Wow!  No servers connecting after 10.5.1 upgrade through software update

Just installed 10.5.1 update and cannot now connect to any smb/cifs or afp shares - after a delay after I select a server, or click the (connect as...) button, I get the spinning ball. Then the Finder restarts.
I cannot connect to any shared services.
I've been on 10.5 since day one and have had no networking problem (except AFP access to a third party AFP server through the GUI, CLI works ok though, don't understand this one yet either).
I have no problems with SMB or AFP though the CLI that I can tell, including no problem to the third party server:

You have Leopard installed on a TiBook 500Mhz? Why? If so, then that could very well be the problem. Just because you were able to hack the installer to get it to install on the machine doesn't mean it will run properly. Speed is not the only reason that machine (and others like it) are incompatible with Leopard.
Either way, whichever machine is the one that is crashing (the TiBook or the Mini), when the Finder restarted that means it crashed. There should be a crash log in Console.app for the Finder describing the crash. It might be able to give you some insight into what actually caused the crash. Good luck...

my iphone 4s will not charge or be recognized when plugged into the computer after the ios 5.1.1 software update why is this? i have used many usb cords also.

Had same problem and did the normal reset 10seconds but did not work.
I plugged in USB and held the on/off switch and home button for 20seconds and the "Connect to Itunes" came on the screen. I then opened up Itunes and it directed me to restore.

  • Lost my USB connections after 10.4.11 upgrade

Quite frustrating this. When I went through the 10.4.9 to .10 I lost the ability to access my external HD for some reason. Through these very useful discussions I got that back by using Pacifist and something else I can't remember - but pretty much by reinstalling the drivers from .9
I should have figured something would go wrong with the recent upgrade to .11, but it's worse this time. Now I can't access my printer or my scanner or my external HD. At first I thought my USB hub (Belkin 7-way) was playing up, but I don't think so now - it loads memory sticks across each port ok.
I've tried resetting with just the keyboard, mouse and printer plugged in, but no joy. Same with scanner. Still no luck with alternative leads.
On System Profiler I can see the printer and scanners connected, but however I try to get them to do anything, I get messages saying they're not connected.
    Any help much appreciated!

    Welcome to Discussions, habcrew!
If I understand correctly, you're booting your iMac in Tiger from the external (Seagate) HD using Firewire, not USB.
If that is correct, how was OS X Tiger installed onto the external HD? (If your issue involves Leopard, I'm not yet using it, therefore this entire post might not apply.)
It would have have been necessary to have cloned ("restored" via Disk Utility located on the original Install DVD, while booted from the Install DVD) (or cloned via SuperDuper, CCC, or some other) OS X from the iMac's internal HD onto the external HD. The external Seagate should have first been formatted by Disk Utility located either on the iMac or on the Install DVD. Use "Options" button on Disk Utility's "Erase" panel to zero the Seagate prior to format would be best.
Performing all subsequent Software Updates upon the cloned OS X will have to be done while the iMac is booted from the Seagate. Or optionally, the cloning of the entire iMac internal HD could be repeated at will at any time after updated, or could be incrementally updated from the internal by using other than Disk Utility (such as above mentioned SuperDuper or CCC).
HTH. Never having used Boot Camp, I'm sorry to say I don't know what to say about that part of the issue.

5.0.2 has not been released, thus you can not upgrade.

  • Why does my network connection time out when downloading iphone 4 software update?

Why does my network connection time out when trying to download iphone4 software update?

I'm having the same problem too. I cannot sync or update over wireless or wired connections ever since I installed the most recent iTunes update. iTunes goes through the complete OS 5.0.1 download only to tell me the connection has timed out just when it seems ready to install. I've since reinstalled iTunes, I've ejected and done hard restarts on both my problem devices. I've disabled anti-virus, anti-malware, and firewall. No change in outcome except that, after doing all this, my final attempt to simply sync my 1st Gen iPad led to iTunes crashing and being automatically closed by windows just before finishing the final step. Is this a cruel joke, because I'm certain I can hear iTunes laughing at me for wasting so much time on this.

My ipod touch has a permanent image of the end of a USB cable with an arrow pointing to an icon of ITunes. I can't reset using the two button method, and ipod does not appear on itunes when I plug it into the computer - and nothing else happens either.  This happened after I agreed to a software update which failed.  How can I get it going again?

    Try:
    - iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
    - Also try DFU mode after try recovery mode

    - If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
    - If still not successful that usually indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

  • Can't connect to the App store, iTunes and software update with MBP 13

    Hi,
I have a MBP 13 from 2011 and I have a really annoying problem with connecting it to the App Store, iTunes and the software update. It claims that I have no internet/wifi/network, although I clearly have it since I am watching series through Netflix and are on Facebook at the same time. So naturally I started to look in to the firewall and it works fine, since it does not and has never blocked any other Apple products/programs. So I continued looking everywhere in the computer, found nothing. And finally I decided to re-install the MBP and I still cannot connect to neither of these programs.
I feel that it is really unnecessary to hand the MBP in for service for a problem like this, so I was wondering if there is someone out there who has a solution to this problem? Beacue , as I mentioned earlier, my internet/wifi is working perfectly with everything else, so I really do not understand why App Store, iTunes and the software update does not work.

    Hello there, Victoria Nisoho.
The following Knowledge Base article should be of use for your issue:

  • Do I need to repair after enabling journaling on MBP with software update?

My new 17" 2.4GHz MacBook Pro for some reason came without journaling turned on. Now the new MacBook Pro Software Update 1.0 wants to enable journaling, but the instructions says I need to do a disk repair afterwards booting from the OS X DVD. Unfortunately I don't have the DVD with me as I'm on a long trip.
Do I really need to do the repair afterwards? Could I just as well enable journaling from Disk Utility without running the software update? Or should I wait until I get back? I've had some stability issues with the MBP and therefore want to enable journaling to see if that makes things more stable.

Actually... I don't believe you "have" to run disk repair afterwards. The info posted by Apple states "Note: After MacBook, MacBook Pro Software Update 1.0 has been installed, the Macintosh startup volume will have journaling enabled.":
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=306442
I believe the idea behind running the disk repair is just precautionary. I have updated a MacBook and three MacBook Pros and ran the disk repair utility from the install disks. The utility did not find any issues with any of the four machines I ran the update on. If you don't have access to your install DVD now... just run it when you get back home. To be honest... I expect the VAST majority of users out there will just install the update and never go through the step of going through a disk repair from the install DVD.

  • I just upgraded to Snow Leopard. Why do I get "you are not connected to the internet" when I hit software updates?

I am trying to upgrade the OS from 10.6.3 and, following Apple's instructions, I hit Software Update and get the message "Software Update can't check for updates because of a network problem. Software Update can’t connect to the update server. Make sure you’re connected to the Internet, and then try again." I am connected, so what is the problem?

For a starting place restart your router and modem with the mac asleep.

I never heard this until after the 1.1 software "update" with the new iTunes and the MacWorld conference... Anybody have the link to the ipod feedback page? The only one I can find doesn't even have the 1.1 software listed as an option to leave feedback about (it only has 1.0.3 from before the 1.1 update as the most current software listed).

It seems the only two solutions are to live with the white noise and wait for the next firmware update, or do downgrade to the previous version of the firmware (if you still have the files on your computer). Check this post for instructions on downgrading iPod firmware using a Mac.

  • Ethernet Won't Connect after 10.5.6 Upgrade

After doing the upgrade to 10.5.6 on my MacBook Pro, the ethernet port no longer seems to work. The Network preferences panel claims that the cable for Ethernet is not plugged in when it certainly is and works just fine with other computers (Mac and PC). I know Airport works since that's how I'm connecting to write this.
Anyone else seen this problem? Anyone have a solution?

Have you tried rebooting your router?
There are two major parts to connecting to the Internet using Wi-Fi and DHCP:
    1) Associating with the network
This is where you connect to your local network, typically by selecting your router's SSID and entering its password. This is the Wi-Fi equivalent of connecting your machine to a router using an Ethernet cable.
    2) Obtaining an IP address (and other network parameters) via DHCP
This is where your machine asks your local DHCP server for an IP address and if one is available, your DHCP server should provide it (and other network parameters, such as the local netmask, the gateway address for your network, the addresses of your network's DNS servers, etc.)
When this step fails, computers fall back to what is called a self-assigned IP address. This address, 169.x.x.x, is an IP address systems use when an attempt to obtain an IP address via DHCP fails.
This is done so that two machines connected to each other without a DHCP server in place will still be able to communicate in an ad-hoc fashion, but they will not be able to connect to other networks (such as the Internet.)
The question of why DHCP fails is a rather complex one with a variety of possible causes - router issues, DHCP server issues, and so forth. For example, some cable modems are configured to only issue a single IP address - any device other than the first to ask will not be able to obtain one. Still more common is they can only assign a limited number of addresses - say five - a number quite easy to reach if say you have a DVR, a couple iPhones, a computer and a Wii or XBox in the house.
So the first things to do to try and resolve the issue are the easy ones, and rebooting your router is tops on that list.

  • Loss of wifi connect after 3.1.2 upgrade

I recently updated the software on my iphone, and now I am no longer able to connect to (or find) any wifi point.
I tried a restore of the iphone software, but I am still unable to connect via wifi at all. I am able to find the network on my mbp, and have even tried other reliable wifi locations, but not a single network shows up listed.
    help?

    Quick update:
after a few attempts to restore, erasing all data, and going through DFU mode, the wifi issue still was not fixed.
I did determine, however, that the problem did not occur until AFTER I downloaded the new AT&T carrier update--that took my wifi from 100% working to not being able to pick up my network.
I called tech support, and I have already sent the phone in for repair.
    Let's see what happens now.

  • SQL Developer Not Connecting After Mac Snow Leopard 10.6.3 Update

I installed Oracle 10g on a MacBook Pro running Snow Leopard 10.6.2 as described in here . All worked fine until after updating Snow Leopard last night with to 10.6.3. First I started getting an Insecure Startup Item Disabled message which I solved with the reply to my message at the Apple forums here . That took care of the first issue but now when attempting to connect with SQL Developer, I receive several errors messages in the log most of which point to the source o.jdevimpl.db.adapter.DefaultContextWrapper with a message starting with "Failed to create naming Context for db connections at url: file:/Users... I assume this is some sort of Jave error perhaps related to the Snow Leopard upgrade. However, I have absolutely no clue how to deal with it. I'm a student taking my first database class so the install of Oracle pushed me to my system knowledge limits.
    Any help would be appreciated!!

  • Smb shares on servers inaccessible after OS X 10.8.2 (12C3104) update today?

I finally switched over from a W7 machine to a beautiful MBP Retina this afternoon. I was surprised at the ease of set up etc. It all worked flawlessly, and I could see and access all my network shares (some other W7 PC's, but most importantly my Synology NAS box with all our music and movies on it). My itunes saw the NAS box as shared, let me log on to it and could immediately play from it. GREAT.
Then I got an update later this evening to OS X 10.8.2 (12C3104). And now this no onger works... Finder and iTunes show the shared resources such as some PCs and the SAN box, but will no longer connect to them :-(. I have browsed many forums including this one, I read many others have issues, but have not been able to find a solution.
I am all new to Mac, and after a fabulous start this afternoon I am now rather down about my choice... Can anyone point me in the right direction?

    BTW,
I usually roll my own. Six or eight Phillips screws and your finished. These are the three I currently have. The last is four years old:
