Would this be a unnessasary upgrade (Power Supply)

Ok this is my power supply Rhycom 550W ATX Power Supply Dual Fans Gold I bought at the local Marketpro computer show for $25 bucks. NOw when I seen the 550 watts I said to myself thats more then enuff power. But then I found this great msi fourm page and see I am  very rookie on the whole psu thing. I tried to use the power supply calculator but I would rather Have some expert advise on this and any help would be great I will upgrade if I have to I dont mind at all. So should I upgrade are is this just fine....
Link to the psu I have http://tekgems.com/Products/et-9619-pwr-atx550p4-nb.htm

I might be missing something on that website but I could not find the
Max output combined watts for the 3.3v and 5v rails. Don’t buy any
PSU that does not have at least 200 combined watts!
Also, if you add up the amps I come up with 532 amps @ 100%,
now if you take those 532 amps @ 70% you get 372.4 amps,
that’s not to good for a 550watt PSU!
Usually in PSU, you get what you pay for!
Take a look at this thread on “Choosing the right power supply” by

I have a HP pavilion a6603w desktop model number FK555AA-ABA a6603w.  I have a low to mid level graphics card, which is the most that my power supply will handle.
I want to get a stronger power supply to run a high end graphics card with a self cooling fan.  Can anyone suggest an excellent, reliable power supply brand and model that will fit into my desktop case with minimum fuss?  I am not tech savy but I have replaced my video card and hard drives with no problem.

Hello lugnut1204, I checked the specifications for your system and is appears the system shipped with a 250 power supply. The dimensions for this power supply are 5 15/16 inches wide, 5.5 inches long, and 3 3/8 inches tall. Since your system is a MicroATX version, you would be slightly limited to a power supply of the same size as the original power supply.
Here  is a link to Newegg where a Corsair 600 watt power supply can be found with almost the exact same physical size as you original 250 watt version. The Corsair power supply dimensions are 5.9 inches wide, 5.5 inches long, and 3.4 inches tall.
If you get a power supply too long, it may interfer with the back of the CD\DVD drives.
You would need to locate a video card that you wanted and make sure the power supply requirements were less than the 600 watt Corsair model. Most of the mid to higher end cards require at leaset a 400 to 500 watt or greater power supply.

  • Would this be considered an upgrade or a downgrade?

    _Right now I have_:
    2-year old Mac Pro
    2 x 2.66 Dual-Core Intel Xeon
    4 GB RAM 667MHz DDR2
    OS X Tiger 10.4.11
_I am considering selling it and getting_:
    Brand new iMac
    2.66 Intel Core 2 Duo
    4 GB RAM 1066MHz DDR3
    OS X Leopard 10.5.6
Performance-wise, would this be considered an upgrade or a downgrade?

Booting would perhaps be faster on her system if it has less RAM. The system goes through a power-on self test which will take longer with more RAM. She could also have fewer programs launching on startup.
Web browsing might be faster on hers for a number of reasons: different versions of browser (the Safari 4 beta, for instance, is much faster than earlier version or just about any other browser), a faster Internet connection, etc.
She could have a different version of GarageBand which would be faster.
There are just too many variables to offer much of anything further in the way of advice. Unless you had exactly the same software load - the same version of OS, the same versions of applications, etc. - it's really difficult to say why her system might be faster, or why you might perceive that it's faster.

    hi Fort3,
    Welcome to Lenovo Community Forums!
If your Planning on an upgrade, Yes It is definitely safe to upgrade the Power Supply even to a 600w or 500,
But Judging on the K450 Casing, this is somehow like the K410 which also may have one connector that you will not find on a replacement PSU
this is the Connector From the Lenovo OEM PSU
This is For powering up the Case feature  such as light and the performance switch on top of the case,
Other Users with k410 who did an upgrades said that they just let the light and the switch off without the connector and there were difference in performance,
Some Did an Upgrade like on this thread,

  • Upgrading Power Supply hp pavillion p6744y

Need to upgrade the Power Supply. Just wondering if a 600 watt power supply would be too much for the motherboard to handle. Currently a 250 watt PSU is installed.
    HP Pavillion p6744y
    Windows 7 64-bit

It is highly unlikely that a 750 watt power supply will fit/work in your HP Pavilion 500-164 Desktop Computer. It is also completely unnecessary, as largest graphics card you can put in this computer will never use 1/4 of that power. Please consider the Corsiar CX500, CX500M, CX600, and CX600M for your power supply needs. These power supplies are the same physical size as the factory unit and are known to fit and work in most HP full-sized consumer desktop computers.

  • Adding drives, proc upgrade: Power Supply? Heat?

    Hello All,
Thinking of installing a total of 4 Internal Hard Drives, and a dual 1.6ish processor. Wondering if there are any Power Supply and/or heat issues I need to consider.
    Current set-up:
    PM G4 QS 867
    1.5GB RAM
Power Supply is original: AcBel APlPC12..."Total 344W MAX."
Video Card is original AGP GeForce2 MX 32MB VRAM
    Apple 17" Studio Display
    Thinking of adding:
    2 Maxtor Ultra ATA/133 200GB drives in the U-Carrier
2 Hitachi Deskstar SATA 500GB drives, 1 in each of the remaining bottom bays
All controlled via a Projovian "2-Port SATA and ATA133 Dual Connection PCI Host Adapter Card"
and further down the line a dual processor in the 1.6 to 2.0 GHz range.
Intended use is primarily FCP and some Photoshop.
    Any thoughts or warnings?
    Thanks so much,
    Patterson

That should be fine, in regards to power. As for heat, well it could get a little warm in there once you upgrade the CPU. You might want to get a PCI slot exhaust fan once you put the new CPU in there.

  • Upgrading POWER SUPPLY

My Lenovo 3000 J110 (Type 7393) come with a Liteon 280W ATX power supply. Ther is no more option in Lenovo part list more than 280W. Can I change the power supply to a bigger one (like 400W)?

there is nothing wrong with just upgrading to a better power supply only thing is it might use a little more energy
but it is a good idea to get a good power supply since the one it comes with is small and most vid cards will ask for more power

  • Does this intermittent failure point to power supply or BIOS issues or something else?

My 1.5-year-old computer has experienced the following scenario twice in the past 3 months.
I press power button to start it up, nothing happens: nothing appears on screen, no beeps, no other signs of life (but the light in the power button itself does briefly light).
After trying all the obvious things, I try repeatedly hitting F2 immediately after hitting the power button. This brings up a diagnostic screen. I run all the diagnostics, none reports an error, I proceed to boot Windows and all is normal.
A few weeks later, exactly the same sequence of events.
(I've also run iolo System Mechanic Pro and numerous other utilities, they report and fix registry errors but don't tell me anything useful.)
    Thanks.

  • G5 died - can't reboot at all - is this likely to be the power supply?

    Hi,
My G5 appears to have committed Hari Kari.
For no apparent reason it restarted itself three times in the space of about forty-five minutes. Then it just shut down altogether with a weird kind of electrical burning smell. Now I can't get anything out of it. Kind of clicks when I push the power button but that's about it.
Doesn't sound too hopeful does it? Any suggestions appreciated!
DP 2.5ghz G5   Mac OS X (10.4.7)   +WD Raptor internal drive, Echo Layla 3G PCI audio interface

OK, a bit more info on the symptoms.
When I plug in the power I hear what sounds like a relay click.
When I press the power button I hear a similar click, power LED flashes on very briefly then goes off. Nothing else. No fans, no 'boing', nada!
I tried the 'sniff test' and there is a smell of burning but it's impossible to tell where its coming from.
It it worth me trying removing RAM, resetting whatever it is where you have to press the button on the logic board etc or does this sound like its beyond all that?

  • What power supply do I need for a dead AGP G4 with upgraded processor

I recently upgraded my 400Mhz G4 to a dual 500Mhz board and a bigger, faster HD. I also replaced the internal battery but now the Mac... she is dead. No power, no lights, no nothing.
Will I need an upgraded power supply for the new board, or is it just old and time for a replacement power supply.
I found this on Ebay... will it work?
"This 237W Astec power supply (Apple part# 614-0108) is a clean, working pull from a revision 2 Power Mac G4 AGP Graphics/Sawtooth series computer (e.g. 350/400/450/500 MHz single processor) and will also work perfectly in previous models as well. "
    Thanks!
    AGP G4, Dual 500, 768Mb RAM   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

    Hi,
The AGP Sawtooth Mac can be switched to an ATX PSU. Later models (Gigabit G4, Digital Audio, Quicksilver and later) have a different power supply and motherboard that passes 28 Volts DC from the power supply to a connector for the ADC port graphics card. (28 VDC is passed to the Graphics card ADC port to power Apple's ADC monitors, introduced in Summer 2000 MWNY.) A standard PC ATX Power Supply does not have 28V DC and will not be pin compatible with the Gigabit G4 and later G4 systems.

Hello I'm thinking about upgrading my K450e power supply because I plan to upgrade the video card to a GTX 960 at a later date. • Controlling HP E3632A Power Supply

Problem Description : I need help with controlling the HP E3632A Power Supply. I used the instrument driver from your website, but it does not seem to work well. Here is the link to the driver I used:
    http://zone.ni.com/idnet97.nsf/9b2b33e1993d877786256436006ec498/0817568e8af393c5862568ab005fbd3d?OpenDocument
I upgraded all the necissary software to use the driver, but it does not work properly. When I tried using the sample Getting Started program on the driver and told it to ramp the power supply to 5 volts, it only went to 3 volts. Also I would like to know how you would program labview to make the power supply go to a certain voltage and maintain it. I want the power supply to send out a constant voltage for a certain period
    of time.
The only thing the Power Supply is connected to is the GPIB card. The getting started VI does not maintain the voltage. When i set it to go to 1 volt it goes there, but then drops back down. I want it to maintain the
    voltage

I don't have this instrument available to test with directly, so I can only offer some suggestions.
First of all, it looks like the menus aren't quite right, so you have to load the Getting Started VI with File -> Open, not through the palette menus. I think you figured this out, though.
I think the main subVI you want to use is "Configure Output". If you just use a simple program with Initialize, Configure Output and Close, does it maintain the voltage?
If not, then I would try leaving out the Close. Does this make a difference?
If you are using Windows, you might also try using NI-Spy to look at the messages being sent to the instrument. Maybe you can figure out that the driver is explicitly resetting the instrument. If so, we can look at th
e driver more closely and figure out how to avoid this.
I hope this helps you get started.
