Would you use Macbook 13" as a DAW?

Would you use Logic on these new Macbooks? May be with a bigger monitor? It seems it's faster than the lower end Macbook pro (1.83).

Hey swan,
I don't know the specs, but usually "pro" machines have faster bus speeds than "consumer" machines. That makes the transfer of data faster in the "pro" machines. So, if you have two machines, one pro and one consumer, next to each other, with the same processor speed and you were to run, lets say Logic on both, doing exactly the same thing, the pro machine should be faster.
That's not to say that the Macbook isn't good enough to run Logic. I can't imagine them being slower than the last generation of Powerbook.

  • What sequence setting would you use to edit 1280 x1080 DVCProHD (P2) and 1920 x 1080 AVCHD (Sony) in FCP. Experiencing Quality and rendering issues.

    What sequence setting would you use to edit both 1280 x1080 DVCProHD (P2) and 1920 x 1080 AVCHD (Sony) in a single timeline in FCP. I'm experiencing quality and rendering issues.  I've tried numerous settings but can't seem to figure this one out.  Thanks for your assistance.

    Although you can combine the avchd 1920x1080 material with prores 1920x1080 in the same timeline, you might land up saving time just converting everything to 1920x1080 prores 422.   You'd probably reduce the amount of rendering while you're working and exporting when you're done by a great deal.  This workflow will require much more drive space.

    What camera raw default settings would you use for the Canon 5D Mark 3. I have PS CS6.  Thank you.

    Really, this is a question you should be asking yourself...
    What do you shoot? Makes a difference...
    Typical ISO that you shoot? Makes a difference...
    Shooting for clients or yourself? Makes a difference...
    Look, there is no magic bullet...the ACR/LR "Default" should only be changed for those adjustments you make 70-90% of the time and sould not be confused with image by image adjustments...
    So, as asked, your question can not really be answered other than to say, use a default that suits you.

    Hi Laci,
    There are quite a few mobile printers, for example HP does a range of battery powered Officejet printers which you could use on the go. For instance, check this out:

  • Would you recommend Macbook Pro?

    Hi folks,
    I've been an owner of an iBook ('snow' model) for about 5 years and I'm in the market for a replacement computer. My past experiences with the iBook have been stellar, it's never had a major problem (there are some minor gripes btw). However because of the tiny screen size, I've sworn off of buying another 'non-pro' apple notebook.
    I mainly use my computer for typing papers and surfing the web and occasional photo editing. I just want something that will last me a good number of years and still be usable. Would you recommend the macbook pro?

    My reply may be a little late but I thought I'd throw it in just the same. There are some very good replies here, especially those from Digital Dude and cgerrells. My apologies for what will likely be a lengthy reply because I have yet to share my story with this community. Perhaps now is the time.
    I would certainly recommend a Macbook Pro to anybody that had the budget, was looking for a near-desktop replacement computer, and was into prosumer-level capability for an audio and video editing (and similar duty) workhorse. This could be for anything from a hobby-level to professional level or both. Mine is a 15-incher with 1GB (needs to bump to 2) and the 7200RPM 100GB HDD. I tried BootCamp, which was very good, but I hated restarting. I decided to run with the Parallels Beta, purchased the pre-release license, and now that it is released, I haven't looked back. I absolutely LOVE it. My XP-only stuff is great. Some people still have issues with Parallels and some people have some lingering problems with the MBP itself. But I am fortunate, I guess. For now, this is my second MBP (first one was DoA), and I am very, very happy with it.
    My very, very long story. Skip it, if you like:
    I too was once a hardcore PC-only user. Never would an Apple grace the insides of my home or office. I could never consider the artsy-fartsy-ness of a Mac, no matter how well they were made or how good the customer service was supposed to be. They were just too expensive and too exclusive. I was basically a PC snob, much like many Mac users are Mac snobs, you know? I was/am not a PC novice, either. IT Pro doesn't exactly describe my profession; it's not exactly that simple. I have more than a decade of experience in MIS and a graduate degree but I'm more on the high end of my company's IT shop. MS SQL and management and stuff like that. So I was a Windows guy through and through. I do audio and video editing both for a hobby and semi-professionally. Digital photography is the same kind of deal for me. But I did all that on the PC just fine. My house was like a server farm. I had 4 or 5 PCs at any one time. There were even a few Linux distros just for fun. Windows 2003 domain for testing with Exchange 2003 in there for good measure. I guess there was a Toshiba laptop or two.
    Then one day last year (some time before they announced the plans for the switch to Intel CPUs) I got a wild hair to buy a Mini. They were so cheap, I just wanted to try out the audio softwares and such. And with a simple KVM switch, I could add it to my desk here at home.
    I had trouble at first. It just didn't make sense to me. After a while, I let the Mini just sit. Maybe six weeks went by. I got back into it and learned how integrate the Mini into my production studio. Things were looking up. I began to like OS X.
    Then I began to need a new laptop. Back then I didn't know Apple had changed the meaning of the word.
    But I had the feeling I should wait until I saw what Apple would come up with. They had announced the Intel CPU deals. People had begun "hacking" together ways to run Windows on these new Macs. Things really began looking good. Then Apple announced the MacBook Pro. I really wanted one of those very much.
    When was that? February?
    So I started to figure out if I could buy one.
    By April, they announced Boot Camp. This sort of (un)officially supporting dual-booting XP sealed the deal. I ordered the sucker.
    Aside from the terrible ordeal of spending the $$$ and then having to return the DoA and waiting for the replacement (and dealing with the scumbags I had to deal with at Apple Care) I am very happy with my laptop.
    If you chose to read this terribly long story, thank you very much.

  • What function would you use instead of "IF" when referencing durations from a pop-up menu. Ie; if c4 equals 1h enter 280, if c4 equals 30m enter 160, etc. IF works fine if c4 is formatted as text but returns 0 when formatted as pop-up.

    What function similar to IF would one use when the reference cell is a pop-up menu of items in duration format?
    Example: if C4 equals 1h enter 280, if C4 equals 30m enter 160, etc
    i can get it to work fine if I format the cell to text but I not only need it pop-up, I also need it to be written in duration format because it's used as duration in other functions.
    thank you for your help in advance
    Christina

    Hi Christina,
    A screenshot is always helpful.
    C4 is your popup? You want to chose a duration there and have 280 or 160 show up somewhere else? Are they the results of a mathmatical formula or do you want a lookup table to show them?
    I suspect something else is going on in your table. I have no trouble having a popup recognized as a duration:
    The formula in C2  =DUR2MINUTES(B2) displaying "60" as expected. Note that "60" is not a duration. If I want C2 to be a duration I need the formula to read:
    =DUR2MINUTES(B2)&"m".
    I hope this helps, if not, post a screenshot including relevant formulas.

  • How would you use Aperture 3 Labels & Flags in your workflow?

    Now that A3 has the ability to use Labels & Flags, I'm trying to incorporate their use into my workflow but am struggling to find the most effective way.
    I've used the star rating for selections & refining the selections. In A2 I used keywords on images to indicate actions on the images, however I never thought this was an elegant solution because unless I forget to remove them they stay with the images as I export them. Fundamentally though I think of Keywords as attributes of the image, so using keywords to describe actions was always strange.
    One thing I liked with this workflow though was I could place multiple "actions" on an image since there can be any number of keywords. In A3 you can only assign one labe at a time. So this made me think of how I'd use Labels.
    So thus my question: how would you incorporate labels & flags into your existing workflows consisting of star ratings & keywords?

    I've wanted flags for a long time just to be able to mark where I left off on a project. My inelegant solution has been to give a terrible picture 5 stars. Other uses are to quickly get back to certain images.
    I don't yet know how exactly I'll use labels or what other uses I'll have for flags, but I'm happy to have the added versatility. Between flags and labels, I have 8 new ways to mark and filter images. (10 if you count no flag and no label.) Sure one can do a lot with stars, stacks and keywords, but now one can do more.

  • API design style I've never seen before - would you use it?

    I was Googling for examples of a "Bean Comparator" and came across this strange API design I've never seen before (is it just me?). I'm curious if you have seen it before and what you think about it?
    [http://cojen.sourceforge.net/apidocs/org/cojen/util/BeanComparator.html]
    The basic problem is to create a Comparator that can sort on multiple fields within a given class.
    First, a more traditional(?) API design might be something like:
    Constructor Summary:
         BeanComparator(Class theClass);
    Method Summary:
         addSortField(String fieldName, boolean isAscending, boolean isSortNullHigh);
         addSortField(String fieldName); // convenience method with default ascending and sortNullHigh
    So you could create a BeanComparator that sorts on multiple fields by using:
    BeanComparator bc = new BeanComparator(SomeClass.class);
    bc.addSortField("field1");
    bc.addSortField("field2", false, true);
    bc.addSortField("field3", true, false);Finally, without listing the API, the equivalent code for the "strange API design" would be:
    Comparator c = BeanComparator.forClass(SomeClass.class)
         .orderBy("field1")
         .orderBy("field2")
         .reverse();
         .orderBy("field3")
         .nullLow();So in this case:
    a) there is no explicit "add" method to add a new sort field. The "orderBy" is an implicit add.
    b) the reverse() and nullLow() methods only apply to the current orderBy field.
    c) the creation of the class is "sequential" in nature as each method needs to be invoked in the proper order
    In some ways this seems to simplify the API because you don't need lots of convenience methods or your don't need to use the full method and then restate the default values.
    Also you can add new sort options to the API without affecting any existing methods.
    What do you think of this type of API design?
    Have you ever used it before?
    Would you consider using this design and in what situations would you consider it?

    What part is bothering you exactly? Its not that it bothers me, its just that it is "different" and I was wondering if it is an acceptable design of a class and when you would use it, since I don't think I've seen any examples in the JDK.
    Usually the order of method invocation is not important. You can do:
    component.setFont()
    component.setBackground()or
    component.setBackground()
    component.setFont()However
    orderBy()
    orderBy()
    reverse()is not the same as
    orderBy()
    reverse()
    orderBy()So the API implies a "building" approach where you need to know you are building the components of the class in a certain order.
    Again, its not bad, its just different (to me) so I was wondering if it is common and when you would use it.
    The fact that the methods return the object itself...No, I've seen that pattern before and find it handy.
    Your example (addSortField) also depends on the order in which the methods are called.Yes, but this is normal for most APIs. For example adding items to a Vector, or components to a panel.
    In this case the orderBy() method implies a change of state because the next set of methods may or may not modify the state of the field being ordered.
    Again, I said I thought that this potentialy does simplify the API, but I have not seen it used before.
    I don't see the design as much of a problem. Me either.

  • Would you use scripts to take database out of archivelog mode?

    Background: we do not use RMAN for this production database and we do cold backups each night.
    I've been asked to take one of our databases out of archivelog mode for a few days and then to put it back into archivelog mode.
    Being somewhat neurotic about these things - I've only ever done it manually - so that I can make sure nothing goes wrong and to check that there was a last successful cold backup prior to the switch.
    However, management have asked that it be done automatically by scripts after the backup.
    Whilst I can create a script that will do this - the question I'd like to ask the forum is - have you and would you?

    I do not agree with taking any Oracle database out of archivelog mode and I do not approve of management's decision and have told them why and all the risks they run.
    This is not a test database - it IS a production database and other users do make changes daily.
    What I did not reveal until now is that I have also been asked to take this database out of archivelog mode for 5 days and suspend all cold back-ups for the whole server (with 3 other instances on the server - also impacted) - and have warned them accordingly.
    However, management have been swayed by someone who feels they know better - who claims to be a qualified Oracle DBA - I'm OCP but seems to have little sway since this person has convinced management that my 6 years experience and qualification is less than his application experience in GIS.
    They want to run an upload which will take around 5 days to do - I'm somewhat miffed that an upload can take that length of time and question whether a GIS system should need such an upload for such a length of time.
    Let's no go into the problem with tablespaces and space within the tablespaces - the upload will fail because they do not understand that if the tablespace fills up - the upload will fail - but despite asking - I've been told that there is no problem - there will be a problem - since I refuse to allow autoextend on this database - because of the potential to run out of disk space.
    I've explained until I'm blue in the face - never mind that even if the upload is successful - the cold backup tape won't be able to backup the data because it'll be potentially over the limit.
    I've even warned of my past experience x 3 - when a RAID controller failed - literally died in front of my eyes - I just happened to be standing next to one of the servers talking to someone - and the whole server was lost - but because we had the archivelogs - and the previous day's backup - we got it up and running after Dell replaced the RAID controller - within 1 hour.
    That's the joy of Oracle - nothing is lost other than the last archivelog - depending on the time you set the switch.
    I love this system - it's so recoverable - it such a joy to work with.
    But then when I get told to suspend cold backups and then at the same time suspend archivelog mode - I go mad.
    Don't get me started - I've gone down the usual path of why hire an OCP when you won't listen to what I say, etc.
    Management are demanding I switch it automatically out of archivelog mode etc.
    I can do it - but my question is still - have you guys?
    And why did you do it?
    All I can say is that I hope that the server has a RAID contoller failure and finally they listen to me - the chances of that are minimal - so management are saying - do it or else.
    Oh and by the way - the GIS team have asked for this to be bi-monthly - automated.
    And have said that:
    "You can not rollback or recover the loading process using the log files because it involves a far more complex operation that would most likely not be successful."
    Nice phrase that to an OCP.
    I welcome your comments - as I really am in a hole here.
    Thanks.
