Would you recommend buying microsoft for mac or just using iWorks?

I will be a new macbook user and am purchasing a pro (not retina) for college. I already have a laptop and use microsofts applications (word, powerpoint ect) daily. I am trying to figure out if this will be a large or small ajustment.

Use one of the many better alternatives to the M$ Office bloatware available today. Your adjustment will be pain-free.
Consider
LibreOffice (donation-supported)
NeoOffice ($10 but older version is free)
OpenOffice (completely free)
In addition to the above I also recommend Apple's Pages ($19.99). I use OpenOffice and Pages and have been completely Microsoft - free for over a year now. Life is better without Microsoft.

See this from Apple's Online Store. I suggest you do some research before you make any product purchasing decision. It's apparent that you haven't visited the Online Store site or a local Apple Store.

  • Would you recommend OSX Cocktail for a disk utility?

I think I need more than my built-in Mac disk utility to keep my machine clean and running well. Is there only the one "OSX Cocktail" version 4.7.2 and does anyone here use it and think that it's useful?

I have Onyx, but don't use it, not liking any app that does things without allowing you to control its actions. For disk directory issues, I recommend DiskWarrior, and for better disk repairing than Disk Utility, I use TechTool Pro 5 (Apple provides TechTool Deluxe as part of its AppleCare package). • What applications would you recommend to download for school?

I just recently bought an IPad... I would like to know what you would recommend to download that would be helpful for school

Evernote is really good because it has a MAc counter part app so you can have your notes and other things between your iPad and computer, if it is a Mac. The graphing calculator app (any of them) are helpful for homework in Math. And the rest would just be for specific majors or classes. but evernote is a life saver

  • Would you recommend buying the iphone?

I need a pda of sorts for work and it seems that there are many issues with ical. Is it just new and needs to work the kinks out or should you wait for the next generation to come out?

When you say, Nokia hasn't got anything on the iPhone, this is completely understandable because of the lack of quality networks here in the US. I am quite sure you never had a phone with HSDPA, or a phone with a 5 megapixel camera, multi-thread SMS, etc.... It is hard to miss or acknowledge what you never had. To give you an example of what you have missed, please find the spec sheet of the Nokia N82 below. When compared side by side the iPhone is the clear loser.
N82 has 5 Megapixels camera with autofocus, HSPDA, WLAN and GPS with free maps.
N82 is the second model from Nokia with a 5 megapixles camera and auto-focus. The Nokia N95 is still located at the top of the list when we talk about features but N82 is not far behind. N82 looks very much like the N95 specification wise. N82 has the more usual block form factor compared to the N95 slider. Current N95 retail price is 570 Euro. Expected retail price for the N82 is 450 Euro. Both models have the same display resolution of 240x320 pixels, built in GPS, the same operating frequencies, 5 megapixel camera with auto-focus, video recording etc. Seems like Nokia is phasing out the N95 in favour to the N82 and the N95 8GB version. We can not see any good reason why anyone would go for the more expensive N95 now that the N82 is announced.

  • Would you recommend an imac 27" or a Macbook Pro 15" retina display?

Portability does not matter at all in this case. Would you recommend buying a Macbook pro 15" or an imac 27".  Can you list some pro's and con's? Thank you very much!

To piggy back on what rkaufmann87 has already said,  watching HD videos on a 27" screen is always more enjoyable than watching them on a 15" screen,  even if there's more pixels on the smaller screen.    I have a 27" iMac and a 15" rMBP and each serve their purpose.   I have a USB HD Tuner and can watch over the air channels on my iMac.   That 27" screen makes it just like another TV.

You can't run iMovie 11 on a PPC G5 running the old OS 10.3 Panther - which is what you say you have.

  • Would you recommend a friend to buy a MBPro ?

    So lets see...
Would you recommend a friend or girlfriend/boyfriend/husband/wife to rush out first thing in the morning and buy a MBP ?? Be honest...
I wil start: From what I am reading on here and other places on the web, my answer is emphatically NO !

Syntrak, I believe you don't own one so you only know
    about the MBP by reading.
I do own one, and my answer is an emphatic YES, but
only IF the person asking really needs or wants such
a powerful portable. A lot of power and features in
such slim and small package comes with some
drawbacks: Shorter battery life is one of them.
I think I said it before, this MBP Rocks BABY!
I could not agree more and couldn't have written this any better. I haven't felt this great about a new Mac in a long time. Can't wait for FCP Suite Universal to arrive to put through it's paces. Needless to say, the MBP is on all day and into the late evening hours. It Rocks! Don't have any second thoughts.

Thank you for your quick response. I can then use a ZIP drive for data storage. I want to keep as much of my hard drive free of data as possible.

  • I now have Lion on my laptop, and now I cannot get Word, or Office or anything. Do I have to buy the new Microsoft for Mac

I now have Lion on my laptop, and now I cant get Word, or Office or any of my Microsoft for Mac stuff to work. Do I have to buy a new version of all this now that the operating software is Lion instead of leopard?

Support for Office 2004 went away when Lion adandoned support for the Rosetta emulator that let Snow Leopard and earlier run old PPC programs like Office 2004 on an Intel Mac.
The first version of Office that runs natively on an Intel Mac is Office 2008. The current version is Office 2011 and should offer no problems.
Your choice of Office version depends on whether you count on Entourage as your mail client. Office 2008 was the last version to include Entourage. With Office 2011, Entourage was replaced by a Mac version of Outlook BUT you must buy the more expensive "business" version to get Outlook. It does not come with the more affordable "Home/Student" edition.

  • Would you recommend the AppleCare plan for iPad?

    Hello, All
I got an iPad for Christmas (my first Apple product), and I'm trying to decide whether to buy the AppleCare plan for it.
Does anyone have any experience with using the AppleCare plan, or getting support for a broken iPad without the plan? Would you recommend getting it?

In the past, with computers that could be opened and fixed by replacing parts, a service plan was not particularly advantageous for those who could swap out a dead HD and put in a new one. When laptops arrived, many thought that since it was a "closed system", it would be best to get a contract. I'd say with the iPad, it's really a closed system for most of us, and buying a plan may be as prudent as for laptops - but then there's the price to consider, given the price of the iPad. I think you can buy a plan anytime before the original warranty expires, so you could hold off.

  • What kind of camcorder would you recommend for FCE HD 3.5?

    Hello everyone,
I'm very new here and have been trying to search for the answer to my question without having to bug anyone, but now I am under the gun, as it were.
I need to purchase something within a week and a half and would truly appreciate suggestions from anyone here. Here are a list of my questions and I hope you all will be kind of enough to help me. Thank you in advance.
1- I would prefer a camcorder that records to a DVD, but if tape is way better, please let me know.
2- I see that FCE does not support AVCHD. What other pitfalls are there to avoid in purchasing a camcorder that is compatible with FCE HD?
3- My dream is to have a camcorder that can record in 24p, but can't seem to determine whether FCE HD can support it. Please help!
4- Am willing to pay more for CCD sensor range - is this helping?
5-Would like to shoot in 16:9 ratio and with lines of resolution of 720 and higher, this possible with FCE?
5- With the questions above...what camcorder would you recommend?
I know some of the camcorders that have these features are ranging from $900 to over $1,000 but would consider it a good investment for things I would like to do in the future.
I hope the information I've given is enough for you all to give your suggestions. Thank you again.

They are not bad - just unsuitable for FCE and all good editing programs.
There are several totally different kinds of Digital Video - many people mistakenly think all "digital" is the same.
DVD, Flash Memory or Hard Disk camcorders produce video in a version of the MPEG format.
FCE etc. only handles video in the DV or QT format which is totally different from MPEG.
One analogy would be to buy a diesel powered car and then find that all the filling stations in your area only had petrol (gasolene) pumps. Your car would be pretty useless !
The only way MPEG can be used in FCE is by converting it to DV or QT which wastes time or money and results in slightly reduced quality.
All these cameras are produced for the mass market (where the money is), to be used by people with no knowledge or interest in film-making or editing.
    Ian.

  • I just bought a macbook pro and am ready to order Microsoft Office for Mac. I use Windows 2007 at work and want to be sure I am able to work with files from that system. Do I need to buy 2 different editions of Microsoft Office to be able to do this?

Do I need to buy 2 different Microsoft Office products if I want to be able to use my new Mac with Microsoft Office for Mac and also use files saved on my work computer which uses Microsoft Window 2007?

Sorry, but your likely going to have to use Windows 7 and Office on your Mac at work using Bootcamp.
Although you can share files OfficeMac and Office on Windows, the formatting will be off because two platforms use different installed fonts and formatting. This will cause a productivity lost and require extra editing at work
If you could share just PDF's then your fine, but that will unlikely be the case.
So to share files seamlessly your going to have to install Windows 7 (another $300) full version, 64 bit, using Apple's Bootcamp.
    https://www.apple.com/support/bootcamp/
It's ok, though, you can boot into OS X to use that online and surfing etc at home. It's the internet and sharing of files from other Windows users that cause Windows to hoze up, so mimimalize both of those and you should be fine.
You can also run Windows 7 in a virtual machine software like Parallels or VMFusion. as long as you don't have any super demanding needs of the hardware, like running 3D games or super intense CPU actions like video processing. Office work is just fine and it's safer than Bootcamp, as in a virtual machine you can keep "snapshots" of previous states of the OS, and revert back to in case something goes wrong in mere seconds.
A real good piece of news though, Windows 8 is so radically changed from Windows 7, that your workplace will remain with Windows 7 as long as possible to put off all the retraining necessary with that new OS version.
So think of the $300 + $60 investment in Windows on your Mac as a longterm thing.

  • I have a great number of Hi8 video tapes and I would like to burn them onto CDs through MacBook Pro (ME665LL/A), but I do not know how to transfer those footage into Mac. What would you recommend?

Hello everybody! My question is; my parents and I have a great number of video tapes (Hi8 and mini DV) and since I purchased a MacBook Pro (ME665LL/A) I would like to burn them onto CDs, but I do not know how to transfer those footage into Mac. What would you recommend(it can be a software, a hardware or combination of both)? By the way, I also purchased an external DVD-RW(Asus SDRW-08D2S) separately.

Just Google "convert hi8 to dvd" and you'll find a number of software/hardware combinations that will allow you to do what you want. One important piece of the puzzle is whether or not you still have access to the video recorder(s) that the movies were shot on.
    Good luck,
    Clinton
