
is not functioning properly and is running incredibly slow. It takes 20x longer
to load up after being shut off and safari will not open. After the update it
took almost 4 hours for the mouse spinning wheel to stop spinning. I have tried
all posted suggestions including running disk utility and ETRECHECK. I tried resetting
the PRAM, running in safemode and deleting the "com.Apple.Plist" document from my
    computer. Nothing has worked.
I even booked an Apple genius appointment and drove 60 minutes to the store.
The Staff was not helpful what so ever and there only suggestion was to buy a
new Macbook. My laptop worked flawlessly prior to the update and is now running
like complete garage. I am so mad right now. Any help would be appreciated.
Just ran Etrecheck prior to posting this and it states: Macintosh HD (disk0s2) / :499.25 GB (445.68 Free) - 21 errors
I updated my harddrive to a 500GB unit and my ram to 8gb about 1 1/2 years ago. I have had no issues until now

Make a backup first. You should have done that before upgrading. Repair the hard drive, which may be failing, by restarting into your recovery partition and running Disk Utility. Reset the SMC Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC) on your Mac - Apple Support Do the reset two or three times.

  • ITunes running super slow after latest update, today.

I just updated my software on iTunes and suddenly it's running super slooooooow!
It takes about 2 to 4 minutes to open.
New computer. Running Windows 7. It's not my computer. I promise.
iTunes was super fast until I just updated the software, this morning.
Plus, now it doesn't recognize my iPhone 4.
All of other programs are still running at lightening speed.
So, any suggestions? I'm expecting my new iPhone 4s, today and really don't want to have any issues going in.
    This is very frustrating!
    Thanks!

    Close your iTunes,
    Go to command Prompt -
(Win 7/Vista) - START/ALL PROGRAMS/ACCESSORIES, right mouse click "Command Prompt", choose "Run as Administrator".
    (Win XP SP2 & above) - START/ALL PROGRAMS/ACCESSORIES/Command Prompt
In the "Command Prompt" screen, type in
    netsh winsock reset
    Hit "ENTER" key
    Restart your computer.
If you do get a prompt after restart windows to remap LSP, just click NO.
Now launch your iTunes and see if it is working now.
If you are still having these type of problems after trying the winsock reset, refer to this article to identify which software in your system is inserting LSP:
