WPA Security

My iMac will not connect to a wireless network with WPA security enabled - message 'Network requires a WPA password appears' but it will not accept the password . If I take off the WPA security, then it connects. I have tried this at two separate locations using two different routers (one Netgear, one Huweai). My old mac mini connects with no problem with security on as do two Windows laptops.
I have tried WPA personal and WPA2 personal but nothing works - still will not accept the password
I used the Apple transfer facility to transfer the data from my old mac mini to the iMac
Apple support little help - just suggested that check my internet connection
Mac OSX ver 10.6.7

When using WPA2-PSK have you tried selecting the AES option.
I've got a Netgear router and have that option selected rather than the TKIP choice.
I wonder whether it would be worth experimenting on changing the channel on the router. I've seen on here that it's helped some people with flaky wifi performance.
On the Netgear it might be an idea to back-up the settings before fiddling so that you can restore them if needs be.

  • WPA security Types are missing after upgrading to Windows 8.1

After upgrading from Windows 8 Pro 64bit to Windows 8.1 Pro 64bit on my Sony Vaio Duoe 13, I could not find WPA security type while configuring Wireless network manually. (only WPA2 and 802.1X are available).
I have done a lot of troubleshootings like
    1-Reinstall Wirless original driver
2-Updating the wireless driver to the latest
3-Uninstall and reinstall windows 8 then upgrading again to windows 8.1
    But the same.
Is there any way to add WPA to the security type?

    Yes! It works!
To recap : My laptop has an Atheros AR9002WB-1NG adapter, windows 8.1. Even when it had windows 8, it was unable to connect, but unlike now, I didn't look closely enough about the type of network. Originally I thought it was
this problem. But they confirmed that others with windows 8 had no issues with this. Then , when I tried configuring the network manually, I could not find the WPA-enterprise option at all, only the
    WPA2-enterprise.
So here I was, and Greg Seth's answer gave me an idea.
In the following instructions, some commands are obvious, so I won't explain unless necessary. So here's what you do :
    0) Go to command line, preferably Administrator (not tried without).
    1) C:\Windows\System32> cd \Users\<User>\Documents
    2) C:\Users\<User>\Documents> netsh
    3) netsh> wlan
    4) netsh wlan> show profiles
    5) delete profile name=<yournetwork>
Enclose the name of network within quotes, this is to ensure that you can cleanly set up the right profile. Don't close the netsh, we'll need it some more. If you do, just reach there the same way as before.
    6) Right click the connection icon in lower right corner > open Network and Sharing Center > Set up a new connection or network > Manually connect to a wireless network
    7) Try to create a profile, and try to get as many details to correspond with your requirement. The rest we'll edit in command line, so let's make it as easy as possible.
    8) Do the same at the next screen. Edit Network settings > change all the parameters that you can, to match the requirement. My university tech support has a detailed document listing the options to choose, usually for windows 7, or even windows 8. get
as many of them as possible.
    9) Finish. Move back to your netsh terminal
    10) netsh wlan> show profile <profilename>
without quotes this time. This should show your previous attempt at creating a profile in the GUI dialog boxes. In my case, it had WPA2 and AES. It has to become WPA and TKIP. I also set my authMode to userOnly, since I hadn't done it right in the dialog box
    before.
    11) netsh wlan> set profileparameter
displays a humongous list of parameters with detailed options, just carefully examine the syntax. It's all here.
    12) netsh wlan> set profileparameter name=<profilename> authentication=wpa encryption=tkip authMode=userOnly
    13) netsh wlan> set profileparameter
    Don't exit this yet.
    14) Now click the connection icon, and connect to the network. It will ask you the username and password in a different style, that was my clue something was different this time.
    15) It should connect. In my case atleast, it did. Verify by browsing.
    16) netsh wlan> export profile name=<profile name>
In order that you're not put through this ordeal again, export the profile safely to a file. Again, the profile name in quotes.
    17) Wonder why microsoft makes things difficult for us!

  • I need to locate my WPA security passphrase

I 'lost' the connection between my HP printer (J6480) and in trying to reestablish it I get this message: 'Your wireless router requires a WPA security passphrase. The passphrase configured on your HP printer does not match exactly. Run the wireless network setup to re-enter your wireless network WPA secuity passphrase,'
I have no record of the passphrase. Can anyone help me locate it?

    Thanks Bob
My problem is I don't recall using a password when setting up the printer (now several years ago). I know the password for the Time machine but that doesn't work so it is something else and I can't figure out what. I have taken some guesses, also to no avail. Is there a way to ferret out the password?

  • WPA Security, Crashing OS, Locked out of Web-Based Setup Page. AAAaaarrrrrrgggg!

I tried several times to enable WPA security on my WMP54GS router by using the "Secure Easy Setup" button in the Wireless Network Monitor Panel. I pressed the lighted Cisco logo on the router as directed, I clicked on the "next" button on screen, and Windows crashed. (That is, my system rebooted and Windows reported that it had recovered from a serious error.)  I am running XP. I also tried to enable security using the router’s web-based setup page.  I followed the instructions, and a new web screen appeared stating "error on page."  I tried again to enable security using the web-based setup page, but now it won't let me in using the default password (admin).  I tried resetting the router by pressing the reset button for 30 seconds, but I still cannot access the web-based setup page. Sooooooo, I'm out of ideas.  Can anyone help?
    Thanks.

    Hi
When configuring your wireless settings, use a wired computer and not a wireless computer. Because it will not be able to apply the new settings. Its like trying to troubleshoot a automobile malfunction while you are driving the car itself.

  • Orignal Airport card with WPA security

I have two machines as follows:
iMac G5, OS 10.4.6 with Airport Extreme
iMac G4, OS 10.3.9 with original Airport card.
Airport Express connected to cable modem (firmware v6.2)
    WEP 128 security.
When I originally set up my wireless network, the G4 would not connect with other than WEP security. There was nothing in the documentation that indicated that this would be a problem. Even the Apple Care guy was not aware of it. I don't remember how long ago this was.
Everything works great, but I'd like WPA security. Rather than "break" something that's working, I thought I ask this forum for some wisdom.
Has something been updated, either on the Mac side or the Express side to eliminate this "problem"?
    Thanks for the help,
    Bob

As long as you are using AirPort software version 3.3 or better you shouldn't have a problem connecting to a WPA network. See AirPort Card: When You Can Join a WPA Network.

  • Connecting to 802.11a AP using WPA security - no go

I have an AP that is set to 802.11a (5GHz) using WPA security and is set to hide its SSID. My iMac is connecting to this AP without any problems whatever frequency i set on AP, hide/show SSID. The problem is - Macbook does not show this AP in AP list when requested, if i select other and enter correct settings (ssid and WPA passkey) it says - connection timed out, AP does not show any signs that something even tried to connect to AP.
the only resort is to use 802.11g when i can connect to AP without any problems.
in Network utilities it shoes that it supports 802.11a/b/g/n
    hope i gave enough details.
later today i will try to set WPA2 instead of WPA, also will try to set no security settings at all.
any thoughts how to force it to connect to 5GHz AP?
    edit:
forgot to say why i want to switch to 5GHz - the problem is - lately many 2.4GHz b/g APs popped up in neighborhood and started to cause latency/interference as some manage to follow me over frequencies i set up.

ok, setting to WPA2 solved the issue, because still, with WPA configuration i was not able to connect. allowing TKIP and WPA2 allowed macbook to connect. Also iMac changed the settings to WPA2 and it didn't matter that it had correct settings fot WPA.
    weird.
maybe someone could point out how to set these things explicitly, so i can choose what settings are in use.

  • WPA Security w/ Non-Apple Wireless Base?

I'm upgrading from an original Airport BS and was curious to see if anyone has purchased a wireless "N" station from another compatible brand such as Netgear?
My question is about security. If I purchase a non-Apple router, how do I set up WAP security?
    Thank you!
    Rick...

Setting up WPA security (or WEP for that matter) on a non-AirPort device, is pretty much the same. Most non-AirPort routers, like Belkin, D-Link, or Linksys, use a web-based administration format. Most also include a CD with automated setup for Windows-based devices.
I suggest that you download a copy of the user's manual for the particular router you are interested in and take a look at how wireless security is established before you make a purchase.

  • WPA security on 10.3?

I heard you can set up and use WPA security on 10.3; I have it running on my iMac with 10.4 but the menu choices are not there on 10.3 (on myiBook). The help viewer leads to a page that says Mac has it but that's it for help
Any ideas on how to use it? It asks for a password but that case only covers WEP.

I think you mean AirPort Extreme and the answer is no. Macs with the original AirPort card can use WPA.
But you need a Mac with an AirPort Extreme card to use WPA2.

  • WPA Security with the F5D7230-4

    Hey,
I've successfully bridged my Airport Express from my Belkin F5D7230-4 with WEP Security enabled and it worked very well. Well, I should actually rephrase that; it worked well for all the Macs. The only PC on the wireless network couldn't establish a consistent connection, so I had to change the security to WPA and now everybody's computers work very well (WPA is actually desired). The only problem with WPA is that I can't get WDS to work with it, in other words, the Airport Express won't connect to the Belkin. After configuring the settings the same way as before (except changing the security) the Airport Express will first stay solid yellow, turn green for 2 or 3 seconds, and then flash yellow again. I have tried changing the wireless channel, and telling the Airport Express to just join (not WDS) while the Airport Express next to the Belkin, but still nothing worked.
Wireless bridging is infact enabled on the Belkin, and I've also tried allowing only certain access points to connect, but that didn't work either.
Is it possible that I'm not able to use WPA security with WDS on this Belkin router?
It's a F5D7230-4 Belkin Router with 4.05.03 firmware, and the latest firmware is on the Airport Express.
Thanks for any help in advance.

Do you mean to get into the network? I do have a password WPA password set, and that's why the Airport Express can't access it.
I need WPA set because a: the PC on the network needs it in order to connect, and b: it's much more secure.
I pretty much need to have the security because the Belkin has it on, and to my understanding, the Airport Express also needs to have it enabled to work.
Is there any update or anything available that could help my problem, or am I pretty much out of luck?

  • Setting WPA security on an Airport Extreme Card

Hi all I’m a newbie to the wonderful world of MACs having just purchased a dual 2.3 G5 incorporating an Airport Extreme card.
Now, in my simplistic world I figured that I could use the G5 connected to the internet via an ethernet router to act as a base station and allow 2 PC laptops to have wireless internet access too. Also, it would be good to allow these laptops to share the printer connected to the G5 and, absolutely ideally, share files too.
The internet sharing part of this all this works fine up to a point – that point being until I try to secure the wireless network! I’ve tried using the WEP solution (in both 64 and 128 bit modes) but the laptops just won’t connect, even though they can both actually see the network. I also understand that WPA is more secure than WEP anyway so I thought I might try that instead. Trouble is, I can't find where I can set this up for the AE Card.
So basically – could anyone tell me, in simple terms, whether I can use just an Airport Extreme CARD (rather than a full Base Station) to give me WPA security in the setup that I’m trying to create?
It seems that the card itself DOES support WPA if it’s connecting to an already-enabled network, but all I can find in the configuration options for the card is the WEP security (which I can’t get to work AT ALL!) I tried using the Airport Admin Utility to set WPA-Personal mode (which I understand is equivalent to WPA-PSK mode?) but that only seems to be for the Base Station.
I have spent the last 2 days trawling through as much information as I can find (including on these discussion pages) and still cannot find an answer.
If anyone’s still reading this rather long post and could offer any help at all, I’d be very grateful indeed.
    Many thanks in advance,
    Andy
    PS I LOVE the MAC!!!

I need to set the network id to 10.10.1.1 will a new airport extreme do this?
    Sorry, but no.
The AirPort can only be set to 10.0.x.x, 192.168.x.x or 172.16.x.x

  • WPA security with both time capsule and airport express not working together

I want to set WPA security on my time capsule so that my teenager can not access wireless with out permission but when I add a security key my airport express disappears from list.
I have tried setting a password then the time capsule restarts and when it does the aiport express is gone from list and can not be found when rescanned.
Do I need to set time capsule and then reset airport express by pluggin it directly into desktop and resetting its software?
    Thanks

I would suggest, reconnecting the Express to the TC again. Use the AirPort Utility to make ALL configuration changes including the network extending settings. Then restart both base stations and check that the settings are still good. Then disconnect the Express and give it a few minutes to initialize. It should connect. If not, then the issue may be either the distance or obstructions (like walls, ceilings, floors, etc.) that is preventing the Express from getting a signal from the TC that is adequate enough to extend.

  • Wi-Fi with WPA security, unable to connect. anyone experience?

    Dear Ipod touch users,
My school is using Wi-Fi with WPA security, TKIP Data encryption and a Protected EAP (PEAP). The Select Authentication Method is Secured Password (EAP-MSCHAP V2). So far I've only been able to choose for WPA security, but cannot refine for TKIP, PEAP and MSCHAP V2.

Can anyone help me with this?

    Hello,
If you want to use your wpa_supplicant.conf file, you should set SECURITY="wpa-config" in your netcfg2 profile, and add WPA_CONF=/path/to/wpa_supplicant.conf (in the same file).  The passphrase error is probably caused by the fact that netcfg2 is not reading your wpa_supplicant conf file, and there is no password defined anywhere else.

  • I have a netgear n300 router broadcasting my wpa secured wireless network and bought an airport express to extend the network.  I did an Ethernet setup from a MacBook, got the green checkmark but no extension.  help.

I have a net gear n300 router transmitting my WPA secured network, and I bought an airport express to use as a network extender.  I configured it  via an Ethernet cable from a MacBook using manual setup in airport utility.  I got the green checkmark at the end, but it is not extending my signal.  Can you help me?

Unfortunately, most non-AirPort routers are not compatible with Apple's implementation of Wireless Distribution System (WDS)...so it very unlikely that your Netgear router can be extended wirelessly with the AirPort Express Base Station (AX).
The few non-AirPort routers that are known to work are:
    Linksys WRT54G or WRT54GS (not v5)
    Belkin F5D7230-4 and F5D7231
    BT Voyager 2091
    Netgear WGR614 v6

  • What is a WPA security passphrase

We just got back after being gone for 5 month.  Tried to get our wireless printer to work but it keeps saying that the WPA security passphrase is required.  The only thing that changed was that the wireless router when it was rebooted reverted back to the original signin.  We changed the ID and password but now the printer says it can't login because the passphrase configured on the printer does not match exactly.  I have rerun the setup numerous times but it still is saying that the security passphrase is different.  I even went so far as reinstalling the software.  Help.
