Wpa-psk troubles

Hello everyone, i'm having troubles connecting to a netgear wpa-psk network. I know that the network name and password are correct but which ever network type i choose wpa/wpa2 personal or enterprise it does not work. i am running 10.5.3 and the router is just the other side of the room. Suggestions would be great. Thankyou

I've seen similar problems using Airport to connect with my Netgear WNR3500 router. Basically, the only encryption option that works is WEP, which is no good for my printer! I've tried WPA Personal & WPA2 Personal and neither works even though my printer is connecting just fine with WPA2.
I suspect Airport has issues with WPA/WPA2 and there appear to be no new fixes released for OS 10.4.11 on the Powerbook G4. The only way to get WPA/WPA2 to work with this Powerbook is to get another wireless NIC.
Any suggestions would be welcome.
Thanks

    That wpa_supplicant.conf looks dandy .

    As you can see the first one is WPA2, the second one WPA. Of course you can mix but that will imho only increase possible incompatibilities.
    My netcfg setup:
    CONNECTION="wireless"
    INTERFACE="intel"
    HOSTNAME="hermes"
    # AP authentication
    SCAN="yes"
    SECURITY="wpa-config"
    WPA_CONF="/etc/wpa_supplicant.conf"
    WPA_OPTS="-Dwext -B"
    ESSID=*snip*
    # IP address
    IP="dhcp"
    DHCP_TIMEOUT=10
    N does not add any additional security (except that it makes WPA2 mandatory as far as I understood, I might be wrong about this). My router runs OpenWRT and I only intend to switch to N when I find a router that is stable on OpenWRT, and provides N performance and range (now you often have to resort to G MIMO drivers and stuff with OpenWRT on N models).
    hey!, thanks for your config there, now I have wifi using wpa2 connecting properly on a dell xps m1330.
    But I also found that if I didn't use netcfg to stop the profile manually, I couldn't reboot the system and after typing 'reboot' I think the wpa_supplicant is just killed or crashes and the system is stuck on '> Rebooting'. I had to use 'netcfg2 -d abc' to stop the profile then reboot.

  • How to connect to a wpa psk adhoc network

    having trouble connecting to my laptops wpa psk adhoc network any suggestions?

    What happens when you try?  Do you get any messages?  IS an IP address assigned to the iPod?  Did it ever work?  Does the iPod connect to other networks?

  • WPA-PSK problems

    We have a guest WLAN set up using WPA2-PSK where we give out the generic network key to all users. The thing is, some users can connect, others cannot.
    Debugs on the APs show "Authentication Failed." That's it. I know it's not a mistyped key.
    I know the APs work, because all of our corporate devices authenticate fine. It;s just the guests on the PSK guest WLAN that have trouble. I guess what I'm asking is: Is there anything I can do to increase compatibility on the WAP? WPA1/TKIP are allowed. I did change the Ethernet Encapsulation Transform on the radio to 802.1H from RFC 1042. Would this even matter?

    Hii For WPA-PSK to work , you need to make sure.
    1. You are selecting correct key type (hex/ascii)
    2. You are using same key
    3. Check for the corrupt driver versions
    4. Are you using same client utility on end devices like cisco ADU ?
    5. Capture the auth sequence using airopeek and see the authentication failure reason code
    6. Debug the client and see the problem using command "debug client"

    I have a 3rd generation iPod Touch and just did the update to IOS 5. Now I can't connect to my Netgear wifi router. My iPhone connects fine along with all of my other laptops etc. I have the router set with WPA-PSK [TKIP] security and an access list. I've confirmed the mac address is included on that list and that the password is correct. Under choses netwrok I select the network and it just goes into a spin. I have tried removing the password and the access list settings and it still will not complete the connection to the router thus no internet access. The routers firmware is also up to date. This thing worked fine before this update and I've already tried to restore from backup. Any ideas or is the wifi nic bad in this thing with the new apple firmware update? Any fix?

    Thanks Bob, I don't know why but it all of a sudden worked a few days later. It's a mystery but at least problem solved.

  • Can't Connect To WPA-PSK/AES

    I've read through dozens of posts here and on other sites, but still can't figure this out.
    At home, I have a D-Link DI-634M wireless router. We have two laptops (Toshiba and IBM) that connect to it just fine, but I can't get my new iPhone 3G to connect. The Wireless Settings page on the router looks like this:
    SSID: SomethingLikeThis
    Channel: Auto Channel Select enabled
    Super G Mode: Disabled
    Transmission Rate: Auto
    802.11g Only Mode: Disabled
    SSID Broadcast: Disabled
    Security Mode: WPA-PSK
    WPA Mode: WPA
    Cipher Type: AES
    Passphrase: Looks something like this sentence, for a total of 63 characters.
    When I try to add the network to my iPhone, I get the error that it can't connect. But, in the network settings, it will now show the SSID, with the encryption icon and the signal strength meter. I select it, get prompted for the password again, but still can't connect.
    Just checked the logs on the router, and I can see an INFO message that says "Wireless system with MAC address nnnnnnnnnnnnn associated", showing the MAC address of my iPhone. I don't see anything after that to indicate any error with that device.
    I upgraded the firmware in the router to the latest release (Feb/2008). I've tried changing the Cipher Type from AES to TKIP, and even "TKIP and AES".
    What am I missing here?
    Thanks!

    Sorry, forgot to mention that when I turn off encryption it works fine. But, even though I don't broadcast my SSID, I'd never run a wireless router without at least some basic encryption. Just tried changing the password to not have spaces, and now it works fine. That's strange, since I didn't have any problems with any other wireless devices connecting when the password did have spaces.
    Thanks a million!!!!

  • 5800 XM WPA-PSK and network profiles problem

    Hi,
    I've just purchased a 5800XM phone, with the idea of setting up my personal email account on the device, using my office's network access point.
    The access point / router is a Comtrend 5361. The SSID is set to hidden (no broadcast), and the security is set to WPA-PSK (pre-shared key).
    On the Nokia phone I go to 'Settings -> Connectivity -> Wireless LAN' and choose 'Other (hidden netw.)'.
    Then I choose 'Connect', set the WLAN network name, the phone shows a message 'No WLAN network found', but then prompts to choose network mode (Infrastructure - Hidden),  and then password. It connects succesfully and asks for storing the network profile under offline mode, I tell it to do so, and the new profile appears under 'Network destinations -> Internet'. So until now everything seems ok.
    The problem is that after the phone disconnects from the internet, the stored profile seems to be useless, since the phone never connects automatically even if the AP is available and always shows 'Search for WLAN'. In the list the hidden access point never shows up so the only choice is repeating the steps that I mentioned above, creating a new profile every time I want to surt the net.
    Is there a solution to this, or a third party software that can do the trick?, I have OS V21.0.25, custom version 21.0.025.219.06 from Vodafone, no updates available as of today, but I've tested it with a phone that has the latest OS v30 and it shows the same behavior.
    I can't change the access point settings, so I must stick to WPA and hidden SSID, so for me this is almost a deal breaker.

    Ok, I was testing the wifi part without a sim card inserted, with a sim, the phone connects to the profile properly, but without the sim it has an odd behavior, not loading the profile and wrongly stating that it can't connect when it does (but disconnects randomly).
    So the problem is that wireless lan management doesn't work properly without a sim card.

  • Leopard problem connecting with wifi AP using WPA PSK instead of WEP

    I cannot connect via Airport to Speedtouch 580i accesspoint using WPA PSK.
    WEP works just fine, but using WPA PSK I keep getting the message invalid password and then cannot connect wirelessly.
    Tiger as of version 10.4.3 through .11 worked flawlessly via WPA PSK with the same AP.
    I installed 10.5.4 Leopard from scratch and used combo 10.5.5 and and a few days ago combo update 10.5.6 but problem remain.
    After the clean install I used migration assistent to get user data and logins from Tiger into Leopard, having used an image made with SuperDuper.
    I have read many support forums and suggestions, it all didn't result in a working internet connection at all with WPA PSK :-...(
    What I did until now:
    - Disabled IPv6 for the airport interface
    - Changed to a simple WPA PSK password without CAPITALS instead of something like #A!$($D$%\T@q{|
    - Changed to a fixed channel in the wireless accesspoint instead of auto. http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1195706
    - Rebooted Accesspoint various times.
    - Changed to 802.11g only instead of b+g
    - Tried both TKIP and AES as encryption type
    - Disabled and re-enabled Firewall in Leopard
    - Changed to fixed ip adress instead of via DHCP for network addres assignment
    - Tried connecting with and without broadcast of SSID to AP.
    - Repaired keychain , http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=5858982
    - Did various keychain changes incl deleting old values
    - Deleted some items from library, as per suggestions from forums.
    In the end I have a suspicion that it all drills down to something simple, quotes (" ") are used to present the password in the password field, at least this is the case with WEP, but this does not harm the functionality for WEP as this is working alright.
    With the current WPA PSK implementation it perhaps does influence, because it keeps saying invalid password. I have tested both with and without quotes and things did not improve at all.
    I'm running out of ideas to solve this matter, therefore I have sent a report to Apple via their Feedback webpage.
    While having using 10.5.5 fo a while I had big hopes 10.5.6 would cure the problem , unfortunately this is not the case.
    Please provide more suggestions to solve this problem.

    Checked Accesspoint firmware upgrade. The only difference between the current 4.2.7.25 and the latest version, 4.2.7.30 is the support of WDS i.e. expanding the wireless network by connecting 2 APs together (via WEP).
    Still tried upgrading via the MAC OS X update software, it did not fire up, I think the software is not fond of Leopards
    As WEP works ok with Leopard on my G4 Powerbook 12inch, I didn't want to focus further on the speedtouch because of the motto 'if it ain't broke don't fix it.'
    Am going to research more on Keychain and DHCP, others are reporting issues with it along with this 'airport crisis' http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=375838

  • WPA-PSK configuration [RESOLVED]

    I'm doing something really stupid but as I don't know much about linux - let along wireless linux - I just know I'm doing something INSANELY stupid.
    I finally got my wireless working thanks to chrismortimore and tardo   But it's working with its front door wide open. I want to secure it with WPA-PSK.
    I've got a Netgear DG834GT ADSL Modem Router.  I'm manually configuring it and it gives me the following four security options:
    1. Disable
    2. WEP (Wired Equivalent Privacy)
    3. WPA-PSK (Wi-Fi Protected Access Pre-Shared Key)
    4.  WPA-802.1x
    I've been using it on 1. for a couple of days now without any problems.  However, I switched it to 3. (WPA-PSK) and it asked me for a 8-63 digit Network Key.  I set it with 4rchL1nuxR0ck5.
    I then altered my /etc/conf.d/wireless from:
    wlan_eth2="eth2 essid ShagNet"
    which I know works to:
    wlan_eth2="eth2 essid ShagNet key s:4chL1nuxR0ck5"
    I rebooted but it didn't work.  I couldn't get any web pages to load in Konqueror.
    Can someone please tell me what I'm doing wrong?

    for wpa you need the wpa_supplicant. install it and then edit and USE your network-profile (/etc/network-profiles/...) like this:
    # Wireless Settings (optional)
    ESSID=ShagNet
    #KEY=
    IWOPTS="mode managed essid $ESSID channel ?"
    USEWPA="yes" # start wpa_supplicant with the profile
    AUTOWPA="yes" # automatically configure WPA
    PASSKEY="4rchL1nuxR0ck5" # wpa passkey/phrase. for use with AUTOWPA
    for this your rc.conf must look like this:
    INTERFACES=(lo !eth0 !foo)
    NET_PROFILES=(menu)
    hope that this will help you...

  • Wifi (WPA-PSK) not restored after sleep?  (10.4.10)

    Hi,
    Has anyone else noticed that their Wifi connection is not being restored after the MacBook comes back from a sleep?
    I'm using a 2006 white MacBook (Core Duo) with 10.4.10, connecting to a Cisco 877W ADSL router using WPA-PSK. Cisco firmware version is (C870-ADVSECURITYK9-M), Version 12.4(4)T7, RELEASE SOFTWARE (fc1), "flash:c870-advsecurityk9-mz.124-4.T7.bin" which seems to be current.
    From a cold boot, there is no problem connecting to the wireless router, but after a sleep, the connection is not restored, and the router syslog shows repeated unsuccessful authentication attempts from the Macbook's MAC address.
    Connecting manually to the correct network SSID doesn't resolve the problem: it just prompts for the WPA PSK keyphrase, which doesn't work if entered. Of course the correct keyphrase is already in the keychain.
    As a workaround, switching the Macbook's Airport off and on again a few times eventually seems to get it working again, but it's slow and very clunky.
    Can anyone else confirm this problem? It seems to have been introduced with 10.4.10, but I would like independent confirmation before reporting this to Apple, as I changed the wireless router around the same time as the 10.4.10 update appeared.
    Thanks,
    - Martin.
    PS: I guess there are two morals to this story...
    1) Always clone your hard drive to a Lacie drive with SuperDuper before installing any Apple updates - so that you can back out any buggy updates without a full reinstall.
    2) Don't install any Apple updates within 2 weeks of installing other network changes - so that you can tell what's caused any issues.

    The WPA auth problem still exists on a clean install of Leopard (and a full reboot is needed to clear it every time the laptop comes out of sleep) so I'll ring Apple Support and see if they can at least add it to their known issues list, in the hope of resolution later. It's quite likely that downgrading to WEP would be a workaround, but WEP is just not acceptable from a security perspective.

  • IPhone can't join network (WPA-PSK)

    I have a D-Link DI-524 router and it had always been set to WEP until I bought my Macbook Pro recently. Everything worked fine with WEP - my iphone, playstation 3, old laptop. But my macbook couldn't work with WEP, so I changed my router security setting to "WPA-PSK/WPA-PSK2"(shown as an option on the router setup page). Now my macbook and playstation 3 both work with the new setting, but not the iphone....it can detect the network but when I type in the correct password it says can't join the network. I've tried resetting the iphone network, rebooting it, still not working.
    I never got to the bottom of why my macbook can't work with WEP, but as long as it works with WPA that's fine so that I can at least use the web. I'm alright with having to use 3G on my iphone too, but it'll be very inconvenient if I have to download certain apps that require a wifi connection.

    Try the steps in the article below:
    iOS: Troubleshooting Wi-Fi networks and connections
    Another easy way to isolate the cause of the issue is by trying to connect those devices to another wifi network.

    When I try connect to my router with WPA-PSK (TKIP) I have error:
    Wireless authentication failed because of a timeout.
    My notebook and router configurated correctly!! I installed new intel drivers for 3945ABG chip.
    WPA2-PSK and WEP work fine.

    Hi
    The same happened on my old notebook.
    I was not able to establish the WLan connection for longer than 1min with WPA encryption.
    I have downloaded the newest Atheros driver and updated everything.
    Everything works fine with WEP but not WPA.
    Then I have disabled the Windows own configuration option and use the Atheros client utility. Now everything works fine!
    I would recommend using the Intel Proset utility and check all possible settings!

    Mark,
    I have setup wireless in two other compainies related to Rail... The biggest issue will be who will support the guest users and will they take the responsibility. Their security team didn't want that and were fine with tunneling the users to either a dmz or seperate Internet connection. Will dhco release the address... Not right away. You can play around with the lease tim and see if your laptop keeps getting the same address or one higher. If the isue is with dhco being used up from association, then don't broadcast the ssid and have the receptionist hand out the ssid with username and password. My clients use a default username and passowrd but changes that every week. They seem to prefer that over changing it every day or have a username passeor for every guest user. They use wcs to print out the guest credentials. Again, the network team has the recepionist doing this, so they made sure that they are not making too much extra work for them or else they would have to be responsible for guest users.
    Hope this helps.

  • E4200v2 - Cannot connect IP Camera w/ WPA-PSK

    I recently puchased a new E4200v2 router and one of the devices that I have on my network is a Level1 WCS-2040 wireless network camera.  My old router was a Netgear WPN-824.  I was able to (and I'm still able to) connect the camera to the Netgear router with WPA-PSK but not to the new E4200v2.  The only way for me to connect it to the new router is with WEP, which I obviously do not want.
    I'm at a loss for what the problem is because the setup is easily done.  I'm thinking it's an issue with the E4200v2 but I'm not sure what... hoping that the issue could be resolved in the next revision of the firmware.  I've tried WPA2/WPA Mixed Mode, WPA Personal (which I understand is the same thing as WPA-PSK) and WEP.  The camera supports WEP and WPA-PSK.  When I have the camera configured with WPA-PSK it simply isn't connecting to the E4200v2, only the old netgear.
    See screenshots below:
    Netgear router wireless config:
    Netgear router connected devices (shows laptop and wirelss camera):
    IP Camera config while connected to old router:
    IP Camera working on old network:
    E4200v2 wireless status:
    IP Camera config while connected to E4200v2 router (via wired connection, not wireless):
    When the wired connection is removed from the camera and powercycled, the E4200v2 does not list the camera as a connected device.  I've power cycled everything, multiple times and tried everything I know of.  What could be the problem?  Note that the MAC address for the camera is the same for both wired and wireless adapters.  Not sure what to do, any help would be appreciated.  And no, Password1 is not my default password... just what I was testing with for the purpose of screenshots.
    Regards,
    Henrik Gustavsson

    The camera does not support WPA2, only WPA-PSK (TKIP) and WEP.  That being the case, I've tried it with the router in WPA2/WPA Mixed Mode and WPA Personal.  No dice...    Still only works with WEP.  Works with WPA-PSK on the old router just fine, just not the E4200v2.

  • Slower connection with WPA-PSK

    Hi, I'm new to Apple and the whole Apple discussion board.
    I recently converted to Mac and have one of the new 20" Intel iMacs. I looked through the available discussions but none of them quite addressed my issue:
    I recently received a new 2Wire router from ATT-Yahoo DSL. I have it connected by ethernet cable directly to my old PC, and my Mac connects wirelessly via Airport.
    For security reasons, I tried to switch my encryption from WEP (which was the default) to WPA (WPA-PSK is what actually showed up as the option on the 2wire site), and when I did, the wireless connection was dramatically slower. So slow that I couldn't stream music from sites like rhapsody. When I switched back to the WEP default code, the problem seemed to correct itself.
    1) Is there something I needed to adjust as well, either on the Mac or on the 2wire site, when I changed the encryption to WPA, to avoid the slow-down?
    2) How great is the security advantage of WPA over WEP? I've configured the settings so that my wireless network doesn't appear automatically on other people's computers.
    I'm new to the wireless game as well. Thanks for anybody's help to the above.
