Worth of 2004 eMac

i'm thinking about selling my eMac (2004) to buy a laptop. the computer works great and is top shape and i've never had a problem with it, but i would like to have something more efficient for my desk and work. i'm not sure if this is the place to ask the question, but how much do you think is reasonable to expect for such a model? Can i sell apple-care with it? I think I paid a total of about $1200 (student deal)....maybe a little more....

What GHZ do you have? I'm always checking on prices of eMacs since I'm thinking of selling my 1.42 GHZ. I would say prices vary depending on CPU power, ram, hard drive, etc. Most prices average around 400-800$. 1.42 GHZ are very rare and go for more. With apple care, without knowing your CPU you will be most likely ranging in the 500-600 dollar range (very rough estimate). Please post back the stats of your machine!

Have 2004 eMac...screen goes black without notice.  Black screen is called "collapse to black" and occurs 4-5 daily. From what I understand, this is due to bad capicators????? Found a reconditioned 2005 eMac on line. Can I have the HD swapped from old eMac to reconditioned eMac without problems???...with regards to software applications. Old eMac is running 10.4.11 and reconditioned on runs 10.5. Suggestions, tips would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Might want to make sure both units are not affected. This is the range of serial number from the now-defunct Apple Repair Extention Program for USB 2.0 eMacs:
    G8412xxxxxx- G8520xxxxxx
    YM412xxxxxx - YM520xxxxxx
    VM440xxxxxx - VM516xxxxxx
A "collapse" is more indicative of a video cabling issue, but the bad caps produced such a wide range of problems that it's hard to sort through them.
If the old eMac is a USB 2.0, which a 2004 unit should be, the HD should exchange with the new one. As the last of the eMacs shipped with Tiger, the new computer should have no probelms with a 10.4 boot volume on the old drive. You can upgrade to Leopard one you have hte new disk in place.
NOTE: Takeapart and reassembly on the USB 2.0 must be done "just so" or you can permanently damage the power switch. Instructions for the USB 1.1 takeapart are slightly different , and the power swtich damage is usually caused by people using the older instructions on a newer eMac.
If you are not up to the takepart nor can you find a local computer tech who knows these. consider taking the drive out of the dead computer(won't make much difference if you damage that one as it's dead), buy an external Firewire enclosure, and put the old drive on it and use it to move data to the new computer. Then you can leave the external attached as a backup drive.
Is the new one a 1.42Ghz model? They have been practically trouble-free around here. We have one and it's been rock solid since we bought it as a refurb in Jan 2006. The 1.42G has the advantage of a Core Image-enabled video chipset, the ATI 9600.
And all USB 2.0 eMacs can, with modern memory modules, support up to 2G of RAM.

  • 2004 eMac won't start in 10.3.9, is there a way to get 10.5 onto it from DL DVD-R?

    Hi folks.
I'm trying to set up this ancient eMac for my mom. It had been running 10.3 or something, but I seem tyo recall it being wierd in that I couldn't get Safari (of all things) to run on it. So the other day, I put it in target disk mode and used a firewire cable and an old iBook to erase the HD and reinstall 10.3 onto it, as well as run the 10.3.9 updater.
It won't start up. It stalls at the apple logo.
So I figured that since it's RAM is maxed I'd put 10.5 onto it. I OWN 10.5 but I cannot for the life of me find it. My only copy of 10.5 is a DVD-R I bought on Craigslist from a guy who represented it as a genuine retail copy (I disputed the transaction through Paypal and was baffled that they decided in his favor). Anyway, this eMac cannot read DL DVDs. I have an external optical drive that can, but the eMac will not start up from it.
I tried to install it from my macbook pro with the emac in target disk mode but the installer won't let me because it assumes the volume 10.5 is going onto is attached to an intel processor.
I know there's some trick. Can anyone help?
    Thanks!

I cannot find the eMac install disk, and I haven't been able to get it to start up from my 10.3 CDRm (holding down option or c), though I read something somewhere about these not being able to start up from system folders earlier than those they shipped with. I've dealt with this sort of thing several times before, and it always seemed to work to simply use target disk mode.
It definitely won't start up fromt the 10.5 DVD-R, and I'm pretty sure I tried putting the MBP into TM to use its optical drive as well, but it didn't work. But it's worth trying again, and I appreciate your input greatly.

  • 2004 Emac Kernel panic - HELP PLEASE

So i just recently acquired this 2004 or maybe 2005 Emac desktop computer. My boss said she erased everything from it before giving it to me and now when i start it up it first goes to the white screen with the spinning wheel, and then it goes to the blue screen with the mouse.  I ran the techtool delux plan and recieved an error that said the volume structure failed # -987.  I then attempted to reinstall the Mac OS x 10.3.5 install disk, it gets to the last step and then says their is an error and to try again.  Eventually I recieved the Kernel Panic screen that says "unable to find driver powermac 6,4" i've tried searching all the forums but can't find anything. PLEASE HELP ME!!!!!!!

Great catch Allen, thanks, good eyes!
That appears to be for the USB2 eMacs!

  • What keyboards are compatible with eMac?

I have a 2004 eMac with Bluetooth connections.  The original keyboard died out and was replaced with mac compatible Microsoft Mobile keyboard 6000.  It keeps dropping the connection so I am looking to replace it with something else.  Any suggestions would be appreciated.

You can often find real Mac keyboards at thrift stores for a few dollars. Any Mac USB keyboard will work
As for third-party boards. I like Kensington--good Mac support:

  • EMac crashing

    G'day,
My 512/149Gb 1.25Ghz eMac purchased Aug-04 has recently started to crash badly (ie up to 3 times in 1 day), where by the entire system freezes up.
The only semi-common association with when the system is crashing is the use of Office X (v10.0.0), though it has happened when those apps (Word, Excel & PP) weren't running.
Other symptoms have been - trying to open Date/Time and it instead opens a folder... No responce when trying to open the System Prefs from the Apple menu...
Over the 18months since buying the computer I've gradually upgraded from 10.3.4. to 10.3.9 as the updates have come along. I've tried re-installing the 10.3.9 upgrade, but have continued to have problems. I've run programs like Janitor, Cocktail, Rember, but no luck.
What should I try next? Could this be more than software problems?
    cheers
    Travis

Actually, if the problem with this mid-2004 eMac is due to the bad capacitor problem that's been cropping up (see eMac freezes randomly, open window turns into broken up jibber), then you can contact AppleCare and/or Apple Customer Relations, or just directly contact an Apple Authorized Service Provider (AARP). An AARP can open the eMac and directly check for tell-tale bulging / leaking capacitors.
When you call AppleCare, if you're outside the initial 90-day free phone support (three years if you purchased the extended AppleCare warrenty), you'll be asked to provide a credit card number; the charge to that card is supposed to be waived if the problem turns out to be a hardware issue covered under warrenty. (If your warrenty has run out you can ask at the end of the call to have the charge waived anyway.) You'll need to describe the problem, plus the steps you've taken to try to troubleshoot the issue, mostly because the first-tier support people have to run through a script before you can ask to be escalated to a supervisor who can authorize out-of-warrenty service.
When you reach a supervisor, you want to describe the symptoms, the date your eMac was purchased, and mention the referenced Apple Discussions thread. Ask to have an AARP authorized to inspect the eMac and ask that if the capacitor problem is detected taht the logic board replacement be provided by Apple. You may be asked to pay for the AARP labor with the logic board replaced free; you may get the whole repair done free; you may get nothing --- it seems to depend n part on how persuavive you are talking to the AppleCare supervisor. If you're turned down by AppleCare, some have reported success going to Apple Customer Relations. As with any transaction, being firm but polite is key (way too many posters have written to denounce the service they recieved, when their own account of the interaction makes you wonder no one's figured a way to reach through the phone lines to strangle them for rudeness).
Before you do anything else, check there isn't a problem with the hard drive or the OS or with OS kernel extensions. Does the computer behave if you Start Up in Safe Mode? What's reported by Disk Utility> Repair Disk when you run it from the OS X Install disc's Installer menu, as described in Using Disk Utility and fsck? What's reported by Apple Hardware Test? Also go through the "applications quit unexpectedly" and related sections of Dr. Smoke's The X Lab: The X-FAQs.
You want to rule out any other explanations of your problems before concluding it's the bad capacitor freezing issue. Good luck.

  • GarageBand v2&? latency if update to Tiger(and add Ram) to eMac 1.25ghz

    Hi,
I have used GB on and off and like it alot
    and to preface my post
and if anyone with a emac with these specs (1.25Ghz 1GB ram and a 80GB HD
(the USB 2.0 model) I think there is one model after mine with a 1.42 or 1.45Ghz processor
    1) If Someone just added Tiger how did Garage-band work after? Latency issues or
(I am using Version 2) of GB I do not need the pod casting features of V3 and V4 looks cool but V2 is fine
2)* and if someone added Tiger and upgraded to 2GB of Ram how did Garage-band work any issues with their eMac or other Mac *(I don't want to crash it)
I like Garage-band a lot and have posted on Macjams.com (but not for awhile) I have used Audacity
Abelton Lite (acquired through a gear purchase) and am up to version 6, Reason Adapted for Korg (V3), Tracktion V1 (*not bad) got it free when Mackie gave it away (free full version and license) but never pursued V2 or V3 and I think its on its way out now also, I keep coming back to Garage-band V2 as its user friendly, can use live instruments, virtual instruments with a midi controller and loops as well. my eMac is a 1.25ghz USB 2.0 (version) 1GB of ram and a 80GB hard drive. *I am running Panther 10.3.9 and as any one running Panther I am sure realize the browser issues and even getting access to free-ware or demo's , I read on OWC www.macsales.com that my eMac and the one later with a higher GHz processor can run with 2GB and they referenced a Mac Document as well. I think by adding Tiger (just adding it by itself)? I may run in to latency issues (from what I have heard and read) so I am considering doing two things (updating to Tiger 10.4.1) and adding
ram (two 1GB sticks) depending on where I buy the Tiger Update (used for eMac or the universal installer (may not be correct term) and buying reliable ram The cost could vary
new I saw Tiger for around $99.00 and used for emac $3.00 (risk taking yes) and ram
was $ 29.00 a stick so $58.00 + shipping on ram and anywhere from $3.00 (if lucky to $99.00 + shipping (so could be as low as $61.00 to as high or higher $157.00
? though its a 2004 eMac do I want to invest (on the high side $157.00 on a 6 year old eMac or save my dollars and wait and get a Imac (? 1199.00 + applecare) Education pricing) or a laptop (the white molded plastic Mac-book is ? $849.00 pr $899.00
but would like 4GB of ram and a large HD as I would like to get in to Logic Studio down the road or Logic Studio Express* (just don't buy the education version as You can not update to the full program)*not sure why that is but I read it in several user reviews in the Apple Ed section on Apple Express (You used to get a price cut (prior version of express and full version not sure about the current versions (I guess If You bought the full version at a discount You would ? should ? be o.k. (I would check that for sure though and Logic used to be $1,000 and Express $500.00 so it has come down a huge amount and has great features (imo)
    * crazy enough I was surfing for free-ware and a Russian site I came upon some how?
was offering down loads of Jam-packs (even the #1 Jam Pack which is no longer sold) and its the only one I ever bought as its cross genre ,
*The Russian site even had Logic Studio 9 (full version, main stage, all jam packs ? in English or Russian but obviously illegal (I did not touch anything) or attempt any downloads (it had Mac and PC and high dollar programs of each if it really worked or even down loaded (I did not touch anything)
In the past I did buy Jam Pack Number One (no Genre or type noted) a nice varied program and also Sonic Boom Box but I give it a so so as you need a large 61 or full 88 key midi keyboard (or I am doing something wrong) *I use a M-Audio Radium 49 and about 2/3 of the keys work (or get sound unless You adjust the octave switch) I was interested in the virtual instruments the most too, I have no issues with the Jam Pack Vitual Instruments (guess read the manaul (again)
and if anyone with a emac with these specs
    1) just added Tiger how did Gargeband work after
    2) and if someone added Tiger and upgraded to 2GB of Ram how did Garageband work
and any issues with their eMac (I don't want to crash it)
Sorry for the long post (I need a Twitter account to limit text!)
    Peace

  • Trying to work out what model my emac is

I recently bought a second hand Emac, which shows the processor as being a 1.0Ghz. However, I noticed that the memory modules are not the 133 standard, but are in point of fact, Pc2700 DDram modules. The serial number indicates that this is a USB2 model, but I'm puzzled as to the fact that the USB 2 models were 1.25 GHZ
Can anyone throw any light on this? I 'm tempted to think that it has been retrofitted with a lower speed processor, but would like some opinions.
    Many thanks

Hey redcity and Welcome to Apple Discussions,
I recently bought a second hand Emac, which shows the processor as being a 1.0Ghz. It says that in System Profile?
However, I noticed that the memory modules are not the 133 standard, but are in point of fact, Pc2700 DDram modules. The serial number indicates that this is a USB2 model, but I'm puzzled as to the fact that the USB 2 models were 1.25 GHZ
Well according to the manual the 2004 eMacs were:
    "What’s New (April 2004)
    eMac (USB 2.0)
Apple announced a revision to the eMac product family. Powered by G4 processors
running at up to 1.25GHz, with a system bus of 167 MHz,..
    • Bluetooth (optional): Fully integrated Bluetooth is available as a build-to-order option
    • 922-6201 Bluetooth board
    • 922-6402 Bluetooth antenna
    • USB 2.0 ports: This computer has three USB 2.0 ports
    • Revised logic boards
    • 661-3279 1 GHz board: EEE code QDJ or QHL.
    • 661-3280 1.25 GHz board: EEE code QDK or QHM
    • Memory, 333 MHz DDR
    • 661-3322, 512 MB
The RAM expansion modules used in the eMac (USB 2.0) computers are 184-pin
SDRAM DIMMs (dual inline memory modules) that are 2.5 V, unbuffered, 8-byte,
non-parity, and PC2700 compliant. The speed of the SDRAM devices must be rated
at 167 MHz (7 ns) or faster. Refer to Kbase article 86718 for more information.
    Important:
The memory expansion cards (DIMMs) must use SDRAM devices as specified above. DIMMs for previous models of eMac or DIMMs that use EDO or
SGRAM devices will not work. If they are installed, the computer will beep, and the
power light will flash several times when you turn on the computer. This indicates that
the computer cannot find any useable RAM."
Can anyone throw any light on this? I 'm tempted to think that it has been retrofitted with a lower speed processor, but would like some opinions.
Apparently your's is a slightly earlier version that was a transitional version.
This is noted in the manual but not here:

  • EMac memory

Ok, i am planning on upgrading my iMac g3 to an eMac. I just bought PC133 ram for my g3 and i was wondering if this would also work in the new eMac i will get. Would this be possible, and if not, what memory would i need?

Strange your eMac's serial number isn't listed. True, the picture in the Apple Knowledge Base article ends in "XYZ", which isn't in the list, either, but the pictured machine's physical MAC number (Ethernet ID) is 00 00 00 00 00 00, which says the photo is of an engineering mockup and not a real serial number. Has you Mac ever been in the shop for repair? I can't imagine why a shop would change the serial number label to an apparent non-eMac number, unless the drive door was replaced by one scanvanged off a different Mac.
    Check your eMac's CPU clock speed. 700 and 800 MHz and 1.0 GHz (before mid-April 2004) eMacs use 168-pin PC133 SDRAM DIMM chips. 1.0 (after mid-April 2004), 1.25, and 1.42 GHz eMacs use 184-pin PC2700 DDR chips.

  • Going wireless on eMac and iBook

Three of us live in an apartment next to our friends who have wireless. My roommate's 2004 iBook is able to log in to the Internet b/c she has wireless capabilities. My 2004 eMac (which I believe is the 133 speed) was originally running on cable modem, but since we're trying to save a few bucks I'd like to go wireless. Is it just a matter of choosing the right card and installing it? My understanding is that it would take Airport Extreme. Furthermore, if I want to hook up my ibook (which doesn't have a wireless card) to the internet, can I just network it to my eMac once the card has been isntalled in the eMac? Hope this makes sense. Thanks.

You just need to install an Airport Card in your eMac.
Once your eMac is connected to the internet via Airport you can plug your iBook into your eMac with an ethernet cable and enable Internet Sharing via Ethernet. On your eMac go to System Preferences > Sharing > Internet and Start Internet Sharing.

  • No video on bootup?

The power light goes on but I get no video. What would be the reason for this and can one do something on their own without having to send it in. It is a 2004 emac and has perfectly fine till all of a sudden I get no video from it.

Your eMac may be plagued with a common issue.
    http://www.apple.com/au/support/emac/repairextensionprogram/
Unfortunately it has probably been too long, and your computer may not be covered anymore (if it falls within the range). I've heard of people going to Apple/Apple stores and still successfully entering this program despite having past the date though.

  • Two Macs, wireless network - working off same document??

I have done some searching on here and can't find what I am looking for - so here is the post.
I just got a new 17" iMac. I gave my 2004 eMac to my wife. I am connected to our DSL router via ethernet cable, she is connected via Extreme wireless card. Both running most up-to-date OSX.
We have always had one iPhoto folder (thanks to that nifty program that lets you create them wherever you want - can't think of its name) that we shared when we both had accounts on the eMac. We also share the same Quicken data file from our two accounts.
I am wondering if there is a way to continue to do this the way we are now set up?? I know I can turn on "sharing" in iPhoto so that she can see my library and I can see hers. I have read that was really slow over the wireless connection though. But if I wanted, is there a way for us to continue to use the same library folder - so that no matter who uploads pictures on their computer, we always see the same thing?
That is the same thing I want to be able to do with the Quicken file - whoever inputs transactions doesn't matter. We both still see the same data.
    Thanks for any knowledgable help!
    Eric

Actually, I figured out how to do the document thing. I logged in to one machine from the other (file sharing turned on), saved password login info in keychain, and went to the file I wanted to open. Once opened, the program saves that as the location for the file. SO....when I go to open the program and it loads the file, if I am not logged into the machine it logs in automatically and opens!
On sharing one iPhoto library. I have played with it a little (but can't do it fully yet b/c my new Intel iMac has iLife '06 and the eMac has '05 - the library on '06 is unreadable by the '05 version). Actually, the delay is very minimal, and once the library is "loaded" things seem to work at about normal speed. From what I have seen, it seems very doable with acceptable speeds. Mostly that has been on the "share library" feature - but that is over wireless. So I would think that whether I am sharing a library, or running the library from the machine, it should be the same result.
    thanks for feedback.

  • Panther Install Failure

Hello - I recently bought this late model, July 2004, Emac for my daughter; a great machine. However, due to the past owner's various passwords etc, I decided to do an archive & install of the Panther 10.3.9 OS. I bought the install [definitely install - not upgrades] disks new from Ebay. The first disk mounted well, no issues; I did a restart while holding down the 'C' key. But I was not prompted though to insert the second disk, and am unable to get it to respond or change from a simple screen showing various pdf files in many languages. Nor would the third disk, Panther upgrade, from 10.3.5 to 10.3.9 initiate. I did verify & repair permissions before and after. And now, when I tried internet connect, we have dialup, I get a flag up saying that 'can't find PPP kernal extension'...Dead in the water. I anticipate having to take it into the shop to accomplish a complete reinstall; but wanted to see if an home remedies first might be tried. Any ideas? Thanks, Eric

  • Where is my contrast?

Hi, my new iMac doesn't have a contrast adjustment on it in the display area like my 2004 eMac does. Also my eMac has richer colors than my new iMac.
How can I change the contrast on my new iMac and how can I make the colors richer? I went to view satellite images on google maps on both computers and that is when I noticed that my iMac was too bright and showed less color than my eMac does. I did turn down the brightness and change the color profiles back and forth but it still is lacking something and is in no way as colorful as my eMac is.
And is there is way to control the brightness with my keyboard?
    Thank you,
    Martha

Hi, I found the contrast ok and used it. I couldn't use it very far because it made the colors all dark. The colors just are not very colorful. My eMac has nice colors on it but not the iMac. It's too bright! Contrast makes it actually too intense and dark. I've tried the different color profiles and am wondering if it's hard to come up with a new profile. Can I get nicer colors that way? My colors seem to be too dim.
My computer is quiet as it sits there but when I go to use it, it makes soft bubbly noises like a coffee perculator. I'm not sure if my screen goes brighter with time or not, I'll keep an eye out for that. I do know that the brightness overpowers everything else. If I turn the brightness down, the colors get too dim.
    Thanks,
    Martha
