Worries about adding Essentials Roles to 2012 STD

Hello!<o:p></o:p>
This is my first real? Here so I would like to just say, with all that I have read, learned from this forum it has been a big help in the past, I’m
sure it will continue to be in the future, with that said.<o:p></o:p>
When I first started at my place of employment they had 3 small desktop servers running. All (3) were using server 2003 but not one of the OS were
activated. They were still working in a workgroup environment not a domain.  There were many more problems with the servers and network alike, but that would take too much time to mention. So to get to the point, I installed a new HP ProLiant DL320e Gen
8 server for them. Xeon® CPU E3-1270 v2 @ 3.50GHz, 16Gb 1600 Ram (4), 1Tb Sata HDD’s in Raid (0), Windows Server 2012 R@ STD. Do to the fact they had (40) WS and 50 users and growing. I installed server 2012 STD as the OS. I would have liked to go with Essentials
though. We still have one of the other servers running but at this point it still has server 2003 on it, and it used only for our Time clock software (Time Force II) do to the fact that software can't be installed on the Domain Controller. It's A nice server
though it has 16 GB, of ram and a Xeon E3-1220 v2 3.10GHZ CPU. So I have planes for it in the near future. At this point I'm thinking of making it the backup DC and E-mail exchange. <o:p></o:p>
To get to my question after giving you some back ground just in case it's needed. The main DC server is running 2012 STD and is fully active and operational
at this time. I would like to take advantage of some of the features of the essentials Role. Can I install the Essentials Role on an active STD server without affecting the server, settings and network as it is now?  I do believe with the essentials role
you can have another DC in the forest. , But not with a true Essentials server. So will going into (Add Roles and Features) and then adding the Essentials role work for me without effecting the domain and users and work files at it is now?<o:p></o:p>
Also I would like to get your opinion on the idea of using the 2nd server for a backup DC and Email exchange server. I would have to run the Time Force II software on
a Virtual Machine since that software can’t be installed on a DC. But that is fine with me I could use the VM for other things as well. ?
J<o:p></o:p>
Sorry I will make my question shorter in the future just felt I should put some background in there since it’s my first post as a newbie.<o:p></o:p>

Hi,
àI installed server 2012 STD as the OS. I would have liked to go with Essentials though.
Would you please let me confirm whether it’s a Windows Server 2012 or a Windows Server 2012 R2?
The Windows Server Essentials Experience role is available in Windows Server 2012 R2 Standard and Windows Server 2012 R2 Datacenter.
For installing Windows Server Essentials Experience role in a Windows Server 2012 R2 Standard in an Existing Active Directory Environment, please refer to following article and
check if can help you.

  • Cannot have multiple domain controllers with Essentials role in 2012 R2 Standard/Datacenter

Microsoft's Technet post on deploying Essentials Role in an existing AD environment states the following:
"The online service integration features only work when the server is a domain controller. Also, integration cannot be initiated if there are multiple domain controllers in the environment. The product team is investigating possible solutions."
    http://blogs.technet.com/b/sbs/archive/2013/10/28/enabling-multiple-instances-of-windows-server-essentials-experience-in-your-environment.aspx
Microsoft Essentials Role product team, can you let us know when this will be fixed? I will not be installing Essentials as a Role if I cannot have multiple domain controllers.
As soon as I add another domain controller the Essentials role no longer functions as designed.
This is quite an oversight by your team. Can we have an ETA for a fix to this please?
Here are more with the same issue:

Hi. We can't give ETA. Most user there that help does not work for Microsoft. (and if a Microsoft's employee help, then it's on it's free time at home or during break)
Thus, for that reason, please call the support to get a good answer on the ETA is it's planned or not. Be advised that the essential's version replaced the SBS, thus it target small office, such limitation can stay for a long time IMO.

  • Windows 2012 R2 / Windows Essentials Role. How to keep from Changing DNS.

So I have asked this question in the windows 2012 Server board and was directed to try it here in the essentials.
that existing thread is here >>
    http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/11cfbc1b-0001-42d6-85c1-304d1e450679/windows-2012-r2-windows-essentials-role-how-to-keep-from-changing-dns?forum=winserver8gen
    now to the question
Ok so I will describe my problem as best as I can.
I have 2 Servers Both 2012 R2 Standard 1 is Primary Domain controller and one is the Secondary Domain controller. I had everything set up on the domain and the Primary Domain controller was set up as the DNS on ALL clients (Static).
Recently I set up the secondary domain controller with Essentials. All went well I added all the clients to connect with Essentials. a few days went by and now all of a sudden all the Static DNS's are all changed to the Essentials box.
This Really wouldn't be a problem to me except the performance level of that DNS is EXTREAMLY slow. I run to all clients and change the static back and everything works great. then a little while goes by and all DNS's are again to the Essentials box.
SO my question would be. Is there any way to configure the Essentials box to stop redirecting the DNS to itself and keep the Primary domain controller as the DNS

    Hi Curtis_bob,
I noticed that Olaf had provided
KB2862551 in the old thread. Just check if Olaf’s suggestion can help you to solve this issue.
If this issue still exists, would you please let me confirm whether has also installed DNS server role on the
Windows Server 2012 R2 Standard (with Windows Server Essentials Experience role)?
If any update, please feel free to let us know.

    Justin Gu

  • Server 2012 R2 Essentials Role: How to change the port numbers?

    Hi All,
I've installed Server 2012 R2 on a Hyper-V guest, and then installed the Essentials Role on it. I've setup the role, and can access the dashboard. However the client I have has only one static IP - and Exchange/IIS running on the Hyper-V host. So the normal
ports for Access Anywhere won't work. I'd like to have the Access Anywhere respond on a different port - say 9999 for example. Then I can configure port forwarding on the router to pass it through, and have it working correctly as an SBS replacement. I messed
around with the bindings in IIS, but that didn't really solve the problem. I thought that would be it - but I suppose it's possible the service isn't meant to run on another port?
Has anyone had any luck in changing Access Anywhere to respond on a different port?
    Thanks!

    Hi,
Based on your description, I understand that you want to change the default port of Anywhere Access. Please
refer to following thread and check if can help you.

If anything I misunderstand or any update, please don’t hesitate to let me know.
    Hope this helps.

  • Running Server 2012 Essentials Edition without Essentials Role?

We have been running into Line of Business (LOB) applications in the small business sector showing incompatibilities with the Essentials Role, where as the LOB developer requires to run a 10 user office on Standard Edition without Essentials Experience turned.
There are now a number of LOBs that I know of for what I can tell, use legacy database engines, that have made this their system requirement.
Is it possible to turn off the Essentials Role inside the Essentials Edition and still run other roles like DC, DHCP etc.?
    thanks, Volker
    Volker

No real clue if it will break if you remove the role.  If I had to guess I would say yes.  But I am not sure how removing the role will fix the LOB unless perhaps it is web based and needs 443.
Thank you for your reply, but if you look  it is possible to remove the Essentials Role in the Essentials Version, my question was what does that do? Does
it become a Standard Version with up to 75 CALs, just no Essentials (SBS) tools?
Just curious, you think that would be legit? Turn a 400$ product into an 800$ product by uninstalling the role?

  • Server 2012 std not able to see Domain, DC and DNS on Win SBS 2008 std Domain

    Hi There
I have a HP ML 110 G5 SBS 2008 std server as my DC on my network. I recently added a HP Microserver running Server 2012 std (with no roles or features installed) to act solely as a file server for a 3rd party program as the program was not running efficiently
    on the main server.
The problem I am having now is that the 2012 server keeps falling off the domain and cannot contact DNS server. I have also had to re-enable remote desktop several times. It also shows the 2012 Server as being on a private firewall profile and not on the
domain firewall profile but I suspect that this is part of the same problem.
the resulting problem that this is causing is that the local machines that need to contact an SQL database on the 2012 fileserver intermittently either time out or are very slow to connect.
    So far I have tried:
Switching from Static IP to DHCP.
Re-adding the server to the domain.
Stopping and restarting DNS services on the DC.
Checking physical Network connections and routing.
Putting the 2012 server into the same Organizational Unit as the 2008 DC.
Has anyone else encountered this problem when adding a 2012 server to a 2008 domain?  I have a feeling that the solution is probably something simple that I've overlooked, but I can't think what.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Regards
    Russ

  • WSUS 3.2 on Server 2008 R2 with SQL 2012 STD

    Hi
I have a Windows 2008 Server R2 with SQL server 2012 STD on it, his is a VM(hyper v) and not connected to the internet machine.
I want to install the WSUS Role on it an it fails every time..
When installing the Role it fails with this error:
"he update could not be found. there may be a network connection issue."
I tried installing it using the installation .exe from Microsoft website
and also faild with this message:
"Windows server upate services 3.0 sp2 setup cannot continue. please resolve the following issues, and the run the setup again.Internet Information Services (IIS) or additional IIS role service
    must be installed.
please refer to windows server update services 3.0 sp2 release notes for more information about prerequisites"
I must point that IIS IS INSTALLED and running on this server.
Does anyone knows how to solve this problem?
    Thank you!!

I want to install the WSUS Role on it an it fails every time..
While not directly related to your situation, it's important to note that SQL2012 is
not a supported platform for WSUS v3.2. Be sure to install with the Windows Internal Database instead.
When installing the Role it fails with this error:
"The update could not be found. there may be a network connection issue."
The key here is in understanding HOW the WSUS role gets installed on a Server 2008 R2 system. The binaries used to install the role are NOT present on the OS image, they must be either downloaded from the Internet or obtained from another WSUS server with
    the Dynamic Installer approved.
My guess would be that this system does not have Internet access. If you don't have another operational WSUS server, then this system will need to have Internet access to download the required binaries from MU, or else you'll need to download the standalone
    installer and install it manually.
I tried installing it using the installation .exe from Microsoft website and also faild with this message:
"Windows server upate services 3.0 sp2 setup cannot continue. please resolve the following issues, and the run the setup again. Internet Information Services (IIS)
or additional IIS role service must be installed.
I must point that IIS IS INSTALLED and running on this server.
Ahhh.. was it previously installed for some other application. Have you *verified* that it is installed in a configuration that is compatible with WSUS?
HINT: WSUS is, fundamentally, an IIS6/ASP.NET v2 application. My first guess would be that your existing installation of IIS7.5 does not have the IIS6 components enabled.

  • Migration of windows 2008 std 32bit DC to windows 2012 std

i have 32bit DC in my local environment having schema ver 44.. now i hav another server and want to migrate to windows 2012 std edition.. can some one guide me how to achieve this task?

    Hi Babarmunir,
In-place upgrades from 32-bit to 64-bit architectures are not supported. All editions of Windows Server 2012 are 64-bit only.
Domain controllers that run 64-bit versions of Windows Server 2008 or Windows Server 2008 R2 can be upgraded to Windows Server 2012. You cannot upgrade domain controllers that run Windows Server 2003 or 32-bit versions of Windows Server 2008. To replace
them, install domain controllers that run a later version of Windows Server in the domain, and then remove the domain controllers that Windows Server 2003.
Hence you need to have a fresh x64 machine which you can join to domain and install ADDS Role then promote as additional domain controller.
Provided the Forest Functional Level is Windows Server 2003 at minimum.

Upgrade Domain Controllers to Windows Server 2012 R2 and Windows Server 2012

System requirements for Windows Server 2012 are unchanged from Windows Server 2008 R2. For more information, seeWindows Server 2008 R2 with SP1 System Requirements (http://www.microsoft.com/windowsserver2008/en/us/system-requirements.aspx).
The Schema and Domain preparation:  One could run

  • Cant open dashboard on Essentials Role

I've added the essentials role to a existing server on domain, my domain controller is on another machine.
I've installed the dashboard on the DC and a 8.1 client for now.
The problem is that while the dashboard opens without a problem on the original server, both the DC and the 8.1 refuses to open it giving me the error:
“The following RemoteApo program is not in the list of authorized programs:
    Dashboard”
How do I add this app, since the GUI for remote app is disabled by default?
PS: the backup service seems to be working, but there is no way for me to recover files because of this.
    EDIT: solved.
After looking at a working network with the Essentials as the DC I was able to find the difference:
    On HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Terminal Server\TSAppAllowList the
    "fDisabledAllowList" was "0".
Changed it to 1. No logof was necessary :)

    Glad you found the answer.

Have you tried manually adding the Application Server role using Server manager?  That might give you a better error message on why the prerequisites installer can't add it.  If you can successfully add it using Server manager then you
can just re-run the prerequisites installer and it should be able to install the rest of the prereqs.

    Hello,
Thanks for your answer. Yes, I've tried to add this Application Role manualy. The error log I pasted here has been generated after this manual installation...
So it still doesn't work. :(
    Any other ideas ?
    Thanks in advance.

  • Change license to Windows 2012 R2 Essentials and Windows 2012 R2 Standard

    Hi,
I'm working for a small company (10 users). We have 2 servers; 1 is a normal file server, domain controller etc.; the second is dedicated for running a financial application. We bought and installed new hardware but with so called 'Technet licenses'.
Obviously we need to buy proper licenses. I have 2 questions :
    1. Am I correct in buying 1 Windows 2012 R2 Essentials license, 1 Windows 2012 R2 Standard license and 10 CALs ?
    2. Can I just install these licenses 'over' the existing 'Technet licenses' ?
Any help will be greatly appreciated.
    Ronald Ruijtenberg

I would purchase one Server Standard license, install it as a hypervisor on the server, then add to VMs.  First one is Server with the Essentials role, the second to run your financial application.  You can do this on one physical box and you
only have to purchase one copy of Server Standard.

  • Is it possible to have a server with both a 2007 DP role and 2012 DP role?

Is it possible to have a server with both a 2007 DP role and 2012 DP?
A client has been sold that as part of the migration the vendor will continue use the existing 2007 servers as DPs, and add the 2012 DP role as part of the migration - then at some future point remove the 2007 role.
Sounds a bit wonky to me, it would be great to have your insights, some MS documentation or case study - to either provide a level of comfort or give me some foundation to chime in and request they adjust their expectations... I haven't found anything yet.
It's not side by side technically, more of concurrent migration?
    Thank's for your insights.

Shared DPs are available if you are performing a migration but that's about it.

  • Bitmap image not showing up on windows title bar in windows server 2012 std

I have an application written in VC++ (MFC). Its a legacy app. Recently we were asked to check its compatibility with windows server 2012 std edition. We found some issues and one of those is as follows:
    1) We display a BITMAP image using Windows.StretchBlt() function on the titlebar of the app. It shows up properly in windows server 2003, win XP and win 7. But doesn't show up in windows server 2012. I am assuming its a windows paint issue because button
is there on titlebar as I can click on it and see the expected behavior. But its just not visible.
    Here is some technical workflow:
-> This function get called to paint the framwnd-
            CMainFrame::OnNcPaint()
                 CMDIFrameWnd::OnNcPaint();
// here we have code to paint the bitmap
Could anyone here please tell me why the same code is behaving differently in win server 2012? Also if there is any solution for this.

This forum is more of a general purpose forum about Windows Server.  You question is more closely related to programming issues.  You would be better served to post in a .NET development forum.
