'Wrap' formatting of inline objects?

When I place an object (an image) within a body of text, and wrap is selected, the text flows around the object in the manner that has been selected as long as the object is 'floating.' However, as soon as the object has been made 'inlline,' the text no longer flows around it, but instead is pushed above and below the object and the wrap options are greyed out.
What is the secret to maintaining the 'wrap' options for an inline object, if any?

Alistair - I'm confused... First, Apple's Pages works like Bob described... an image can be inserted "inline" and you can select "object causes wrap" - and as the text moves, the image moves with the text. I expect iBooks Author to work the same way!
As soon as I select 'inline' iBooks Author deselects the "object causes wrap" and you can't pick the wrapping options.
I've tried selecting "anchored" does allow you to do the wrapping options, but if you edit the text around the object (like maybe adding a bunch of text above the image), then the image doesn't move and you've got to move the image again.
I think what I'm learning is that iBooks Author is not a text editing tool - they expect you to have your text locked down when you come into iBA and then fooling with images would be easier.

In the previous versions of pages I was able to center an inline object such as an imported equation with a baseline shift. I cannot find this in pages 5.0.

Precise placement of inline objects

Hi there!
I need some help with placement of inline objects. When I work with floating objects, everything works fine. I can insert image and mark certain part of image with circe (from Shapes menu) or pull the arrow from the specific part of tex to the image. See picture below.
But off course, floating objects dont move with text.
If I change objects in Inline objects I cannot put them where I want. See vertical arrow on the picture below. I added also Wrap Inspector, so you can see my settings. Altough I tried all possible settings with Wraping and No wraping. Please help!

Red vertical arrow is part of the group. I mentioned it just because I want it to be under the word "page" in the text above (like in first image in my first post). But You help me discover limited placement options. Thanks again!
There is another thing. When I set my group of objects as inline object and go to Arrange, Align Objects I cannot set alignement (options are grey) - see image below. I'm starting to believe that I wanted to do something impossible.

How to get Date Format from Local Object.

I am not looking for Date value. I am looking for current local date format ("mm/dd/yyyy or dd/mm/yyyy or mon/dd/yyyy) whatever local date format. I could not find example which show how to get date format from "Locale" object.

What does Inline object "Y offset" mean exactly?

I am confused about inline object y offset. What does it mean exactly? I looked it up on adobe help, here is what it says there.
Inline
Aligns the anchored object with the baseline of the insertion point. You can adjust the Y Offset to position the object above or below the baseline. This is the default type of anchored object. In earlier versions of InDesign, these objects were called inline graphics.
So.. is the baseline at the insertion point? If the y offset is a negative number, does that mean the baseline move up? How come the object doesn't move ? like the adobe help say, "adjust the y offset to position the object above or below the baseline", doesn't it mean the baseline should stay and object moves accordingly?

The behavior of inlines is also tied to the leadingof the line in which they are located. When the line has autoleading specified, the inline starts withthe bottom edge on the baseline, and the leading for the entire line is adjusted to the height of the inline object. Changing the y offset in such cases would appear to make the inline object appear stationary while shifting the baseline up or down.Waht is happening is the "auto" amount of leading is being adjusted to compensate for the shift.
If the line in which the object is inserted uses a fixed leading, that leading is honored, and the inline object may cover part of the text above. Changing the offset will make the boject appear to move up or down realtive to the baseline, which will remain fixed by the assigned leading.

Inline objects in page layout mode

Before I drive myself any more insane than I already am can someone please confirm, or otherwise, that it isn't possible to use inline objects in page layout mode or, indeed, inside text boxes in word processing mode? Assuming this is the case can anyone suggest a work around?

Here is the way I work (mainly because I don't store my photos in iPhoto).
drag and drop the picture file onto the doc's page.
select the picture frame with its square handles
Cut it so it will no longer appear but is stored in the clipboard.
Put the cursor where you want to insert the picture then paste.

Receiving an 'Error formatting cross-tab object' error when paging through preview

I have a report with two subreports in the group footer. One of the subreports contains a cross-tab report. When I preview the report as a whole, occasionally I get an error formatting cross-tab object and then no more pages of the report are displayed. If instead I choose to export the report to pdf, Crystal Reports crashes. Any ideas on what might be causing these problems?

Actually, you can search for them by entering the KBA number in the search box in the top right corner of this web page. KBA 1214209 comes up fine. KBA 1212875 does not, but it's not really applicable.
While we are at the search box, see if a search term like 'crystal cross tab' (or something like that) bring up other KBAs.

Inline object in portrait-layout text disappears when switched to anchored?

I'm trying to add a simple drop-cap to a text-only book that I'm putting together in iBooks Author. In Landscape orientation, it works fine; I add a text box, position it at the beginning of the chapter text, set it to Anchored placement, and turn on Object causes wrap.
In portrait orientation, however, "anchor" isn't working. Specifically, if I create an object, copy-paste it into the pageless body text (so it's inline), and then switch it to Anchored placement (via either the Inspector or the toolbar), the object vanishes. Completely--it's gone from the document entirely so far as I can tell. I tried it with a text box and various shapes, and also tried creating a new document with a different template--the behavior was the same in every case. The object just disappears.
Now, that just can't be the intended behavior, but is this a reproduceable bug for other people? And/or is there a workaround so I can get a drop-cap in portrait view?

Hi Eric,
I believe the problem is because the leading on the image paragraph is now set to 14pt, whereas previously it was probably set to auto. Auto leading is the only way to get images to push the text down like you want. Note also that for some reason, ID has a preference "Apply leading to whole paragraphs" turned off by default. Unless you select the whole paragraph, auto-leading will not work the way you want it to until you have this preference switched on.

Inline Objects Causing Grief

I am writing a diary in the Word Processing layout of Pages, which is 95% text, but I want to be able to add photographs and other objects to illustrate it. I am having great difficulty making objects stay inline. I position them exactly where I want them (floating) and then click inline and they jump all over the place, and often a long way down the page. I often want to put two photographs together, side by side, as well, and this seems almost impossible. I managed it once or twice some time ago but can't for the life of me remember how I did it, or repeat it! I have tried using a Page Layout document instead, but when I click on the photographs the inline/floating option is grayed and I cannot select it. I have read the Pages User's Guide but cannot find the answer to my question. Can anyone help, please? This doesn't seem as intuitive as most things Mac usually are. Thank you.

In this first example, I inserted the two pictures, defined them as inline with no wrap and I checked that there was not an extraneous space character between them.
Here, I grouped the two objects then defined them as inline and defined the wrap mode.
The same objects are grouped differently then I applied the same kind of wrap.

Making an inline object floating changes an entire document - help!

I am working on a directory set up in pages. I am trying to get rid of one picture that was set up as an inline picture rather than floating. If I delete it, it deletes 20 subsequent pages in my document. How can I just delete that picture? Even if I change it to floating, it deletes all subsequent pages - help!!

Insert a Section Break at the end of the page on which you have the inline pricture.
Without going into a long explanation, it is the way you have laid out your document that is causing the problem. The section break will hold all your remaining pages where they are.
Probably you have pushed a lot of material into place with spaces, tabs and returns. These are interacting with the text wrap on the foating image to pop everything else out of position. A tidy layout using proper formatting survives minor changes to layouts and can be easier correct where needed.

Text wrap around an achored object

I'm continually frustrated by a text wrap issue around an achored object in a story. I have two anchored textframes that are taking up the top half of a text frame, one of them has a full column text wrap applied to it which forces the first title of the regular text to begin beneath it. My issue is that sometimes this title falls too close to the anchored text frames but if I add space to the bottom of the text wrap, the title does not snug to the text wrap but will stay tight until the wrap adjustment invades the cap height and then it will suddenly jump way down what looks like the full line height of the style, creating way too much of a gap. I can't seem to get a clean even space between my anchored textframe and the first line of text. I'm doing hundreds of files with this set up and they are looking different because the anchored text frames are all different sizes and I can't get that space between them and the first title to be uniform. I'm sure I'm missing an option somewhere, but I can't figure out what it is. I want the first line of text to snug up to the edge of the text wrap, and it just won't do it. I've looked through all my style options and can't figure out what I'm missing. "Align to grid" is set to "None," and "Start Paragraph" is set to "Anywhere."
I'm really confused by this. Anyone have any ideas what I'm doing wrong or if I've run up against a limitation in the application?

Your "solution" does not work in this instance. The boxes you see in my image are the first things on that page. The anchor paragraphs are set to start in a new column so that they purposely start a new page. The story starts 3 pages before this and you can't have anchored objects more than a spread away from their anchors, so your solution simply does not work. I would have to break my lesson into multiple stories, which is the very thing I'm trying not to do to keep my workflow efficient.
It looks like it is a limitation of ID's anchored object workflow (which has never been ideal, but I'm trying to work with it). Unfortunately, tables are also not a safe solution because long tables used together with span/split column features cause ID to crash (predictably)--as far as I can tell, Adobe doesn't appear to be interested in fixing this bug. I've learned the hardway not to combine them in any workflow unless I want to restart ID multiple times a day.
In case you are wondering, this complicated workflow resulted from a shortcoming in ID anyway. I have to place the text in table cells so that I can use the SIde Heads plugin to pull them automatically into anchored objects. I have to anchor them into floating objects to get the rounded corners on background squares that is BEHIND the text. I could do it as tables in the flow of text if I could create anchored backgrounds with rounded corners that floated behind the tables, but unfortunately, ID will not let you change the stacking order of anchored objects--they always float in front and there is no option to push them behind--and tables are uniformly square and boring. I tried several times to create an easily automatable workflow for this project, and complicated as it is, this is the only one that actually works.
I will have to manually adjust the paragraph spacing and leading. That seems to be only adjustment that gives me the fine control that I want. I just wish it were consistent from document to document so I could set it in the style and not have to eyeball everything.
