Worth installing Windows 7 before selling MBP?

I'm planning to sell my MacBook Pro 13 (mid-2010) on eBay UK.  I can install Windows 7 Professional alongside OS X for about £25, but is that likely to be financially worthwhile?  Is a dual boot machine likely to be more in demand?  Or should I just do a clean install of Snow Leopard from the original disk and forget about Windows?

Thanks.  I've read that page, and also How to prepare your Mac for sale, by Thomas Reed.  It seems a pity that recent versions of OS X are tied to your Apple ID in that way.  I'd rather be able to offer a clean install of Yosemite (as some people on eBay do!), but yes, I will do a clean install of Snow Leopard instead.

I just bought a 2013 late model Mac Book Pro Retina and am wondering if it is worth installing windows through boot camp.
If I install the windows component in order to run an exe file and its component "Declans Korean Flash Cards"... will it make my mac suseptible to viruses overall due to having a windows component? also will it make my mac slower as well

If you are only going to use one or two window only programs then I wouldn't waste the space.  Try WinonX it allows you to install exe. Files on Mac without installing windows.

  • Installing Windows 7 on MBP from USB key?

    Hello all,
I've searched all around the internet, but I just can't seem to find a straight answer to this question:
Is it possible to install Windows 7 on an MBP with a USB key? Before you answer, read my process to see where I'm having trouble.
I want to install the Windows 7 beta on my MBP, but DVD media isn't available to me. I do, however, have a 4gb USB key. I've formatted the key with my XP install (through Parallels) to be bootable, and loaded the Windows 7 install on it. When I tried to use Boot Camp, the assistant asked me for a CD/DVD, so I figured that option is out.
My next attempt was to install rEFIx, which did show the USB key as a viable boot option, and even let me select the efi file to boot the Windows 7 installer. However, when I try to load it, I get a complaint:
    Starting legacy loader
    Using load options 'USB'
Error: Not Found returned from legacy loader
The firmware refused to boot from the selected volume. Note that external hard drives are not well-supported by Apple's firmware for legacy OS booting.
So now I am stuck. Can anyone offer me any advice regarding this matter? Any help at all would be greatly appreciated.

Windows normally cannot be installed nor boot from a USB or any external drive. This is a Windows problem. There are methods for installing and booting Windows from USB devices, but you will need to do some searching to find sites that detail the process. It's not likely you'll find much on Windows 7 because it's beta software, and not supported for installation on a Mac.

  • [HELP] Installing Windows 7 on MBP by USB using Boot Camp

    Hello!
Im using boot camp to try to Install windows 7 on my MBP. The problem is my cd/dvd driver is broken and I cant use DVD to boot from. I tryed to install by USB but when Im about to restart and boot try to boot the windows that I installed on the USB it says: 'No bootable device -- insert boot disk and press any key'
I have read that Apple changed in boot camp that if you have a DVD you cant use USB function to boot from in USB. I have fixed this problem by using this method from a video in youtube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?annotation_id=annotation_587318&feature=iv&src_vid= I3MNnbtfyzs&v=KmHxkahbK-g
But after I changed this I stil get problem when I boot that my laptop dont recognize the USB.
I need a help to solve this problem. Im using a MacBook Pro 13 (late 2011) OS X 10.8.5

I dont have the opportunities to repair my internal optical drive. Im looking for other solutions for this problem, there I can install the windows without the optical drive.

  • Installing Windows 7 2011 MBP?

    I have exhausted every option...
I am extremely frustrated with Apple and their need to hinder the support of Windows products. As much as I have been a loyal Apple user and defender, I may be starting to skew towards the Windows side of things.
I have tried multiple times in multiple ways to install Windows 7 Professional on to my MBP 2011 via USB, but everything I have found has failed. The addition of Mavericks means that the task is even harder, with many 'loopholes' being covered.
Is there any way of doing this and has anybody been succesful in doing so?
    Thanks in advance,
    Harrie

IIRC, the 2011 MacBook Pro models all shipped with optical drives.  This would be why teh Apple Boot Camp Assistant wants you to use that optical drive to install your Windows.  The support for installing Windows from a USB media was not added until the 2012 MacBook Pro with Retina was released.  Of course, the older MacBook Air models without an optical drive did have support for installing from USB, but that is because Apple did not ship them with optical drives installed.  Why do you refuse to use the optical drive that Apple shipped in your MacBook Pro to install windows, and why are you upset at Apple for your not using your machine as it was shipped form Apple?

  • Installing Windows 8 on MBP Retina

How can I install windows 8 on my MacBook Pro Retina with 2.6 GHz intel core i7 ?

OS X 10.8.3 adds Windows 8 compatibility with Windows 8, so now you can install Windows 8.
First of all, open  > Software Update and install OS X 10.8.3. Make a backup before updating. This will update Boot Camp, adding Windows 8 support.
The rest of the steps are just the same as for Windows 7. Open Boot Camp Assistant and follow the steps. If you have Windows 8 on a disc, you have to buy an external optical drive and use it to install Windows on your computer. If you have Windows 8 on a ISO, Boot Camp Assistant will provide you help to create a bootable Windows USB drive.
If you want all the steps to install Windows, read > http://manuals.info.apple.com/en_US/boot_camp_install-setup_10.8.pdf

  • Trying to Install Windows 7 onto MBP Mid-2010 but I get this "No bootable device -- Insert boot disk and press any key". What do I do?

I'm trying to install Windows 7 onto my MacBook Pro Mid-2010 (MacBookPro6,2) from a USB drive, since my Super Drive no longer will burn DVDs or CDs. I did the XCODE trick to allow me to make the bootable USB. But when it reboots after partitioning I get this, "No bootable device -- Insert boot disk and press any key" message. When I press a key after reinserting the USB it still won't boot after pressing a key. I unplugged anything connected to it and it still doesn't work. Is there any way I can get it to be recongized or do I just need to get an external disc drive and burn a disc that way?

If your computer came with an inetrnal optical drive, you must use that to install Windows.

  • Anyone managed to install windows 10 on MBP 2015?

via bootcamp. I tried so many times but it does not work. The laptop reboots while creating the windows partition but the windows installation does not start. Any idea? I know I can use Parallels etc but this question is about bootcamp.
    Thanks

I understand the pain. I have done it all and managed to accomplish even the Bios updates. Don't ask me how because I have been through so many machinations that I am not sure. I am not even sure if everything I have is correct and there is no way I can find out. All attempts to have HP "fess-up" has fallen on deaf ears. They absolutely refuse to do what should be done. Instead they wish you to pay for their support. That is something I would not suggest since I do not trust their answers and they have no way to guarantee their work. I had no problem with Microsoft. I let them take control of my computer and everything pointed to bios. My situation currently is that restarting is a crapshoot. It takes multiple restarts to get a solid screen that won't go black. This suggests the nvidia environment. Also I have nvidia crashes while processing  once i do get up. These seem to be caught and corrected by Microsoft notifying me of the nvidia and bios problems. I could not even get HP to define their error statement, regarding the bios update, that my hardware did not meet the systems requirements. One positive suggestion I can make to resolve these problems is to NOT buy HP hardware in the future. It  is obvious they are going downhill. They have tried to get out of the business before. Perhaps they should. FYI: I was originally VISTA, updated to Windows 7, update to Windows 8.

  • I installed windows before running bootcamp

What do I do now? Do I need to start over?

Do NOT use any Windows Utilities to change the size of any partition or modify the Partition Map in any way. Use ONLY Boot Camp Assistant.
If Windows modifies the partition map, it wipes out access to Mac OS X. Windows is not a nice guest.
Try holding down Option key as you Restart. This code is all in ROM. It will slowly, over a minute or two, draw an Icon for every potentially-bootable Volume. If you see one you like, select it and proceed. If it boots up, be sure to set Startup Disk in Preferences.
If all you get is Recovery, take it and use its Disk Utility (Repair disk) on your Macintosh HD.

  • Install windows on my MacBook Pro7,1 (Version 10.6) **doesn't have an optical drive**

I recently replaced my HDD for a 1 GB SSD. Then I took out my optical drive and installed a HDD. I wanted the extra space to store videos and pic and such. I also upgraded the RAM.
I want to use bootcamp to install windows on my macbook pro. However, when I go to Boot Camp Assistant, its says "You need an optical drive to install Windows."
***I removed my optical drive and now have a HDD. I want to use a USB.***
SO, after I click continue... it gives me two options. Option 1 says Download the Windows support software for this Mac. Option 2 says I have the Mac OS X installation disc that came with my Mac or I have already downloaded the Windows support software for this Mac to a CD, DVD, or external disk.
My question is, HOW DO I INSTALL WINDOWS on my Macbook pro?
do I have to have an optical drive? that means, I have to take out my HDD and put my optical drive back in. Or can I just use a USB? if so , HOW?
Can I install Windows (7, 8.1) to a USB? Or download the Windows support software to a USB? and click on Boot Camp Assistant and click option 2? so when it asks me to put in the CD, I can just plug in the USB and install the Windows support software? and then put the codes in to install windows?
I hope I'm making sense. I saw several videos on Youtube and i just need some help.
    Thank You.

So basically, I have trying to  install windows on my mbp using a usb drive. However bootcamp wont allow  me to do so since I have a optical drive on the laptop. I have been  searching for a long time and eventually came across this solution and I  would like to share this so u guys dont have to google all over the  place again .
The solutions given before by changing info.plist is correct except  that now Bootcamp crashes everytime you change it in OSX 10.9.
    Full solution:
    1. Add your Boot Rom Version(from system info) under DARequiredROMVersions.
    2. Add Model Identifier(from system info) under PreUSBBootSupportedModels
    3. Delete "Pre" from "PreUSBBootSupportedModels", so you have "USBBootSupportedModels"
The first 3 steps are same as before and if its not clear you can easily google solutions with screenshots.
The  next step is only for OSX 10.9, as it employs some kind of code  signature to prevent you from changing info.plist and cause bootcamp to  crash.
    4. Open your terminal, use the following command
    sudo codesign -fs - /Applications/Utilities/Boot\ Camp\ Assistant.app
Sudo  means using administrator privilege and u need to enter your mac  password. And the command resigns the bootcamp application so that it  runs with the new info.plist file and not crash.
    5. Continue on with your installation....
    Cheers.
P.S. back up info.plist before u change anything.

  • "Install Windows 7 or later version" check box not showing up in Boot Camp

I am following a Reddit guide to dual boot Windows 7 on my late-2011 MBP. I've done every step up to installing Windows 7, but there is no check box to "Install Windows 7 or later" in Boot Camp. I've tried several other resources but none mention this. There is a "Remove Windows 7 or later version" check box which has a description stating it can install a Windows partition as well, but when I select it and click to go ahead it only has a selection to remove a Windows partition. I hope I'm just having a brain **** here, because I've been at this for a minute and it's causing hair loss at 21. Haha.
Ohh, and here's the guide I'm following: http://sampower.ie/windows-7-on-mavericks-via-bootcamp-and-usb/

your mac seems to think you had installed windows before
do you have more than 1 partition on your drive, if so, boot camp assistant will not work
if not, restart your mac and do a pram reset
open disk utility and repair permissions twice
    open bca and try again

  • Any special timing on installing Windows on new MacBook Pro?

Just purchased a 13" MacBook Pro. It should arrive today. I am planning to install Windows and utilize Boot Camp. Is it best to install Windows before I really start doing anything else on the computer or does the timing not matter? I don't have my copy of Windows yet, so I am unsure as to whether I should wait to start setting everything else up on the Mac side. Any advice on this is appreciated...

What I did when I upgraded my MacBook's hard drive was run Boot Camp and decide how much space I wanted to set aside for my Boot Camp partition right away. I worked on that once I had OS X set up.
So, once you're finished with the initial setup of your MBP, run the Boot Camp Assistant to partition the hard drive, then quit the application once it's done partitioning. You can install Windows later.

  • Black Screen Installing Windows 7 with Bootcamp

I know it sounds like a known problem, but if tried alot of solutions i found on internet but noting worked yet.
    Here is some information:
Mac Mini mid 2011 (2.7 GHz)
I've installed windows before, but I have added a second SSD. al workes fine.
Installed OS X with a backup on de new SSD. Tried to start Windows with Parallels, but it couldn't find it anymore.
No problem I thought just format the old hdd and reinstall windows.
    Now this is what happens:
I start bootcamp. let it make a usb drive with an windows iso and the support software.
Now I create a partition on the hdd (150GB should do it).
Mac restarts. I hear the startup tune. A short white screen.
But then a black screen. no windows logo, or whatelse.
    I tried reseting NVRAM.
I found a lot of sites telling me to delete some files, but that is very difficult when there are no files.
I tried a lot of restarts and selecting the booting device. And just waiting for a few hours, but the screen stays black.
I even tried a partition on the SSD and using the whole hdd.
So what is the problem? I'm out of idea's.

Another thing I forgot to mention was that when I had windows, installed and running and had black screen issue on rebooting, I used to verify and repair my permissions using disk utility. All my permissions would get fixed and windows would boot up fine. But however when trying to do a clean install of Windows 7 over the past few days, all but one permission does not get fixed. Apple's support site says it can be safely ignored. But I feel this could be causing my problem. Here is the error from disk utility:
Warning: SUID file "System/Library/CoreServices/RemoteManagement/ARDAgent.app/Contents/MacOS/ARDAg ent" has been modified and will not be repaired.

  • When I format hard disk while installing windows it shows an error?

When I format hard disk while installing windows it shows an error and says that windows can't be installed to this hard disk, but I have installed windows before. How can I install windows?

You are getting this message because you are trying to create an iCloud account on a PC by signing with your Apple ID.  You can only sign into an existing account on a PC.  You first have to create iCloud account on an iOS device (iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch) running iOS 5 or higher, or on a Mac running OS X Lion (10.7.5) or higher.  After creating your account on one of these devices you will then be able to sign into the account using this ID on your PC.

  • Battery Drains Very Fast After Installing Windows on BootCamp.

    Hello,
I Bought MBP 13" Mid 2014 Retina Display last week and it wasn't a good start for me with Apple as I face the problem with FileVault and now with the battery. I had installed windows in my MBP through Bootcamp, but after installing it my battery drains vey quickly. It doesn't even last for more than two hours. Does anybody has any idea what should I do to fix this problem?

How long does the battery last on the OSX side under similar use?
