Wraparound book cover: How best to do this?

I've designed a wraparpund cover for a trade paperback using three separate composite images from Photoshop Elements 8: front, cover, back cover, and spline. Each of the three parts consists of layers for background, text, and on the front cover, the image of an airplane.
The backgrounds for all three parts have been made from a single photo of a mountainside partially obscured by clouds. I've managed to crop the images and join them side-by-side to minimize the hard line of demarcation between the spline and front and back covers, but they are still visible. And although the lines will be camouflaged pretty well when the cover is folded around the book, I'd like to make them less apparent.
Each of the three images has been added to the InDesign cover document directly from PSE8 as a PSD file. I'm still a novice at this, so I'm assuming that this means the layers are still separate (?). Is it possible at this point within InDesign to edit the demarcation lines so that they are less noticeable in the printed cover?
Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

I'm almost overwhelmed by the willingness of forum experts to give of their
time to assist strangers muddling around in the wilderness.
On the subject of Photoshop PDF, I certainly didn't understand what I think
I understand now: saving in that format doesn't close the door on any
subsequent changes I want to make in that file. I can back out of it, change
something and resave it as Photoshop PDF without losing any quality. Also as
I think I understand because you told me, going from PSD to PDF and back to
PSD negatively affects image quality.
But that's not the initial concern I had, which is this: When working in
InDesign and ready to check out how my cover would look in PDF because
that's what I need to upload to the print-on-demand service, the window that
opens with options included "High Quality Print" or something to that
effect. The POD service specifies "Print Quality," which I interpreted as
meaning the same thing.
But when trying to save from PSD to PDF, the only option I have is Photoshop
PDF, and the options box that opens up has very few selections. I can't
remember exactly how it looked, but I think it allowed me to select quality
from low to high, but the absence of more available selections led me to
believe that converting to PDF from Photoshop was a lesser quality option
than doing so from InDesign. From what I've been reading today, I'm more
confused than ever. If going direct from PSD to Photoshop PDF to uploading
to the POD site results in a high-quality final product, I'm a happy camper.
Which brings me back to another major question, which is if I can build a
PSD cover in Elements and go direct to a PDF that meets or exceeds
requirements, why did I get so wrapped around the axle about whether to
purchase v5.5 or 5 in order to build the cover? What's the advantage of
building the cover in InDesign with pieces created in Elements? I've no
doubt that InDesign is far more capable, but it appears that I don't need it
to accomplish my relatively modest goals. I've already bought it, so I can't
back out now, but the question lingers.
And then there's the issue of dealing with the more obvious hard edges at
the top where the front and back covers meet the spline, and that original
question still lingers as well: is there something I can do with InDesign to
make these hard transitions less noticeable? I'm not concerned about the
lower portions of the cover where mountain meets mountain, but the
mountain-cloud boundaries are much more obvious.
Due to file size and email limitations, I have attached the first of two
versions of the cover. It's a regular(?) PDF of the InDesign version made
with the front and back covers and spline as created as separate pieces in
Elements. I'll send the second after this one finally departs.
Please don't laugh when you view them. I'm trying hard . . .

I am trying to make a iphoto book but every time i click on an individual photo (or folder) it opens up a new book. How can i avoid this?

Export the slideshow out of iPhoto as a QT movie file via the Export button in the lower toolbar.  Select Size = Medium or Large.
Open iDVD, select a theme and drag the exported QT movie file into the open iDVD window being careful to avoid any drop zones.
Follow this workflow to help assure the best quality video DVD:
Once you have the project as you want it save it as a disk image via the File ➙ Save as Disk Image  menu option. This will separate the encoding process from the burn process.
To check the encoding mount the disk image, launch DVD Player and play it.  If it plays OK with DVD Player the encoding is good.
Then burn to disk with Disk Utility or Toast at the slowest speed available (2x-4x) to assure the best burn quality.  Always use top quality media:  Verbatim, Maxell or Taiyo Yuden DVD-R are the most recommended in these forums.
If iDVD was not preinstalled on your Mac you'll have to obtain it by purchasing a copy of the iLife 09 disk from a 3rd party retailer like Amazon.com: ilife 09: Software or eBay.com.  Why, because iDVD (and iWeb) was discontinued by Apple over a year ago.
Why iLife 09 instead of 11?
If you have to purchase an iLife disc in order to obtain the iDVD application remember that the iLife 11 disc only provides  themes from iDVD 5-7.  The Software Update no longer installs the earlier themes when starting from the iLIfe 11 disk nor do any of the iDVD 7 updaters available from the Apple Downloads website contain them.
Currently the only sure fire way to get all themes is to start with the iLife 09 disc:
This shows the iDVD contents in the iLife 09 disc via Pacifist:
You then can upgrade from iDVD 7.0.3 to iDVD 7.1.2 via the updaters at the Apple Downloads webpage.
NOTE:  If you're running iPhoto 9.5 the export options will be different.

Firstly, time to get rid of the 2 x 512MB FBDIMMs in there, they add more heat and use more watts then they add to the system. If you need more, and 4 or 8 DIMMs is ideal, Amazon has 2x2GB sets $22 - about 1/50th what I paid for 1GB new.
Buy a 250GB Samsung EVO SSD $129
Pick up Carbon Copy Cloner http://www.bombich.com to clone the system to the SSD
A sled adapter for the SSD from Icy Dock $14 Amazon.com
7-8 years overdue for new system drive! amazed it lasted this long. An SSD plus some WD Black 2TB drives or larger should do the trick.
you can also put the SSD in the lower optical drive bay and use one of the two ODD "spare" SATA ports for the SSD - an SSD is the best way to improve the performance of our old Mac Pro 2006-7 models.
When you downloaded the Lion installer that was when to create a flash type installer with Lion DiskMaker.
If you have put in a new-ish graphic card then OS X 10.6.0 may not support it.

I was listening to Audio Books on my iPod Touch while on a motor trip when the speed of the playback suddenly changed to fast forward for all the stored audio books. How can I correct this?

Actually found this answer in the archives: When the audio book is playing, hold finger on middle of screen until the speed selection message appears and change from 2x to 1x. Thanks for your response though!

• When adding audio books to ipod either manually or by syncing, the tracks seem to be in the right order but they play back in a random order which means you can't listen to the book. How do you overcome this? (Bill)

I have tried adding audio books to my ipod classic, both by syncing and manually. The tracks come up in the right order in the menu but when listening they will often play (not always) in a random order. How do I overcome this, as it is making listening to books impossible.  (Tarraganda)

I have found the problem myself when I got into the Settings. Somehow it had been put onto shuffle all music files and once I turned that off it reverted to normal. I realised something basic was wrong when our other ipod that had been synced at the same time didn't have a problem. However, I had put all the books on manually, one album at a time as problems occurred when syncing the whole library, including multiple albums for the same piece of music.

• Transferring some files from old hard drive to new mac book pro: How do I do this?  I bought a SATA Wire, and can't figure out how to get my files

Hi there, my old mac book recently died and I opted to buy a new macbook pro, instead of pouring lots of money into the old computer.  I was able to get my hard drive out, and I bought a 2.5" Sata Nootbook Drive Upgrade Kit.  I have also installed superduper!....but I can't really figure out how to get everything to work.  I just want to be able to take some of my files from my hard drive, not everything...
Any suggestions?
Thanks!

I don't know what a "2.5" Sata Nootbook Drive Upgrade Kit" is but if you have a internal drive you need to connect all you needed was a $20 IDE/SATA to USB adapter
You don't need Superduper, that's software designed to clone a entire Mac's boot drive to a external drive for bootable backup purposes using the same machine/make/model.
Since the new Mac is different than the old one you can't clone (well you could but it will break the machine) the old drive to the new one.
However you can use the adapter above and software Apple provides in the Utilities folder on the NEW MAC, called Migration Assistant to transfer your User to the new machine.
However this might not be the best course of action as it can transfer unwanted data and cause problems in the Library, old programs that won't run on 10.7, etc.
You can simply create the same named user on the machine (System Preferences > Accounts) log into it and then connect the external drive with the adapter and copy the contents of your users folders over and place into the same.
It's always good to have another Admin level user account on the machine in case the primary one has a User based issue and you need to log into the other and grab files. So if either manually or via using Migration Assistant you wind up with two user accounts on the machine, it's really not that big of a deal.

• Airport Extreme to extend wireless – How best to set this up?

I added an Airport Extreme to my ISP Service provider box in order to extend my home / home office networking capabilities. Currently I have a MBP (May 2010 model) with ethernet & wireless; a PBG4 (Feb 2005 model) with ethernet & wireless; an eMac (Feb 2005 model) with JUST ethernet; and an iPad3 (March 2012) with of course just wireless. But I am not certain that I have set this up optimally.  Here's what I have done and if anyone could comment on this it would be greatly appreciated!
I have my ISP's modem "B-box" (which has 2 ethernet ports OUT plus its own Wireless) which I have used the past year.  The problem is range for wireless and extending ethernet (via cable) to the 3 levels of the house.  So I added an Airport Extreme to solve that issue and believe I am almost there!  The house has 3 levels and I will call them Level A (basement, underground); Level B (ground floor) and Level C (upstairs).  Without Airport Extreme it is possible to get wireless on on 3 levels, but it drops-out often in my main, office (Level-A) location so that was the incentive to get good wireless everywhere using the Airport Extreme.
Here's my setup today:
ISP "B-box" (as it is called) located on Level B and emits a wireless signal and I have called that SteveBelWiFi     ---There is an ethernet cable that goes down to Level A.
On Level A I have my home office with a MacBook Pro-13" (May 2010) running Mountain Lion 10.8.2.  The Ethernet cable from the B-box arrives in my office and is plugged into the WAN port of my new Airport Extreme.
From this Airport extreme I have the following setup: (there are 3 ethernet out ports on the Airport Extreme - 5th generation - most recent model)
Ethernet cable #1 plugged into my MBP
Ethernet cable #2 running to Level C where it is plugged into an eMac (Feb 2005)
A USB cable going from the USB Out port on the Apple Extreme to an unpowered USB hub
From the hub, one USB cable to my Canon MP640 Printer/Scanner*
From the hub, one USB cable to a 300 mb LaCie external Hard Drive
Ethernet cable #3 plugged into the ethernet port of my Canon MP630 Printer/Scanner *(Needed because when one attaches a printer/scanner to the Airport Extreme via USB it can only print, not scan, so I configured the scanner portion of the MP640 to run via ethernet…)
WIRELESS:  I used Airport Utility to CREATE A WIRELESS NETWORK (not "extend a wireless network")  and so I now have these 2 additional wireless network choices for my Macs or iPad:  Steve Airport WiFi     and also via the Airport Extreme:   Steve Airport WiFi 5GHz
What I would prefer is to have ONE wireless choice instead of 3.  So I am guessing that I could re-setup the Airport Extreme by choosing "Extend a wireless network" (instead of what I did "create a wireless network") so that the SteveBelWiFi is then simply the ONLY wireless choice.  BUT how will this work?  The B-box is still emitting a signal on level B -- correct?  If I "extend" the wireless, I see that I get to choose an existing wireless so I would choose SteveBelWiFi
WELL NOW I'VE GONE AND MESSED-UP EVERYTHING!!!!!!   Before submitting this questions I decided to try to change to "extend a wireless connection" and I chose the      only to get a warning message that this couldn't be done and then a yellow triangle with an "!" inside next to my Airport Extreme.  I did a "factory reset" like this:
To perform a factory default reset on the AirPort Extreme:
First remove power from the Extreme.
Using a paperclip or similar object, depress the reset button, and while still depressed plug the Extreme into power.
Keep the reset button depressed until the status light on the Extreme starts flashing rapidly, and then, release the reset button.
BUT NOTHING-- Airport Utility DOES NOT FIND my Airport Extreme - the only way I can now connect to the internet is to plug-in my B-Box ethernet cable directly to my MacBook Pro.  Everything else-- gone.
WHY WON'T Airport Utility re-find my Airport Extreme when I do the reset?  I let it glow with the amber button for over 10 minutes, - NOTHING.
Really lost, depressed and fully not understanding this now…
Truly need serious HELP here--  I'm almost shut-down…
Thanks anyone,
Best regards,
Steve Schulte
Thursday 10 January 2013

I left-out one thing:  Prior to the factory when I was trying to choose "Extend a wireless Network"  I of course chose SteveBelWiFi

• In-Service Warranty Repair Denied: Would Really Appreciate Tips on How Best to Handle This -- INTERIM PROGRESS REPORT, Bottom of Thread

Hi, everybody,
Four days ago  (4-21-08), I returned my IBM T60 for repair via the prepaid box.
While I was bummed that it stopped booting for no apparent reason and I'd have to do without it, I wasn't concerned, because as a newspaper and magazine reporter and editor, I've been using Thinkpads and IBM Service since the pre-Pentium days, without ever having a problem.
But today when I called to see if my unit was on its way back, I was informed it's on 'billable hold.' IBM claimed the damage was due to a spill and thus, not covered. I could get my laptop back right now, broken, pay $750 for them to repair it (I did not spill a drop of anything into or on it) or open a dispute.
And -- get this -- it would be four to five business days before I hear back from IBM regarding the dispute's disposition.
I was told the reason for this long wait was because 'we have a big backlog of dispute cases' and 'our technicians have to take pictures and make a report documenting the spill' -- which did not occur on my end.
So who documents my side? Nobody interviewed me. The prepaid box did not even contain the forms IBM service always used to send for me to fill out describing the problem.
I asked to speak to a supervisor -- nobody available. And the message I left on a supervisor's answering machine was not returned.
Needless to say, I am very upset. I absolutely positively did not spill anything into or onto my laptop. If they said dog hair or dander, okay, I've got two large mutts. But no spillage.
Plus, the T60 is among those thinkpad models promoted by Lenovo via videos on its own site & Youtube in which Thinkpads get smooshed by heavy equipment, run over by motorcycles, submerged in diving pools, etc.!
(I just downloaded the whole lot, in case I need them for Small Claims Court).
However, I hope it doesn't come to that, and would similarly prefer to avoid anti-Lenovo blog screeds and forum posts, if possible. After all, this is my first-ever negative experience with IBM products.
Has anybody gotten any satisfaction from Warranty Service using more congenial methods? And is there anything I can do right now, as I have publication deadlines to meet?
Apart from the boot failure, this laptop was in near-pristine condition when they received it and I need it back.
Four to five more business days, just to tell me whether or not they want to hear my side of the story, not even to do the repair? That's kind of insulting. Why did I pay for the Warranty?
This is definitely not the IBM experience I've known and loved for so many years, so if any of you have satisfactorily resolved your own in-warranty issues, please share your experiences.
Thank you in advance for insides you may have.
All best,
Amy

Contact has its own address fields...
You could also relate the contact to an account (or multiple accounts)
My previous reply is in reference to account duplication... contact duplication has its own user key (Last Name, First Name if my memory serves right).

• Submixing vs Folders how best to do this.....?

Hey everyone.
I bet some of you know a really good way to do this.
I just finished recording guitars for my band. We did several layers of guitars and for each take we had a 2 mic setup (front of cab and back)
I wanted to be able to blend the two mics so each is recorded onto a seperate track in Logic Express.
Now that all the recording is done and I've adjusted the mix of the 2 mics I want to deal with each take as a single track for the purpose of automation curves and stuff like that.
Is the best (and only) way to do this, to bounce mic 1 and 2 into a sinlge audio file and then just use that file?
Thanks in advance

Is the best (and only) way to do this, to bounce mic 1 and 2 into a sinlge audio
file and then just use that file?
Yes.That way you end up dealing with a combined mono audio file.
Otherwise you can keep them as two files, group the tracks they are on,to edit them and keep their volume relationship.

• 2 iPad users using one iTunes account.  how best to manage this?

My wife and I both have ipads, ipods, and iphones.  We want to use one iTunes account but it has proven to be very frustrating.  any advice?

as far as we can tell, iTunes has no concept that this is iPad1 and this is iPad2.  The only to manage sharing 80% same content but diferentiating on 20% is to manage EVERYTHING manually.  With lots of apps, movies, and 80GBs of songs, this is ridiculous.  We can't be the only couple who want one account but lots of different devices with different desired items on them.
Some syncs can't be done manually so we have to go back and delete or add after the fact. Giant waste of time.
iTunes on the iPad is a bit of a joke.  it doesn't seem to have any relationship to iTunes on our primary computer.  It doesn't actually function the same way (doesn't actually store downloaded items) which leads to iTunes confusion, frustration, and sometimes duplicate buying.
I'm thinking I'll just wait for the cloud service but given apple's record with iTunes, I'm a little doubtful about that.  Appreciate the response.
