Would Like to Upgrade to Leopard - Where Do I Begin?

I would like to upgrade to Leopard, but I have a few concerns. My MacBook Pro was purchased in June 2006, so I think right when they were first available. I was running a trial version of Boot Camp, so about 40% of my hard drive is running on Windows XP Professional. I never use it and I'd like to uninstall this before I upgrade. How do I do this if Boot Camp is a trial version and I cannot run it any more?
Furthermore, I have a lot of software on the OS side of my hard drive that I really can't uninstall because I don't have any discs for it. This includes MS Office 2004, Adobe CS3, and Final Cut Pro 5. I'm afraid these program won't work if I upgrade to Leopard. Is this right?
I think the first step should be getting an external hard drive and backing up all the files I want to save, including programs. If I do this, will I be able to run those programs again on Leopard? Can anyone recommend the best way to proceed from here? Thanks.

Hey again. In regards to Adobe CS3, the pdf document http://www.adobe.com/support/products/pdfs/leopardsupport.pdf describes Adobe's support for Leopard. As noted in the document, the disk installation of CS3 may not function correctly under 10.5 but there are updates available that can increase compatibility.
Creating a clone of your hard drive is a very good idea. If you find your programs don't work under Leopard or the Upgrade installation is somehow botched, you can just restore from the clone backup. If you do decide to remove the Boot Camp partition using Disk Utility, be very very careful that you don't erase your main partition. Remember, you'll have to use the Leopard Disk Utility if you want to repartition your hard drive without erasing everything. Make sure you read all the dialog boxes thoroughly to make sure that the OS X volume will not be erased. It'd be a really good idea to make the clone before messing with your hard drive.
Unfortunately none of us here know exactly what the Snow Leopard pricing plan will be. It's likely that there won't be any upgrade plan for Tiger to Snow Leopard so you may have to pay the full retail price. If you consider that upgrading from Tiger to Leopard is $129 (retail price of Leopard) then Leopard to Snow Leopard is probably $29, as opposed to getting just Snow Leopard for (probably) $129, it'd be cheaper to wait. But that's just my opinion, if you want to get Leopard before Snow Leopard, go ahead.
In regards to how big of an external hard drive to get, first let me remind you that you'll need a drive at least as big as your internal drive to make a bootable clone backup. Then you may want to consider that if you decide to use the drive with Time Machine after upgrading, you'll need a drive at least two or three times the size of your internal. If you also want to use your external drive for storage, you could partition it into some space for Time Machine and some space for storage of files. Note that it is generally recommended that you have a completely separate drive for Time Machine, to increase disk performance and reduce wear on the drive.
Good luck with your upgrade!

    Hi, you need 10.6.8 first...
First you need to research all the problems people are having with the higher OSX versions, & make sure you have a bootable clone of what you have just in case.
then you must get 10.6, install it & update to 10.6.8 so you have the App Store to buy & download the huge 10.8 Installer.
    Snow Leopard/10.6.x Requirements...
    General requirements
       * Mac computer with an Intel processor
        * 1GB of memory (I say 4GB at least, more if you can afford it)
        * 5GB of available disk space (I say 30GB at least)
        * DVD drive for installation
        * Some features require a compatible Internet service provider; fees may apply.
        * Some features require Apple’s MobileMe service; fees and terms apply.

  • I would like to upgrade from Snow Leopard. The " Install OS X Mavericks to begin installation" link is black. Is it because I back-up with an outside back-up service? I do not know why it will not allow me to begin upgrade. I feel silly even asking.

Would like to upgrade to Mavericks, but just a slight problem.

    Hi Histotek,
You may want to make sure that your computer meets the system requirements for upgrading to Mac OS X 10.9 (Mavericks) -
Apple - OS X Mavericks - Read the technical specifications.

  • My Mac Book currently is using snow leopard, which is an upgrade.  I would like to upgrade again to the mountain lion so I can use my new nano iPod.  Will my Mac Book be compatible?

I am currently running an upgraded OS X 10.6.8 on my MacBook.  I would like to upgrade to the Mountain Lion.  Is my MacBook system compatible to run that version?

Choose About this Mac from the Apple menu, click on More Info, and check the model identifier against the following, which are the earliest MacBooks of each type that can run Mountain Lion and newer:
    MacBook5,1
    MacBookPro3,1
    MacBookAir2,1
A Mac older than those listed which has a Core 2 Duo(not Core Duo) or better CPU and at least 2GB of RAM can run Lion 10.7, which is available by clicking here. Neither Yosemite nor Lion support PowerPC software such as Microsoft Office 2004.

I would like to upgrade my itunes but have a macbook 10.8.5. How can I do this?

Do you have 10.8.5 or 10.5.8?  It's listed as the latter on your equipment setting, but you stated that you have 10.8.5?  If you have 10.8.5 you have the most recent version and you should be able to update iTunes by checking for updates.  However, if you have 10.5.8 you need to first update to 10.6 so that you can download the new version of iTunes.  To upgrade to 10.6 (Snow Leopard) you need to get a hold of Apple so that they can send you the install DVD which will allow you to update your computer, after that, you can then download updates and get access to the App Store right from your desktop where you can then download Lion or Mountain Lion should you choose to move on further.

  • I just purchased a IMac Power PC G4 which has the Tiger 10.4.11 OS. I would like to upgrade to Lion OS. How can I upgrade the OS?

I just purchased a Power Mac PC G4. The system has OS Tiger 10.4.11. I would like to upgrade it to Lion.
    How can I do It?
    Thank You

PPC (PowerPC) is the processor architecture of all G3, G4 and G5 Power Mac computers.
PPC Macs cannot run any OS greater than Leopard, 10.5.8 because after that, Apple quit developing for PPC processors and limited support for the Intel processor line only.
As for upgrade to Leopard, Yes, if your machine meets the minimum requirements of 867 MHz or faster processor, 512 MB or greater of RAM and has a DVD reader it can have Leopard installed.
To install Leopard, one must first purchase a RETAIL (black with X on it) disc.
After install of 10.5, 10.5.1,10.5.4 or 10.5.6 retail version, free updates to 10.5.8 are available from Apple.
    Check eBay for discs:
    http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_nkw=mac+os+x+leopard+retail+10.5
If your machine is slower than 867 MHz, Google "Unsupported Leopard Installation".
Tiger is lthe best choice for slower PPC Macs.

Since your Mac probably came with 10.4, there is no longer a way to get 10.5 Leopard install media. IF it has the requirements, you may be able to upgrade to 10.6 Snow Leopard by buying the boxed install media at the Apple Store for $30.

    From what I read here:
    http://www.tuaw.com/2011/06/06/lion-...u-2-gb-of-ram/
s long as they already have Snow Leopard 10.6.8 installed in it.All a person needs to do with that type of iMac is to upgrade/max out their Ram. They claim that an Interl iMac with Core 2 Duo is all that is needed, as long as it has OS 10.6.8 installed. They say you don`t need  the "Core i3, Core i5, Core i7, or Xeon processor"
But I wonder about the RAM speed, the iMac 2.33Ghz uses DDR2 SDRAM,  which I believe is rated at 667Mhz. Lion maybe installed but it might be problems running smoothly or not?
Did some quick checking and the iMacs apple is selling this year use 1333MHz DDR3 SDRAM.
The only thing to do is to make sure you have a good back-up, Install your RAM and install Snow Leo, then wait a couple of hours and install Lion.
    Good Luck

  • I would like to upgrade my Macbook Pro Model A1278.

    Hi,
I would like to upgrade RAM and hard drive memory on my Macbook Pro Model A1278, but I'm not sure what is the maximum RAM I can install and what is the maximum hard drive memory I can install if its even doable. Also, which are the parts I should buy to upgrade the RAM and hard drive memory (if its doable).
Currently my macbook runs a 2.26GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor; 3 MB shared level 2 cache, 2GB of 1066MHz DDR3 SDRAM, 160GB 5400-rpm hard drive, its a 13'' laptop, NVIDIA GeForce 9400M graphics processor with 256MB of DDR3 SDRAM shared with main memory, it currently has MAC OS X version 10.6.8.
Thanks for the help in advance!

    Maximum Memory
    8.0 GB
    Memory Slots
    2 - 204-pin PC3-8500 (1066 MHz) DDR3 SO-DIMM
The largest hard drive you can install is a 1.5 TB drive from Hitachi (HGST.)
You can find memory at OWC, DataMem, or Crucial.com. OWC also sells suitable hard drives, toolkits, and online tutorials.
How to replace or upgrade a drive in a laptop
Step One: Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger, Leopard or Snow Leopard.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
Step Two: Remove the old drive and install the new drive.  Place the old drive in an external USB enclosure.  You can buy one at OWC who is also a good vendor for drives.
Step Three: Boot from the external drive.  Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager appears.  Select the icon for the external drive then click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Step Four: New Hard Drive Preparation
      1. Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
      2. After DU loads select your new hard drive (this is the entry with the
mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of
the drive in DU's status area.  If it does not say "Verified" then the drive
is failing or has failed and will need replacing.  Otherwise, click on the
Partition tab in the DU main window.
      3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from
the drop down menu to one. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended
(Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to
GUID  then click on the OK button. Click on the Partition button and
wait until the process has completed.
      4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the
drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main
          window.
      5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the
Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to
          return to the Erase window.
      6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several
hours depending upon the drive size.
Step Five: Clone the old drive to the new drive
      1. Open Disk Utility from the Utilities folder.
      2. Select the destination volume from the left side list.
      3. Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
      4. Check the box labeled Erase destination.
      5. Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag it to the
          Destination entry field.
      6. Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to the
          Source entry field.
      7. Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
Destination means the new internal drive. Source means the old external drive.
Step Six: Open the Startup Disk preferences and select the new internal volume.  Click on the Restart button.  You should boot from the new drive.  Eject the external drive and disconnect it from the computer.

I had fits with the last link I posted. At first it worked fine, then all of a sudden, it quit working. I now have iCloud - iCal syncing, but iCal is read only. Not a real big deal since you can log onto iCloud using Safari and post a new event.
