Would a 200$ video card be a significant improvement over Intel HD Graphics 4000 chip?

Hi I've been using the build-in graphics processor on my motherboard since building my desktop computer 2 years ago. I never felt a need to upgrade. The only thing I notice is that sometimes when I play high-res video in Windows Media Player, it takes a while for the image to appear clearly and non -pixelated. Could this be because I don't have a video card installed?  I wouldn't pay 200$ to solve this issue but I am curious to know if a video card in that price range would significantly speed up performance in the Adobe applications? Or do I need to spend much more money on a video card to make it worth the upgrade?
Lookin forward to your answers...

Since that has nothing to do with Adobe, I don't know how to answer your question
But, two links that should help

Does the standard Intel HD Graphics 4000 in the 13 inch Macbook pro stand up to other graphics cards with dedicated memory ( 1GB of memory for instance)? I need a laptop for college and the Engineering program suggests a dedicated video card with minimum 1GB of video memory.

I have a Intel HD 4000 in my Mac Mini (late 2012), and it's okay for what I need it.
    However:
    - there were a few issues with flickering on the video output to external monitors. These were solved through a firmware update that came with OSX 10.8.3 - for the majority of the users. There is apparently still a small group of users that still has issues. You can read long threads about this here:

    and here
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4490924?start=0&tstart=0
So for most of us (me included) this issue is solved, but it seems that certain displays / monitors don't work well with the intel HD4000, don't know if there is a pattern or a list of monitor models...
    - there was an issue with the color calibration on the HDMI output. No matter how much you tried to calibrate, the results remained unsatisfying. All light colors were crushed to white, wrong contrast, ...

The same firmware update improved this a little, good enough for me, but I can imagine it's not good enough if you do graphic work and need reliable colors from your monitor. On HDMI output, the thunderbolt/MDP output is fine. So it's mainly a dual monitor setup issue.
If it's for graphic work, I'd go for a Mac Book Pro with dedicated GPU !

The 15" Retina's will have better performance than any 13" Retina. Not only do the 15" machines have dedicated GPU's, but they also have quad-core processors, whereas the 13" Retina's only have dual-core processors.

  • Update graphics card Intel HD Graphics 4000 512 MB

i would like better garphics what sould i get or what ?? 2.9 GHz Intel Core i7 8 GB 1600 MHz DDR3 Intel HD Graphics 4000 512 MB  OS X 10.8.4 (12E55)thats what i have

Go to the Apple Menu > About this Mac > More information for details.
All newer CPU's have the Intel 4000 integrated graphics, however if you got the 15" then it also has dedicated graphics and it switches to either as the need arises.
    So you have both.
What I suspect is Apple is going to eventually go all CPU graphics as soon as the processors get strong enough as it's less expensive to produce.
Only Windows 3D gaming towers will soon have dedicated graphics the way things are going. The MacPro hasn't be updated in ages.

  • Would 256 SSD on 2012 Mac Mini significantly improve Final Cut Pro Performance?

Would a 256 GB SSD on a 2012 Mac Mini significantly improve Final Cut Pro Performance? I'm considering a 2012 Mac Mini 2.6 Quad Core with 16 GB RAM and a 256 GB SSD with external Thunderbolt drives.

It will only improve the read and write performance, and this is not as important as the processor and the GPU in Final Cut Pro.
The Mac mini has got an integrated GPU that may work if you are a home user, but if you are a professional user, you should consider an iMac, a 15-inch MacBook Pro or a Mac Pro. You won't notice a big performance increase

  • Are Lion gestures a significant improvment over Trackpad+Snowleopard

I have a magic trackpad with snow leopard for my iMac. The trackpad is brilliant and allows me to use gestures. Does Lion add significantly to that experience (mainly, the use of gestures)? I will eventually upgrade but I was wondering if I am missing out big time in the meanwhile.

Nevermind. A lttile digging and find out that the Magic Mouse has a limited set of multi-touch capabilities:

It appears the Magic Trackpad has the full set of capabilities:

  • MBP mid 2012 crashing, is it the video card?

Hello. I have an mid 2012 MBP with an Intel 4000 graphics card. I think it is causing the computer to crash.
I recently re-installed Civ 5 which ran great last fall. At first it ran OK, then after a few hours of game time my system crashed during a time when the monitor went to sleep (I was walking my baby). This happened a few more times then crashed while open. The system froze and the image was overlayed with some squares consisting of black, green, and lavender bars. At first this only happened when the game was open. The when I tried to reboot I got the beep-beep-beep alarm that means bad RAM(?). So I ran an AHT and it came back fine for RAM and CPU if I understood how to interpret it correctly. Also the system crashed once or twice when the game was not running.
I have tried a partial RAM reboot, a system controller reset, upgrading to 8 GB RAM, and partitioning my hard drive and installing the game in the other partition. If I knew how to get crash logs for the ?panic kernel? I would. Actually, I'm trying to get into code writing and IT so this is pretty interesting. Here is the report i got from EtreCheck

  • Video card dell dimension 3000

    Hey, everybody.
Im planning to buy a new video card for my ; dell dimension 3000,  Intel(R) , Celeron(R) CPU 2.4GHz, 2.00 gb of ram, and I believe power supply is 250 W.
    So here is the bunch of questions;
    1. Seems like my computer uses a pci type memory cards, my question here is can I use these wide known pci e cards?
    2. Second one is I seen that there are different sizes of video cards out there for sale, so how do I figure out which one I should use, I mean is there a maximum number of mb that my computer supports or I could use any size of video card?
..and I think so far I do not have more questions about my video memory card purchase.
*all help would be appreciated Thanks*

    1. you will not be able to use a PCI-E card in the Dimension 3000.
    2. Your choices are very limted on PCI videocards and the performance increase is not worth the money that a new card will cost you. You could go with a 512mb PCI card but with the slow celeron processor and and low end power supply. You still will not be able to play of the new games that are out right now.
It's time for a new computer.

  • Video Card

Hello all ?  I need some assistance if you would please ?  I recentley purchsed a p7 1380t running win 7 home premium.
I5 3330, 3.0GHz....6GB of memory, 64 bit.  The graphics are on board, I am considering installing a video card. Not wanting to break the bank ?  What would be a good video card to install.
After watching quite a few utube video's I notice a lag/ lack of performance. I'm thinking a new/better stand alone video card would solve this issue.
Any and all recomendations will be appreciated. Also would a new video card be a hard install ? And what would be required ?  I'm not totally in the dark and I'm familiar with the insides of a computer........

    BlueWing, welcome to the forum.
I believe that a new dedicated video card would increase system performance considerably.  However, depending on what you want to do with the computer, it may mean a power supply unit (PSU) upgrade, also.  The existing PSU is only 300W.  Most newer mid-level cards require a minimum of 400W.
Here is a very good card that will show you what I mean.  Look at the section titled "System Requirements" in the "Details".  The card is older, so the price is reasonable.  It should give you good performance with Youtube videos.

  • Time to upgrade video card?????

I have a two year old MacPro 2.66 GHz Dual-Core Intel with 4 GB RAM, 4 internal 7200 rpm 500gb HDs and a NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GT (256mb) video card. Would upgrading the video card improve the operation of LR2 relative to the rest of my hardware and if so, what make and model would folks recommend? Thanks in advance-

    > That said, how much difference could he really expect when going beyond 4GB? In my experience with
    > Windows, there doesn't seem to be a whole lot of difference between 2GB and 4GB yet, and beyond
    > 4GB it seems like the difference is due more to the 64bit aspect and less to the extra RAM.
On Windows, unless you do some deliberate messing around, applications receive a maximum of 2GB even
though the 32-bit processor can access 4GB. The remaining 2GB are reserved for the OS, device
drivers, hardware that's mapped into memory, etc. But that 2GB for applications is the maximum size
of *virtual memory*. If you have 2GB of physical RAM, the app will never get that much physical
memory because Windows reserves some for itself and drivers, etc. Because Windows needs some
physical space for itself, it can be a performance improvement to go to 3GB in a machine so that
applications can (potentially) have their entire 2GB address space in physical memory *and* Windows
can put itself in the extra 1GB of physical memory. Going all the way to 4GB of memory doesn't add
much beyond going to 3 because Windows tends not to need more than 1GB for itself.
Going beyond 4GB can make a huge difference depending on what kind of work you're doing. If you're
doing work with large images, it can make a huge difference and it has little to do with the CPU's
computational performance being any better. It's that the CPU can now address much more physical
memory and thus the app doesn't incur any performance hit paging to/from disk.
Hope this is clear - let me know if not.

  • Streaming G5 through a TV- do you need a good video card?

    Hi Everyone
I recently fried my videocard (thanks so much to everyone here who helped me with that issue), just as I bought a DVI-Svideo adaptor that would allow me to stream my G5 through my TV.
Unfortunately, my videocard was the Radeon 9600 card - a fairly high end model used for gaming and such. I thought I should just replace it (despite the high cost - over $400) as it would likely make my viewing movies on my TV that much better.
Problem is, NOBODY in vancouver seems to have these cards, and I've already waiting 3 weeks for one on backorder. Half of me wants to just go buy one on ebay as opposed to waiting for this local supplier to recieve one.
Before I turn to Ebay- I thought I should ask the experts... do you need a high end video card to watch video on a TV through your G5? Or would the extra video card power only be viewable if I was gaming or using Aperture or something like that?
Frankly, I don't do much photo editing - the extent of my use would be videos and youtube.
Any thoughts? Thanks in advance for any advice.
    Cheers
    Powermac G5   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

I have my dual 2.5ghz G5 hooked up to my 42inch HDTV plasma.
I have the 256mb Nvidia GeForce 6800 Ultra DDL.
so I can run the apple cinema 30inch also.
what i noticed to be a deffance when i hook it up to my tv.
depending on how new the tv is.
pixel ratios are affected by how good your videocard is.
The better the card the higher pixel quality you will have on you TV.
I have my TV hooked up DVI to HDMI. at a 1920X1080 P
The quality is if i have an HDTV 460P tv show downloaded.
The quality if pretty amazing when i run it on my tv.
The higher the qualit of video card the better the qaulity on the tv.
The better the TV the better the qaulity. they both factor.

  • Thunderbolt docks for external video cards. Any out there?

I am finally retiring my Mac Pro 1,1 for a stacked i7 Mac Mini. The only downside to the Mini is the onboard Intel HD Graphics 4000. I've already upgraded to the ATI Radeon HD 5770 and would like to keep that power.
To that end, I've been looking for a Mac-compatible Thunderbolt-enabled external graphics dock. Across the web, I've read about upcoming products from LucidLogix, MSI (GUS II) and Village Instruments (ViDock), but none of these seem to be available to market. I also realize that there are a lot of docks that could be used with a PCIe to Thunderbolt adapter, but that just seems like a costly pain.
    Any good solutions out there?

You should check out the Silverstone T004. It can supply up to 450 watts to a graphics card and will cost between $200 and $300. Of, course I'm hoping for the $200 price.
I emailed a Silverstone representative and he said that they're hoping to be able to release it in the first quarter of 2014.

  • Did I fry my video card on my G5 dual 2.7ghz????

I recently bought a new Macpro and a Gefen 2x2 DVI DL KVM switch and I planned to hook up my two 23" Cinema displays to the KVM so I could use my old G5 dual 2.7 machine and the new Macpro with both displays (extended desktop).
I connected the G5 and the two displays to the KVM switch and waited to connect the Macpro until I saw the KVM worked correctly. But the G5 would not get past the grey startup screen, it goes to black and hangs there. Sometimes the screen flashes blue for a second but usually just goes black. It will startup fine with the OSX install CD or if I hold the shift key for safe mode. It will also startup in firewire target mode so I was able to copy everything I needed off of the system drive.
I later found out that I was supposed to buy single link DVI cables since I have 23" displays and not 30" ones that use the dual link cables. So I am convinced that hooking up the KVM with dual link cables caused this problem. I just don't know exactly what the problem is. Since I can start in safe mode or with the OSX CD and the display works (not connected to the KVM anymore) I would think the video card is fine. But maybe it's messed up somehow and that's why it won't start up normally?
Things I have tried is resetting PRAM, reset the Cuda/PMU, formatted and reinstalled tiger with the install CD. And I can still only boot up with the CD or in safe mode. I also ran the hardware test from the CD and everything passed.
Anyone experience anything like this? Should I try a new video card (Radion 9600) for $185 or maybe the card in my G4 dual 1.25 and see if it starts up? Does the G4 use an AGP type card also?

    Hi jdfilms-
For future reference, pulling the card and plugging it back in again is a troubleshooting technique
Your symptom also sounds like what happens when the cable is not firmly attached, so perhaps when you reconnected the cable you corrected that.
Who knows-it works for now and that is what matters.
    Luck-
