Wouldn't it be cool if...

Just thinkin.. Imagine if Logic had:
1) dedicated buttons to toggle monitoring the headphone bus or main stereo outs?
2) A "take" folder for mixer automation (like the tempo alternative list), so you could save several different mixes in one project?
3) a built-in talkback system where all you'd need to set is where your console mic is, and what MIDI control you want to use for toggling talkback on/off
4) simple and easy MIDI volume/pan automation of multi-timbral VI's
5) a "burn" button that works like the 'freeze' button, but destructively applies all your plugin effects to the audio track, replacing the audio with a newly created file including all your plugin eq, compression, etc. (The 'burn' button would also turn MIDI tracks into audio tracks).
Just dreamin. If any of these matter to you as well, please post in Apple's Logic feedback page, on the off chance that it may one day have an effect.
I realize some of these missing features can be cobbled together in the environment page, but that is neither simple nor reliable on a day to day, project to project basis. I sure hope the next Logic release includes at least a few nods to the "control room features" seen in other competing DAW's. It would do alot to improve Logic's workflow in a studio environment.
I think...

Good ideas.
(2) would be useful, and (5) is 'bounce in place' which should have been included already.
While we're in 'wish list' mode:
Trim level control built in to every channel strip
Round trip latency calculation and compensation for outboard gear ('ping')
Separate input/output device selection (goodbye 'aggregate device' for simple setups)
All posted to feedback. Often.

Wouldn't is be cool if Apple were to put a video input on the iMac which would allow you to utilize the iMacs screen with a ibook, powerbook, or MB/MBP. You could plug your laptop into the iMac and use spaces to switch between the iMac and your laptop. Yeah you could buy their new external display but that takes up room if you already have an iMac to utilize.

If you have any second display connected as an extended Desktop, Spaces switches +the one space+ that is displayed on BOTH displays at the same time. So it would not used to switch between the two screens since the two screens are forming one Desktop.
You can use this program and VNC to make one Mac's screen act as the second display for other.

I use it to make an old PC laptop with Ubuntu Linux act as the third screen for my iMac.

  • Wouldn't it be cool if your could do iMessages from the iCloud browser on any computer?

I like the way you can start an iMessage conversation on one device and continue on another.  It would be better yet if I could log into any browser, as I can with other iCloud stuff, and continue iMessaging from there.  This means I could even message from my [Windows XP] work computer (I don't get a choice), even where I don't have cellphone signal to use my iphone or ipad.

    Tell Apple, not us.

iMessage works fine on Macs running OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion.

  • Wouldn't it be cool if we could name the Adjustment Brush?

That is a feature I underuse just because I find it confusing to navigate throught when we do 2-3 Adjustments Brush on the same photo.
I think it would be nice if Lightroom 4 would permit to name each adjustment brush, so that we can remember what was done in that particular one. A bit like naming Photoshop layers.

I've heard that request a few times Steve.  Might I suggest adding it as a suggestion on the Feature Request forum http://feedback.photoshop.com/photoshop_family where it can easily be tracked?  I have a feeling there's already a similar request there, that you could add your vote too, but I can't find it right now.

  • Wouldn't It Be Cool If Spiceworks Had Their Own TV Show On Roku?

For me it would need to be a deep dive into specific topics.  Without all the marketing stuff.

I use Roku since I got fed up with the high cost of cable subscriptions.  I haven't missed the cable company a bit.  On Roku there are several "techie" channels offered, some are public and others are private, such as Microsoft's "Channel 9".  I was thinking what it would be like to have a Spiceworks channel on Roku.  What kind of programming could they offer?  If they had one, and you were a Roku user, would you watch?

-AT&T’s EDGE cellular network: "excruciatingly slow"

-halfway decent internal speakers for listening if you set the thing down
-iPod games are not compatible with iPhone?
-No way to copy/paste text, are you kidding?
-Voice call quality good, but not great
-Can't record video, are you kidding?
-Songs can't be set as ringtones? I think this issue will change in iTunes 7.3 though
-can’t download songs or movies from itunes directly from phone?? c'mon

    -no GPS, but close
-no SmartTyping for Safari OR looking up contacts??? c'mon
-No Microsoft Office, no “Significant” 3rd party apps
-Isn’t the speaker & mic on BOTTOM of phone pretty useless when in dock? Don't know
-iPhone’s web should run on AT&T’s fastest web technology, NOT EDGE
    -“true” world phone? maybe...
    -No black dock
-8GB is an amazing accomplishment for a phone, but a huge downfall in “iPod world” when iPods are up to 80GB now

-no iChat, which means no instant messaging, just text messaging

-Can’t send media through SMS text
-Can’t send same text to multiple people
-Can’t scan (wouldn’t that be cool?)
-Date doesn’t show, except for the Calendar Icon sorta shows you date
-Calendar should work a lot more like iCal (event categories missing, landscape view missing, to-dos missing, ability to tap time to create event)
-Calendar not syncing correctly with iCal (at least for me using a Leopard seed)
-Can’t custom resize video or zoom in
    -Keyboard doesn’t rotate
    -Notes doesn’t rotate
-needs a file browser to be able to open docs and images that you've synced to your phone.. somehow.. (isync support?)
-A file system needs to be apparent so you can easily do things like attach multiple files in an email
-gets scorching hot if left on bed while you’re using it
-Alarm doesn’t allow an alert message to go along with your alarm (reminder)
-Weather app on home screen should change sun/moon/cloud images & temperature for your primary city without having to open the actual app, similar to how Calendar changes date without having to open app
-no Empty Trash function for e-mail and voicemail
-would be cool if had guitar tuning capability
-can’t send files via Bluetooth. What the **** is it on the phone for then besides headset?
    -email is “non-landscapable”
-no free rotate in move and scale mode or anywhere for that matter (with photos)
-iPod Cover Flow doesn’t show custom-made album artwork (.jpg,.png, .tif, etc)
-can’t log in to your YouTube account via YouTube app
-mic should act as 2nd speaker when not used as mic (if possible)
-Bluetooth not finding any devices (at least for me)
-No undo, especially when editing your contacts makes it a nightmare
-Add Field entries made under Contacts editing should be stored so user can easily use the entry again
-Contacts need a default Comments or Notes label
-In Contacts, user should be able to move/sort/arrange custom labels to their liking
-option to hear sounds every time you press a button, not only keyboard
-ability to choose sound for a particular function, for example, say you didn’t like the “New Voicemail” sound, you should be able to change it like you can do in a Treo
-certain photos won’t show up ONLY in “Add Photo” mode when editing Contacts, you just get a black screen
-iPhoto should not come to front of screen when syncing (it does for me in a Leopard seed I’m using)
-Ability to check for new mail every minute, not a minimum of 15!
-Option to keep current screen on when phone is locked for a certain amount of time, like a Treo
    -Wallpaper slideshow and video capability
If Apple thinks that they can intentionally leave “key” features out of the iPhone just to make us think that the iPhone2 is a “significant update”, then Apple isn’t the company I thought it was. Make your phone the “best” it can possibly be for the time it comes out. Don’t leave out “standard” smartphone technology that will make people think twice about trashing their Treo or Blackberry. Adding true GPS or upgrading the internal memory is a different story, but things like the inability to copy and paste, the inability to record video, and the inability to use voice dialing should definitely not be issues with iPhone’s release, especially due to the fact that Apple had more than six months to test the thing. I really hope Apple fixes a lot of these “flaws” immediately or else iPhone won’t be as successful and as respected as it could have been.
Just trying to help. Please forward this to the appropriate iPhone Development department.

  • How to make my Macbook Pro 13" Retina a long term laptop?

I just bought a Macbook Pro 13" with Retina Display and I need to use this laptop until I finish college  (still in 3rd year highschool)
I have 3 questions concerning my mac
    1. Up to how long will this computer function? (years)
    2. What are the things that will make my Mac lose it's function?
    3. What are the things I need to do so that this Mac live forever or until I finish college?

With that said, pay attention to LousyFool's advice above.
    Thanks John.
I'd like to add to what you said that I have here a few Macs, all portables with the exception of one Mini, and the oldest is a white MacBook from 2006, which is still frequently in use. The battery is anything but really useful, admittedly, but it runs okay under Lion, and a student would probably be still happy with it unless he needed to run heavy CAD, DTP, video or photo editing on it. Or games, hehe. Oh, and of course, he wouldn't be as cool as that guy with the brand-new 11" MBA under his arm...

  • Where do I send a long list of problems I have with non-functionality with the Lion OSX and new Safari for Lion.

In the past two weeks I have been documenting my Lion problems.
First, Arrows gone from finder windows; makes it difficult in comparing long lists of files in folder, or compare documents when reviewing line by line. This is obviously a change by people who do not compare long lists in windows comparing files between versions of projects ... the click to next screen is NOT equal to arrows.
Second, Finder Redreaw - doesn't. Move files to a fold, if there are a lot of files, they image of the files being moved remains in finder (see attached screen capture) until Finder is restarted and if COPY function is running. last files in Copy queue are not copied.
Screen capture 5 minutes after moving files to a folder - the selected file images are still in Finder after the move was completed.
Third, it is SLOW, particularly going to an "Attach file" in email, drawing the content of a folder to select an attachment is long enough for me to go to the kitchen, get a drink and come back. Just like the old days of OS7.
Fourth, shifting/recentering screen away from where I am working. Several programs, browsers, Adobe Photoshop/inDesign, and dear old Pages re center my screen - not to the center, but if I choose 30 of 70 images in a folder, it will shift … somewhere else in the folder instead of where I just clicked. If I am working on a document in inDesign or PhotoShop it will do the same - the cursor and screen drift elsewhere to find something it has been amused by. Sometimes it is a word, or a file, but often it is off the pastboard and on the etherial pasteboard on which the pages sit. Or if I'm zoomed in on an image, it moves to somewhere else.
I use a mouse and keyboard, both Apple wireless. I do not use a trackpad, but have a tablet/stylus I am afraid to put into the mix until this crap is stopped.
Fifth, SAVE AS… is gone. You must unlock, duplicate and edit the duplicate … and must rename it in Finder, or use EXPORT to save as the same format under a new name. SAVE AS… worked. Not broke, why fix it?
Personal Comment: The problems seem to be the triumph of coked up software engineers ooohing and aaahing over "Wouldn't it be cool if..."   Cool, if they were Microsoft, and required everyone change how they have worked on Macs for the past (almost) three decades. Triumph of brainstorming over functionality.
Sixth, I can't use Cocoa Booklet, but that really started in OSX 10.6 "Snow Leopard". Most of my X11/Cocoa programs stopped worked about that time. Apple is no longer supporting "open source"?
    But Wait! There's More...
Seventh, Tonight, trying to download a 1.7 gig archive onto a disk where 280 Gigs were supposedly free, it would not download because, according to the wonderful new Safari and the wonderful new Lion, there is not enough disk space to download a 1.7 gig file in a mere 280 Gigs of free space.
I might be able to move Snow Leopard onto the iMac, but my deciding factor was that Apple, in its wisdom, decided to make iBook Author unable to run under Snow Leopard. So moving to Snow Leopard means I have lost the ONLY benefit I get from the new computer and the new system.
    This really stinks.

  • Digital Connection with Audigy 4 and DTS5

    Hallo Everybody
I have the same Problem with the nice man in this post. (Felix2)
    http://forums.creative.com/creativelabs/board/message?board.id=soundblaster&message.id=46632&vie w=by_date_ascending&page=
Exactly same problems! I emaild the Support and they replied me just trash.
So my base problem and thats in the linked thread above is to get a standard audigy 4 not a pro! optical connected to the dts 5500 er Station.
Please do not tell something of 5channel sound and ac3 and ac3 and ac3 its useless.
Please do not ask me about my system config, all works fine, the audigy4 works fine, my dts works fine and the speaker too. (Ive testet it with the 3 pole minijack connecters of my audigy 4).
So all works, but the opticalDigital connection not. (And i dont want to get 5. sound, i just want to get some sound, at the moment no sound comes out)
se give a statement why optical/digital connections not work on your products.
-Please give a statement why this is that difficult/confused to connect.
And a big bravo to Felix2. I wouldn't stay that cool like you if I get some horrible and wrong answers, especially of a "professional". Maybe you have a solution do get the DTS 5500 and audigy 4 get optical connected?
    Greetings
    Lex

    Lex,
The information I gave Felix2 is not "horrible" or wrong, they are the truth. There is no need to start attacking again, if you are not clear on the information I gave in his thread, ask for more clarification, but do not attack.
If you are having problems getting it set up, it's best to provide some detail on what settings you have changed, how everything is configured, and someone will probably be able to help you.
The start of your post isn't very clear, do you have a standard Audigy 4 or an Audigy 4 Pro? The Audigy 4 Pro does have an optical output on the external dri'vebay, the standard Audigy 4 (just a card) does not have an optical output. You would need to connect through a coaxial input (minijack to RCA, then RCA-RCA).

  • Nano functions for iPod mini

    Hi all,
wouldn´t it be cool to have the new features of the iPod nano on the mini? It should be possible with a firmware update, I think. The screenlock is useful and the timer as well.

I am convinced that 1.4 was the cause of my 1st gen Mini's untimely death at just over 18 months.
Prior to upgrading to 1.4, the unit worked flawlessly and had only frozen on me three times in the entire time I owned it. I used it every day during my workout and in the car.
When I upgraded to 1.4, the unit froze within an hour of the upgrade and would not reboot for several hours. After it recovered, it continued to freeze every couple of days. I restored the software so many times, I lost count.
A few weeks later, after another in a series of forced resets, the display backlight stopped working. Then a few days later, the battery started to drain when the unit was in sleep mode over night. In the morning, the iPOD was totally dead and needed to be fully recharged.
A few days ago, the unit started playing only static through the headphone jack, and when placed on my JBL On Stage, CPU and HD noises were transmitted through the dock connector and out through the speakers while the iPOd was being updated through iTUNES.
    Coincidence?
    Who knows.
My new Silver 6G arrives today, so we shall see if it suffers from the same stability problems as my 4G did under 1.4.

  • Help with using multiple hard drives

Is there a way to install the OS on an "external" (expresscard SSD) drive, but have all of the library and data files on the primary hard disk? I LOVE the speed on my SSD, but it's a pain finding stuff now. Is this something a RAID configuration could help with?

    mwmmartin wrote:

Wouldn't it be cool if I could make the two external hard drives a RAID drive and use Time Machine to use all the 750GB of external memory to do my backups???
You can, but I would +*strongly recommend against+* it. See +Concatenated RAID+ in the Help for Disk Utility.
    There are several potential problems:
Depending on how much data is on your 1 TB drive, 750 GB may not be enough to back it up. See #1 in Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum).
To set up a +Concatenated RAID+ set, both drives will be erased.
When (not if) either drive fails, you'll lose all the data on both.
Both drives must be connected any time you do a backup or want to browse your backups.
Especially with USB, if one drive wakes from sleep, or spins up, quickly enough, but the other one doesn't, the backup may fail and/or your backups may be corrupted.
For now, it looks like my only solution is to go buy a bigger external hard drive and spend more money,,,
That's your best solution +*by far.+* Anything else is taking a large risk with your backups.

  • Wiki: Using multiple hard drives, LVM & encryption

I have lately found myself with the issue of having multiple hard drives and wanting to do LVM stuff & encryption with while retaining maximum flexibility. After scanning through wikis, manpages and forum entries I came up with a solution for myself. The only thing I don't cover with it is mounting while booting as I don't need and can't test it.
I want to share the knowledge I gained and help other people find a solution faster and so I wrote a Wiki entry (first on my user page). I would now like to hear the opinion of the community regarding the following questions:
Do you see any security risks with my solution (especially the part on storing the unencrypted keyfile on a ramdisk)?
Do you think this text is worthy for a wiki entry or should I keep it in the forums?
Do you spot any errors (typing or else)?
Would you improve this article anywhere?
Of course, if you have further comments, I would like to here them as well. And now without further ado: Using multiple hard drives, LVM & encryption.
    Regards,
    javex
P.S.: As a small side question: Is my user page a good playground for article creation or would you recommend some other area where to do this (since here noone else could improve the article while in this early stage)?

  • Connect to two wireless networks simultaneously

    Here's the scenario:
I would like to have my airport express connect to my stereo and I'd like to have my mac connect to that via air tunes while at the same time connecting to a time capsule or other wireless router for internet use and have them both operating simultaneously. So that means playing music and using the internet and having both networks active.
    Wouldn't that be cool?
I'd also like to have both my powerbook and my macbook doing that at the same time but they won't of course be sending to the airtunes setup at the same time.
Does anyone know if this is possible?
    thx

I would like to have my airport express connect to my stereo and I'd like to have my mac connect to that via air tunes while at the same time connecting to a time capsule or other wireless router for internet use and have them both operating simultaneously.
You can. You just need to reconfigure the AirPort Express Base Station (AX) to "join an existing wireless network" as a wireless client.
    Here's how ...
Either connect to the AX's wireless network or connect directly, using an Ethernet cable, to the Ethernet port of the AX, and then using the AirPort Utility in "Manual Setup" mode, make the following changes:
    AirPort > Base Station
o Base Station Name: <rename or leave default>
    o Base Station Password: <enter desired password>
    o Verify Password: <re-enter desired password>
o Remember this password in my keychain: (optional)
    o Set time automatically: (unchecked)
    AirPort > Wireless
o Wireless Mode: Join a wireless network
    o Network Name: <existing Time Capsule's wireless network>
o Wireless Security: <select the encryption type of the existing wireless network>
o Wireless Password: <enter the existing wireless network password>
o Verify Password: <re-enter the existing wireless network password>
    Music
    o Enable AirTunes (checked)
o iTunes Speaker Name: <enter desired speaker name>
    o iTunes Speaker Password: (optional)
    o Verify Password: (optional)
o Click Update to write the new settings to the AX
    In iTunes:
    iTunes > Preferences... > Advanced > General
o Look for remote speakers connected with AirTunes (checked)
