Would TechTool Pro help?

Hi
I have an older 120gb LaCie d2 which Disk Utility sometimes reported a "minor volume header error" which it couldn't fix.
Think trouble started after an incorrect power off.
While transferring files to or from it the drive would spin down then spin back up again, and stay spinning but I could no longer access it or unmount it without a forced restart as the Finder would just hang if I tried to shutdown.
Upon restart the drive couldn't be seen or mounted.
Even with the computer shutdown it would keep spinning until the power was manually turned off.
I erased it, ran Disk Utility which said it appeared ok.
But the problem was still there.
Ran Disk Warrior, though I'm not sure it has done anything.
I partitioned it but still get the same problem, though now ejecting one of the partitions will eject the other without the need for a restart.
But the "copying to..." window won't disappear even if I press "stop"
Relaunching the Finder clears it though.
When running a system from one partition the same problem occurs when copying files to the other, though everything else Finder, other apps still run.
So I was wondering would TechTool or Drive 10 or something similar be of any help?
Or should I just replace the drive?
Any suggestions are much appreciated
Thanks
Anthony

Anthony:
TechTool Pro might be worth a try, if you have a copy, although if Disk Warrior found no problems TTP may not, either. So, if you have a copy on hand, try it, but don't rush out and buy one.
What would be worth a try is, if you can back up your data from the HDD in question, to completely wipe the HDD, zeroing all data. That should take care of any bad blocks and directory problems. Worth a try before deciding to replace the drive, I think.
Good luck.

I have IMac OSX 10.9.4, 4GB,Processor 3.06 with Intell2Duo. I would like to check for Malware. I run a TechTool Pro 6 every month and that comes up great.
When check how much memory I am using, with only Safari open I am using 3.9 and more of her 4.0 memory. She is very. very slow in processing. I had 4000
trash to clean out and it took her over an hour to expel. Also for some reason Safari will not allow me to click on a link, in my G-mail, and let it go to the page.
It has a sign saying a pop-up blocker is on and will not let me do it. I must open the stamp to look at my e-mails and if I have redirected link now I can do it.
I have not changed my preferences so where is this pop-up blocker?
I have looked at preferences on Safari and Google, which I do not understand Google, and do not see where this blocker could be.
Malware is something I want to make sure is not on my computer. Tech Tool Pro 6 is all I know of and it does not detect Malware.
    Help.

  • My external HD won't mount anymore on Mac OS, Disk Warrior or TechTool Pro, but appears as "media" on Disk Utility. What do I do?

I have this 1 TB Caviar Black drive from WD, I've installed it on an external HD case and have been using to store large files like HD movies and old archive things. Its file system is Mac OS Journaled.
Last year, all of a sudden, it gave me the following error while trying to plug it in: "The disk you inserted was not readable by this computer"
I was mad and left it for dead while looking for a way to fix it.
Then, again all of a sudden, it started working again, flawlessly and without any problems.
It worked well for at least 5 more months and then BAM... same error again!
I've tried DiskWarrior, TechTool Pro, Disk Utility and nothing... The disk won't show up on any of these apps, except on Disk Utility as a "Media" drive with 0 bytes used and unformatted partition.
    What do I do?
Could it be the external HD case?

It could be a problem with enclosure, but it also could be a problem with the drive itself or the drive is possibly corrupted. I would start by contacting WD tech support.
It may be possible to recover files from the drive using file recovery software:
    General File Recovery
If you stop using the drive it's possible to recover deleted files that have not been overwritten by using recovery software such as MAC Data Recovery, Data Rescue II, File Salvage or TechTool Pro.  Each of the preceding come on bootable CDs to enable usage without risk of writing more data to the hard drive.  Two free alternatives are Disk Drill and TestDisk.  Look for them and demos at MacUpdate or CNET Downloads. Recovery software usually provide trial versions that enable you to determine if the software would help before actually paying for it. Beyond this or if the drive has completely failed, then you would need to send the drive to a recovery service which is very expensive.
The longer the hard drive remains in use and data are written to it, the greater the risk your deleted files will be overwritten.
Also visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQ on Data Recovery.
Otherwise, unless the drive fixes itself like before you should try repartitioning and reformatting to determine if the drive has failed or is now working properly.

  • TechTool Pro finds a corrupted file

The latest version of TechTool Pro (v. 4.0.6) found a problem with a file and displayed the following message: "Type List Offset is invalid: Prop-Object.bmp." (Spotlight doesn't locate this file.) The file is probably an image according to Apple Care, but because Apple's Disk Utility gives the computer a clean bill of health, Apple Care says I needn't worry about it, and I don't. However the error/warning message is a minor annoyance whenever I run TechTool Pro. Has anyone on this forum had the same result with TechTool Pro? What is this image/file? Where is it? Can it be safely removed and/or rebuilt? Any information will be appreciated. I am using Tiger (v. 10.4.3) without any problems.
    Any information will be appreciated.

    Hi, Simmm —
I don't know the answer to your question. But, since it's otherwise gathering moss at the moment . . .
. . . I'll climb way out on the limb with a crazy thought from left field:
Though .bim is decidedly a graphics file suffix, the rest of the message sounds suspiciously like resource fork lingo . . .
Now — would someone who understands this ~better than I please try to rescue me (I mean Sam), please? (Or, I suppose, saw off the limb.)
Either way, it wouldn't surprise me in the least if this were — at "best" — an invisible file. If so, it's quite possibly something you don't want to mess with.
How thoughtful of TTPro 4.0.6 to leave you hanging like this. Have you considered posting a query to Micromat support?
Wish I could be of more help.

  • TechTool Pro 4 on iMac having troubles

Run and love TechTool Pro 4 on my B&W G3 tower. However I'm having troubles with it on my iMac G3 700 Mhz. It will not let me create an eDrive, it says to run the Tests, which I have done to no avail, (it has a code (???) next to that prompt, (14), but I don't know what 14 means).
Also, I could turn off journaling on my B&W through Techtool in order to defrag the disks, which when it was done, I could turn back on. On the iMac, it will not allow me to turn journaling off. When I click on the box next to the volume to disable journaling, I get a pop-down window that says it's updating or something, and then the box rechecks itself, effectively preventing me from defrag-ing it. I don't understand what the difference would be, except that on my B&W I am running the program from the eDrive, while on the iMac, since it won't allow me to create an eDrive, I'm running the program from the CD. Any help would be appreciated, (Techtools website certainly was not a help). Thanks!

  • IMac i7 and TechTool Pro

I have TechTool Pro 4.5.1 on my iMac i7 (late 2009). I need to update to 4.5.2 or 4.5.3 in order to use TechTool Pro but Micromat says that I cannot bootup on the latest update because they still need Apple's start up files for the iMac i7. What are my options? Also, I have TechTool Deluxe 3.1.3 DVD but cannot get it to boot up.
    Thanks for helping.

I do not own TT Pro, but checked their website and it seems that 5.07 is indeed for Snow Leopard:

You said you got the DW updated - I would simply install that on your internal and then create a bootable clone on an external drive (or, if you have a recent clone, just install it on your external). In any case, it is much easier to restart from your external and then run DW from there on your internal than actually booting from DW. And the result is the same: you do not have to be booted from DW, you just need to be booted from a drive other than the one you want it to work on.
Since I don't have TT Pro, I can't speak for that process, but can't see why it should work the same way (install on a bootable clone and run it from there).
Which brings up the question: you do have a bootable clone?? If not, you should have some sort of backup before running either of those apps just in case.

  • TechTool Pro, DiskWarrior & the Apple Store

    Hello Apple Forums,
I was just in the Apple store today looking at TechTool Pro and DiskWarrior. I asked the friendly Mac store people what they recommend between the two and they said neither. "OS 10.4 Tiger does a very good job of keeping itself in tune. These programs are almost as useless as anti-virus software on the Mac."
I was very surprised to hear this because, over the years, TechTool Pro has saved my butt multiple times no matter what OS I was running. I have been a couple situations where the Disk Utility (and its predecessors) wouldn't fix something that TT Pro did.
Is OS 10.4 that good? Do I not need these other programs any more? I love Tiger and it's stability but I'm not sure I'm ready to believe that I can leave TT Pro on the curb and wave goodbye forever. Any opinions on the matter?
    Thanks.

    PowerBook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

Hello and Welcome to Apple Discussions.
I too have a PBookG4. It's about 4 years old. Yes, Disk Utility can fix and help maintain your Mac, but if Disk Utility can't repair errors it finds, you would then need a good dependable disk repair program. I have TechToolPro 4 and DiskWarrior. DW has saved me 3 trips to the Apple store... hence, I've yet to have to take it in for service. DW has more then paid for itself. I do use TTPro4 on occasion for serious maintenance.
At my Apple Store at least, the Genius bar uses DiskWarrior consistently. I've watched <smile>.
Just my 2¢, but others will see your post and offer their advice. It's certainly good to get more then one opinion.

  • IPhoto library is a behemoth on my MacBook pro -- help this Mac Grandma out

Don't laugh at me ( if you do, be really quiet about it!)
Here's the deal: Out of fear of losing photos, I have made a monster out of my iphoto library. It now takes up 34GB of space on my MacBook Pro. There are duplicates in there and well, it's a mess. (I have ghost images of some photos, for example).
I want to start fresh but not lose photos and data and album names. I have copied the iPhoto Library folder to DVD. I have run the backup program with iLife (to 300GB LaCie Extreme). I have even copied the iPhoto Library folder to the LaCie three times and each time renamed with the date (e.g. iPhoto Library 9/15/07; iPhoto Library 11/13/07, etc. ). Now I have so many duplicates, I don't trust the way I've used backup, and to top it all off - I have little to no space on my MacBook Pro. It's as slow as a my old Powerbook 180 running three programs at once.
    1. How do I free up the space on my MBP and yet still work on current photos in iPhoto on it and adding to my iPhoto Library without carrying around every picture (and then some) I have ever taken on my laptop. Should I start from scratch with a whole new library? Then how do I work with old photos from the older iPhoto library.
    2. What's the best way to back it up.
    3. Would iLife '08 help or would that complicate matters?
    4. Any advice on duplicates? How to I find duplicate photos, delete them, but make sure I have not lost the image and data?
Any help would be appreciated before my MBP with 1.99 GB left crashes.
Help this grandma out! I love Macs but I don't use them properly. Happy Holidays! Mrs. P.

    Mrs. P
You've got a nice project to keep you busy over the xmas!
    1. You MUST first make space on the disk - you're in immediate danger of a very serious OS crash if you don't. The fastest way to do this is to move the iPhoto Library Folder to an external disk:
    1. Quit iPhoto
    2. Copy the iPhoto Library Folder as an entity from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
    3. Hold down the option (or alt) key while launching iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new location. From that point on this will be the default location of your library.
    4. Test the library and when you're sure all is well, trash the one on your internal HD to free up space.

  • Using techtool pro found problem with "volume structure".  What to do?

Using techtool pro found problem with "volume structure" and this was not fixed by TECHTOOL PRO.  What do you suggest I do?

I would boot from my gray install disk (put the disk in the drive and restart holding down the C key). Then choose Utilities and run Disk Utility and click Repair Disk. As always, be sure you have a back up of your data first.

  • Extending isight NEED PRO HELP PLAESE!!! Haven't found answer anywhere yet

ok, I know you guys can do this... c'mon- please help.
I am trying to run close to 50-60 feet of firewire over to where my LCD TV is located to power my isight camera from my Mac Mini and am having problems.
It was suggested that I buy (5) "IEEE-1394a Extension Cables" (says on package can be cascaded up to 10 of these) to help power the isight at the end of this long run. I purchased these cables, and daisy chained them together, ending with the run to my camera, yet it didn't seem to work. I'd get my green light on my cam for a second, then it would freeze my ichat program.
I'd really like to be able to do this yet have no idea how to make this work. My "media Center" is located at one end of this room, so it's where the computer lives already.
LAtest horrible update- now my isight doesn't want to work after plugging in those repeaters. ARGGGG- Green light comes on for a sec, then shuts off. I'll deal with tying to figure that out next. I hope someone out there has some good ideas.
I'm hoping someone knows how to fix this problem.
    Please help

    Hello Zmoncrief
Apple Discussions is a user-to-user support forum, so if you do not get the "PRO HELP" you seek here, try your nearest Apple Store or Apple VAR.
Bill Gallagher has helped more people with long-cable-run Firewire iSight connection questions in Apple Discussions than anyone I know. You may find the help you need in one of his posts from this search of iSight Discussions for Bill's answers. Because your installation needs will be specific to you, I did not try to pick one answer that I think will do what you want.
As for the fact that you are now having difficulty with your Firewire iSight, connect your iSight directly to your Mac and use the suggestions in How to test your (external) iSight to ensure it is functional. If you continue to have problems, the suggestions on that page will help you troubleshoot to find the source of your problem and fix anything that is user-correctable. There are no user-serviceable parts in iSight, so if you cannot get it working, you will need help from an Apple Service Technician.

  • TechTool Pro – can't create an eDrive

After selecting Source Volume for eDrive and Mac OSX the Create eDrive button remains grey. I'm using TTP version 4.5.1

According to TechTool Help that's bundled with the software:
+The eDrive contains your basic Mac OS X system as well as a copy of TechTool Pro. If you ever have trouble with your normal startup volume, you can simply restart your computer from the eDrive. This will give you immediate access to the tools you need for recovery and repair. It eliminates the need for a bootable CD-ROM/DVD or ancillary hard drive for system volume repair or maintenance. This may be particularly attractive for use on a portable computer. With an eDrive installed you will not need to carry a repair CD/DVD with you on the road.+
I took that to mean you can create an eDrive on the built-in drive.

  • Using Techtool Pro 5

Hi, I just finished setting up my new Mac Pro. Pretty amazing upgrade from my old G5 dual 2.0! I was wondering if anyone has advice for using techtool pro to repair, defragment and rebuild drives from time to time. I certainly used it on my old power mac and it was helpful in optimizing performance.
    Thanks in advance.

stuck in an elevator with an insurance agent.
I am in fact the designated elevator emergency operator at my Insurance office...
I figured out one mystery, why I couldn't find the same options as before. I had been using TTP 4.
There is a host of clear cut specified options for creating ones own set of tests in TTP4, that in TTP5 may, I don't know yet, be only possible by clicking the "next" button, which seems to be the one on the right.
But the commands begin very slowly it seems. One click and wait half a minute or so might do it. I'm getting too annoyed to tell.
If anyone can tell me where the old interface like structure is on TTP5, please do.

  • Techtool pro 4.1 compatibility with osx 10.4.6

Hi recently i updated to techtool pro 4.1 and since this time i have had a few problems. I erased the original edrive as advised and reinstalled the new edrive./ all was hunky dory everything working really well and quick. Then the phantom grey screen appeared at boot up. All keyboard function had no effect, no chime no whirring just freeze. So i zapped the PRAM and hey presto it kicked in allowing me to disconnect peripherals and as a precausiton i took out the techttol pro completely. since then and on reading other users comments ablout glitches i have been loathe to reinstall it but want trouble free computing ( as near as **** it) What do i do I have software whcih is touted initially as great and has conflicting reports. What do i do?
I use my mac for home use only and only have fotos and music and the odd lyric i have written. Q what is disc warrior do i need it?
Could this have nothing to do with the techtool software could it be a virus?
Many thanks for any comments or help you can afford me in this matter.
    Alan

Hi Alan, Welcome to Apple Discussions.
I am running TTP 4.1.1 with 10.4.6 without issues. I don't use e-drive, never did so I can't help you there but there should be no conflict.
I can assure you with 99.999% certainty it is NOT a virus.
DiskWarrior rebuilds the directory and it does it in the same fashion as TTP and that is about all it does, so if you have TTP I wouldn't advise spending the additional $ on DW.
What does Disk Utility >> Verify Disk report?
What issues are you experiencing now?
