Would cydia be better with pacman than apt?

I was watching cydia do an install on my phone today using apt, and i feel like it could be so much faster. I was wondering what your opinions would be, firstly whether it would actually be possible, and then whether it would be faster or better in any way? This includes the possibility of using powerpill for the downloads.

Would it be possible?   Maybe...
Would it be faster?  Maybe...
Is it worth it?  No...

Hello, I am interested in buying this week of a mac mini 2011 withintel graphics HD3000 but I'm not sure it looks good with my Samsung SyncMaster 933HD monitor. How would it look better.... with the hdmi-dvi connection built in, buying a HDMI 1.3 cable and HDMI-making or buying an adapter hdmi display port - vga and connected through the port thunderbolt
    Thanks

I originally set up my mini with the included HDMI -> DVI adaptor to connect to a Sycmaster monitor. The graphics were very good.

  • Raw conversion to JPG better with DPP than ARC 5.X

I started testing conversion from raw to jpg with Canon's Digital Photo Professional and ARC 5.x (CS4) and noticed a much better conversion with DPP. At low ISOs does I don't see much difference, however at 800+ it is very noticeable. I hate to give up the work flow of Bridge and ACR and go back to using DPP. Is there anything that can be done to improve this?

Quoting from an old post of mine, with apologies to all who have read it before:
This has been covered ad nauseam here. Please do a forum search for more details.
Camera manufacturers, Canon and Nikon in particular, perform in-camera RAW to JPEG conversions designed to generate the over-saturated, over-contrasty and over-sharpened images that appeal to most amateurs.
Their stand-alone RAW conversion software also performs the same conversion to your RAW images.
Noise is also hidden by compressing the shadows so you don't see much of the noise inherent in the image.
Adobe Camera Raw, ACR, on the other hand, comes with default settings designed to give you the most detail possible
(even if this sometimes means revealing some of the noise hidden by the camera manufacturers in their RAW conversion software), as well as the most natural images.
That being said, you can calibrate your camera to ACR and come up with your own settings to produce exactly what you want, including the JPEG-look of the camera manufacturer, and save that as your profile.
The key is to learn how to use ACR properly and to calibrate your camera to ACR.
The camera calibration refines the settings by letting you adjust for the exact sensor response of your individual camera unit rather than the average of a sampling of such unites provided by Adobe.
The ACR defaults are nothing more than a suggested starting point.
The color temperature won't necessarily match either.

  • HV10 imports better with macbook than macbook pro

I want to upgrade powerbook with goal of importing from canon HV10 to imovie monitoring in real time. I have tried HV10 at store in various machines and find that cannot import to imovie 8 with top end macbook pro in real time, but can import to imovie 6 in real time with 2.16 macbook. Is this a function of the two different versions of imovie, or is there something about macbook pro architecture that will not allow realtime imports from my videocamera?

.. Is this a function of the two different versions of imovie ..
    yes.
iM08 not only imports (which is done in realtime), but also has to create 'on the fly' a preview/thumbnail movie of that import, for usage as reference in editing, realtime 'skimming' etc. ... which needs some extra time ...

If I host with Business Catalyst, will search engines fine me any "better" or Worse than go daddy?
I am new to Muse and love it! Not sure if the hosting site matters one way or the other.

Liam has some great points. Some other things to consider is that google (just talking one search engine at the moment) more than likely know what a BC site looks like and is made of and would know the best ways to index it assuming you use some of the features of BC and not just straight up HTML.
Godaddy is straight up HTML so as far as indexing goes I think BC has an advantage as it is a known system much like wordpress.
As far as IP blocks, bad neighbours, etc only google will know that information and it's not easy to say which is better.
For example if someone on BC spam's there website everywhere or engages in dodgy SEO practises, spambots etc. Their site is going to be pushed down, if you happen to be on the same IP or close to that site you will be in a "bad neighbourhood" and it may affect your site in the short term. This is the case for ANY hosting solution, so take it all with a gain of salt.

Thank you for your quick response. I can then use a ZIP drive for data storage. I want to keep as much of my hard drive free of data as possible.

  • Is quality better with software for converting VHS to DVD than using an actual converter?

Is quality better with software for converting VHS to DVD than using an actual converter?

Not sure what you mean by "actual converter".
If you mean if you just played a VHS tape to a DVD recorder and recorded like that... You will get close to the quality of the VHS.
If you have a good capture software and hardware you might be able to clean the video and audio up. But VHS is pretty limited in quality.

Video is the magic word for fast CPUs, large screens, maximum RAM and large HHDs.  Ditto what eww says and do not order RAM and HDD upgrades through Apple.  It is much, much less expensive through third party vendors.
    Ciao.
I do some video work myself so I have an understanding of your needs.

  • Sun's JVM works better with AMD or Intel?

    Hi,
I would appreciate if someone lets me know about
what eventually works better or more friendly with Sun's JVM (JIT): the AMD CPUs or the Intel ones.
It's a complex issue, I understand it, but I'd be glad to read some random opinions as anyway.
It just seems to me that Sun's Java works (a bit) better with AMD, I tried an app
on a x64 AMD of 1.8 Ghz and there was practically no difference
in startup time (and execution) than a Pentium D at 3.4 Ghz (which has 2 cores) -
I expected to see like a double increase in performance or so (yes - it doesn't only depend on the CPU).
From the JavaOne 2008 conference (which I watched over the web) I have the impression that AMD is
(much) more commited to improve the JVM to work fast with its chips than Intel (Intel was generally praising
how Sun started selling servers with Intel chips).
A link to an article/webcast/blog/analysis would be just great.
    Thanks in advance.

The more apt comparison would be with Woodcrest Xeons and later models. These should be roughly on par with AMD CPUs. There will be significant differences for some concurrent loads, but I doubt there's a consistent pattern where one CPU vendor is faster than the other.

  • Questions about my library just moved to NAS.  Download errors.  Would USB be better?

Thanks for reading.  My situation is that my itunes library is running about 500gb and I needed to get it off my imac.  I bought a 2TB NAS and copied the entire library folder to that drive and changed itunes to go there.
What I'm finding is that downloading daily podcasts is a chore.  It's real slow.  I had to turn off simultaneous downloads and allow only a single download at a time.  Otherwise it would certainly beach ball.
Also, buying anything from itunes seems to result in a "network reset" error and I have to sit there and click "resume" 2 or 3 times.
I'm wondering if I've done something wrong?
Would it be better if I spring for a 2.0 USB drive and keep it connected to my imac that way rather than going through the servers where the NAS is connected in the house?
I also use this library to feed the apple TV that we use a lot.
    Thanks.

I have a post on reorganizing things before attempting to move them from one computer to another which runs as follows:
    Make a split library portable
Here are the typical layouts for the iTunes folders:
In the layout above right, with the media folder (everything in the red box) inside the library folder, the library is considered to be portable. A portable library can be moved from one path to another without breaking the links from the library to the media, and being self-contained it is much easier to backup and restore. (You do backup, don't you?).
You can rearrange things to make a split library portable by taking a number of small steps which don't break the library.
Before you start any media files that are outside of the media folder will need to be consolidated. If the library is in the old style layout then it should be upgraded to iTunes Media Organization (Library > Organize Library > Rearrange files in the folder <Media Folder>) to ensure that iPod Games, Mobile Applications etc. are brought inside the media folder, otherwise the links to these won't survive changes in the path of the library.
    The basic non-fatal manipulations are:
You can create or connect to an alternate set of library files by holding down Shift (Win) or Option (Mac) when starting iTunes. (Note iTunes will continue to use this library until you use the same method again.)
You can move the library files to a new location and connect to it there as long as the media stays put.
You can move the library files and the media together if the media folder is a direct subfolder of the library folder.
If you have already moved/copied the media content from a subfolder of the library folder to a different location then you only need to copy the library files for it to appear as if you have moved the entire library in the way allowed above. I.e. just copy the library files into the parent folder of the media folder.
You can rename the media folder to iTunes Media (if it isn't already) if the media folder is inside the library folder.
iTunes uses the name of the folder holding the library files as the window title. Having made a library "portable" you may need to take a final step of renaming the library folder to iTunes or, if the library files have ended up at the root of a drive, moving all of the library files and content folders into a new folder called iTunes.
IMPORTANT: After each change you need to open, test and close the relevant library before attempting another change. If a change broke the library, undo it or revert to using the previous set of library files.
In essence all you need to do to join up a split library and make it portable is copy the library files into the parent folder of the media folder on the external/secondary drive and use the hold-down-shift/option-when-starting-iTunes method to connect to it. Other manipulations may be required to normalize the library so that the library and media folders have standard names.
In your case I'm suggesting that you can use 2. to relocate your library files to a faster internal drive while leaving the media on the NAS (splitting the library), and that you would then use 4. to join your split library back together again before attempting to move it to a different drive.
After using 2. you would need to make sure that under iTunes Preferences > Advanced the media folder was pointed to iTunes Media on the NAS. There is also an issue with such split libraries that iTunes can sometimes reset the media folder if the NAS/external appears to be offline when iTUnes starts up.

  • Is there a way to open CSV files with more than 255 columns?

I have a CSV file with more than 255 columns of data.  It's a fairly standard export of social media data that shows volume of posts by day for the past year, from which I can analyze the data and publish customized charts. Very easy in Excel but I'm hitting the Numbers limit of 255 columns per table. Is there a way to work around the limitation? Perhaps splitting the CSV in two? The data shows up in the CSV file when I open via TextEdit, so it's there. Just can't access it in Numbers. And it's not very usable/useful for me in TextEdit.
    Regards,
    Tim

You might be better off with Excel. Even if you could find a way to easily split the CSV file into two tables, it would be two tables when you want only one.  You said you want to make charts from this data.  While a series on a chart can be constructed from data in two different tables, to do so takes a few extra steps for each series on the chart.
For a test to see if you want to proceed, make two small tables with data spanning the tables and make a chart from that data.  Make the chart the normal way using the data in the first table then repeat the following steps for each series
Select the series in the chart
    Go to Format sidebar
    Click in the "Value" box
Add a comma then select the data for this series from the second chart
    Press Return
If there is an easier way to do this, maybe someone else will chime in with that info.

  • Which laptop should I buy that would run AE better?

I'm debating between two HP laptops. I like the one better due to it's smaller size and higher resolution, but i'm a little worried that the i5 won't handle as well as I'd like.
The one i think I want to buy: http://www.amazon.com/HP-dm4-3090se-14-0-Inch-Screen-Laptop/dp/B006OEL9GU
PROS: 1600 x 900 resolution, no dedicated graphics card = good battery life, 32GB SSD Drive, light weight + portable
However, would I be better off getting http://www.amazon.com/Hewlett-Packard-BrightView-Fingerprint-SuperMulti/dp/B004S4DVTQ/ref= sr_1_3?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1331255057&sr=1-3 with the i7 processor and dedicated graphics? Downside is the resolution for the 15.6 inch screen is 1366 x 768, which would be really annoying to work with, correct?
Keep in mind, I plan on upgrading either of the laptops to 8GB RAM anyway, seeing as a stick of 4GB is like $20 on newegg. Would the i5 really be a killer in my performance? the first laptop also has a 32GB SSD, used mainly for OS and cache, i'm not sure if it would even be noticed by AE. If I went with somethign else, i'd purchase a mommentus XT (Solid state hybrid drive) anyway.
If any of you guys have any better suggestions for an ideal, travel friendly (I'd bring it to college classes + trips) AE-powered laptop for less than $1000, do share. I've spent a good couple hours trying to find the best investment.
    Thanks a ton!

You need a dedicated graphics card and soon-ish you will need it even more... Those intel graphics are simply useless and too much trouble. That doesn't mean you should go with the secohnd machine, though. The system specs for the screen res do not even qualify to install, if I'm not mistaken... The processor is a non-issue. Even an i3 will be reasonably fast enough for many tasks and with so little RAM you won't be able to use MP rendering, anyway. Do a little more research and find a different model.

  • Just how much better is nattres than compressor in converting pal - NTSC?

I am on the verge of buying the Nattres plugin but before i do i would like to know how much better it is than compressor. I did some test with compressor and the results are unacceptable. I have to send some stock footage to America from here in South Africa. The footage im trying to convert is half Betacam half DVCPROHD.
    Thanks
    Andre
I have posted this thread in the compressor forum but didnt quite get the answer i was looking for, although it was helpful

    I don't think Natress is over $75.
Natress is the only plug-in or software that has given us consistent results.
It also does PAL to NTSC or NTSC to PAL.
Rendering can take a while depending on the length of your sequence.
Edit in PAL and when you are done duplicate your sequence and make an NTSC version. You can then avoid having to convert footage that doesn't end up in your final sequence.
