Wouldn't make a recovery disk

How do I make a recovery disk after my laptop won't turn on without one?
All this started after I downloaded an update from AVG.
I still have a warranty til March of 2014. I'm not very good at computers and need help.

Barb,
If you can get the computer to boot into Safe Mode, you might be able to use System Restore to take the computer "back in time" to a date before the computer had the problem.

Understand that your best bet, if they are available for your system, is to get and use the HP recovery set.  The discs from HP include all your original programs and HP setup that was included when the computer was new.
If you use the ISO method, you must then go to your Computer's webpage to download and install your drivers (use only those drivers and software for your system hardware).  Check your Control Panel > icon view > Device Manager to find a list of the drivers (like wireless driver).

  • I am trying to install Lion on my imac and it says it can't make a recovery disk

I am trying to install lion and receive a message saying it can't make a recovery disk.  I am using a 2.33 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo iMac.  I do have bootcamp on it, but was never able to install Windows.

What happens when Lion installs is it creates a Lion Recovery Partition at the very bottom area of the drive, this is used to Command R boot into and perform Disk Utility Repairs and reinstall Lion from Apple's servers much like a 10.6 disk will.
So when you ran the Lion installer, it couldn't create this small partiiton, either because the GUID partition table (the map of your paartitions on the drive) is borked or there is data all the way to the bottom of the drive or OS X thinks there is.
You set up the bootcamp parittion, so run that and delete the Bootcamp partition as your not using it or Windows, once it's finished reboot and try installing Lion again.
I should warn you, Lion will not run your Rosetta based software or hardware drivers for external hardware, you may have to purchase all new versions. Not only that, hardware drivers may not be available for 10.7 thus rendering your third party printers, scanners etc useless.
Before you install Lion, you should consult this web page
    http://roaringapps.com/apps:table
to see if your current programs will break and when to expect a new version (likely paid)
Also you shoudl check your hardware and the makers site if there is a 10.7 compatible driver/software for them.
And once you think your ready to go to Lion, get a blank external powered drive and a free/donationware copy of Carbon Copy Cloner to clone your present (non-Filevault) 10.6 boot drive to the external drive.
Later if 10.7 doesn't work for you, simply hold the option key and boot off the 10.6 clone, use Disk Utility to Erase the entire drive (the whole drive!) and reverse clone 10.6 back onto the internal drive.

Hi, if tryly a PowerMac, (PPC instead of Intel), you may need a Firewire Drive to be bootable, most PPC Macs cannot boot OSX from a USB drive.
So we know more about it...

  • K430 with OneKey 4.0 has no option to make a recovery disk

What are my options on this machine to make a recovery disk and backup in case of a hard drive failure? Also noticed OneKey 4.0 won't recognize external hard drives greater than 1TB. Why?

    Hi Ajssinc,
I understand your concern. Hence, the best way to backup is by backing up your personal data stored in the computer and then “Create a USB recovery drive” using a flash drive which contains only the OS (Operating System) backed up files.

You will only know about the hard drive when you try to access it in TDM from your other computer. If you cannot boot into TDM mode or if the drive does not appear on the new computer's Desktop then it is likely bad.
What you are thinking about as a recovery disk is the Recovery HD normally created when you install Lion or later on the computer. You boot from it as follows:
    Boot Using Command+R keys:
      1. Restart the computer.
      2. Immediately after the chime press and hold down the
"COMMAND" and the "R" keys together.
      3. Release the keys when the Utilities Menu appears.

  • Can you make a recovery disk with a mac?

I have two mac computers. One works that I currently use for personal use. But I recentlly bought a "fixer up iBook G4" that needs an install disk of 10.5 Leopard. I cannot find my disks that came with my Powerbook g4 but can I make a restore disk or recovery disk so I can restore the operating system that's on the iBook g4?
    Thanks in advance!

Connect the two computers using a FireWire cable. Use Target Disk Mode to clone the one drive to the other. Boot the iBook into TDM, then boot the PB normally. The iBook's drive should appear on the PB's Desktop. Use Disk Utility to erase the iBook's hard drive, then use Restore to clone the PB's drive to the iBook:
Clone using Restore Option of Disk Utility
      1. Open Disk Utility in the Utilities folder.
      2. Select the destination volume from the left side list.
      3. Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
      4. Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag it to the Destination
          entry field.
      5. Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to the Source entry field.
      6. Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
Destination means the external backup drive. Source means the internal startup drive.

  • Im installing and it tells me it make a recovery disk?  What does this mean?

I'm installing the new mountain lion and it say that it needs a recovery disk? I don't know exactly what it is asking? Please help!

Unlike OS X versions prior to Lion, Mountain Lion does not come with an install disk, and the installer will delete itself from your hard drive after you install ML, so you'll be left with no handy way to recover your drive in case of a problem (especially a problem during or right after install). Read the following MacWorld Articles to learn all about Recovery and creating a Recovery Disk:
    <http://www.macworld.com/search?q=install+from+recovery+partition>
I actually needed the one I made this time right after installing ML--my Disk required some repairs--and I was really glad I had it!

  • Unable to make Windows recovery disk - HP Envy 15 - Windows 8.1

While Windows is booting well, it seems I have to do a recovery.
On booting and pressing F11I get the message
Your PC needs to be repaired. A required device isn't connected or can't be accessed.
    Error code 0xc0000225
On the other side when I try in Windows "Create a recovery drive" I got a message on the second page telling me
"Some necessary files are missing ..." and that's it!
    How to proceed ???

You need to either ask a friend who has the very same Windows 8.1 version if you can make a usb Windows 8.1 recovery flash drive. You should be able to fix the error with it. You can purchase recovery media from HP.

    Spoiler (Highlight to read)

    Shubham_ringne,
I just tried a Windows "REFRESH" on my HP 13 Split x2 that came with Window 8 and was upgraded to 8.1 . After clicking REFRESH, Windows stated "Window 8.1 would have to be reinstalled after the Refresh". Additionally, Windows advised that some software, apps, and drivers would need to be reinstalled after the refresh. The Windows "REFRESH" returned the computer to Windows 8. Please see Refresh Your PC to Resolve Problems (Windows 8) to start the "REFRESH" process.
The HP Recovery partition should not have changed and should contain the original Windows 8 factory image. Once you have refreshed your computer and it is back to Windows 8, you be able to follow the instructions in Creating Recovery Discs or Saving a Recovery Image to a USB Flash Drive (Windows 8) to create you Windows 8 HP Recovery Media.

  • How do I make a windows 10 recovery disk

How do I make a back-up/recovery disk for Windows 10?  I made one when I bought this machine that had Windows 8.1 on it but I don't recall how I did it.  Help please.  Thanks in advance for the help.

    Hi there
Welcome to the HP Support Forums! It is a great place to find the help you need, both from other users, HP experts and other support personnel. I understand that you are looking for a method to make a recovery disk for your system after upgrading to Windows 10.  I am happy to help with this. The method you would have used to make recovery media for your original operating system would be to use the factory installed recovery manager.  As an FYI for the Windows 8 method -Performing an HP System Recovery (Windows 8)

For Windows 10, the intention of Microsoft is to dispense with recovery images, however there are still ways to make one. Here are a few pages I found that cover the options in the operating system, how to make a repair disk, and to make an image. Recovery options in Windows 10 - windows.microsoft.comHow to Create a USB Recovery Drive in Windows 10 - www.tenforums.comReset Recovery Image - Create in Windows 10 - www.tenforums.com I hope this helps.

  • Format Recovery Disks?

Just bought my first Toshiba computer - a Satellite A500-01W, Part # PSAR9C-01W002, and after selecting to install 64-bit Windows 7 OS, I was going to make up the recovery disks for the computer using Sony DVD-R 4.7 MB disks that I just purchased as well using the Toshiba Recovery Disk Creator software program when it occurred to me that I don't really know whether I must first format these disks in order to do this or whether the recovery disk software program does this? Additionally, if I must first format the disks, then in what format should this be, i.e. Fat32, NTSC? and what mode, i.e. Music, Video, Text? which I presume is done using the OS software and not the Toshiba software. Oh, and one other consideration - the Norton anti-virus 30-day trial program is on this computer and while not activated, I'm wondering if it might still be running something in the background that might interfere with recovery disk creation? Any info and comments appreciated.
    RVS (Randy)
PS: It's amazing how a simple consideration like this doesn't appear anywhere from the Toshiba help manual, this forum (at least the 200 or so posts I read before tiring) and the internet itself (looked for 2 hours or so)

It isn't about knowing Toshiba computers specifically or Windows 7.  It's about having some common sense and a modicom of general computer knowledge.  People who have never owned a computer before have been able to figure out how to make the recovery disks based solely on the content in the user's guide.  It isn't rocket scence and is explained extremely well in the useer's guide.  If they were to put every eventuality that could possibley happen in the user's guide it would be so large you wouldn't be able to put it on the hard drive and it would literally takes months to read it. It's been my experience that anyone who has to be walked through something like this in such detail quite often don't have enough general computer knowledge or general reasoning skills to be able to do things like this.  Autorun has been around since Windows 95 which was released 15 years ago.  It's inconscevable that anyone who uses computers on a regular basis wouldn't understand how it works and what to do when it pops up a windows dialog box.  Only someone who hasn't used a computer at all or has been using an old computer with Windows 3 or Dos wouldn't know about it.
As for taking it to a store to have them made, that wasn't what I stated.  I said take it to "someone who is more technically savvy to have it done for you".  It's fairly easy to find someone who will do it for your for little or nothing.  I know a lot of teenagers are quite capable of doing it for you.  Most people have a neighbor or relative that could easily do it.
If I offended you I appologize, but sometimes people need to accept their limitations instead of whining about being picked on or put down.
If you don't post your COMPLETE model number it's very difficult to assist you. Please try to post in complete sentences with punctuation, capitals, and correct spelling. Toshiba does NOT provide any direct support in these forums. All support is User to User in their spare time.

  • Windows Vista Home Premium Recovery Disks won't work

Have original disks for this Toshiba A215.  The hard drive failed so put in new hard drive. Got the missing boot manager message. so a tecn person used a cd and reformated the new hard drive. Still wouldn't run the recovery disks to install to factory defaults.  the Windows Vista sticker still on the computer with the activation code. So borrowed an install disk from a friend, but won't activate. Says it's not a valid activation code.  and still won't recognize my recovery disks. starts to run the recovery program then gives message - cannot enumerate.  What does it want to enumerate??

    cannot enumerate.
Try resetting the BIOS from AHCI mode to IDE or Compatibility or whatever you find there.
Most likely the trouble is caused by a hard disk with advanced-format technology. After restoring, there will be more to do.
Which Satellite A215? Always tell us that. There is a label on the bottom.

  • Problem with HP G62 Recovery Disks

    Hello,
I am having a problem with restoring the operating system on an HP G-62 Notebook. When I first purchased the notebook I was unable to make the recovery disks, so I recently ordered some new ones from HP. Because I has installed Ubuntu on the notebook, I wiped it from the hard drive used Wipedrive to delete the old Ubuntu operating system I had installed.
The notebook reads the first disk ok and installs part of windows, but when the screen comes on asking for disk number two it freezes up and never installs anything when you try to move anything on that screen it wont do anything and it wont install the second disk. It just keeps saying 'please wait'.
    Thanks, Robert
    This question was solved.
    View Solution.

    Hi, Robert:
I can't help you to get the recovery disks to work, but if you can read all 25 characters of the windows 7 product key on the bottom of your PC, you can make your own windows 7 installation disk to reinstall the operating system.
    Here's how:
If you can read the 25 character Microsoft windows 7 product key, you can download plain Windows 7 ISO files to burn to a DVD for the version of windows that came installed on your PC, and that is listed on the Microsoft COA sticker on your PC's case.
Burn the ISO using the Burn ISO option on your DVD burning program and burn at the slowest possible speed your program will allow. This will create a bootable DVD.
Or use the Windows 7 USB/DVD installation tool to compile the ISO file you download from Digital River. Link and instructions below. You need a 4 GB flash drive to use the USB method of compilation.
    http://www.microsoftstore.com/store/msstore/html/pbPage.Help_Win7_usbdvd_dwnTool
Use the 25 character product key on the PC to activate the installation.
The key will activate either a 32 or 64 bit installation.
Then go to the PC's support and driver page to install the drivers you need.
Link to the W7 ISO file downloads is below.

  • Install SSD from Recovery Disks (newerToshiba), or how?

    http://forums.toshiba.com/t5/System-Recovery-and-Recovery/Will-Toshiba-Recovery-Discs-properly-align...
^ See the last post of that thread.   The writer made recovery disks from the new laptop, then installed the SSD and used the recovery disks to install the operating system and software onto the new SSD.  (Didn't clone the hard drive, in other words.)
If you don't need to save settings and migrate files, is recovery-disks-to-SSD the best way to go?
I have a U505-S2012 Satelllite and a 256GB Crucial M4 SSD sitting here, ready to go,  LoL.  But I didn't know whether it was even possible to make the recovery disks install to a SSD.  Or make them install to a hard drive that's smaller than the original.
    Any thoughts or advice?
    Thanks!

As for me it's no matter how to install win7 on the new SSD drive - fresh install, clone hdd or use Factory Recovey media. For the x220 I've used the 2nd and 3rd methods.
As for twiking of win7 after a not clean installation just use sw from Intel for their SSD or twik it youself during 10-15 min. Alignment is not a problem if you use an SSD with TRIM support.
If you need UEFI the only clean installation is the method.
