Wre54g problems

I just purchased the wre54g and im trying to set it up and im having a few problems
I am trying to set up this device to amplify my University's wireless range so that i can use it in my room (which is still on campus)
I get connected to the wireless network and then i plug everything in and it does the site survey and every time it does the search and the bar goes to 90% and then it pops up "Site survey fail. Please try again."
Any idea why this is? Any help would be wonderful thank you.

To Configure your WRE with your University first thing which you need to make sure that the IP address of your University Network and the WRE IP address should be in the same range...
To know your University IP address.... Connect your computer to the University network... and Click on Start - RUN - CMD and click Ok... Now in the Command Prompt type "ipconfig" and hit enter... and note down the Default Gateway....While you configure your WRE make sure you change the LAN IP of WRE in the Range of your University Network...

  • WRT54G / WRE54G Problem with Security

    Greetings-
I check in the KB for a while and didn’t find a compatible subject.  If it has, apologies for the double post.
Prior to the change, I had two laptops connected to the WRT54G Router using WEP.  Everything worked fine.  We decided to turn a room upstairs into a small office and installed a desktop there.  The wireless range was poor so we bought a WRE54G Extender to help with the situation.
After a few failed attempts, I found and followed these detailed instructions posted here (thanks!) and got the desktop and my friend’s laptop, who helped me with the upgrade, connected to the router with a very strong signal from the new room.  We were able to use WEP and we used the same credentials we had with the existing configuration.
    http://forums.linksys.com/linksys/board/message?board.id=Range_Expanders&thread.id=692
When we tried to reconnect the two original laptops to the network, as much as we tried, we couldn’t.  Either laptop saw the router and the router reported being secured.  We could not authenticate with the same credentials we used for the desktop/friend’s laptop.
We had no choice but to disable security and in doing so all four devices were able to see and get out on the Internet.  As you can imagine, this is not something we want to leave permanently.
Would any of you have a suggestion as to how I can solve this issue?  Many thanks in advance
    Claude

    Try this -
Press and hold the reset button for 30 seconds...Release the reset button...Unplug the power cable from your Expander, wait for 30 seconds and re-connect the power cable...
    1. Connect your Expander to a computer, click on the Start button >>> Settings >>> Control Panel >>> Network Connections - Right click on the icon for Local area connection and go to properties- On the 'General' tab select 'Internet Protocol TCP/IP' and click on the Properties button- Select 'Use the following IP address'- Provide IP Address - 192.168.1.5, Subnet Mask - 255.255.255.0...Click on Ok button to Save and Click on "Close" on main Properties window...
    2. Now open an Internet Explorer browser page on your wired computer(desktop). In the address bar type - 192.168.1.240.
Leave the Username blank & in Password use admin in lower case...It should open your Expander set-up...
    3. Once you get to the set-up page you can follow this link to change the Expander Settings...
    4. While changing the Expander settings you have to make sure that the Wireless Settings(SSID/Network Name and WEP/WPA Key) are identical on both the devices(Router and Expander)...Also make sure to change the Expander's default IP to match your network and Gateway Address should be your Router's address...ex. Expander's IP Address : 192.168.1.240(assuming your router's default IP Address is 192.168.1.1), Subnet Mask : 255.255.255.0, Default Gateway : 192.168.1.1...
    5. After configuring the Expander you should disconnect it from the Computer and go into Local Area Connection TCP/IP Properties and set it back to Obtain IP Address Automatically...Disconnect the Expander from the computer and power cycle both the devices(Expander and Router)...Your Expander should be configured...
In case if you don't get the Expander set-up just leave it connected to your computer and reset it for 30 seconds and follow Step 2, Step 3, Step 4 & Step 5...
    Hope this helps.

  • WRE54G wireless extender problem with WRT600N wireless router

My Vista laptops work fine with the WRT600N router but not with the WRE54G extender. On the other hand my XP laptop works fine with the wireless extender so I know that both router and extender are working. Linksys tech support told me that the WRE54G is not compatible with the WRT600N, which is simply not true. With my XP laptop the signal goes from poor (5-10 Mbps) without the extender to excellent (54 Mbps) with the extender. Also, the lower blue light on the extender blinks indicating data transmission. I can access the setup page of the extender only with the XP laptop and wired desktop computers but not the Vista laptops. I suspect there is a Vista network setting that is the problem. I've turned off the firewall but to no avail. I've also switched between mixed mode and G-only, which made no difference. Anybody have any suggestions?

I have a secure wireless network (WPA). Perhaps my 4-5 year old XP laptop is the only laptop on the planet that works with the WRE54G-WRT600N combination. But I can assure all the doubters that this laptop categorically works flawlessly when I would otherwise be out of range without an extender. Good luck to spalaw. Please let me know if you are get your WRT160n to work with the WRE54G, especially you're able to connect with a Vista laptop.
    Hi
I am Afraid and wont be surprised if ya all people are nt able to use a N series Router with a G series Range Expander !
the Reasons is simple - N series is not BackWard Compatible as u check out the sources around. (Back Ward Compatible means compatible with the previous versions for its wireless Band , e:g - G band and B band.)
as far as my experience is concerned regarding the Range Expanders , me and my bud wasted a whole Week Configuring a WRT350N and WRE54G v3 , and it worked somehow on the seventh day  for an hour and Lost the connection again! Dayumm !
and we tried setting up with the same expander with WRT54GS v7.2 , it worked like a charm.
Conclusion : " WRE54G is a g series 2.4 Ghz expander which will work fine with all g series router though may not work with N Serious routers."
and if you really wish to Use something which can actually Extend the range for ur N routers signals , Better go for WAP4400N !!!!!!
And if someone still wish to run around , wanna try some tweaks (which i dont preferr )!
for WRT600N , just enable 2.4ghz band . as Range expander doesnt support 5 Mhz.
Use Only standard Channels . e.g : 1,9,3,11 .(No Wide and stuff.)
Try using WEP encryption first . (cause thats how we made WRT350N worked for a while. sighs)
At last , Wish u Luck.

    Hi ...
Try reseting the device and reconfiguring it. To reset the device, press and hold down the reset button on the exapnder for 30 seconds........still pressing the reset button unplug the power to the device wait for 15 seconds....Reset button should still be pressed ........replug the power back to the device and after 15 seconds release the reset button.
connect the expander to the computer directly using an ethernet cable....assign static IP address to the computer ..i.e. IP address 192.168.1.10 SM 255.255.255.0 DG 192.168.1.240....Leave the username field blank and in the password type admin...this will lead you to the configuration page of the expander.
Make the wireless setting identical to the gateway. Save the settings. Unplug the power to the gateway and also to the expander. Wait for 30 seconds and then connect the power back to the gateway first.....when  the gateway is completely booted UP .......connect the power to the expander.......
                       Check whether it works.

  • Problems with the Linksys WRE54G

    Hello,
after hours of trying to get the WRE54G working, there is still no result.
    The situation is as following:
    - the router is a Speedtouch 716
    - I have disabled the WEP security
    - I have used the autoconfig on the range expander
    - I have changed some settings in the webbased UI: picture
x the SSID is the same as the SSID of the router
x the channel is the same as the channel of the router (however "USA" is mentioned but I live in Europe)
x the default IP is 192.168.1.240 but I have changed this to 192.168.1.60
            x  the gateway is changed
    - WDS is enabled in my router
    - two blue lights can be seen on the RE
    - I can make a connection to the RE, so I can open the webbased UI
    - but it is impossible to use the internet via the RE
    Anyone who knows a solution?
    Many thanks!

    i think i have a similar problem!!
I live in an apartment two floors and have a WRT300N router and my internet signal is weak on the second floor but it works. I called Linksys tech support who guided me to buy the WRE54G to extend the signal. I bought and with great difficulty managed to install. Actually the second floor the signal was very good, but the internet on the main computer (connected to the router by wire) does not work, all other computers work perfectly and with good internet signal. The computer works normally with WRE54G off, I think it must be some conflict with the configuration of the WRE54G, but already several times called for support from linksys in Brazil and nobody knows how to solve the problem, always put them in the problem computer and it works normally just unplug the WRE54G.
    WRE54G unwieldy since the installation
    Please someone help me!!

  • WRE54G just creating more problems

I have a WRT54GS router in my home and I often use my Toshiba laptop in a room about 5 walls away. With just the router I get a "very low" signal and it tends to drop out a lot.
To remedy this problem someone suggested I get a range expander. So I did. And after spending over 2 hours setting it up yesterday (there are at least 6 other wireless networks in range so the setup was very complicated - the extender kept logging on to other unsecured Linksys networks) it seemed to be working ok. But the bliss only lasted about one hour.
    Here's the problem:
When I turn on the laptop it tries to log on to the weak router signal instead of the extender signal. This is because it takes about 2 minutes before the extender signal is even found. When the extender is found the computer gets confused and starts to log in again - this time through the extender. But for some reason it has a VERY hard time getting a new IP address. Thus it takes almost 5 minutes before the network works again.
    Questions:
    1. Isn't the extender signal supposed to be there all the time? it seems like the signal only appears after a computer logs in to the network.
    2. why is my computer having such a hard time obtaining an IP address from the extender? All the settings are exactly the same on the router and the extender.
    3. am I crazy or is this thing just causing more problems?\

    *frustrated*

hi..first off, ensure that both , the wre54g and wrt54gs have the latest firmwares on them...
after upgrading the firmware , reset the router for 30 secs and reconfigure it....
change the ssid , channel 1 or 11, change the beacon interval - 50 , fragmentation threshold and RTS threshold - 2304 ...
if u have a wre54g v1 range expander , reset it for 20 secs and then press the autoconfig button on it..this should configure the range expander..
if u have a wre54g v2 , connect it to the computer.. assign an ip add on the comp
    192.168.1.10
    255.255.255.0
    192.168.1.240
and try accessing http://192.168.1.240 . Keep the username blank and password as "admin".. once u logon to the ui .. make sure that the wireless settings are same as that of the router..
remove the static ip from the computer...do a power cycle....
this should configure the range expander...
and place the range expander somewhere in the midway ...

  • WRE54G wireless range problems.

    God day, dear experienced user.
    Ok, here is my story:
I got two houses on my property, and house A got an AP modem called ZyXEL. Which is based on the standard 802.11G.
This Access Point is in House A.
I have moved some of my childrens to House B. And they want to have an Internet connection over there.
House B is pretty close house A. So  they get a weak signal strenght from our ZyXEL modem wireless AP. But they want to make it stronger.
We located a window in house B with 1, 2 "lines of strenght". However the other locations in House B the signal strenght is 0, 1 line.
We bought a Wireless - G Range Expander, model: WRE54G. Version 3 I believe. And we located it at the window with 2 signal strenght. Plugged in the power supply.
Then I tried to connect to it, it did not work.
Then I readed forums regarding other users with same situation, it looks like it was something with password encryption.
Then I entered the gateway of the main AP, which is 10.0.0.138. And I changed it from WPA PSK to "unsecured".
Then on House B where the Range Expander is located I clicked a button for auto configuration.
Well the situation is: The name of the range expander seem to have changed to the name of our Wireless AP ESSID. So I thought it worked, also, inside House B, we got like 4 to 5 lines of signal strenght. And thought Wohoo! Its working!
But then, we connect to it, and it seems we can not get an properly connection to the internet.
After some further investigations, we cant connect to the gateway either. Even thought it says we are connected.
    Here is my testing:
I connect to the network, which is usually 0, 1 line, but now 4, 5.
Then the "connecting" icon changes to the normal icon which at least usually represents "connection working".
    Then I enter command prompth.
I write IPCONFIG. And I find out that the gateway is 10.0.0.138, and that my IP is 10.0.0.4
BUT, then I write "PING 10.0.0.138".
    And I get NO response.
Note that I got my firewall disabled, the router's firewall is also disabled, and it is "unsecured" mode, it has no encryption or password requirements.
    What can the problem be?
    CD PROBLEM:
With the Range Expander, I got a CD, when I run the CD, I try to install it, and come to "Performing Site Survey" And then after reaching 100% it pops up an error message: Site Survey Failed. Please try again.
I apologize for my bad English.

By default IP Address of the WRE54G is 192.168.1.240.Change the IP Address of the WRE54G(Range Expander) in the Range of AP..i.e..10.0.0.240 and default gateway same as of the AP.

  • Version/Firmware problems WRE54G

I have just bought a WRE54G from Ebay and it doesn't have the version number on the back and I can't get the right firmware and it's a bit annoying!!
I guess it's an old one, it doesn't have ethernet connection.  I've read lots of the posts , and found them useful and think my problem may be old firmware, but I've downloaded firmware for 1 and 2 (3 seems the same as 2) but when I try to upgrade it says "wrong firmware".  Grrr!
I get the message can't connect to AP in repeater mode, which I see is a bit of a favourite!
Any help you can give will be greatly appreciated.

Done the same, Got 1 off e-bay, All it has is the model number on the back, No Version number. Now when i talk to it with the software its gives a v.104 May 06, 2004.  Can this unit with no version number on the back be firmware upgraded??

  • WRE54G v.3 & WRV200 Problems

I'll make this short and sweet. I have tried everything I can think of to get these two items working together. The only way they are happy with each other is when encryption is disabled, then there is no problems.
If I enable encryption in anyway ... after a short while the WRE54G will cease to work and respond to commands and will not relay traffic. I have not played with beacon intervals and group renewal times, it's a little bit outside of my knowledge area so any advice would be appreciated.
Has anyone else run in to this problem?
As a side note, I am running the latest firmware on both units and as I said, the problem only occurs when I enable encryption.
    Cheers,

WEP 64 & 128 and WPA Personal. All end the same result. The unit fails to respond. It will still show signal, but won't relay DHCP or any other traffic.
One thing I haven't done is set a static IP and connect to the WRE54G and try getting it's web interface. This would tell me if it is indeed crashed or able to respond?
Other posts suggests that my setup is correct, I have been trying to diagnose this for months with no success. I do have another WRE54G sitting here brand new; perhaps I should try that device as this one is defective? I'm really running short of options.
Thanks for the response, hopefully we'll find a solution
    Cheers,

  • WRE54G + WRT54G + Xbox 360 Problems

I recently plugged my WRE54g back in to try and improve the signal strength in my basement, where my xbox 360 is (router is on 2nd floor). Got the extender working, all blue lights, signal seems to be stronger. However, the xbox fails the xbox live and media tests at the IP category, so something is wrong in the IP address area. I have tried changing the router's IP to match the extender's, resulting in problems on every computer in the house, so i set it back to 192.168.1.1. Then, I tried setting the extender's IP to 192.168.1.2 (after very much difficulty, the extender setup page freezes and says it lost connection whenever I make a change, still having the problem), yet my xbox still fails the test even though the extender IP is within the range of the router. I have no idea what to try now, I have tried googling every possible combination of words to try and find help, and have gotten nowhere. So if anyone could help, please, please, do so!

"Nothing but red light of death on the extender. Is it supposed to have the same SSID, channel # and security code as the router?"
    answer: yes
heres something i found for you.I hear they haven't made any expanders for the N series yet. but follow this guide i found, and you might get it to work.
First of all the computer or laptop MUST be hardwired to the router.
Second, the WRE54G MUST also be hard wired to the router.
Then, reset the WRE54G by pressing the reset button for at least 30 seconds. (You probably get a blue and red steady light....that is fine). Hopefully, if all goes right, this will allow you to now communicate with the WRE54G. (Auto Configuration is not possible).
Now to test this: Go into your start menu and click on "Run" and type in the comannd "CMD"....This will give you a DOS prompt window. Now type in "Ping 192.168.1.240" (this is the preset IP Address of the WRE54G.) At this point you will get several lines of numbers and stuff...ignore everything except at the bottom where it say's "Packets: Sent = 4, Recieved = 4, Lost = 0 0% loss>. If this is the case then you are looking good!
Now, open a web browser and type in 192.168.1.240 and wait for the Linksys page to come up from your WRE54G.....when/if this does come up then you have won the battle!
Next, and this is also VERY IMPORTANT. In the configuration of your WRE54G the SSID MUST be the same as your router!!!! Otherwise they will not communicate with each other. Also the channels should be the same. Now click on "save setting", and it this time or shortly there after you should have 2 blue lights on your WRE54G. At this time you can unplug it and place it anywhere in your house!
Please note: at the time of all this configuration my security on my router was disabled and later also on my expander.

  • WRE54G configuration problem

I just bought a WRE54g v3 range expander. I am really having problems to make it work. As my ISP provides me with a wireless router with only one slot in the back, I have this connected to a WRT54G router which is the one I would like the range expander to work with. I therefore wired the expander to the router for configuration, but the LEDS don;t get blue, and moreover, I get conflicting IP address messages. Do i need to set up an static IP address for the PC? Is the problem somewhere else?
    thanks for any tip

connect the expander to the computer and assign a static ip address on the computer ( 192.168.1.10 )
access the expander using http://192.168.1.240 . "admin" is the default password...
once on the web interface..change the wireless settings as per the settings on the WRT54G...disconnect the WRE54G and remove the static ip add from the computer...
do a power cycle...also , make sure that you disable the wireless on the modem provide by the ISP....
place the WRE54G at a location where it will have good signal strength from the WRT54G and can therefore repeat the signals to a farther distance...

  • WRE54G and WAP54G DHCP Problem

    Hi,
    Please can someone help me.
    Current setup:-
Cisco ASA 5505 with DHCP Server enabled on the inside interface.
Linksys  WAP54G cabled directly into the above interface on the Cisco ASA.
Linksys WRE54G with a wireless connection to the above access point using the same SSID and Channel.
When connecting my laptop to the linksys access point, the laptop obtains an IP address allocated from the Cisco ASA and works perfectly.
When adding the WRE range extender into the mix and connecting my laptop via the extender the laptop fails to obtain an IP address. The extender is connecting to the AP ok, it has 2 blue lights and i get a strong signal.
I have carried out packet captures on both my laptop and the inside interface of the CISCO ASA. The capture on my laptop shows DHCP discovery packets leaving my wireless interface, however, i receive no acknowledgement. when i run the same capture on the Cisco ASA i see the discovery packet hit the interface and a subsequent dhcp offer packet leave the interface, however, the offer packet does not reach the laptop when connecting via the extender.
Can anyone kindly offer any advise that doesnt involve throwing the extender in the bin!!?
    Thanks

The WRE54G is connected after the WAP.
The router's IP is 10.10.10.254 and is configured to allocate DHCP addresses within this range.
The AP's management IP is 10.10.10.1 and the gateway is 10.10.10.254 (router address).
The Extender's management IP is 10.10.10.2 and the gateway is 10.10.10.254 (router address).
When connecting to the wireless network via the AP, it connects and receives an address.
When connecting to the wireless network via the extender, it connects but does not receive a DHCP address. Signal is strong and the extender shows both blue lights.

  • WRE54G Verison 1 setup problems and conflicts accessing Router

I have been working on trying to get this range expander to work in my network for two days now.  This forum has been very helpful, but I still can not get the device to work.  I created a static IP address on my PC and was able to access the unit and configure it with the same SSID and channel (6) as my router.  I have updated the firmware to the latest version.  I am running 128 bit WEP and have configured the router and the range expander to the same encryption code.  I have tried setting the IP address of the range expander to 192.168.1.240 and 192.168.1.140.  My router's IP Address is set to 192.168.1.1 and the IP address range for the router is set to 192.168.1.100 to 192.168.1.149.
However, each time I turn on both the router and the range expander, the wireless card on my PC stops working and I get the Limited or No Connection message.  What I am a doing wrong??? -  this has been much harder than it needs to be!
Message Edited by swisstpa on 02-10-200712:32 PM

After three days, I finally got this device working!
So no one else has to go through the problems I encountered, here are the specific things you must do to get this working.  Order of steps is VERY important!
TURN OFF ALL WEP SECURITY ON THE ROUTER BEFORE STARTING!  Security settings were a big source of my problems.  Security has to be turned on in a specific sequence.  More on that later!
Go to Linksys.com and get the latest firmware for the router and save it to the PC you are configuring the range expander from.
When you initially begin to set up the range expander, you must turn off your router.  The range expander will show up on your available wireless networks as Linksysxxxxx where the xxxxx is a random sequence of numbers and letters.
    Plug in the range expander
If you have version 1 of the range expander, you will not have the convenient Ethernet cable port  for initial configuration.  Everything will have to be done via wireless connections.
Set your wireless card to have a static IP address of 192.168.1.200 and set the default gateway to 192.168.1.240.  This can be done in Network Connections, Properties, TCP/IP properties.
Open your available networks and make sure you connect to the SSID of the range expander.
Once you are connected to the network of the range expander, open your browser and type 192.168.1.240.  The setup screen for the range expander should appear.
Leave the user name blank and enter "admin" for the password (Linksys default).
UPLOAD the latest firmware to the range expander FIRST!  I believe it was off of the help tab on the range expander setup screen.
Change the SSID to the same SSID used by your router.
Make sure that the communication channel on the router and the range expander are set to the same number.  I used channel 6.
MAKE SURE YOU HAVE ALL SECURITY DISABLED AT THIS POINT!
    Save your changes before exiting!
    Unplug the access point.
On your PC, delete any references to your network SSID from your preferred networks list.  If you were using WEP before, this can cause problems with your connection.  Go to Network Conncetions, select your Wireless card, then right click on properties, click on the Wireless Networks tab at the top of the screen and then clear any references to your SSID from the preferred networks list.
Change your wireless card back to the mode of obtaining an IP address automatically.  (Change back your TCP/IP settings on the preference for the wireless card.)
Plug in the router.  Wait 30 seconds and plug in the access point again.  You should have blue lights on the range expander and see the bottom light blinking.  You are communicating with the router!
View the available networks on your PC and connect to your SSID – make sure it connects in unsecured mode.
Test browsing to make sure your connection is working.
Since the router and the range expander both have the same SSID, you can now access either the router or the range expander setup screens from your browser. TO re-enable WEP you MUST ENABLE SECURITY ON THE RANGE EXPANDER FIRST AND THEN ENABLE SECURITY ON THE ROUTER!  THE ORDER THAT YOU TURN ON SECURITY IS VERY IMPORTANT!  In your browser type 192.168.1.240 and enter the setup for the range expander.  Enable WEP and enter your pass code to generate the setting key.  Save the changes.  Then unplug the range expander.
Enter 192.168.1.1 for your router and access the setup screen for the router.  Enable WEP and set the encryption key on the router to match the key on the range expander, save your changes!  MAKE SURE YOU WRITE DOWN THE HEXADECIMAL SECURITY CODE GENERATED BY THE SOFTWARE.  You will need it in step 26.
Turn off your router.  The range expander should also still be unplugged.
On your PC go to your network card preferences and remove any references to your SSID in the preferred networks listing again (see step 16).
    TURN ON THE ROUTER FIRST!
Wait 30 seconds then plug in the range expander.
On your PC view available wireless networks.  Select the SSID of your network.  The computer will ask you to enter the Hexadecimal security code twice.  Once you are done the PC should connect to the network and you should be up and running!  The PC will remember the hexadecimal code for the future.
    GOOD LUCK!

    3. Once you get to the set-up page you can follow this link to change the Expander Settings...
NOTE : The link also explains to check the Wireless Settings on your Router...
