WPA2 and WPA On Homehub 2

My Homehub 2 wireless security shows two options in the basic setup:
And in advanced there are more options:
Do the advanced settings override what is set in the basic settings?
If WPA2 only is set, will the homehub only use WPA2?
Is this different to Homehub3?
I'm trying to get an Edimax range extender working and it appears that despint the Edimax supporting WPA2, it will only work with WEP on homehub2, but will work with WPA2 on homehub3.

WDS (Wireless Distribution System) only supports WEP, so maybe it is not working as a proper Universal Repeater?
I also believe that the HH does not support WDS.
There is another thread about an Edimax here http://community.bt.com/t5/BT-Infinity/Infinity-Home-Hub-3-0-amp-Edimax-EW-7416APn-V2-Universal/m-p/...
A Universal Repeater is simply a WiFi receiver and a WiFi transmitter coupled together, but they have to work in two phases, as they normally only have one radio module.
One to receive a packet from the home hub, and store it.
Next transmit the packet to the client.
This does however reduce throughput.
This can be seen on the TP Link device, which shows the two parts of the process on a web page.
You can see AP-UP when it is connected to the home hub, in addition to any devices that are connected to it.
There are some useful help pages here, for BT Broadband customers only, on my personal website.

  • Cannot switch between WPA2 and WPA Enterprise WiFi locations.

    Hello Everyone,
I have two Wifi locations I use, a WPA2 and a WPA Enterprise. When I switch locations from one to the other it looks as if that the Airport express resets but does not let go of the active location. I have to manually turn airport off and then on again to have it kick in. Anyone experience this and have a work around?
    Thanks in advance,

  • Cannot switch between WPA2 and WPA Enterprise locations.

    Hello Everyone,
I have two Wifi locations I use, a WPA2 and a WPA Enterprise. When I switch locations from one to the other it seems that the Airport express seems to reset but does not let go of the active location. I have to manually turn airport off and then on again to have it kick in. Anyone experience this and have a work around?
    Thanks in advance,
    K.

I am experiencing the same problem.
I have upgraded from 1.1.1.25.14 to 1.1.3.27.66. My Java platform has not changed (1.5.0_06). I renamed my old sqldeveloper directory to sqldeveloper.1 and unzipped the new installation into sqldeveloper. I then pointed it at Java and accepted the option to migrate my settings from the system folder of the previous release. I now have an installation where I have no tabs on my SQL worksheets but I do have tabs on source code windows such as those accessed from within packages.
My OS is Windows XP Professional SP2.
I know the migration worked because all of my connections were imported and my customised editor preferences were preserved in the new installation.
Additional behaviour: if I open 3 SQL worksheets and a source code window I can get to the worksheets by undocking the source code window to its own separate panel 3 times. I cannot then regroup them into one window, though, by dragging and dropping the source code window on top of the worksheets.
Also, when I open a new connection I no longer get a SQL worksheet by default, I have to right click on the connection to open one.

  • HT1178 What the difference is between WPA and WPA2 and how are these settings affecting the access of other computers to the internet through my Time Capsule

I have a Time Capsule of the 4th generation and I am pretty impressed since I just had a fried harddrive on my 3 month old Imac and Time Capsule restored it fully including all programs etc. without having me to put in all serial numbers etc. for that I give it an A+. However what I find very frustrating is the very short and incomplete user manual and setup instructions. I give those a D-. It does not explain the consequences of certain choices to a normel non computer gig user like me:
I do not understand what the consequences and difference is between the security setting WPA/WPA2 and WPA2 when setting it up. It would be helpful if the manual would explain something like: If you set it onto WPA2 then computers older than XXX years will not able to hook up to the internet through your router...or the likes, since I slowly supect this may be the reason for some of my troubles.
I also have a 5 year old PC with vista connected to the Time Capsule. It can wireless connect to the Time Capsule and access the printer (I have managed that after some painful hours...) but it cannot access the internet with that PC through the timecapsule wireless, only if I hook it up with a cable. Why? Does that have to do with the fact that I have set the TIme Capsule to WPA2?
Our PS3 can connect wireless, no problem. However, I friend of mine tried it with a quite new Toshiba Notebook and he could see the Time Capsule but again it shows the line from the Time Capsule to the internet blocked. All other computers linked with data cable to the Time Capsule are connected to the internet no problem. What have we done wrong? Should I change the security setting to WPA/WPA2?
I tried the latter, but then another problem does come up, which was there from beginning on: When I change the settings for my Time Capsule my Imac suddenly cannot find the Timne Capsule anymore, even so I am only 3feet away from it. When I set it up for the first time 3 month ago it drove me crazy. The very first time it found the Time Capsule right away. But when I discuverd a mistake in my initial setup and I went through the settings again to change stuff it suddenly could not find the Time Capsule anymore. Only after frustrating 20 times or so with turning wi-fi on and off several times inbetween did it suddenly find the Time Capsule in the set up menu. However, when I tried changing my security setting to WPA/WPA2 today to see whether this solves my other problems again it could not find the Time Capsule when I was finished with the settings and I had to give up/cancel. Why is that???
I would really appreciate some help here. But please I am not a computer gig and normally always had assistance with these things. On the other hand I am not all stupid either (even so these manuals assuming we all grew up sleeping on a computer make me feel stupid).....
    Thank you all in advance

Hello Schimi. The Time Capsule is a kind of product that offer you two possibility:
    - To use the TC as a router or as an external HD.
The difference between WPA and WPA 2 are:
    - They are two kinds of internet connection.
WPA uses dynamic key encryption , which means that the key is constantly changing and makes the invasion of a wireless network more difficult than WEP . WPA is considered one of the highest levels of wireless security for your network and is recommended if your devices support this kind of encryption . Newer routers offer WPA2 security . WPA2 is compatible with WPA , but offers higher security level . In fact, it meets the high standards of many government agencies . If the router and computer support WPA2 , this should be your choice.
If you need any help or if you find some difficult setting up it you can contact Apple Support.
I am sure that they can help you with that.
I am sory for the delay. I holpe that you solve your issue.

  • Extreme in WPA2 and Bridge mode

Extreme (802.11n) that we want to use as Access Point. Latest firmware v7.4.1.
Setting the Extreme up with no wireless security let me connect users wirelessly with the Extreme in Bridge mode. Using WPA/WPA2 only works when the Extreme is not in Bridge mode. Using Bridge mode and WPA/WPA2 causes complete loss to the unit, even with Airport Utility.
    Thanks

The Verizon modem/router is already providing DHCP and NAT services for the network.
If you have the AirPort Extreme that is connected to the Verizon modem/router also setup to provide DHCP and NAT, as you state, then you have two devices both trying to provide routing services for the network.
You only want one device providing DHCP and NAT for a network.
You are likely not getting DHCP IP address conflicts since Apple uses a different DHCP range than Verizon, but with both devices providing NAT services, it is easy to see why you are picking up the Double NAT error.
All of your Apple devices need to be in Bridge Mode if you want to avoid the Double NAT error.

  • WPA2 and Hexadecimal keys

I'm not sure if I'm missing something, but here it goes...
In Airport Admin Utility running under OSX 10.4.X, the WPA/WPA2 key could be either an 8-63 character ASCII password or a password of exactly 64 hexadecimal characters. You had to explicitly switch between ASCII (password) and Hexadecimal (passphase).
In the new Airport Utility running under Leopard, it seems like you can only enter 8-63 ASCII password. When I open my AEBS with Airport Utility, the "Wireless Password" field is empty and I can only enter in up to 63 characters. Help also says to use an 8-63 ASCII password.
What am I missing? Did they change it so you have to use a max of 63 characters?
    Thanks!

After much research, I think I have an answer. Airport Utility in Leopard only lets you enter an 8-63 ASCII password. You must then use the "Equivalent Network Password..." option to view the 64 character hex password for legacy devices.
    More details:
    *WPA = hex password*
On my existing network config (generated with Airport Admin Utility in Tiger) I had a 64/hex password. Using my macbook, I can only connect to the network using the WPA encryption option and my 64/hex password. If I use WPA2 encryption option and my 64/hex password, connection is failed.
    *WPA2 = ASCII password*
First, I set my AX to only allow WPA2 connections. I tested this on my AX by setting the WPA2 password to "appleapple". I connected to the network from my laptop using WPA2 and my ASCII password "appleapple" and everything worked fine. Then, I got the equivalent 64/hex password by using the "Equivalent Network Password..." option in Airport Utility and attempted to connect, it failed.
If I setting the AX to allow both WPA and WPA2 connections, I could use either "appleapple" or its 64/hex equivalent.
What I think Apple did was they attempted to make things easier by making you use the ASCII password model, which also pushes people in to using WPA2. They allow you to select "WPA and WPA2 Personal" purely for backwards compatibility.
So I think Airport Utility is range checking for 63 characters. When it reads my config with 64 characters, it throws it out and won't read it. I'll bet that if I read my config and the write it back, it will go back without a password (hopefully throwing an error).
The net result is that, as is, my network works totally fine, however if I want to change anything else (like enable NAT port mapping for BTMM) I'll need to rekey all of my devices.

  • WEP and WPA?

I have some old and new laptops. The new ones can use WPA but the older ones seem to only support WEP. Is it possible to configure my router (WRT54GS) to use both WEP and WPA?
    Thanks

No.  Your WRT54GS cannot do WEP and WPA at the same time.
Check and see if there is an updated driver for your old wireless adapter, that will allow it to do WPA.  If not, the best solution to your problem is to replace your wireless adapter with one that can do WPA and WPA2.
Another work around solution is a two router solution:
    Modem -- WRT54GS #1 -- WRT54GS #2
                   WEP                  WPA
                  192.168.1.1       192.168.2.1
(Note: LAN port on WRT54GS #1 is wired to Internet port on WRT54GS #2.)
The problem with this solution is that the computers on #1 will not be able to access anything (computers, printers, etc.) that is connected to #2

  • Running two SSIDs, one with WPA2 and one with WEP

    Hi,
    I have a WRT610N.
How isolated are the two SSIDs that I can run?
I know one is running at 5GHz and the other at 2.4GHz.  I've given each an SSID and a different security policy:  I run "sensitive" stuff under WPA2, and I run the other for legacy hardware that supports only WEP (eg my son's Nintento DS).
But are these two keys to the same house, so to speak?  If someone cracks my WEP network, can they access the machines on the WPA network?  Or are they completely isolated?
    Does this make sense?
    Thanks for any enlightenment.
    -- Mike
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Yes, they are "two keys to the same house".   The "house" is your LAN.   If someone cracks your WEP, and wirelessly breaks into your router, then they have access to your LAN.   This would be like allowing a hacker to wire his computer directly to your router.   Being on your LAN, puts the hacker in a very good position to break into any other computer on your network.    Your WPA2 encryption does not give you any protection from someone who is already on your LAN.
The solution to your problem is to run two separate wireless routers:
    modem  ----  router1  ---  router2
router1 is set to "Local IP address"  192.168.1.1 , WEP encryption , set "AP isolation" to "enabled" , (note: no printers on router1)
router2 is set to "Local IP address"  192.168.2.1 , WPA2 encryption, use a strong password (and not anything similar to the WEP password).
modem is wired to Internet port of router1
LAN port of router1 is wired to Internet port of router2
The wireless 2.4 GHz channels on the two routers must be different, and are preferably at least 5 channels apart.  Usually channels 1, 6, or 11 work best.
With the above two router setup, the Internet port of router2 should protect you from any intruders on router1.

  • IPad 3 with iOS 6 fails to connect to WiFi with WPA2 and AES - any solutions available?

    Hello *,
after upgrading my iPad 3 to iOS 6 it constantly fails to connect to WiFi with WPA2 and AES - hidden or broadcasted SSID - at home and at work because the device does not accept the WPA2 password. This is also the case for my iPhone 4S but both devices did work with WiFi (WPA2 / AES) perfectly with previously installed iOS 5.1.1.
I tried to downgrade to iOS 5.1.1 but it seems to be no longer possible to downgrade for both iPad 3 and iPhone 4S as the certification and signage window for iOS 5.1.1 maybe has been closed by Apple.
Does anyone know about a possible solution to connect to WiFi with WPA2 and AES with iPad 3 / iPhone 4S and iOS 6 upgrade?
Thank you very much for any help and advise.
    Best regards from Germany

    Additional things to try.
Try this first. Turn Off your iPad. Then turn Off (disconnect power cord for 30 seconds or longer) the wireless router & then back On. Now boot your iPad. Hopefully it will see the WiFi.
Go to Settings>Wi-Fi and turn Off. Then while at Settings>Wi-Fi, turn back On and chose a Network.
Change the channel on your wireless router (Auto or Channel 6 is best). Instructions at http://macintoshhowto.com/advanced/how-to-get-a-good-range-on-your-wireless-netw ork.html
Another thing to try - Go into your router security settings and change from WEP to WPA with AES.

I have a macbook pro and use BT homehub 3.  can't work out how to connect my time capsule. can anyone help?  thanks

Just need to plug the TC in to the hub in bridge mode.. do not try and bridge the homehub.. it is not possible with the setup BT uses.
To bridge the TC.. plug it directly into a computer by ethernet.. no other connection to the TC or the computer.
Press and hold in reset until the front LED flashes rapidly.. about 10sec.
    Release the reset.
Open the airport utility and setup the TC to bridge mode.
The actual method depends on version of the OS and airport utility you use.
    This is version 5.
Sorry I cannot post the v6 as I am on a snow leopard computer now. But you go to the network tab, and choose off bridge mode for method of connection. It will be NAT and dhcp by default.
Then setup wireless.. you have a number of choices here.
Either setup with the same SSID Security and password, as the homehub uses.. or a different name, and password..
Each method works fine.. but you sometimes have issues with wireless channels.. for now leave it on auto and see what happens.. if you have issues lock down the radio channels on both devices.. use one out of the following on each, 1, 6, 11 or 13 in UK.. so say 6 on the homehub then 13 onthe TC.
Update the TC.. unplug fromt the computer and plug it into the homehub.
If you have other issues with the setup tell us what OS you run so we can post suitable screenshots.

Problem connecting wirelessly from iMac to NETGEAR router, get invalid password message with WPA and WPA-2 encryption in place but if I remove them, so no security, can connect without a problem. Help!!

Thank you for your suggestion but I have already had a couple of phone sessions with NETGEAR support and they don't see any problems with the router settings etc. They referred me to Apple support, who helped me discover that it is possible to communicate with the router but only if I turn off the encryption/security software, which I don't want to do. The frustrating thing is that I can connect wirelessly from a laptop running Windows 7 and two Anroid smart phones, with WPA-2 in place, without a problem. Do you have any other ideas?

  • Mixture of WEP and WPA on wireless network

I have a WRT54G and a cable modem. The router is configured to use WPA. I have many personal wireless devices (print servers, computers, access points, etc.) on my network. All are configured to use WPA. My wife and I just got company-issued laptops from our employer that have software that does not support WPA (we can't change the software). The laptops only support WEP. Is there a way to run a mixture of WEP and WPA on a wireless network? If I have to buy an additional router, that is OK. I'm looking for a solution that will allow me to run both WPA and WEP over the same internet connection.
Would MAC filtering on my current router be a possible solution?

It is not possible to use WEP & WPA at a same time in a router .....
But you can enable the MAC flitering on the router for all wireless devices ..... let me know if it works ....

  • Wireless setup WPA2 and software

Problem. I have about 25 airport extreme base stations put around our school. There seems to be one problem. We moved our network to WPA2 and have a radius server all setup and working. everything is working perfect except when we try to get 25 ibooks working on one airport. After about 19 or 21 connect the seems to be a problem with the airport and it locks up. What is going on, i think that these airports can handle about 50 encrypted users. And about this software Airport management utility and software, where do i get it, would help my setup.
    thanks

The Airport Management Tools software package is available via the link under the heading "Additional Resources" at http://www.apple.com/support/airport
Several people have noted problems with Base Stations in multiple Base Station setups, which seem to be related to use of firmware version 5.6. These problems seem to go away with use of the previous version 5.5.1 (which of course doesn't support WPA2) - get it at:

  • Configuring WEP and WPA on 1262 AP

This seems like it should be quite simple.  We're in the process of migrating users from WEP over to WPA.  In the transition we'd like to make both SSID's available until the old WEP is phased out.  I have found that both can be broadcasted on the same frequency as long as VLAN's are used.  For simplicity purposes, I have configured VLAN1(WPA) and VLAN2(WEP).  VLAN1 is the native VLAN, and when connecting there I receive a DHCP address no problem.  However, connections to the WEP SSID will not resolve an address.
I've also read that I can switch my uplink port on the Switch to a Trunk port and route those VLAN's, however, I really don't want to introduce new VLAN's into our entire core structure.  Is there any way to just make VLAN1 and VLAN2 able to both work properly in this scenario?

Well that is the right idea I think but my setup is a little more complicated than that.  So there is absolutely no way to do this without those VLAN's going past the AP?  I really do not want to introduce any new VLANs into my environment right now.  I would thing there would be a way to "bridge" the interfaces so that they both work the same, even though they are VLAN'ed.
Also, in my configuration, I'm using WEP on Radio0 and WPA on Radio0 and Radio1, so it's a bit more challenging than the configuration provided.  Can anyone confirm or deny that there is no way to do this without broadcasting those VLAN's throughout the network?
