Would I be better off mixing memory modules in my iMac rather than just having 1GB unused?

I have a late 2006 20-inch iMac that currently has two 1GB 200-pin PC2-5300 (667MHz) DDR2 SO-DIMM modules installed. I recently bought two 2GB modules of the same type (different brand). Since I also have a macbook that uses the same type of memory (but 1GB total), I want to know how I can get the most speed with the momory I have for both computers (ie 4GB in an iMac that only recognizes 3GB and 2GB in the Macbook or 3GB in each). Thanks!

Matching 4GB in that iMac will give you a slight increase in preformance over 3GB.

  • I am running 10.6.8 on an iMac7,1 with 2.4GHz, 4Gb RAM.  Other than usual Apple apps, I also run Microsoft Office for Mac.  Am i better off upgrading to Mountain Lion or Mavericks rather than trying to go to Yosemite ?  Thanks!

I am running Snow Leopard 10.6.8 on an iMac 7,1 system with 2.4GHz processor and 4Gb RAM.   I also use Microsoft Office for Mac.
I am wondering whether i should upgrade to Yosemite or first go to Mountain Lion or Maverics to avoid sluggishness and other potential issues with using Yosemite on this iMac.

i had thought Snow Leopard was no longer supported hence my idea to upgrade.
It isn't being supported any longer.
If you haven't done this you might want to consider doing it for security.

  • Mixing memory modules of different sizes in a Mac Mini

I have a MM Intel Core Duo with a 1.66GHz processor and 512 MB 667 MHz SDRAM. Model Macmini1,1, 32 Bits, SMC Version (system): 1.3f4.
Anybody know if you can mix memory modules in it? I have the standard 256 modules (2) and would take one out and replace it with a 1 GB one. Can this be done?
    Thanks

Yes, you can do this. You will get a slight performance hit on video, but that will be more than offset 99% of the time by the extra RAM reducing overloading of the Virtual Memory system.
However, it is enough work to replace the RAM and RAM is cheap enough, that I'd recommend putting in two matched 1 Gig modules instead.

I want an IPAD that is fast and good for education, so I want to know if getting the IPAD mini is better then getting the IPAD 2 upgraded to IOS6 ,and witch one would I be better off getting.

The iPad mini is basically a smaller iPad 2. However, there are a few differences.

  • Can I mix memory modules?

I have some memory modules left over from various upgrades and I would like to use them to upgrade my daughter's iMac which is a 2.0 GHz machine using 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM PC2-5300. I have 1 Gb of that memory from wife's iMac which is the same model but I also have 1Gb of 800 MHz DDR2 SDRAM 6400 from my own 2.4 GHz iMac. Can I install them together in my daughter's machine? If I can't mix them, will the 800 MHz run in it on it's own and would there be any benefit?
I also have some 667 MHz 5300 from my laptop which appears to be the same as that in the 2.0 GHz iMac. Can anybody confirm that? Finally, is there any risk in trying any of the above?
    Thanks in advance

    Teufelhunden,
Hi I know you're new so let me try to educate you a little. First is trying to ask a question in someone else's thread is considered rude, it's called thread jacking. I'm sure that wasn't your intent though. Next is if you see a green star by a thread that indicates it has been answered so posting a question in a thread that has already been answered probably isn't even going to be looked at.
I would recommend opening your own thread and I'm sure you will get some people more than willing to answer your question. If I see it I'll help you too! If you need assistance on how to create a thread click above where it says "Expanding your Intel-based iMac" and then you will see a link called *Post new Topic*.

  • Mixing memory modules on Westmere

    Dear Hardware gurus,
I have a 12-Cores Westmere. Do you know is it possible to mix different memory modules on it, namely:
    6x1 Gb 1330Mhz
    +
    2x4 Gb 1066Mhz
and if yes, in which configuration?
Thanks a lot for any comment!

    Kappy, thanks for the note.
I am actually going to order some more 1333 modules, but just for the short time I have to work with what I have currently (see my original post).
As I posted above, I tried a bit already to combine the modules and Mac doesn't boot
Can you suggest a configuration, which will work?

  • Mix memory modules

    Hi,
I have two 2 GB memory modules that I pulled from my Mac Mini.
Since they are just sitting around, I am wondering if I add them to my iMac that has two empty slots, will give me any performance boost.
The iMac currently has two 8 GB memory modules.
Adding two the 2 GB would make the total go to 20 GB.
Will this help in any way?
Is there a certain order in which I should install these modules?
    Thanks
    Raj

We cannot say without know the exact model of the Mac Mini. Even though RAM modules may have the same form factor and number of pins, you cannot use RAM rated at a lower speed than that of your iMac's RAM.
    You iMac requires 204-pin PC3-12800 (1600 MHz) DDR3 SO-DIMMs
Late 2012 and newer Mac Minis use the same RAM. If the Mini is older, the RAM will not work.

  • Would I be better off with a 7200rpm HD or a SSHD for Logic?

I'm looking to upgrade the hard drive in my Macbook Pro and I'm curious as to whether an SSHD would be beneficial over a standard hard drive. The two options I'm looking at are either a 7200rpm hard drive or an SSHD hybrid drive that combines an 8GB SSD with a 5400rpm drive.
SSHD's are slightly more expensive and they seem like a good idea but I'm not sure if I'd get the benefit of the small SSD portion for using Logic or if I'd be better off with a 7200rpm drive.
I should add that I also need at least 500GB of storage so I've ruled out SSD's at this point.

I would say that it depends what you're doing, For my audio work i used to run a Mac Pro, then went to an iMac, and now do virtually everything from a Mac book pro with the standard 5400rpm hard drive.  I had plans to put an SSD in there, but i thought i would see how it went first.
I use predominately hardware synths, real guitars and vocals.. The only real sampling software i've used in the past has been Steve slate drums.  Recently i got into Omnisphere..  And i've got to say that i've never once had an issue with the 5400 drive.
On average i would say that i have around 4 guitar tracks, 3 vocal, 3-4 synth and a drum track playing at once, and never experienced a drop out in 18 months (The life of my MBP so far)... Obviously these tracks are spread out into more, but at any one time i can't imagine much more playing simulatenously.
So.. If you're my end of the scale don't go spending out too early.
Take Art's advice too, Firewire is a great option, i use that for video work where the HDD speed has been an issue in the past, and the FW drives are simply superb performers.
Big sample based soft synths that stream direct from disk... If you're using those, then i will second the FW Drives for audio work.. However, looking at the specs in your sig if you're running from a 2.26 Core2Duo machine i would imagine the processor would go before the drive on any heavy softsynths.
Probably best to go up to 8gb if you can on that machine?
Also, having performed a 7200rpm upgrade on an older macbook 5/6 years ago, be aware that it can add unwanted vibration and noise, have a negative effect on battery life and/or cause heat build up.  Drives are much more efficient nowadays however, so not sure how many of those issues still exist.
It's not just down to cost why the 5400's go into a macbook.
Have you also considered stripping the DVD Drive out and placing an SSD in there?  If i was to do any change on my MBP that would be the one i would perform.

  • The Apple shop loaded a German version of iTunes, how do I convert to English. Would I be better off deleting iTunes

The Apple shop installed a German version of iTunes, how can I convert it to an English version - or would it be better to delete the German version and download a new iTunes?

There is only one version of iTunes. Relaoding will simply load the same iTunes.
In iTunes, select the iTunes store on the right.
Scroll to the very bottom right.
Click the ball icon that has a flag and select the iTunes country you want.

  • How do I disable your irritating website blocker, or would I be better off with Safari?

i am trying to use 'ChessPro' on Facebook (a product I have been using for over 4 years), yesterday I couldn't call up a game without having to individually unblock a page, today each time I call up a game it creates a new web page and I cannot get back to the origianl Facebook page from there. Will you actually test your software in future rather than 'foisting' unwanted 'improvements' on your users?

Actually, Clippy was a feature of Microsoft Office, not Windows.
I tried a FB game someone else mentioned as a problem, and instead of loading in the FB context and showing the shield icon, it redirected me to the developer's site. I don't know whether this is an FB setting, or a Firefox setting, but I wasn't able to test it the time I tried.
Did you turn off the mixed content blocker? Do you recall making any other changes??
When you have a problem with one particular site, a good "first thing to try" is clearing your Firefox cache and deleting your saved cookies for the site.
    (1) Clear Firefox's Cache
orange Firefox button (or Tools menu) > Options > Advanced
On the Network mini-tab > Cached Web Content : "Clear Now"
If you have a large hard drive, this might take a few minutes.
    (2) Remove the site's cookies (save any pending work first). While viewing a page on the site, try either:
    * right-click and choose View Page Info > Security > "View Cookies"
    * Alt+t (open the classic Tools menu) > Page Info > Security > "View Cookies"
In the dialog that opens, you can remove the site's cookies individually.
Then try reloading the page and logging in again. Does that help?

  • What's the right memory module for an iMac G4 Flat panel 15-inch?

    Hello!
A new program I've recently bought requires me to expand my iMac's memory, which is currently 256 MB.
After searching the Apple Store web site, I think I've come to the conclusion that what I need is an Apple memory module called "512MB DDR266 SO-DIMM (PC2100), 200-pin". As I don't know any expert who can give me some advice, and as I'm no expert myself, could anyone please tell me if that's right?
    Thank you!
    iMac G4 Flat panel 15-inch   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

Ciao e benvenuto alle discussioni di Apple.
There are actually 3 different types of user slot installable RAM for the iMac G4 models so you'll have to check what your processor speed is (Go to  Apple Menu > About this Mac > ):
    iMac G4 15" and 17" 700 or 800MHz, PC133 144pin SODIMM.
    iMac G4 17" 1GHz, PC2100 200pin SODIMM
    iMac G4 1GHz 15" or 1.25GHz 17"/20", PC2700 200pin SODIMM.
So although I can't tell you exactly what RAM you need I can tell you that if you have a 15" screen the PC2100 is wrong.
I'd advise using Crucial memory in Europe as the prices are amongst the best and they are Mac friendly. I wouldn't recommend Apple memory; it's overpriced. I also wouldn't advise buying a cheap brand as it could cause trouble.
    Here are the fitting instructions.

I have an ipod shuffle 4th generation. I would like for the music to automatically shut off after one hour long song rather than going to next song on the list. Is this possible?

Sorry, but it's not.  The only way to get this to work is to only put the one hour song on your Shuffle.

  • To save memory on my Ipad 16gb rather than store films, can I send them to Icloud and use my storage there and simply bring one back when I want to watch.

To save memory on my Ipad as I only have the 16gb - rather than store films on the ipad, can i send them to icloud and bring back when i want to watch one. Or can I compress them to save memory. I know I should have bought the 32 or 64 gb ???

You can't send films to iCloud, whether you can re-download them depends upon what country that you are in (films can't currently be re-downloaded in all) and whether the relevant film studios have agreed to allow them to be re-downloaded, and whether they remain in the store (content providers occasionally remove their items). There are a number of wifi-enabled drives that you can buy that allow you to stream films and tv shows to an iPad, so you don't necessarily have to store them on your iPad e.g. Seagate GoFlex Satellite (I haven't got one so I don't know how good they are)

  • Mixing Memory Modules

I just bought the MacPro with a 3.0ghz chip and let them ship with the standard two modules, 1GB each of 800 Pro 8-core memory. I bought (at 4 All Memory) four 2GB DDR2-800FB DIMM modules. Is there a reason not to leave the original two 1GB modules in place and just add the new memory?

If there are only two modules in the computer, one goes in slot 1 in each riser. Otherwise, matched pairs go in slots 1 and 2 of each riser, and when those are filled, in slots 3 and 4.
If the computer came with just two modules, one must be moved to slot 2 of the other riser when adding more memory. If it came with more than two modules, you don't have to move any. You will get best performance if both risers match, but don't remove modules just to make them match. More memory is always faster.
If you have four modules of one size, and four of another, put the larger in slots 1 and 2 of each riser, and the smaller in slots 3 and 4. Slots 3 and 4 are slightly slower, since their signals pass through the modules in slots 1 and 2. Putting the smaller modules in slots 2 and 4 means most memory will be in the faster slots.
