Would backing up to Time Capsule slow a computer

My MacBook Pro, with Lion, also set for frequent, automatic backups to a Time Capsule, has become very sluggish. Would the backup settings contribute to this problem?

Backing up over the Ethernet is not practicable as the computer is quite some distance from the Time Capsule where the backups are held.
However, the computer is within a few feet of an Airport Express. Would connecting the computer by Ethernet cable to the Airport Express have the same effect as connecting straight to the Time Capsule by cable?
Thanks.

  • Time Machine system back up to Time Capsule slow!

Having some issues doing a full back up of my MacBook Pro. My old external hard drive was acting strange so I decided to buy a new one. I bought a WD My Book (bad idea) and it didn't seem to like Time Machine - running at 0.1 MB per second (slow!). After 10 hours of it only making it to 4 GB out of 170 MB, I decided to return it and purchased a Time Capsule. Hooked it up last night, but am having issues with it. I woke up to an error message related to an interrupted internet connection. I had it on my existing Telus wireless network, but have now switched it to the Airport network. But Time Machine is also taking a really long time! Same back up speed as the My Book.
My set up: I have a Telus dual modem/router. An Ethernet WAN cable is connected between the modem and Time Capsule. I have my Telus network and Airport Time Capsule Network (ATCN). My ATCN is my primary.
My Mac book is 10.10.2 Yosemite.
Is it common to have a back up speed this slow? My computer is directly beside the capsule, so the connection should be good.

If the TC has the same speed problems as the external drive.. I would suspect this is a local disk problem in your Mac.
What model is it and what size and type of hard disk.. plus how old?
We always encourage people to do the first backup to the TC over ethernet not wireless.
So please plug your Mac into the TC with ethernet.. if your Mac doesn't have ethernet port buy the Thunderbolt to ethernet adapter.. $35 as the most worthwhile purchase you ever made.
Make sure for Yosemite you set IPv6 to link local only in the ethernet local setup.
Make sure you have wireless turned OFF in the computer.
Try again.. if it is still slow do a verify of the local hard disk as it maybe corrupted.

  • Time machine back up on time capsule never stop

time machine back up on time capsule never stop.

You need to do a bit of troubleshooting.. and it isn't an easy one to solve.
TM could be stuck on a corrupted file..
It could be slow due to network issues.. wireless is terrible.. use ethernet if at all possible.
    Is there an error message??
    Look at Pondini.. http://pondini.org/TM/Troubleshooting.html
You need to load the widget A1.
Verify both the source and backup sparsebundle. A5
Look at some of the reasons he gives for over long backups.
    Look at section D.
I would also need to have more info. Did this just start when you upgraded the TC firmware that was recently released.. if so expect issues.
Are you running Mountain Lion.. expect issues??
To help further we need more info.

  • Backing up a time capsules to a remote device across internet?

    Hi
has anyone any experience of backing up the time capsule (backup and NAS) over the Internet to a remote device (either a machine, NAS or another time capsule)?
I'm trying to do a home (cheap) version of colocating the time capsule (primary location my place, secondary location/back up location my parents).
Just wondering if there is any advice since most discussions seem to centre around the archive feature via the USB port which does not help since I need to remember to take it off site!
    Any suggestions would be great
    Thanks

The only thing I've done with a Time Capsule over the Internet is to copy individual files.  It takes a long time.  I'd expect an attempt to copy a lot more would take an unacceptably long time.

  • How can I back up my time capsule contents to a different hard drive?

I want to back up my time capsule to a different hard drive so I have that extra layer of safety

There are a few ways to do this but none good.
Airport utility will do an archive of the disk.. just open to the disk tab and click archive. The target is USB drive connected to the machine. But it can only do full backup.. no incremental.
You can backup over network but not using Time Machine.. Carbon Copy Cloner is a $40 software that is well worth it. Super slow though doing this.
I recommend you backup using CCC direct from the computer to the target.. otherwise you can be backing up the same problem.

  • Time Capsule slow in Lion and errors

    hello --
ever since upgrading to lion i am having a lot of problems with my time capsule. it is running extremely slow, while before it was perfectly acceptable over wifi. eventually i installed the time capsule buddy widget and noticed the error below repeatedly occuring (in bold). i also noticed that all of a sudden it requires 1.89 GB to backup ( !!! ) in the last line, something that never was an issue before. have others encountered similar issues?
    thank you in advance.

A: Time Capsule slow in Lion and errors

Same problem here - slow backing up to my Time Capsule. Today I had some trouble after booting my MacBook Pro. Finder got stuck and after some restarts Spotlight re-indexed and everything seems fine. And now backing up is much faster. I used to have a lot of time waiting for indexing. But I still get this error message:
2012-08-26 21:51:49,984 com.apple.backupd: Failed to move /Volumes/Data/Pärs MacBook Pro 111026.sparsebundle to file://localhost/Volumes/Data/P%C3%A4rs%20MacBook%20Pro%20111026.sparsebundle/ error Error Domain=NSCocoaErrorDomain Code=516 "“Pärs MacBook Pro 111026” couldn’t be moved to “Data” because an item with the same name already exists." But it seems that everything is working fine. It's backing up and I am able to restore files via Time Machine.
Should I worry?
Any clues?

  • Wirelessly backing up without Time Capsule?

I read that it's possible to wirelessly back up without Time Capsule as long as the external drive is connected to another Mac. Can anyone  help please?

    1. You can do what you are now doing. You could transfer files via your home network using File Sharing.
    2. Partitioning is done using Disk Utility. See:
To resize the drive do the following:
    1. Open Disk Utility and select the drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list.
    2. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window. You should see the graphical sizing window showing the existing partitions. A portion may appear as a blue rectangle representing the used space on a partition.
    3. In the lower right corner of the sizing rectangle for each partition is a resizing gadget. Select it with the mouse and move the bottom of the rectangle upwards until you have reduced the existing partition enough to create the desired new volume's size. The space below the resized partition will appear gray. Click on the Apply button and wait until the process has completed.  (Note: You can only make a partition smaller in order to create new free space.)
    4. Click on the [+] button below the sizing window to add a new partition in the gray space you freed up. Give the new volume a name, if you wish, then click on the Apply button. Wait until the process has completed.
You should now have a new volume on the drive.
It would be wise to have a backup of your current system as resizing is not necessarily free of risk for data loss.  Your drive must have sufficient contiguous free space for this process to work.
    4. This can be done as you are now doing it. You can share the backup drive from the desktop computer if you have a home network. Select the drive. Press COMMAND-I to open the Get Info window. Check the box labeled "Shared." Now open Sharing preferences and check the box, "File Sharing." If the shared drive is not in the list then use the Add [+] button and add the drive to the list. On the other computer you should see your desktop now listed in the Finder's sidebar under Servers. Click on the desktop name then click on the Connect As link in the upper right. Log in as a registered user using your admin account on the desktop and enter your admin password on the desktop account. You should now see an array of folders you can access including the shared drive. Double-click on it and it will mount on the Desktop. You can now use it like any other drive. For more help with this process select Mac Help from the Finder's Help menu and search for "sharing."
Now, you can use a lot of different software for doing backups, syncs, etc. Here are a few:
    Backup Software Recommendations
    Carbon Copy Cloner
    Data Backup
    Deja Vu
    Silver Keeper
    Super Flexible File Synchronizer
    Synchronize Pro! X
    Synk Pro
    Synk Standard
    Tri-Backup
Others may be found at VersionTracker or MacUpdate.
Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQ on backup and restore.  Also read How to Back Up and Restore Your Files.
All of the above can use a networked drive as a source or destination for backing up or syncing files.

  • HT1449 I moved my itunes library to the time capsule. Everytime I put the computer to sleep, I have to change the location back to the time capsule. I cannot get the iTunes library to stay located in the time capsule.

My itunes library does not stay in its new location in the time capsule. Every time I put the computer to sleep or leave it alone for awhile, the itunes location goes back to the original location in the macbook. Then I have to change the location back to the time capsule and wait for it to reorganize all the files again. So the question is how to keep my itunes in its new location the time capsule?

    Welcome to the discussion area!
+Can someone please provide a definite answer, or at least warn against using the TC as a shared media device on a network. The whole point of getting such a device is to be able to offload large multimedia libraries from the laptops, yet access a shared library when networked. N'est ce pas?+
We're all users here...not pros...so you'll get few definitive answers on a forum with varying opinions about almost every subject.
My opinion would be this: Apple designed the Time Capsule for Time Machine to automatically backup all the files on your Mac and other Macs in the household on a regular basis and provide a way to retrieve a file that had been deleted recently by mistake. It's a pretty good router as well.
If you check the info about the Time Capsule on Apple's site, the main features mentioned are backup of your Macs and a dual band wireless network capability.
The Time Capsule was never designed to be a media server housing audio, video and other multi-media files and has never been promoted as such. Nevertheless, some users seem to have adopted the stance that this should be one of the benefits of the device, if not a main feature.
There may be a need for media server type device, but the Time Capsule, at least at this time, is not the answer. If you feel otherwise, you might want to speak directly to Apple and let them know via Time Capsule Feedback.

  • How do i pause a back up on time capsule?

How do i pause a back up on time capsule?
I really need help. I have to take my computer out in an hour and my back up is only 13.30 GB done and its been 4 hours. I thought it would be enough time but it isn't. Is there a way to pause the back up and continue later on?
Please help asap Thank you very much

There is info here on reconnecting to a backup.
    B6 http://pondini.org/TM/Troubleshooting.html
BTW although it might show it needs to create a new backup.. until the actual point that it starts.. TM will then reconnect to the old backup. It is generally impossible to know what the outcome will be until the backup actually begins. Fun eh!!

  • Do applications get backed up on time capsule

do applications get backed up on time capsule

do applications get backed up on time capsule
Everything* is backed up.....unless you specify otherwise.
The idea is that if the hard drive on your Mac failed tomorrow, you would be able to install a new hard drive on the Mac and then restore everything from Time Machine, so your computer would look exactly the same as it did today.
*Except some cache files that are not needed for restoration.

  • Time machine has stopped backing up to time capsule. message is that sparse bundle is in use

Time machine suddenly stopped backing up to time capsule returning this message:
The backup disk image “/Volumes/Data-1/xxnymacbooknamexx MacBook.sparsebundle” is already in use.

Complex procedure that will almost always solve this bug:
Pull the power cord from the back of the Time Capsule
    Count to ten
Plug the power cord back into the back of the Time Capsule
Wait a few minutes, then try a backup again.

  • Time Machine stalls when trying to back up to Time Capsule or an external hard drive.

TIme Machine stalls when trying to back up to Time Capsule or an external hard drive.  Time Machine shows a message such as "Backing up 4MB of 9.00GB" but nothing happens for hours.

Are you really running 10.6.4 OS?
What model TC and what firmware?
    Wireless or wired?
    How is the TC setup?
If TM can work to neither a TC or external hard disk it is more likely the computer is faulty hard disk..
Do a verify of the disk.
    See A5 here.

Use the manual methods.. but it is possible for TM to wipe the old files in trying to fit into the space.
Try Q16.. but read all the section 14-17
