Worries of a Macaholic

I just woke my computer from sleep, and the screen was filled with strange colors, and there was a line running vertically on the screen. The screen just looked really wrong. When I restarted my computer, everything was fine, but it took longer than usual to restart. My computer is working perfectly now, but is my computer in trouble?
Thanks in advance.

This sounds just like how my midplane (motherboard) with the bad caps started to show symptoms. If you haven't had to fix you Rev. A yet you probably have the same thing. Check inside to see if you have any bulging caps. There has been a lot of discussion on this topic. Just search on "bad cap"
Good Luck,

Every now and then my homepage changes to first something along the lines that Safe Search is on.. and now it changed to seek.mk, this worries me as I do not feel I have any viruses. I'm asking why it does that and if I should be worried.

I followed all prompts and they found nothing to suggest bearshare is on my computer.
But it is still automatically changing to become my homepage.

  • Legal worries with iBooks Author

    Hi,
I saw the advertisement for iBooks Author and it works perfectly for my situation as a writer.  This will be my first book ever and I was amazed by the possibility of using pictures in the text.  My only concern with it is in terms of copy rights.  Based on the video it looks I can use pictures from my profile and post them in the book which is great, but how about pictures I might need from Internet?  How Apple makes things legal in terms of the usage of text, pictures or any other material from the web?  Do I need to have a lawyer from my side when I publish my book?  Does Apple offer legal support if a copy right issue is questioned?  These are my worries.
    I will appreciate your responses.
    Thanks,
    Heriberto

Existing, applicable copyright law would apply to any content used in your book. If you do not own the rights to a content item, you must obtain the proper license and permission to use it. Apple cannot cure this on your behalf. If you intend to profit from any content which is not your own, I recommend the consultation of a licensed attorney with knowledge of contracts and the applicable copyright law, as the ramifications of any missteps elevate quickly at that point. Note that I am not an attorney, and with this reply do not pretend or intend to give legal advice.

  • Mac Pro Worries

    Hello,
I've had my Mac Pro about a month. When I first got it I tried Migration with my iMac. This didn't work. After looking on the forums I see I would have been better off not trying it at all. Anyway, I transferred everything manually. The Pro, for most the part runs fine, but I've had a few issues that worry me particularly this early on. (I've owned Macs for over 20 years). Some things that have happened:
    1. It wouldn't shut down. (once)
    2. It crashed. (once)
    3. At times it runs slow (the color wheel grinds away - daily)
    4. On start up there is this weird thing happening with the screen. I took this digitial image of the screen. This happens after the apple appears and before the login screen. You can see the image here: http://www.sweetthursdayweb.com/mac_screen.php
    My computer:
    Mac Pro: One month old
    500 GB Harddrive
    Model Name: Mac Pro
    Model Identifier: MacPro1,1
    Processor Name: Dual-Core Intel Xeon
    Processor Speed: 2.66 GHz
    Number Of Processors: 2
    Total Number Of Cores: 4
L2 Cache (per processor): 4 MB
    Memory: 2 GB
    Bus Speed: 1.33 GHz
    Boot ROM Version: MP11.005C.B04
    SMC Version: 1.7f8
    Serial Number: G87220K9UPZ
    My Questions:
    1. Could the failed migration have damaged something?
    2. I am often running a lot programs at the same time. I.e. Dreamweaver, Fireworks, Photoshop, Parallels (windows xp), Word, Entourage, Bridge, iTunes, etc Do I need more RAM?
    3. Anything I should do at this point?
I use the disk utility and run sudo periodic daily, weekly, monthly and also update the prebinding from the commmand line.
For the most part, it works fine, but I'm worried that these issues may be indicative of a problem that will get worse or that possibly something needs immediate attention.
Your thoughts and advice will be appreciated.
    Regards,
    Glen
Mac Pro, MacBook Mac OS X (10.4.9) iMac PowerPC G4

Glen - IMO - you are way short on RAM - 4GB - 6GB would make a difference with all those apps open at the same time. I would probably do an erase and reinstall of the OS and apps - kind of a pain but would eleminate the worries about migration effort having mucked up the works. Also - once stable - I tend to leave things ALONE.
FWIW - under 10.4.10 - I can not put my new MP to sleep from the Apple menu or activate screen saver under Expose - not sure what to do with that one !!

  • CD/DVD Drive worries

I have a 2 week old MBP and am in the process of loading up my itune library. Could transfer a bunch of tunes via senuti, but still have a lot of CDs to load. Machine runs very hot, while uploading CDs. I try to take breaks, but am worried to mess up the drive or the machine by loading too many CDs. Worries legit or unecessary ? thanks

technology is not perfect and can fail at any time. If it breaks, get it replaced via warranty.

  • While loop and data acquisition timing worries

    Hello everyone,
I apologize in advance if this is a silly question, but I could not find the answer around here.
I have made a VI to record continuously from 64 analog channels at a 5kHz sampling rate. I then stream this data to a tdms file. The data acquisition and write functions are in a while loop.
I the same loop, I have a bunch of other loops, that each run on their own wait timers to help limit the amount of memory they take up. I am now worried that this may somehow affect my data acquisition timing.
If I put a bunch of timed loops within another loop, does the outer loop run at the same pace as the slowest of the inner loops? And could that mess up my sampling rate?
I have attached my VI, in case what I just wrote makes no sense at all.
    Thanks for any tips...

Well, looking at your code you will only write to your TDMS file one time. You have multiple infinite loops within the main/outer loop. That means that the main loop will only run a single iteration because it cannot complete an iteration until all code within it completes. With at least two infinite loops inside the loop it will never complete. Not too mention the only way to stop your code is to hit the stop/abort button. NOt a very good way to stop your code. As someone once said using the abort to stop your code is like using a tree to stop your car. It will work but not advised.
As Ben mentioned try to understand data flow better. You have unnecessary sequence frames in your code where normal data flow will control the execution sequence.

  • Should I be worri

BG: I, too, fell to the headphone jack problem, so I sent in my Zen Micro to Creative (US). Anyway, I obtained an RMA on Sep. 20th, and for some reason, I did not send it out until Oct. 2th.
According to the UPS Tracking information, my Micro was deli'vered on Oct. 7th; however, when I go to check my RMA status, it says that the "product has not been received." I have, since then, sent an email to Creative about confirmation that my Micro has, in fact, been deli'vered; I sent the email about 2 days ago, and I haven't gotten a reply, yet. (Yeah, it's still a bit early...but I worry.)
    - Is there any other way to get confirmation about whether my player has been received? Or do I just wait for a reply to the email?
    - Chief worry: Since it is so close to the expiration date of my RMA, and since it is still in the system as "Product has not been received," will my RMA# be deleted from the system? Will I still be able to check on the status of my player? Will my information/RMA number still be in the "system" -- ie, if/when I contact Creative, will any/all record of my player be gone (assuming the status is not updated)?
Sorry if I was unclear at all...
...Am I justified in being worried? Any responses would be greatly appreciated!

It doesn't sound like there's anything to worry about, it would be best to wait till you get a response from Customer Support, but they should be able to check the status of the RMA for you.
Which region are you in, are you in the US? Did you give Support the same e-mail address as you used to sign up here?

  • Worries about adding Essentials Roles to 2012 STD

    Hello!<o:p></o:p>
This is my first real? Here so I would like to just say, with all that I have read, learned from this forum it has been a big help in the past, I’m
sure it will continue to be in the future, with that said.<o:p></o:p>
When I first started at my place of employment they had 3 small desktop servers running. All (3) were using server 2003 but not one of the OS were
activated. They were still working in a workgroup environment not a domain.  There were many more problems with the servers and network alike, but that would take too much time to mention. So to get to the point, I installed a new HP ProLiant DL320e Gen
8 server for them. Xeon® CPU E3-1270 v2 @ 3.50GHz, 16Gb 1600 Ram (4), 1Tb Sata HDD’s in Raid (0), Windows Server 2012 R@ STD. Do to the fact they had (40) WS and 50 users and growing. I installed server 2012 STD as the OS. I would have liked to go with Essentials
though. We still have one of the other servers running but at this point it still has server 2003 on it, and it used only for our Time clock software (Time Force II) do to the fact that software can't be installed on the Domain Controller. It's A nice server
though it has 16 GB, of ram and a Xeon E3-1220 v2 3.10GHZ CPU. So I have planes for it in the near future. At this point I'm thinking of making it the backup DC and E-mail exchange. <o:p></o:p>
To get to my question after giving you some back ground just in case it's needed. The main DC server is running 2012 STD and is fully active and operational
at this time. I would like to take advantage of some of the features of the essentials Role. Can I install the Essentials Role on an active STD server without affecting the server, settings and network as it is now?  I do believe with the essentials role
you can have another DC in the forest. , But not with a true Essentials server. So will going into (Add Roles and Features) and then adding the Essentials role work for me without effecting the domain and users and work files at it is now?<o:p></o:p>
Also I would like to get your opinion on the idea of using the 2nd server for a backup DC and Email exchange server. I would have to run the Time Force II software on
a Virtual Machine since that software can’t be installed on a DC. But that is fine with me I could use the VM for other things as well. ?
    J<o:p></o:p>
Sorry I will make my question shorter in the future just felt I should put some background in there since it’s my first post as a newbie.<o:p></o:p>

    Hi,
àI installed server 2012 STD as the OS. I would have liked to go with Essentials though.
Would you please let me confirm whether it’s a Windows Server 2012 or a Windows Server 2012 R2?
The Windows Server Essentials Experience role is available in Windows Server 2012 R2 Standard and Windows Server 2012 R2 Datacenter.
For installing Windows Server Essentials Experience role in a Windows Server 2012 R2 Standard in an Existing Active Directory Environment, please refer to following article and
    check if can help you.
    Deploying
Windows Server 2012 R2 Standard/Datacenter with Windows Server Essentials Experience role in an Existing Active Directory Environment
    Best regards,

  • Ease your worries about potential headphone jack problems for $6.50

    Just get one of these:
    http://www.radioshack.com/product.as...2559&hp=search
It's a right-angle, -foot headphone cable extension with strain relief and a volume control.
Actually, the reason I got one was because I use a pair of Grado SR-60's with my Touch and the molding around the top of the player won't allow me to plug them in all the way.
The remote volume control can also come in handy for use while in the Touch case.

Yes, it won't fix jack problem itself, but using extension cord You could prevent damages & prolong jack's life. You always leave this cord plugged into Your jack switching headphones on it, so You don't hurt this d?mn holeMessage Edited by rhythman on 03-3-2005 04:56 PM

  • 10.5.2 works ok for me! - but there are a few worries!!

Just would like to say that my upgrade when ok with no issues at all, including the graphics update!
    First impressions...
    1. Safari (or the wireless) is a lot faster!
    2. I like the translucent menu bar so I am keeping it switched on, though it seems that context sensitive menus from right-clicking don't seem as translucent as they were in 10.5.1
    3. Open preferences like network is a lot faster.
    4. There seems to be something going on with the file system, opening folders for the first time takes a second or two with lots of disk activity. Once opened once it is as quick as ever.
    5. My apps like Aperture seem to work ok
    6. Resizing windows in Finder causes lots of CPU activity (85% to 95% overall), lots more than 10.5.1. It is also slower, defiantly slower with the graphics! This is a major worry for me!!! Also resizing the Safari window causes lots more CPU (75% to 80%) activity but is smoother.
    7. Some interesting Console messages that I have not seen before:
    a) Feb 12 19:38:55 Macintosh Finder[188]: [QL ERROR] Generator database update takes too long... we will use what we currently have
    b) Feb 12 19:38:59 Macintosh /System/Library/CoreServices/Finder.app/Contents/MacOS/Finder[188]: CPSPBGetProcessInfo(): This call is deprecated and should not be called anymore.
    c) Feb 12 19:41:07 Macintosh [0x0-0x14014].com.apple.systempreferences[233]: objc[233]: Class O3Panel is implemented in both /System/Library/MonitorPanels/AppleDisplay.monitorPanels/Contents/Resources/Ext endedTouchSwitch.monitorPanel/Contents/MacOS/ExtendedTouchSwitch and /System/Library/MonitorPanels/AppleDisplay.monitorPanels/Contents/Resources/Pow erMode.monitorPanel/Contents/MacOS/PowerMode. Using implementation from /System/Library/MonitorPanels/AppleDisplay.monitorPanels/Contents/Resources/Pow erMode.monitorPanel/Contents/MacOS/PowerMode.
    d) All the users public folders got the respective message:
    Feb 12 19:38:37 Macintosh /System/Library/CoreServices/coreservicesd[86]: SFLSharePointsEntry::CreateDSRecord: dsCreateRecordAndOpen(xxxx Public Folder) returned -14135

Funny, but I don't see any evidence of similar things here. No excess disk activity when opening folders for the first time nor any increase in CPU load such as you've noted. None of the console messages.
If you did not use the standalone combo updater, then I'd suggest downloading it and reinstalling the update. Be sure you also install the Graphics Updater. Be sure you repair the hard drive and permissions prior to installing the update.

  • Ipod battery replacement worries

I am having my old battery replaced at an apple store. What are the chances that I will lose my songs??? Appreciate a reply!!! Thank you. Jeff

Are the really replacing the battery in your iPod?
The usually replace your iPod with a refurbished one.
    This
Apple - Support - Service Answer Center
    says
Will the data on my iPod be preserved?
No, you will receive a replacement iPod that will not contain any of your data and songs. Before obtaining service, it is important to back up your data. Apple is not responsible for the loss of information while servicing your iPod and does not offer any data transfer service.
In any event I would backup the iPod and all media on the iPod

  • Touchscreen Worries

Everyone once in a while my touchscreen won't work. Upon awakening the phone from sleep, the touchscreen doesn't respond to touch until I put it in sleep once again and then slide to unlock.
I've already called Apple Care and the very polite guy on the phone said that my touchscreen may be dying and that they do not replace that. Is that true and is there anyway to fix this?
I like this iPhone just fine and I don't really want to upgrade to a 3g right now. Money isn't the issue but I just don't see any reason for upgrading. If there is anyone that could help me with this, it would be appretiated thank you.

Apple does not have a schedule or repairs such as replacing just the iPhone's screen, which is more involved than just replacing a piece of glass with the first generation iPhone.
If your first generation iPhone is no longer under the standard one year warranty and you didn't purchase the AppleCare extended warranty for your iPhone, AppleCare will exchange your iPhone for a refurbished iPhone that includes a warranty for a designated "repair" cost. I believe the cost is $199 for an 8GB, but you should confirm. I doubt you can get the glass replaced only for much less than this and this price includes an entirely new iPhone that was refurbished.

  • Safari affected, maybe, malware & virus worries

About 4-5 days ago I was using Mozilla, and now I'm scared I picked up malware, so now mostly only on Safari.  Even so, I'm worried about doing online banking until I know what's up.  Despite that, I did online banking on Safari today, and the pages wouldn't load, or weren't clickable.  Also, I'm getting blank screens on Safari.  It all started after this happened a number of days ago, so I want to do a scan…. but newish to the Apple world, so don't want to screw things up even more (potentially) - by installing some incompatible malware/virus scanner.
    From the other day:
has anyone's Macbook Pro ever been hacked? I was using Mozilla, just opened a twitter acct, was trying to cross link with G+, and all of a sudden all this weird stuff was happening: url bars erasing on its own (and fast), pages jumping from window to window, 2 unread msgs in Gmail later marked as read. I shut down and restarted. I don't know if it's a key stroke I did or if I may've been hacked. worried.
Most recent thing today:  I just went to Dailymotion with Safari to watch a film/video.  This never happened on Mozilla (I have adblocker), but I got a popup window in the middle of the video offering something to speed up my mac:  I'm not sure if it was macdefender, but I think it actually mackeeper.  I quickly closed the Dailymotion tab…. and posted this message.
I would like to do some kind of scan on my mac, but am worried about installing any kind of free software to do this.  I'd also want to remove the software when I'm done.  So, here's the thing.  I'm more of an everyday, casual macbook pro user (10.7.5 OSX, refurbished)… so if responses get too technical, I'm afraid I may not be able to understand everything.  Thank you… (also, the Apple store sells virus software, but they won't somehow vouch for it… what's up with that?  (I would be willing to buy the lower cost one))….
Any help for this semi-Luddite would be greatly appreciated!  Thank you.

    1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.
Don't be put off merely by the seeming complexity of these instructions. The process is much less complicated than the description. You do harder tasks with the computer all the time.
    2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
    3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. As I wrote above, it changes nothing. It doesn't send or receive any data on the network. All it does is to generate a human-readable report on the state of the computer. That report goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. If you prefer, you can read it yourself without disclosing the contents to me or anyone else.
You should be wondering whether you can believe me, and whether it's safe to run a program at the behest of a stranger. In general, no, it's not safe and I don't encourage it.
In this case, however, there are a couple of ways for you to decide whether the program is safe without having to trust me. First, you can read it. Unlike an application that you download and click to run, it's transparent, so anyone with the necessary skill can verify what it does.
You may not be able to understand the script yourself. But variations of the script have been posted on this website thousands of times over a period of years. The site is hosted by Apple, which does not allow it to be used to distribute harmful software. Any one of the millions of registered users could have read the script and raised the alarm if it was harmful. Then I would not be here now and you would not be reading this message.
Nevertheless, if you can't satisfy yourself that these instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
    4. Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:
☞ Copy a line of text in this window to the Clipboard.
☞ Paste into the window of another application.
☞ Wait for the test to run. It usually takes a few minutes.
☞ Paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page.
The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. You don't need to copy a second time. Details follow.
    5. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode, under the conditions in which the problem is reproduced. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
    6. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
    7. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:
PATH=/usr/bin:/bin:/usr/sbin:/sbin:/usr/libexec;clear;cd;p=(Software Hardware Memory Diagnostics Power FireWire Thunderbolt USB Fonts SerialATA 4 1000 25 5120 KiB/s 1024 85 \\b%% 20480 1 MB/s Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
    8. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste by pressing command-V. The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
    9. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "Syntax error" or "Event not found," enter
    exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
    10. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, press the key combination control-C or just press return  three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
    11. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress. Wait for the line
    [Process completed]
to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report what happened. No harm will be done.
    12. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
At the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with the words "Start time." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
    13. When you post the results, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "You are not authorized to post." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.
    14. This is a public forum, and others may give you advice based on the results of the test. They speak only for themselves, and I don't necessarily agree with them.

  • IPod sync worries

I haven't been good about authorizing and reauthorizing computers over the years. My daughter has her iPod that is partially synced to this and that computer. She has dropped music on it from iTune Libraries I have had, but we have a problem now because of my laziness essentially.
My old laptop died. We moved out of the country, I have a new mba for work that they allow me to use as my primary computer for iTunes as well.
My daughter has an iPod full of misc music, but no primary library to sync from. For fear of losing all of her music she hasn't synced in a long time. Now on my new computer I have music I have downloaded that she wants.
At her tender age of 14, if we sync and it states that it has to wipe the iPod because its not the proper Library would be devastating to her.
How do I manage this now? Without being the terrible dad that lost all of her music?
Do I need something besides iTunes now just to by pass this library issue?
    Thanks in advance.

Since I have this under iPod sync, I might as well have this tossed in as well.
My daughter grabbed a bunch of photos from my old iPhoto Library and put it on her iPod before we moved out of the states and before my old powerbook crapped out.
She synced her myriad of selfies, friends selfies, and such to a new iPhoto Library but this one folder isn't seen. It shows on her iPod, but iPhoto says there are no new image to sync, but we see them in her photos app on her iPod but this is curious.
Why would this happen and how can we get them into the new iPhoto so that we have a back up.
    Thanks.
