Would Grid Control be able to initiate a switchover ?

Hi,
I want to install and use 10g Grid Control. I have a Dataguard Configuration with an primary and a standby physical, managed by a Data Guard Manager.
I would like to know if Grid Control would be able to make a switchover to the standby if the primary fails unexpectedly.
Regards,
Christian.

  • 10gR2 Grid Control with previous Agents?

I have 10gR2 Grid Control installed on a Linux Server. I want to use it to create a DataGuard standby database. The issue is that the primary database is 10gR2 on a HP-UX server using ASM and the standby database will also be 10gR2 on a HP-UX server using ASM. Will the 10gR2 Linux Grid Control be able to handle this since the agent on the primary will be 10.1.0.4? Note: 10gR2 is available for HP-UX but 10gR2 Grid Control is not yet available so that is why I have 10.1.0.4 agent.

Yes , it is able to handle

  • Grid Control and Standby Database

I have a (single node) physical standby server for a two node RAC Primary.
I can view the standby server in OEM ( java tool).
How do I add the standby db in my Grid Control ( 10.2.0.4.0 )
    regards,Lily

    Thanks for the reply.
Yes I have grid agent running on the standby node. I have also installed 'yast rpms' and the grid control is able to see the host under the 'target' tab of grid control.
While trying to discover the standby database, the automatic target discover fails.
Then I did the 'manually add', and it complains 'failed to connect'.
I believe, this is mainly because the STANDBY database is in 'MOUNT' state and I am using 'dbsnmp' to connect ot the grid control ( my grid control is configured to register new database as 'dbsnmp').

  • 12C Grid Control Backwards Capablity

Does anyone know if 12c grid control is able to support the 11g R1 microsoft windows server 2008 x64 Oracle database?

Once the agent for windows is released there will be more details about what specific versions of Windows and Databases are supported. Release Schedule of Current Enterprise Manager Releases and Patch Sets (Doc ID 793512.1)

  • Not able to generate DDL on new install of OEM Grid Control 10.2.0.5

I upgraded grid control to 10.2.0.5 and can not get it to generate DDL.
I click generate ddl and get the basic message 'Generate DDL has been submitted successfully. It could take a while to complete if the baseline version contains a large number of objects.'
And it says that it is being generated in the DDL column but if you either let it sit there or click the refresh button, it will say Not Generated.
Has anyone come across this and found a solution?
    This is on windows.

Try this on your versionof 10.2.0.5:
On the Dictionary Baseline Objects page,
    1. Select all the objects in Non-Schema Object Types
    2. Select objects types and the schemas to include
    3. Select all the objects in Object Types
    4. Add your schemas
    This will succesfullly run.
Now click on the Generated DDL and it will initially say 'Being Generated' in the DDL column.
Either let it sit there or click the Refresh button and the status in the DDL column is now 'Not Generated'.

  • OEM GRID CONTROL REMOTE INSTALLATION

    Hello Good People,
I am trying to install OEM GRID CONTROL. I have a two RAC node (AIX 5L). I don't have acces to the server so my only option is remote installation.
I was able to ftp the file into a directory on the server but it will not unzip, (error: couldn't find 10g.zp or 10g.ZIP). I uploaded the file as binary.
Okay, I will like to install from my laptop, (xp) using the DVD that I have. I went through the documentation steps below:
    1. Make sure that the remote access software is installed and running on the remote and local computers.
    2. On the local computer, share the DVD drive.
    3. On the remote computer, map a drive letter to the shared DVD drive. You would use the remote access software to do this on the remote computer.
Through the remote access software, run Oracle Universal Installer on the remote computer. You access Oracle Universal Installer from the shared DVD drive.
I am confuse with step 2 downward. How can I map a drive in UNIX or why should I? I am connected to the sever by Telnet.
Any direction or suggestion will be appreciated. Please note that all I want is to remotely install GRID CONTROL on my server from the DVD that I have.
    Thanks for your help.......

Based on further researched I discovered that the problem is due to the fact that I don't have an X-Window client install on my local machine. I just install a free trial version (30days). OUI finally started and went through the various checks. Although, the check passed I couldn't continue. It is saying missing some files. I will post the erros messages from the log in a while.
    Thanks

  • Configuring Grid Control on 10g R2

    Hi
Current Envt : Oracle 8.1.7/Win NT.
We are going migrate to 10g R2 ,
In the current 8i environment, we have a EM database which manages RMAN backups of a couple of Other databases.
And we monitor these backup jobs through this Enterprise Manager 2.2.
Also, using this OEM 2.2, iam able to monitor all the existing databases .
    Coming to 10g R2 (10.2.0.1)
i realized that Enterpise Manager (web based) is only for a single instance.
And i read some where that 10g Grid Control would be helpful for multiple databases.
and how to access the Grid Control..and configure multiple databases on it.
Currently, i installed Grid Control 10.1.0.5 by giving the path as
    E:\app\oracle\product\10.2\em_1
However, iam not able to figure as how to bring up the Grid Control.
I wanted to know if someone can provide the steps on how to install (if i have been doing anything wrong ?
Whether while installing i have to give the same $ORACLE_HOME as with the database ?
I also tried the same way as regular DBcosole ie., http://localhost:port/em
In addition, while creating the DB using DBCA, i selected the Grid Control Option.
Please suggest as how to proceed further.
    Thanx

    See comments below:
    Coming to 10g R2 (10.2.0.1)
i realized that Enterpise Manager (web based) is only

and how to access the Grid Control..and configure

Currently, i installed Grid Control 10.1.0.5 by
    giving the path as
E:\app\oracle\product\10.2\em_1Install Grid Control on a separate server preferably one dedicated to management only. Then on each database server, you'll need to install an agent for OMS to talk to the target database.
However, iam not able to figure as how to bring up
    the Grid Control.
I wanted to know if someone can provide the steps on
how to install (if i have been doing anything wrong

I also tried the same way as regular DBcosole ie.,
    http://localhost:port/em
You probably didn't install the DBconsole.

In addition, while creating the DB using DBCA, i
    selected the Grid Control Option.
For this option to work, you need to have Grid Control operational. First start with selecting only DBConsole...this way you can manage your database. After you get Grid Control installed and the agent is working properly, you can stop the DBConsole service and use Grid Control to manage your target database.

  • Patching Grid Control OMS and Agent to 10.2.0.5 issue

    Oracle 11gR1 RHEL5 - Grid Control 10.2.0.5
    Hi All,
I have been stuck on this issue for over a month (was relying on Oracle supports help and they just would not reply) and I can't figure it out. Basically, what happened is that my 10.2.0.5 patch set failed partiallty when I was applying it to the OMS. Here is what is going on right now:
    Database Repository (EMREP) - 11gR1 (11.1.0.6) - /opt/app/oracle/product/11.1.0/db_1
    OMS - 10.2.0.5 - /opt/app/oracle/product/10.2.0/grid_1/oms10g
    Agent - 10.2.0.5 - /opt/app/oracle/product/10.2.0/grid_1/agent10g
When I was almost done with the 10.2.0.5 patch on the OMS, OUI gave me the following error:

    failures.
*2. Fix the errors causing these failures.*
*3. Select the failed assistants and click the 'Retry' button to retry them*

  • Can Grid Control 10gR2 create a standby database when primary db uses ASM?

Does anyone know if Grid Control 10gR2 will be able to create a standby database when the primary database uses ASM for data files, redo log files, and archive log files but the standby database will use mounted disks? If it can, would it matter that the primary db will be a RAC cluster and the standby will be a single instance db?

I appreciate your reply and hope you are correct. Have you had a look at the 10gR2 Grid Control to confirm this or are you only going on published statements? The reason I ask is because previous versions of Grid Control claimed to support ASM but they would only allow you to work with them AFTER you had created a standby database manually but you couldn't actually use Grid Control to create a standby database from a primary database that had its log files on ASM disks.

  • Great leap backwards in Grid Control functionality.

Unfortunately I find myself using a newer version of Grid Control / OEM that REQUIRES use of the Flash plugin. You don't have a choice. So I use Flash reluctantly, the graphs appear, functionality appears just fine until I right click on the legend of a performance graph to try to drill down using "open in new tab" and instead I get the previously-mentioned little menu about "print/whatever/about Flash player".
What an annoying leap backwards in functionality. You can't leave the existing window open and open a new tab or window, instead you're allowed to replace the current screen with the drilldown screen. And then after drilldown, at the top of the new screen where hopefully there would be an HTML link that would allow me to at least try to open the previous window ( Top Activity ), there is no such link.
What a foolish choice to require the use of Flash. What an annoying downgrade of functionality. Now I can smoothly drag a gray box back and forth on the screen to highlight the time slice I'm interested in, but I can't do the things I really would like to do like drilldown while retaining the original window, save a single graph to a graphics file to attach to a mail message, etc.
I used to be able to save performance graphs and include them as attachments in email. Now instead with Flash I can "print" them to a file - unfortunately a) it's gray scale not color and b) it only shows the left half of the graph and c) it saves all of the graphs on the page when usually I'm only interested in one graph.
Guess I got spoiled by not having to use flash. I wonder how long we'll have to wait for Flash to include startling new right-click functionality like being able to print a single graph or have links on the plugins behave like actual URLs - instead of giving us a Print/Settings/About Flash 9 menu . Settings menu actually includes the remarkable privacy settings menu with which you can allow the remote computer to access your camera and microphone, or the Local Storage menu where you get to specify how much information the grid control server can store on your computer. I have been waiting for those functions with bated breath, after all who needs to open another window with useful data when it's possible to provide someone on a remote computer to access your computer's accessories.

I have modified my /etc/hosts file and the problem is solved.
and I don't think the localhost.domain line should be commented.
if so, the listener can't start successfully.
    anyway. thanks for you reply.

  • Database limits for Grid control repository?

Document "Oracle® Database Licensing Information / 10g Release 2 (10.2)" [Part Number B14199-10] discusses the restricted use license of database for grid control repository and rman repository use.
nfrastructure Repository Databases A separate Oracle Database can be installed and used as a Recovery Manager (RMAN) repository without additional license requirements, provided that all the Oracle databases managed in this repository are correctly licensed. This repository database may also be used for the Oracle Enterprise Grid Control repository. It may not be used or deployed for other uses.
A separate Oracle Database can be installed and used as a Oracle Enterprise Manager Grid Control (OEM Grid Control) repository without additional license requirements, provided that all the targets (databases, applications, and so forth) managed in this repository are correctly licensed. This database may also be used for the RMAN repository. It may not be used or deployed for other uses.
There is no discussion of licensing requirements for options of the database (RAC, partitioning, etc) when the database stays within these repository use restrictions. Therefore it is unclear whether the Grid Control can be configured to provide appropriate monitoring without additional licenses.

This is the reply I received from release
    management:
If they have deployed an EE edition of the database
as an OEM repository, and then want to protect that
with RAC or Data Guard, or make more Secure with ASO
or Database Vault, or indeed get any of the
additional benefits any of the options provide, then
they will need to license the option.
Let me know if that is still not clear, and I'll go
    back again.Thanks.
There is a minor inconsistency in their response ... they say "if deployed on EE". However, as far as I know OEM repository required VPD, which is available only on Enterprise Edition (see http://download-east.oracle.com/docs/cd/B16240_01/doc/em.102/e10953/pre-installation_req.htm#CHDGIEAD)
However, it is quite clear that 'they' are telling us that the RAC option is not inherent in the "Special Use Licensing" as described http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/B19306_01/license.102/b14199/editions.htm#CJAHFHBJ .
The implication (not necessarily a topic for this forum) is that the OEM is not guaranteed to be able to provide basic monitoring and reporting functionality without additional license fees to make OEM more highly available than the targets being monitored.
It would be nice to have the information about which Oracle products (database and app server) have included licenses with a basic Grid Control install and which require additional licenses as part of Chapter 1 of http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/B19306_01/license.102/b40010/toc.htm (That document goes into excruciating detail about the extra packs, but ignores the basics.)
For that matter, since OEM Grid Control can not be purchased, it would be nice to have a list of products that provide license to install Grid Control, again in Chapter 1 of the Grid Control Licensing document listed above.
I appreciate your time in having dug into this.

  • OMS unable to reach host in 10g grid control

    Greetings Gurus:
I installed oracle 10g grid control r2 and agent on a windows xp machine. on another windows xp machine i installed the agent. i am able to see the host in grid control on the machine with the grid control installed but cannot see the remote machine with only the agent installed. i have reloaded and uploaded, started and stopped the agent using emctl and opmnctl without any issues(this is on the remote machine) but still cannot see the remote host. when i try to secure the agent on the remote machine i get the following:
Requesting an HTTPS Upload URL from the OMS...   Failed.
The OMS is not set up for Enterprise Manager Security.
I am fairly new at using grid control and standby database and have had a torrid time trying to fix this problem. your assistance would be greatly appreciated

    *1. Stop dbconsole*
    emctl stop agent
    OR
    emctl stop dbconsole
    *2. Secure it*
    emctl secure dbconsole sysman_pwd agent_reg_pwd
    *3. Start dbconsole*
    emctl start dbconsole
*4. After some time when the dbconsole starts check the status*

  • Data Guard - Grid Control - Standby database

    Heys,
now I have to RAC Clusters. The next step would be to setup a standby database to prepare a graceful switchover.
But what are the next steps ?
I am currently installing GridControl on a seperate host with the option: Enterprise Manager10g Grid Control Using an Existing Database
    The installation is still running....
What are the steps ? Any documentation ? Any tutorials ?
Do I need to install agents on each client in the cluster ?
What about the name resolution ?
    Any listener configuration necessary ?
Is the configuration done via data guard command line ?
    Christian

Bear in mind that the standby creation wizard in Grid Control will only create a non-RAC standby. Once you get to Grid Control 10.2.0.5 and your databases are in 11g you will be able to use the Grid Control convert to RAC wizard on your standby. Prior to that you will have to convert the standby to RAC manually or follow the above mentioned paper and create the standby by hand and then import it into Grid Control.

  • How to monitor RAC services and nodeapps in Grid Control

    Hi,
I have created a number of RAC service names such as GL on a 2-node RAC and would like to use Grid control 10.2.0.2 to monitor the availability of those services and nodeapps. I was not able to find anything in Grid Control that would allow me to configure that. What are being monitored now are the listeners, database instances and nodes. Would it be possible to monitor more than just the RAC listeners, instances and nodes?
    thanks.

I don´t think that there is an out-of-the-box metric. However, CRS monitors your services and Grid Control monitors CRS errors. If you need more granular monitoring, I have 2 suggestions:
    1) user callouts:
    2) extending oracle enterprise manager
I have written a paper on how to extend oem at [http://www.ora-solutions.net/web/papers/]
"Extending Oracle Enterprise Manager to collect HP-UX glance data"
You can follow the instructions to build a new target type called "RAC_SERVICE" and add your serivces as targets, e.g. S_BATCH, S_ONLINE, S_HR.
    Best regards,

  • Version of agents that can be deployed for grid control 10.1.0.2 on Win2k

We have the 10.1.0.2 grid control installed on a AIX 5.2 server.
We would like to manage targets residing on windows 2000 platforms with this grid control installation.
I would like to understand which version of agent should we be installing on the windows platforms, for them to be managed by the grid control. Does the version of the agent have to be the same as the grid control installation?

Thanks for the update. I checked the other thread, but my question was more about exact 10g versions of the agent and the grid console.
I want to know if a 10.1.0.4 or 10.1.0.3 agent will be able to talk to a 10.1.0.2 grid console.
I had one more question about the downloadable 10g agent for Windows 2000. As of now under http://www.oracle.com/technology/software/products/oem/htdocs/agentsoft.html
I see the downloadable agent only for Windows NT. Does this work for Windows 2000 as well.
I would appreciate if anyone could throw a light on this.
