Would I be better off with a MBP?

Hello,
Looking at the Desktop MP vs MBP 17"
1. Need to last at least 3 years
2. Like to play some games.
3. email, finances, ect.
4. I do not see me traveling, but would be nice to move around house.
5. stream movies from Netflix.
glossy/matte?
As a first machine, do most users buy laptop over desktop?
I am going to purchase today.
Thanks

It's really a matter of what you fall in love with. A desktop, by it's very nature, can be more powerful and hold more information than a laptop (depending on which desktop vs. laptop you buy, of course). I, personally, however, would never got back to a desktop. A desktop avoid the problems of fingerprints, the chance of being knocked over or damaged in transition, and all the rest...but once you taste the freedom of a laptop, of being able to just work in any room in the house or outside if you wish, well, that's it. You just don't want to go back to being chained to a desk.
The 17" will handle all you want to do and more. Obviously, we're fans of laptops here and we'll urge you that way, but the best thing to do is just play on it. See if you really want it. If you do, you don't have to worry, it will deliver.

  • Would I be better off with a 7200rpm HD or a SSHD for Logic?

I'm looking to upgrade the hard drive in my Macbook Pro and I'm curious as to whether an SSHD would be beneficial over a standard hard drive. The two options I'm looking at are either a 7200rpm hard drive or an SSHD hybrid drive that combines an 8GB SSD with a 5400rpm drive.
SSHD's are slightly more expensive and they seem like a good idea but I'm not sure if I'd get the benefit of the small SSD portion for using Logic or if I'd be better off with a 7200rpm drive.
I should add that I also need at least 500GB of storage so I've ruled out SSD's at this point.

I would say that it depends what you're doing, For my audio work i used to run a Mac Pro, then went to an iMac, and now do virtually everything from a Mac book pro with the standard 5400rpm hard drive.  I had plans to put an SSD in there, but i thought i would see how it went first.
I use predominately hardware synths, real guitars and vocals.. The only real sampling software i've used in the past has been Steve slate drums.  Recently i got into Omnisphere..  And i've got to say that i've never once had an issue with the 5400 drive.
On average i would say that i have around 4 guitar tracks, 3 vocal, 3-4 synth and a drum track playing at once, and never experienced a drop out in 18 months (The life of my MBP so far)... Obviously these tracks are spread out into more, but at any one time i can't imagine much more playing simulatenously.
So.. If you're my end of the scale don't go spending out too early.
Take Art's advice too, Firewire is a great option, i use that for video work where the HDD speed has been an issue in the past, and the FW drives are simply superb performers.
Big sample based soft synths that stream direct from disk... If you're using those, then i will second the FW Drives for audio work.. However, looking at the specs in your sig if you're running from a 2.26 Core2Duo machine i would imagine the processor would go before the drive on any heavy softsynths.
Probably best to go up to 8gb if you can on that machine?
Also, having performed a 7200rpm upgrade on an older macbook 5/6 years ago, be aware that it can add unwanted vibration and noise, have a negative effect on battery life and/or cause heat build up.  Drives are much more efficient nowadays however, so not sure how many of those issues still exist.
It's not just down to cost why the 5400's go into a macbook.
Have you also considered stripping the DVD Drive out and placing an SSD in there?  If i was to do any change on my MBP that would be the one i would perform.

  • How do I disable your irritating website blocker, or would I be better off with Safari?

i am trying to use 'ChessPro' on Facebook (a product I have been using for over 4 years), yesterday I couldn't call up a game without having to individually unblock a page, today each time I call up a game it creates a new web page and I cannot get back to the origianl Facebook page from there. Will you actually test your software in future rather than 'foisting' unwanted 'improvements' on your users?

Actually, Clippy was a feature of Microsoft Office, not Windows.
I tried a FB game someone else mentioned as a problem, and instead of loading in the FB context and showing the shield icon, it redirected me to the developer's site. I don't know whether this is an FB setting, or a Firefox setting, but I wasn't able to test it the time I tried.
Did you turn off the mixed content blocker? Do you recall making any other changes??
When you have a problem with one particular site, a good "first thing to try" is clearing your Firefox cache and deleting your saved cookies for the site.
    (1) Clear Firefox's Cache
orange Firefox button (or Tools menu) > Options > Advanced
On the Network mini-tab > Cached Web Content : "Clear Now"
If you have a large hard drive, this might take a few minutes.
    (2) Remove the site's cookies (save any pending work first). While viewing a page on the site, try either:
    * right-click and choose View Page Info > Security > "View Cookies"
    * Alt+t (open the classic Tools menu) > Page Info > Security > "View Cookies"
In the dialog that opens, you can remove the site's cookies individually.
Then try reloading the page and logging in again. Does that help?

The Apple shop installed a German version of iTunes, how can I convert it to an English version - or would it be better to delete the German version and download a new iTunes?

There is only one version of iTunes. Relaoding will simply load the same iTunes.
In iTunes, select the iTunes store on the right.
Scroll to the very bottom right.
Click the ball icon that has a flag and select the iTunes country you want.

  • Is a 16gig/RAM upgrade possible 13" MACBOOK PRO 2.9ghz if so is it worth it or am I better off with a 15" MBP?

Forgive me for trolling on this topic but I wanted to be a bit more specific and get properly eductated before I make a final decision.  I had a 17" and I f@cking hate it because of it's size.
I have been a mac guy for a few years but up until now I relyed on my tech/junior assistant to deal with all the tech stuff.  He has now gone and on his own leaving me to get all techy again.
A little about me and what I will use the laptop for.
I am a photographer/film maker. I run CS6 very often sometimes daily.  I usually have multiple picuture files open with multiple layers.  Some images can range to a size of 600mb+.  I shoot with cameras with no less than 18 megapxls.  On top of that I may also have FINAL CUT PRO and working on short films.  I generally have the habit of jumping back and forth between the two, plus get distracted with the web and stream videos. and the od video game (but not so much).
I keep reading that 16 gigs of ram is a possible upgrade on a 13" macbook.  Is it possible?  And if so, what sort of performance boost can I expect (in comparison to the 15" MBP?  Also, if so are there any glitches that may damage the computer?
    1.  I travel quite a bit I really prefer the portability of the 13" MBP and want to avoid having to buy te 15" MBP
    2.  I am attempting to be cost effective (which may be a futile attempt)
    All answers are welcome.
Thanks for your time and have a fine day Ladies and Gents.
    Cheers

Thanks mate but it doesnt, answer the question about performance.
In terms of screen real estate, I don't care much for it as I usually work relatively close to the pixel sizes and I generally work in very dum conditions so the antiglare is something I also dont care for.  If mac offered a Matt finish screen again it would be a dream lol.
Retina though sweet is really just a gimmick, stare at one screen, starred at them all, so I'm fine with the regular MBP.
    And size does matter.

  • Am I better off with Snowleopard then Marvicks? Would like Aperture upgrade but is it worth it?

Have been hanging on to Snowleopard but I am wondering is Mavericks worth it? I realized I am missing out on upgrades to Aperture etc. My Mac will run Mavericks as I have it on a seperate drive but can not run the software on my main drive. I do love Snowleopard's stability? Any thoughts?

  • In light of all the bugs so far, would I have been better off with Touch?

I experienced the battery drain issue after update 1.02, returned the ipod to receive one with exactly the same problem. This issue was solved with update 1.03, but now I have the earbud hiss problem caused by update 1.1.
This means for the 2nd time in about 3 months I will have to restore my ipod , thus wiping my entire library yet again. This is a major pain as I manually manage my music and will have to re-import countless CDs to re-constitute the library.
The inconvenience caused by the consistent faults with the Classic mean I'm considering returning it and replacing with an Ipod Touch. I've looked on the Touch forum and it seems a more reliable ipod - less significant faults caused by updates etc. Is this true, or am I likely to experience as many glitches with the Touch? Will Apple iron out the faults with the Ipod Classic, or are these update bugs indicative of a flawed machine that will only get worse with time?
Basically should I keep the Classic or return it and pay the extra for a Touch?
I know this is a personal issue, but any opinions or advice would be much appreciated.

Thanks for the opinions - very helpful.
I'm still in 2 minds about returning the Ipod. Having just discovered that the Touch does not work as a portable hard drive I'm less inclined to go for it. I do also agree that it's overpriced. I like the Classic, but I'm very frustrated that each update seems to create significant faults - is this normal for Ipods? My 3rd gen never seemed to suffer such problems with updates but maybe it did and I was just unaware.
Having had bad experiences with Apple's quality control on my current Powerbook, these problems with the Classic are really souring my opinion of Apple. I'm weighing up buying a new Imac for my work, but with all the problems my Apple products have had of late, I wonder if buying another Mac is a foolish thing to do!

  • Better off with ADSL???????

I have posted on here before about speed issues with my Infinity service, and thought I'd have another 'say' about the service. Original speed estimate was 35 Meg which was never even achievable according to Openreach Engineer (Chris.......... cheers you have tried your best). Had a connection of 23 Meg briefly which was unstable and was knocked back to 18 with this software thing (it should be known as malware in my opinion), my sync speed has dropped steadily and HAVE A CONNECTION OF 10.8 MEGS WITH ERRORS. I used to get 6.5 on Broadband
The engineer has been back today following reporting of the fault. The line is Aluminium so there is the reason for my !"£$ service, buffering on iplayer on sd settings, kids complaining of lag whilst gaming etc. etc.
'Can you justify the cost of Infinity?' says the engineer.

  • 2001 laptop: will it be better off with Tiger or Panther?

My dad has my old 15" Apple laptop (bought in 2001 or so). It's running Panther now, and is quite sluggish. I'm wondering: if I bring it up to Tiger, will it be even slower (if Tiger requires more performance) or better (if Tiger is somehow leaner and more efficient than Panther)?
    Mike

If you have or are willing to learn some experience with using clone utilities,
the external hard disk drive in FireWire enclosure is where the content of
the computer's nearly full drive could be moved via clone; freeing the internal
and allowing the option for a clean sweep of the internal hard disk drive of
the Mini (or any other) by using Disk Utility (Tiger's) from the install disc to
later wipe the drive, overwrite it with zeros, reformat it, and make sure it is
healthy and ready for an all new system.
You can get decent clone utilities that run free, via download online; the
two fairly well known ones are Carbon Copy Cloner and Super Duper.
New versions of both appear to offer some good controls over how the
clone is made and also in re-cloning the bootable copy back to the Mac
from an external at some point, if you have partitions on the external FW
HDD; it can then support multiple clones of your computer's full content.
{Since Tiger retail installer disc does not include the later versions of iLife
a computer installer software packet for a new computer shipped with Tiger
would have included, if you expect to continue using iPhoto, GarageBand,
iDVD or iMovie (as hardware permits) the iLife 06 may be the one to get.
Since iLife 09 and 08 may present issues in older computers lacking the
    correct specification hardware to support the needs of later iLife versions.}
By avoiding the older Panther (a new install from scratch and no upgrade
over the Panther original system; to forgo the Mini's original software) is
the best way to have Tiger in a computer. The installation is much cleaner
and the system parts are correct; as some Panther parts carried forward
in an upgrade and install to Tiger may remain and not be the better ones.
On the other hand, reasons to consider a clone of the older Panther
system on the external drive, is that can boot the computer and all the
older stuff could run better in that more empty hard disk drive; and so
could all the older iLife apps in Panther; plus AppleWorks, and other apps.
Camino browser works well in Mac OS X from 10.3.9 to current versions.
The Opera browser may offer satisfactory support, back to Panther. The
best option is to work on upgrading the slow older computer's hardware
so it can support Tiger as good as it can; if you can find and buy the
    OS X family pack for 10.4.x and then get the standalone updates for it;
you can save having to duplicate downloads of all those parts.
The 2001 'Book, may do adequately; if given all the RAM it can support
(see http://mactracker.ca for various machine specifications) and at a
point in the future, a larger hard drive inside it may be worth the effort.
A family-pack Tiger installer could be a less costly way to install a full
new system from scratch in the computers and also have a bootable
installer disc for later maintenance and support of the resulting systems.
    In any event...
    Good luck & happy computing!
    edited.

  • Better off with Sky

I've had bt broadband for almost 6 months now and up until 3 weeks ago it was fine, now I'm losing my connection randomly on various devices. I've been on the phone to the "bt" call centre and they've noticed a fault at their end and fixed the problem. Seems like a great service, however their fix has lasted one or maybe 2 days. This has happened at least 4 times and the latest chap was suggesting I screw off the phone line socket, I was surprised at that suggestion but I would give it a go, but I was having my tea at the time and asked him to phone back, to which he agreed.
6 hours later still no call and no surprise as they have hung up on me and promised to call me back but it's just a pack of lies. Are bt in breach of contract or is it my fault???? Either way a shocking service and a disgraceful was to treat customers in this day and age.
Ps does anyone know any British based phone numbers I can phone?

Welcome to the forum. CS are based in india - there is no uk number
You were asked to connect to the test socket as that will eliminate your internal extension wiring as the cause of your problem
Can you connect to test socket?
Try quiet line test. Dial 17070 option 2. Should hear nothing and best with corded phone. If cordless dull hum normal
Can you run btspeedtester and when first test completes can you run diagnostic test and post results. http://speedtest.btwholesale.com

  • Would I be better off mixing memory modules in my iMac rather than just having 1GB unused?

I have a late 2006 20-inch iMac that currently has two 1GB 200-pin PC2-5300 (667MHz) DDR2 SO-DIMM modules installed. I recently bought two 2GB modules of the same type (different brand). Since I also have a macbook that uses the same type of memory (but 1GB total), I want to know how I can get the most speed with the momory I have for both computers (ie 4GB in an iMac that only recognizes 3GB and 2GB in the Macbook or 3GB in each). Thanks!

Matching 4GB in that iMac will give you a slight increase in preformance over 3GB.

  • Would i be better off using parallels than boot camp

IS it easier to install parallels than boot camp?, Inonly want to be able to use the windows based version of Quicken

For $79 retail (or less) Parallels will give you the convenience of running your PC programs concurrently with your Mac programs.  Bootcamp will require a reboot each time you want to switch environments.
You are aware that Intuit sells Quicken 2007 for Lion, Mt.Lion, Mavericks for $15?

  • I have my photoshop CS6 on my PC but I just got a Mac and I want to put my photoshop on the Mac would I be better off just getting the CC on my Mac?  Thank you

So I am hoping that I can just do CC on my Mac and does the Photoshop & lightroom does that just automatically com the Bridge or is that a separate cost?
    Thank you

If you have a CS6 licensed version then you would need to request a platform swap to be able to use CS6 on the Mac.  Order product | Platform, language swap
If you subscribe to the Cloud then you could have it installed on either or both machines since the Cloud allows for mixed platform use.

  • Which laptop should I buy that would run AE better?

I'm debating between two HP laptops. I like the one better due to it's smaller size and higher resolution, but i'm a little worried that the i5 won't handle as well as I'd like.
The one i think I want to buy: http://www.amazon.com/HP-dm4-3090se-14-0-Inch-Screen-Laptop/dp/B006OEL9GU
PROS: 1600 x 900 resolution, no dedicated graphics card = good battery life, 32GB SSD Drive, light weight + portable
However, would I be better off getting http://www.amazon.com/Hewlett-Packard-BrightView-Fingerprint-SuperMulti/dp/B004S4DVTQ/ref= sr_1_3?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1331255057&sr=1-3 with the i7 processor and dedicated graphics? Downside is the resolution for the 15.6 inch screen is 1366 x 768, which would be really annoying to work with, correct?
Keep in mind, I plan on upgrading either of the laptops to 8GB RAM anyway, seeing as a stick of 4GB is like $20 on newegg. Would the i5 really be a killer in my performance? the first laptop also has a 32GB SSD, used mainly for OS and cache, i'm not sure if it would even be noticed by AE. If I went with somethign else, i'd purchase a mommentus XT (Solid state hybrid drive) anyway.
If any of you guys have any better suggestions for an ideal, travel friendly (I'd bring it to college classes + trips) AE-powered laptop for less than $1000, do share. I've spent a good couple hours trying to find the best investment.
    Thanks a ton!

You need a dedicated graphics card and soon-ish you will need it even more... Those intel graphics are simply useless and too much trouble. That doesn't mean you should go with the secohnd machine, though. The system specs for the screen res do not even qualify to install, if I'm not mistaken... The processor is a non-issue. Even an i3 will be reasonably fast enough for many tasks and with so little RAM you won't be able to use MP rendering, anyway. Do a little more research and find a different model.
