WRE54G V1 firmware 1.06.05

If I will upgrade to this firmware the wre54g v1 will be able to work also with routers of third parts?
because with my actual firmware 1.05.08 , the wre54g doesn't work (I have configured it with manual settings)
sorry for the english
bye

Do you want to say third party router?
WRE54G range expander is compatible with wireless G routers.

  • WRT54g v7 and WRE54G v1 cannot connect

    Hi.
    I have a WRT54g v7 (firmware 7.0.0.4) and WRE54G v1 (firmware 1.0.5.17).
The range expander won't connect to the router even with standard settings and no security. The lights on the range expander are blue, but no connection to the router.
Is this a firmware problem? The range expander did work with an older version of WRT54g.
    Regards,
    Hemmingsen

    Hi,
Of course I had cloned my MAC address before trying.
However it turned out that v7 does not support CHAP, so there was no way for me to connect.
Earlier linux versions do have CHAP, so I went to the store and replaced mine with a GL.
Shame on Linksys for "downgrading" the features from v4 to v7, and also for claiming that v7 supports PPPoE. No self-respected ISP would use PPPoE without some form on password encryption (most often CHAP or MSCHAPv2, as it is in my case, at least here in Bulgaria).
If GL goes out of the stores (looks like will happen and Linksys does not upgrade the functionalities, I'd advide to buy something else, if your ISP uses PPPoE.

  • WRE54G starts to annoy me bigtime...

    Hello,
I currently own a WRE54G v.3 EU, but it just won't work. These are the things I found out:
I can only access the configuration of the WRE54G if I hardware it to a computer. If I want to access it wirelessly, it shows 'page cannot be displayed'.
When I try to connect the wireless network the WRE54G provides, it keeps being stuck on 'identifying' (Vista Home Basic SP1), so it's pretty much useless.
I have a homeplug netwerk with a wireless network device (devolo dlan 200AV wireless G), whose signal I sound like to enhance using this device. I gave the wireless G a static IP (it's the gateway, ofcourse), which is 192.168.1.10. Subnet is 255.255.255.0. Securities match (WPA2 with password on wireless G, WPA with same password on WRE54G). Firmware is 3.04.1, but I have the same problems on 3.03.1.
What to do? I'm so close to returning this device for the 3rd time (yes, I had three other WRE54G's before), and just let it be and find another solution...
Oh, before you start insinuating this problem lies by the devolo device: it doesn't, since I have the same problems with my router, on which it used to work too.
    hanks in advance,
    Zinu.

Sorry but not clear on a couple of things. Is the "devolo" your router or access point? You said that you have had three WREs prior. Did any of them work? One major problem is in your security settings, where the "devolo" is WPA2 and the WRE is WAP. The WRE won't connect to your network and work with WPA2. WAP and WAP2 are two different protocols. So, if you can run WPA on the "devolo" you will have a better chance at success.

Is it necessary to be connected to wireless router/access point to upgrade firmware of WRE54G V1.0 in order to support universal repeater mode ??? Please let me know with full details what should I do in order to upgrade the firmware but without stay connected (in range) of a signal of a wireless router ot an access point. Thanks.

    Hey mike,
the static IP of 192.168.1.5 has to be assigned to one of the wireless PC's that you have....make sure that you assign the static IP to the "wireless network connection" . once you have done so....check if you are able to see the SSID of the WER54G..connect to that SSID...and then try to ping 192.168.1.240 from the command prompt...if you get replies...then try to upgrade the firmware.
Can someone walk me through the steps of assigning the static IP to the "wireless network connection" referred to in the last post? I would assume you would right click on My Network Places, then right click on the "wireless network connection", but give me the steps after that. I don't want to screw anything up. Also, is it necessary to turn the router off, or can I just temporarily disable the connection on my laptop?

  • Version/Firmware problems WRE54G

I have just bought a WRE54G from Ebay and it doesn't have the version number on the back and I can't get the right firmware and it's a bit annoying!!
I guess it's an old one, it doesn't have ethernet connection.  I've read lots of the posts , and found them useful and think my problem may be old firmware, but I've downloaded firmware for 1 and 2 (3 seems the same as 2) but when I try to upgrade it says "wrong firmware".  Grrr!
I get the message can't connect to AP in repeater mode, which I see is a bit of a favourite!
Any help you can give will be greatly appreciated.

Done the same, Got 1 off e-bay, All it has is the model number on the back, No Version number. Now when i talk to it with the software its gives a v.104 May 06, 2004.  Can this unit with no version number on the back be firmware upgraded??

Nebhor wanted to used them on his network correct router also no good. Talked to Tech for 3.5 hrs trying to get them to work but no luck. I have had these for 1.6 years,  tech support said to up date the FW but when I try any of the ver 1-3 it say's wrog firm ware ver 2 & 3 are the same file.
    Any thoughs?

Try upgrading firmware using TFTP applications…go to ftp://ftp.linksys.com/pub/network/ and save tftp.exe file on computer and try upgrading firmware on WRE54G…check whether it works or not and let me know…

  • Can't get 1.06.05 firmware to work with WRE54G v1

Tried everything twice...same result... steady red light on hardware and when I direct IP link to it....the Access Point MAC Adress description and field is missing and instead there is a line:
    link status .....
reverted back to 1.04.17 and hardware instantly went back to all blues and works fine.....
Why can't I get to the new firmware level???????  Would appreciate any help...
    Stiletto2

    Hey Stilleto,
The latest firmware does not require you to specify the mac address of the main AP anymore, but it does require you to assign the exact same wireless settings as the ones that you have on the AP.
On the previous firmware, it was possible for you to have a different ssid on the WRE. With the latest, the ssids should be the same

  • Intermittent network performance with WRE54G on Vista, and no Xbox 360 connectivity

I bought a WRE54G this week to help with some network dead spots in my home after moving house.
So far I've only had no real success - configuration seemed to take a while to work through (by the time I got the WPA PSK worked out) but now I at least have 2 blue lights on the device all the time.
On my Windows Vista Business laptop (Toshiba Tecra M400 with latest drivers) in my office (a deadspot) I can connect to the network and WirelessMon reports consistent signal strength of 60% with occasional drops to 40%. However although the connection seems to remain constant, connectivity is not. I seem to suffer severe degredation of network connectivity - streamed video will not buffer correctly and times out; connections to my corporate Exchange server are not retained. My guess is that the laptop is doing something like switching between the router WiFi network and the WRE54G network, although i I switch off the WRE54G I lose all network connectivity to my latptop in my office.
On my xbox 360 (using the Microsoft XBox 360 wireless network adaptor) I am also having problems. Once or twice I have successfully been given an IP address and then failed to get DNS servers. This evening I don't even get an IP address.
I'm stuck - I've tried a LOT of things and not achieved any luck. Can anyone suggest anything, or do I have a faulty range expander.
    Details below....
My ADSL router is an SMCWBRA79042 which does support WDS. All the devices in my house worked correctly with this router in my old house before introducing the WRE54G.
I use WPA PSK, TKIP. However I've also tried to get things working without any security at all, and then adding in security functionality afterwards.
I have already upgraded the firmware on my WRE54G to the latest version on the linksys web site.
I have tried using different channels. Initially I was on 8 (it was a free channel in my neighbourhood) but also have tried 11 and am now on 6.
I have tried changing the beacon to 50 and reducing the RTS and fragmentation thresholds to 2250.

    Hi
Have u checked the compatibility of manufacturer's of these two devices i.e ADSL Router & Range Expander ( IMP * version No of WRE54G ) .
    Cheers. !

The original text (with carriage returns) is shown below --->:
Before you access the Range Expander's web page, you need to gather some information (that you'll need once you do access the WRE54G web page).
    You need:
    1) The "IP Address" (of your Router/Wireless Access Point as seen by your local network). This will be something like "192.168.1.254" (depending on your local network's range of IP addresses).
    2) The "Sub-net Mask" (for your Router/Wireless Access Point as seen by your local network). Usually, this will be "255.255.255.0" (or "255.255.255.255").
    3) The (Default) "Gateway" Address (for your Router/Wireless Access Point as seen by you local network). This will usually be the "first" IP address in your network's range of IP addresses. For our example network above having a range of IP addresses of 192.168.1.1 through 192.168.1.255, the first IP address is "192.168.1.1" and so the "Gateway" Address will probably be "192.168.1.1".
    4) The "SSID" (Site Survey ID) of your network. This is the network name of your local network (i.e. the one you originally logged onto the network if you've already connected your computer wirelessly up with the router/wireless Access Point).
    5) The "Channel" your Wireless Access Point is using (from "1" through "11". A typical "Channel" used is "6".
    6) Wireless Network Encryption - you need to know if you are using encryption on your wireless network. You'll most likely either not be using it or your will be using either 40-bit (really 64-bit) WEP (Wired Equivalent Privacy) encryption, 128-bit WEP encryption, or the newer standard WPA-PSK (Wi-Fi Protected Access Pre-Shared Key) security settings. When you get to the WRE54G web-based configuration page, you will need to "enable" Security Settings (if yoiur using it) and then, in the next web config page that appears, enter WEP encryption key or enter the WPA-PSK pre-shared key used that is currently used for your local wireless network.
NOTE: In the WRE54G web configuration page, if you are using encryption, BEFORE you enter the info (into the web-page configuration fields) noted in Item 1 through 5 above, you will want to click the "enable" button for "Wirelss Security", then click on the "Edit Security Settings" button, enter your encryption key on the next web page that appears, and then click on the "Save" button at the bottom of the web-page. The WRE54G will save your security setting to its Flash memory and then re-boot itself. You may want to unplug/replug the AC power to the WRE54G at this time and then re-log in to the WRE54G at its IP address of 192.168.1.240 (which I will explain how to do below).
Before accessing the WRE54G web-based configuration page by pointing your web browser to "192.168.1.240", do the following:
    A. Connect the Ethernet cable that came with the WRE54G Ver.3 to the WRE54G (lift the small lid on the top of the WRE54G and plug the Ethernet CAT-5 cable into the RJ-45 jack there). Then plug the other end of the Ethernet cable into your computers RJ-45 jack (I assume your computer has one, right?).
    B. Change your computer's IP Address to use a "Manual" IP address rather than "DHCP". Then enter the following "static" IP address: "192.168.1.50". This is an good example address, but other addresses in the range of "192.161.1.XXX" where X is 1 to 255 will work (except I would not use 192.168.1.1, 192.168.1.240, or 192.168.1.255).
    C. Plug the WRE54G into the AC power. (check the lights on the WRE54G to make sure they are correct - the WRE54G startup documentation talks about this or I can give details later).
    D. Boot up your computer (make sure the network setting still show "manual" IP address and a static IP address of "192.168.1.50".
    E. Bring up your web browser and enter into the address field the WRE54G's IP address of "192.168.1.240".
    F. In less than a minute, the web-based configuration page should appear. Proceed cautiously to enter the configuration values as I've noted above in Steps 1 - 6. After clicking on the "Save" button at the bottom of the WRE54G's web pages, the WRE54G will always do a "reboot". I suggest unplugging and replugging the WRE54G into the AC after each reboot (just to make sure a cold reboot actually happens).
NOTE: I would also suggest that you enter the "IP Address" of the Wireless Access Point (see Step 1 above) LAST after entering and saving all the other WRE54G configuration values. That way, you will still be able to log onto the WRE54G at the default IP Address of "192.168.1.240" and make sure all the values are saved correctly (in case you make a mistake and enter the wrong IP Address for the Wireless Access Point). Note that each time you reboot the WRE54G and log into it with your web browser, you will want to "Refresh" the web-page screen when you go to "192.168.1.240" so you can see the updated page contents. If you screw up the configuration, you can always use the "reset" button (you need to use a paper clip to push it) on the side of the WRE54G to reset the WRE54G back to its default values. Then you can start over from the beginning.
My experience has been that if you have correctly configured the WRE54G and it works on your wireless network, you will be able to unhook the "hard-wired" Ethernet cable (from between the WRE54G and your computer) and still be able to wirelessly access the WRE45G at its IP address of "192.168.1.240" using your web browser
If you want, you can change the WRE54G's Password (or Username and Password) to values only you know so no one will be able to get into your WRE54G and change your settings maliciously or inadvertantly. Let me know if the above helps you or just confuses you.

    Hi AngryDrake,
    Thanks for providing that information.
Are you working from Parallels, Fusion or from some sort a VPN environment?
If you are using the printer in a virtual environment, then please try accessing the printer's EWS in a regular environment just to see if you have the same results.
Use Safari when accessing the printer's EWS, other browsers sometimes won't allow it to open.
Since the printer is setup on the network and you are able to print, you just can't access the printer's  EWS, I would  update the firmware on the printer which should allow you then to access the printer's  EWS through a regular environment. HP LaserJet Pro M1212nf Multifunction Printer Drivers.
Select your operating system, click next, click the link for firmware.
If you are still having issue, then make sure the printer is connected directly to the Router or Airport and not a switch.
Please let me know the results.
    Thank You.

  • Why is WAP54G RPT MODE better than WRE54G?

    Hello,
I have a project to expand a wireless network to another building with two floors.  The proximity is close (literally only 15 feet between the walls), but only clients with great antennas/wifi cards would be able to reach the router in the main building, so I want to expand the wireless signal into the new building.  The new building is two floors high, has no dropped ceiling or other ceiling/wall access, there is no conduit available between buildings, and no feasible way to run a wire, so my only real choice is to expand the signal coverage from the main building to the new building via wifi.  I have read many posts on many different forums covering this topic.  I understand that having multiple WRE54G repeaters has created reliability issues for some people.  Too bad, because these are nice, discrete little units and would be ideal for what I need to do.  I have seen several people recommend WAP54G units in repeater mode (no hardwired connection to the main router) in place of WRE54G units.  What is the difference?  Are they technically doing the same thing, and do you lose bandwidth by half with either unit?  Is it just that the WAP54G has been more reliable?  Not that bandwidth is my most important concern, reliability is my main concern, but I do have to deal with the issue of mounting these high on interior walls.  Does the WRE54G v3 exhibit the same problematic issues that previous versions 1 and 2 did?  I have a WRE54G v3 that I installed, and upgraded the firmware.  I have to admit, setting it up with a WRT54G was problematic, but once it was set up, it hasn't lost its link since (just going on one week now).  I do not have WEP enabled yet, I'm just using MAC address filtering from the WRT54G.  My proposed configuration is:
WAP54G in main building, just inside the outer wall.
WRE54G in the 2nd building on the first floor.
WRE54G in the 2nd building on the second floor.
Both WRE54G devices would directly connect to the WAP54G, one would not connect through another.  Does anyone see any potential problems?  Also, we have an extra WRT300N that was donated that we were just going to use as a WAP by deconflicting the IP with the router and turning off DHCP.  Any problems using the WRE54G with the WRT300N?
Thanks in advance to all that reply for your experience and insight.

Thanks again for your response.  It is not practical to run an Ethernet cable from building one to building two, that's why I'm finding this to be a little extra complicated.  The conduit situation is a total mess and they left no pull-throughs.  Outdoor routing is not an option either.  Thanks for your comment on the umbrella coverage characteristic, I had not heard that before but that will definitely be taken into consideration with our placement of the client-specific WAP.  It's not a simple two-story building - the first floor is longer than the second floor, and the extra large space on the first floor is at one end and is where most of the WAP clients will be located.  We'll be doing a lot of testing.
After performing more exhaustive research on these devices, I have decided to use the entry-level small business line - like a WAP54GP - because I need to have reliable wireless bridging between buildings one and two.  However, everything I've read about units in this category shows that the N+gr model WG 102 has the same capabilities and performs noticeably better, especially at extended range.  It's just a little more difficult to configure, but most people are very impressed with it.  I purchased a WAP54GP anyway for testing purposes and will be able to compare the two in actual use.

  • WRE54G doesn't work

Can't get my new WRE54G to work with my WRT54G router. Both items are brand new, so I assume they are the latest versions/firmware. Router works fine. I've set up the expander according to all instructions, using a wired connection to router for setup, using same SSID as router, and identical subnet mask and gateway IP. Expander shows 2 blue lights and when I run cmd "ping 192.168.1.240" I get 4 replies, no problem. But the danged thing has zero effect on my wireless signal strength, and the "activity" light doesn't flash when accessing Internet wirelessly. I can only conclude that it's doing absolutely nothing. I called tech support to ask how to tell if I'm getting any signal from the expander (vs. the router) and the guy said no way to tell because both devices must have same SSID. How do I get this infernal device to work? I've reset and re-configged until I'm hypoxic. (PS-WEP is disabled). (PPS--the ping operation I mentioned above was done from my desktop PC which is connected via Ethernet to the router. I'm using my wireless Mac laptop to check signal strength, but don't know how to ping from the Mac.) PPPS--After further reading, I see others have had trouble connecting via Mac. Perhaps WRE54G is in fact working, but not communicating with the Mac. Suggestions? Message Edited by jesmed on 05-02-2008 05:30 PM Message Edited by jesmed on 05-02-2008 06:13 PM

That kinda sucks. You might consider getting a wireless USB adapter for the PC tethered to your router. Then you could position the RE so that it would service the desktop. Then place your router closer to the iBook and operate wirelessly. I've seen Apple posts before but don't remember if they got them working or not. Good Luck.
Oh, reading closer, why can't you connect the iBook wirelessly with the static IP? Also, who said that the RE doesn't do DHCP? That's what it is doing on the PC side. The RE just repeats the router signal.

  • WRE54G v1 will not configure

After trying all sorts of thing to get my 54G v1 RE configured, I came to this site. After going thru alot of ??'s, I found that I had tried them all except pushing the RESET and AUTO CONFIG at the same time, so tried that. It not only RESET the normal settings, it also CHANGED the MAC address. The orig MAC was 00-12-17-7b-be-f7, now it's 00-90-4c-60-04-00, how is this possible? I have tried to configure this v1 RE with the v1 software and I have never gotten past the SEARCH for a RE, it has never found it. I already have a v2 in use, (I'm trying to chain them) and if I use the v2 software, I can get all the way thru to the CONGRATS screen. Even tho' I get thru the set-up and the lights work like they should, I can not get past the v1 RE. I have tried to configure it to the router and also to the v2 RE, both come out the same. I have tried to configure to an unencrypted router, same results. I have also tried to go thru the web based set-up, but as I have never been able to ping the v1 RE, I can not use the web based. I have tried to leave the IP/SUBNET/GATEWAY address's in the default (reset) #'s and also trying #'s to correlate with my other RE and router, no difference. I think that covers everything, anybody have ideas? I wasn't confused until the MAC address got changed, now I don't know what to think. THANKS FOR YOUR TIME.

OK, I'm not sure if I missed understood previous instructions or what, but I now have this REv1 working. I tried doing what I do for my REv2 but over the wireless card and couldn't get the REv1 working correctly. I tried configuring it to the encrypted router that I'm on and also to the REv2 that I am using. I tried configuring it to a different router that wasn't encrypted, but still couldn't get on-line. I WAS able to get thru the set-up Wizard only once after doing a "factory" reset, and that with my v2 software. If I used the v1 software or tried to configure the REv1 with the v2 software without re-setting, the software NEVER found a WRE54G to configure. When I was able to get thru a config, the lights would work correctly, a blinking blue light for activity and a red for no signal, etc, but was never able to get anywhere. I was NEVER able to get to the web-based set-up page even trying the /backdoor.asp, it would never ping and the arp -a log would be all wrong, (the router MAC was all 0's). Since I had always figured it should be configured into/with the other RE and router, I kept trying to go that route. Well this is what I finally did to get the REv1 working. I set-up the equipment like this; router---->REv2------>me------->REv1 I left my wireless card's IP/SUBNET/Gateway etc address's as they are for normal use thru the REv2/router. *I did a "factory" reset on the REv1 *I started the v2 software and did the normal steps, *confirmed my wireless connection/address, ( NORMAL configuration) *entered my WEP 128bit password *when the REv1 was found, clicked yes *entered (admin) on the PASSWORD screen here is where things are different from a normal configuration *I set the IP address for the REv1 from 192.168.1.240 to 1 number less then the IP address of the REv2, (in my case it was 192.168.5.97). *I then set the GATEWAY from 192.168.1.1 to the REv2 IP address (192.168.5.98). I'm not positive on this order but, *When the screen came up that asked for the MAC address of the AP, (v1 only), I entered the MAC for the REv2. (this screen didn't always come up, but I entered that address every time). *finished running the set-up Wizard. I wasn't too hopeful after all the tries that I had done, but to my surprise, I was finally able to get on-line, ping the REv1, get to the web-based page and have the REv1 show up in the arp -a log. I had never tried to change the GATEWAY address to anything but the router's IP address and even tried leaving it at 192.168.1.1, but then it struck me that if I give the REv1 the MAC address for the REv2, I should set the GATEWAY to the REv2 IP address. So, I believe the main problem I had was the setting of the GATEWAY in the REv1 set-up. Even tho' I tried the auto-config to a "open" router, I just was not able to get "inside"/thru the REv1 until I set the GATEWAY to the REv2's IP address. this is my final set-up/use router------>REv2------>REv1------>me I still don't know why configuring it to a unencrypted router either with the AUTO CONFIG, the set-up WIZARD or why I couldn't access it through the web based even after running the v2 software Wizard with the "open" router, all I know is that what I did above worked, not only once, but twice (I did a Firmware update after the first and had to do it for a second time). Maybe this will help others kenya61

  • WRE54G: Seeing double?

Quick background: my network is one tethered Win2K PC, one wireless WinXP Pro PC, and one desktop Mac. Had some problems with my old B + Booster setup and replaced both today.
I set up a WRT54G router -- with WEP -- and a WRE54G range-extender. I used the auto-config button, as per the enclosed instructions. The range-extender is now in place, and although MacStumbler tells me I've got two networks with the same SSID, it only says one of them is secured. When I told the Mac to join, I entered the hex key and it worked just fine.
Then there's my WinXP Pro PC...
It's using a Linksys USB Wireless B adapter. Their config utility tells me that there are both the same two networks (one secure, one not) available, but won't let me change it from the one that my Mac sees. I can see that it's configured to the "unsecure" SSID, but can't change it.
Viewing available wireless networks within Windows shows me one with my SSID, unsecure, and my neighbors networks. I tried going into the Properties for my TCP/IP connection, under the wireless networks, and forcing it to use the WEP key. This worked for about 5 minutes, and now it's back to thinking it's joined the "unsecure" network but with no real connection.
Also, to add further insult, my PC's CD-drive isn't recognizing the installation disk that came with the range-extender, so I can't install the utilities. During the 5 minutes I had a valid connection I tried to download the software from Linksys, but can only find the firmware update.
So, I have a Mac that had no trouble figuring out which one to join, but my PC is seeing double half the time and not letting me set it correctly. I also can't seem to get the default IP for the extender to load; it keeps timing out in my browser.
What am I missing? I'd hate to unplug the extender, because at least my Mac is working.
    Thanks in advance...

Hi… The reason you are able to see two different networks see that you Range Expander is not connected to your wireless router. You need to ensure that both the router and RE is setup with exactly same wireless settings such as SSID and WEP. The shortcut to add WEP key to WRE is that turn off the router and assign a static IP to your PC on the wireless adapter. Connect to this WRE54G’s wireless network and access its setup page by its IP address. Add the WEP key to it and turn on the router. You may need to do a power cycle, you would be able to see only one wireless network and connect to it.
