Would resetting the pram cause a forced battery cycle?
I have a macbook pro that's been plugged in for a few days - I know it was charged.
Today, I had an unrelated problem and had to call apple support.
They had me clear some cache folders and reset the p-ram by powering on then hitting command-option-p-r. The macbook was also booted into safe mode several times.
This evening, I hadn't paid much attention, but I noticed that the battery indicator said it had an hour and a half left to charge, and I see the orange light on. It was never unplugged so I'm curious how the power drained enough to need over 90 minutes of charging time.
Does anyone know if resetting the pram causes the battery to auto drain/charge/calibrate?
(the battery has 14 cycles on it, and is less than 3 months old in an i5 15"MBP)
I must have something going on then.
I didn't notice it until I reset the pram, but it could have been happening before that.
I noticed it again today.
the icon in the menubar showed it was on AC, the adapter light was green.
I went into the power control panel and it said it was 76% charged.
I took a few screenshots of the panel over a few minute period and the battery was definitely draining.
When I disconnected and re-connected the AC Adapter, it then went orange and is now charging.
Could connecting the ipad, along with a usb keyboard, and a second display, cause the macbook to exceed the 85watt capacity of the power adapter and cause the system to pull from battery?
Anyhow, I've reset the pram again this morning and also reset the smb for good measure.
It's charging now, and After it's done I'll leave it on all day so it can calibrate the battery.
Hopefully a trip to the genius bar will not be necessary as everything else is working flawlessly.

My macbook will not boot. It goes to a blue screen after the logo and wheel goes off. I have taken the battery out and held the on/off button for five seconds and reset the PRAM. I have the the original os disk but have not put it in for fear of losing un backed op data.

RichYou won't lose any data unless you erase your hard drive.
Put your install DVD into the optical drive and reboot. As soon as you hear the boot chime, hold down the "c"key on your keyboard (or the Option key until the Install Disk shows up). That will force your MacBook to boot from the install DVD in the optical drive.
When it does start up, you'll see a panel asking you to choose your language. Choose your language and press the Return key on your keyboard once. It will then present you with an Installation window. Completely ignore this window and click on Utilities in the top menu and scroll down to Disk Utility and click it.When it comes up is your Hard Drive in the list on the left?
If it is then click on the Mac OS partition of your hard drive in the left hand list. Then select the First Aid Tab and run Repair Disk. The Repair Disk button won't be available until you've selected the Mac OS partition on your hard drive. If that repairs any problems run it again until the green OK appears and then run Repair Permissions. -

As you say, a re-install is probably the best way to go, but I thought that given that nothing's working correctly now it might be worth a go. If it fails desiree274 can still proceed with a re-install. -
MacBook does not startup unless I reset the PRAM.
Several times now I have turned on my MacBook and been greeted by a dead, blue screen. The computer does not load Mac OS X from this state. If I reset the PRAM (by forcing a shutdown and then holding CMDOPT+PR when the computer turns on) Mac OS X loads. Why does this happen?
I have made some modifications to the computer that may have influenced its performance.
1. Upgraded to 2GB RAM.
2. Uninstalled extra languages using the program Monolingual.
3. Disabled Dashboard.
4. Disabled Spotlight.
5. Disabled Journaling on my harddrive.
6. Repaired disk permissions.
7. Cleared logs and caches and ran Cron Scripts using the program Ultimate Task.I think I have some other information, or hypotheses which i'd love other users to share information on.
I notice, that when i have this problem, that in System Preferences/Startup Disk that the MAC OS X system is not selected/highlighted.
Also, I was thinking, perhaps this is due to having bootcamp/windows installed ?
So 2 questions:
Do users experiencing this problem have Bootcamp installed with a windows system on their mac
and
After getting the dark grey screen and starting up (by resetting PRAM), does the System Preferences/Startup Disk that the MAC OS X system is not selected/highlighted ?
If this is the case, I guess we have a bit more information to go by...
If users that are experiencing this issue do not have bootcamp installed, then at least we can rule out bootcamp (since it is a beta).
If users are reporting the same nonselection of the system volume in system preferences, then at least we're talking about the same problem. -

Then it started doing the same thing, but this time resetting the pram doesnt work for repair, and I also cant start up in safe mode now. Any ideas what happened, or suggestion on a fix for this?????

I've reset my PPAM before to get around Firmware lock, but I've upgraded to mountain lion and now need to do the same thing, but I can't reset the PRAM. I've heard of the chip that is on the post 2011 macs, but I must not have one? What to do? Also, I can not get start up chimes unless I have the factory startup disk in. How do I reset the PRAM of my MacBook Pro in OSX Mountain Lion?
Dear all, I bought a new MacBook Pro 13" (Mid 2012, MacBook Pro 9,2) and upgraded the OS to Mountain Lion. There have been some crashes (apparently related do Chrome), so I wanted to reset the PRAM to "clean up" a bit, but it didn't work. I made sure I followed the standard procedure (as in my old MacBook Pro 15" Late 2008, which was stolen), and held properly the CMD+OPT+P+R combination before getting the grey screen. Just to be sure, I tried shutting down and turning on again and also just restarting my Mac. Neither worked. What may be the problem? Thanks.
The fact that Apple saw fit to put out a ML-specific PRAM-reset note confirms that the key sequence is unchanged. Yet I've witnessed quite a few instances of people complaining that it did not work on that OS. Will try when I get on my testbench later tonight. But still seems odd to have such a recurrence of the same complaint.

My large monitor is not showing the screen of my MAC airbook on it. All cables are hooked up. I reset the pram per the instructions I received at the MAC store and the monitor is still not working. Message on blacked out monitor says"check signal cable". All cables are attached and monitor and MAC are both plugged into power source...Help ?

Is resetting the PRAM what I need?
After a power failure, my Power Mac (G4 1.25 GHz Dual Processor) will not go to sleep on command even though the System Preferences are set correctly. Other symptoms of the problem include getting the spinning wheel when I try to modify the System Preferences and it won't recognize my digital camera at ll when I plug it into any USB.
Is resetting the PRAM what I need to do? Is the only way to do it by going into the actual computer and pressing the button?
Right now I am in the middle of summer classes for school. Am I risking ANYTHING at all by resetting the PRAM? I CANNOT be without this machine right now.

So, spinning wheel = beachball. Because you had a power failure, there is possibly damage to the hard drive directory, thus the spinning wheels.
How do I start up from the OS install disk?
Insert the disc into the optical drive, restart the machine, and hold down the C key on the keyboard while starting. In the window after you select the language, in the Menu Bar/Utilities, open Disk Utility. In Disk Utility, select your start up drive, and then select "Repair Disk". When done, close Disk Utility, and click Restart from the Menu bar. The machine will return to normal boot.
Do I do that before or after resetting the PMU?
No particular order, but you could run the Disk Utility first.
If after running Disk Utility the sleep command still doesn't work, the reset the PMU. -
I got a new Mac Pro and I am using my 30 inch cinema display. It has been flickering grey sometimes and then will stay grey and lock up my computer and I have to reboot... this is very annoying..help. I have reset the pram and that seems to help for a bit but then it starts up again...and please don't tell me to check for software updates:)

HT1712 Resetting the PRAM and the apple screen???
How long does it take to load back up after resetting the pram? It's been on the gray apple screen for some time now.
1.) Under Energy Saver: I specified not to ever put my computer to sleep, however, there is a checkbox for putting the hard disks to sleep when possible. What is the difference?
One's the computer (i.e., the operatinng system stored in memory), the other controls the physical HDs.
2.) After specifying not to put my computer sleep, I went to the login screen using fast user switching and there is still a sleep button on the login window. I am guessing that this is to put the computer to sleep and not the display.
Probably. As I stated earlier, I don't use FUS, so don't know its functioning WRT to sleeping.
How can I put the display to sleep at the login window? I want to make sure that it at the login window so if I leave the computer I do not need to worry about anyone waking up the display and having access to it.
AFAIK, you can't. Waking up the display doesn't give access to the computer when it's at the login window. If you could put it into a state wherein you couldn't wake the display, how do you suspect that you'd be able to login yourself?

My ebook reader no longer works now I have upgraded to Lion. I have reset the PRAM and tried booting in 32-bit mode, all with no joy. Come on Apple, it worked fine with Snow Leopard.

On the left hand side of the page is an emac link or just scroll down to about three quarters down on the page and look for a link called "emac.pdf" NOT "eMacatigraphics.pdf". Download the PDF and search in the document for PMU or PRAM it has instructions for reseting the PMU (PRAM). Basically there is a little button next to the battery under the access door (where the RAM and stuff is) to reset everything. Just follow the directions precisely and you should be fine.

again!You should not need to reset PRAM periodically. If you find that PRAm is needing to be reset frequently then there is most likely something wrong with your Mac.
As to regular maintance as is required on a Windows PC, no there is no need to do that.
