WRE54G w/ Linksys BEFW11S4?

Hello -
I've spend the last three hours or so trying to setup my WRE54G range expander with my BEFW11S4 wireless router.  The router is 802.11b, but from the product literature, it seems that it should be compatible.  From looking through the forum I see that previous models came with an ethernet jack that could be used for configuration - that would have been really nice!  Here's a rundown thus far:
It took me a while to realize that the WRE54G is not compatible with WPA, so I switched my router back to WEP, rebooted it and connected to it successfully.  My wireless computer will now connect with my unboosted router now just fine - although as before the signal strength is quite low - hence my desire to get the range expander.  I also realized that my wireless router and my expander were on the same channel - 6 - and so I changed my access point to channel 1, figuring there might be some interference.  Is this correct?
I am using the configuration CD on my wireless computer.  It goes through the configuration process just fine for most of it.  It sees both the expander and my wireless router.  Sometimes it wants to default to the expander, sometimes to the wireless router.  As suggested by others on here, I select my wireless router, not the expander.  It then asks for my WEP password, which I give it.  Then it says  "Searching for an available WRE54G" at which point it tells me that it can't find one - which is odd because I usually have to show it my wireless router and NOT the WRE54G during the Step 2 "Current Wireless Network Settings" dialog.
I have, on occasion, been able to access the WRE54G by typing in http://192.168.1.240/ in IE and getting the config screen.  The problem is, I can't seem to stay connected to it long enough to save the settings.  I'd be happy to configure this thing manually if I could only keep the connection to the unit.  Sure would be nice to have that RJ-45 jack on there......
Any help you could offer would be much appreciated - thus far WRE54G Range Expander = Weekend Reducer.

My WRE54G appears to be V1, since there is no V on the model number on the bottom sticker.
I turned off security on my router and then cycled it, reset the WRE54G and then used the Auto Config button - both lights went blue and my wireless computer connected to it and accessed the net just fine.  However, whever I tried to re-implement security, I could no longer get it to work.  Also, when I cycled the power on the WRE like you suggested after using the Auto Config button, when it powered back on both lights were no longer blue and I had to reset the unit and then push the Auto Config button again.
I'm not really happy about the fact that I already had to downgrade my security from WPA to WEP, and I certainly have no interest in running my network completely unsecured.  From looking at the product reviews on Amazon, it looks like I'm not alone in not being able to get this unit to work with WEP.  I actually got this unit on loan from a friend who had it sitting around - I noticed it just a day after I ordered one.  I told him I would try his out until mine arrived.  If I can't get mine to work in 30 minutes or less once it shows up, I'm just going to return it and buy a router I can put in bridge mode.  I've wasted enought of my time on this thing already.

I am trying to figure out if I can use an Airport Express (the $99 dollar thing) with my wireless Linksys befw11s4 to stream music from itunes in my Windows XP Pro laptop. I cant seem to find a strait answer on the web. I am not sure if it is becuase the Linksys rounter is old or what. itunes, linksys, and xp are all so popular someone must have figured out how to do this. I spoke to someone at the apple store who said it could be done but he did not know how. I am looking for some relitivly clear instructions.
Maybe I am searching for the wrong thing terms but cant seem to figure out it it is possible and how to do it with this set up. I dont know why it is not as easy as conecting the linksys router to the airport router with a cat5 cable and then the airport router to my stero.
    Any help would be appreciated.

Do I need to log into my linksys router and do anything?
    No
2)It only allows computers with listed MAC addresses.
OK, you will need to make a change. The best solution is to disable this feature since it offers no real security. If you don't want to do that, you must add the MAC address of the wireless interface of the AX to that list.
3)does not broadcast its name (i thnk this is called SSID).
This doesn't have to change. However you should be aware that this offers no security. The SSID is still broadcast between the base station and any connected clients. Therefore it only takes a few seconds to find the SSID and access your network.
Sometimes this option does cause problems with wireless connections.
If you want to secure your network, forget about hiding the SSID and MAC address filtering. Use WPA2 or WPA with a non-dictionary password... if your wireless devices support it.

  • Linksys befw11s4 v4 password won't change

I cannot change the password on my linksys befw11s4 v4.  I go to the screen to change it, I type in the new password and reenter/confirm and select apply, then it tells me that changes are successful and it will reroute me back to the previous page in 5 seconds.  When it goes back to the previous page, the password hasn't changed and I haven't successfully secured the router.  It's still showing the router as unsecured.  Any suggestions?

Clear your browser's cache, turn off any software firewall and try again. You can also try doing it on a different computer.
The box said windows xp or better... So I installed Linux!

  • Linksys BEFW11S4 v4

    Hi,
I have a Linksys BEFW11S4 that works just fine, or so I think. Currently there are 2 desktops and a PS3 connected to the router via cat-5. One desktop has Win Vista/Win 7 (both 32-bit Home) installed and the other desktop has XP Home. I recently got a Dell N5010 laptop with Win 7 Home 64-bit installed on it. I'm trying to set up the wireless network so I can use the laptop upstairs, but after setting up WEP and WPA, I can either NOT connect to the internet on the laptop, or when I do connect, the desktop with the dual OSes gets kicked off the internet, then the laptop disconnects, and I have to reset the router in order to get online with the desktop. I've searched everywhere for a solution. Everything is set to obtain an IP automatically, I've tried doing manual configuration, I've made sure firmware for the router is up-to-date, all network adapters have the latest drivers, I can use the laptop when it's wired to the router. The laptop has an Intel WiFi Link 1000 BGN adapter installed. Drivers are the latest, status says it's working properly. Like I mentioned before, I can use the laptop and everything else wired to the router when security is disabled, but I, personally, do not want my network unsecure.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Yes, I am able to connect without any problems when the network is unsecure. Setting the security to WEP worked. The last time I tried that, it kept saying Limited Access, so that was probably user error and me not putting the code in correctly. Firmware version is 1.52.03. There aren't any other wireless devices on the network since the PS3 is connected to the internet via a cat-5 cable.
Is it safe to use WEP instead of WPA?

i have an existing wireless router in place at home and all of a sudden one of my laptops can't connect to my linksys befw11s4 router. I can connect my other laptops and desktop with no problems. I have disconnected it and reconnected with no success. Any ideas?

  • Linksys BEFW11S4 v2 with a NETGEAR RP614 v3

    I have a Linksys BEFW11S4 v2 with a NETGEAR RP614 v3.
My setup is my Cable modem, into my NETGEAR RP614 v3, and everything works perfectly fine. I got a Linksys BEFW11S4 v2 and updated its firmware from the linksys server.
    Now,
I'm hooking the Linksys into the NETGEAR router (ethernet) and using the Linksys wireless to connect my laptop to the entire network.
(My PC desktop is running XP Home and my Laptop is running Windows Vista Home Premium)
My laptop can go online perfectly fine wirelessly, and the signal and everything seems perfectly fine. My problem is however, my Laptop can't see the computers on the NETGEAR router. (The Linksys acquires the correct IP and Domain and everything from the NETGEAR however).
I've set the network discovery and all in Windows Vista to on, however it can't see the computers still. I've even disabled the Firewalls at one point on the desktops.
However, Itunes finds the SHARED music files and stuff from the NETGEAR computers. And when I ran Diablo2, with TCP/IP I could connect to a game hosted by a NETGEAR computer, yet when I hosted, they couldn't connect to me behind the Linksys.
Anyone think they can help ?
    Thank you for your time,
    Charles Louis

That's because they belong to different networks: I think it goes this way...
Netgear usually operates under the network IP of 192.168.0.x while Linksys operates under network IP of 192.168.1.x ......... now if you want to do file and printer sharing on all your PC's... have them belong to the same network by doing the ff:
► change IP of the BEFW11S4 to 192.168.0.x (preferrably 50)
► disable the Linksys DHCP server
► connect the Netgear to port 1 of the Linksys router
This would make in effect your BEFW11S4 just like a wireless switch.

  • SB6121 modem & Linksys BEFW11S4 router compatability?

I know it's an old router, but after upgrading my service to 30mbps, I only get about 5mbps even with the direct wired hookup from the router. I get ~25mbps with the router removed, so the modem is working OK. I checked for the firmware upgrade, and I already have the latest installed.
Since this router is a 10/100, I think I should do better, at least with the wired connection (I may have to put up with slower speeds on my wireless connection with the laptop). Is there something I can do to realize the potential of my new ISP account?

You're spending hundreds each year on internet service and now you have a fast service. I think you need a router with a big CPU.

  • Constant disconnects with Linksys BEFW11S4/Westell/Bellsouth Ultra DSL

I recently upgraded to the 6mb DSL service from Bellsouth.  Previously I had the 3mb.  Anyways everything was fine for sometime even with the faster service.  The last few weeks I have been having constant disconnects(several a day).  Naturally the wireless lite on my Linksys BEFW11S4 goes out each time.  I then un-power the router then re-power and I'm off and running again.  I am using a westell modem.  Bellsouth tells me that its not them since i do have an internet coneection and referred me to Linksys.  After several live chats(due to disconnects and then having to start tellin my issue all over again) they had me upgrade my firmware. Well did that and problem hasn't changed.  I've played with the different router channels and they don't seem to help as well.  Bellsouth told me that I had a static ip, so I tied setting up router that way, but then i got no connection.  Unil reently everything was fine, this just started!   Any help is greatly appreicated.  My 17 yr old daughter is going through internet withdraws upstairs!

If you are on DSL using a Westell Modem; make sure you ask your ISP to bridge the Modem first and use the PPPoE fucntion on your router. Change the LAN IP of the router to something else like 192.168.2.1 so it won't get a conflict with the IP of the Westell. Then if you are on cable, you can try adjusting the MTU size to 1492, 1400, 1300, or 576 then check which value would get your connection stable. You can reset your router right after you upgrade it also, then reconfigure it again. Hopefully yell be fine after that!

  • Linksys BEFW11S4 - dead?

Hello, I think my Linksys might be dead. One day i lost my internet connection so i restarted a router. After that Linksys does not react when i plug a cable to the WAN input or outputs. All i see is green Power LED and red Diag light. When I plug or unplug cables I see no reaction at all. When I type 192.168.1.1 I get an error 'Page not found'. I tried to ping it, but all attemps failed. I tried to reset it in many ways, but no success. Does it mean that my device is dead? Thanks

When the DIAG light on the router is lit, it could possibly mean that the firmware is corrupted. You can do this test to see if the router will still reply, that way you may proceed in performing a firmware upgrade afterwards.
    1. Disconnect the modem from the router.
    2. Connect a computer to an ethernet port of the router.
    3. Open the command prompt and type in ping 192.168.1.1
    4. While the router is powered on, press and hold the reset button for 30 seconds.
    5. Do not release the reset button, while still holding down the reset, unplug the power cord and leave it off for another 30 seconds.
    6. And still holding the reset button down, plug in the power cord for another 30 seconds.
    7. After the last 30 second reset, release the button and wait for the power light to go steady.
    8. During the reset process, check the command prompt and see if you got a reply. At any time that you see a response while pinging, release the reset button immediately and check if you can access the router interface.

  • Cascade Linksys BEFW11S4 wireless router to a Linksys EZSX16W switch....

I tried to cascade a wireless BEFW11S4 router to a EZSX16W switch but I can't get it to work. When I first connect it goes online for about 1 minute then after that nothing. I loose my internet wan connection. I connected the uplink on my router to the number 1 port on the switch. My modem connection is on the wan port on the router. Plugged everything in and it goes for about 1 minute then I loose connection. Anyone have any ideas on how I can get this working....THANKS

No you don't need to change any settings on your router. The First thing which you can check when you connect the Modem to the Linksys Router and then your Computers without using the Switch are you able to go Online and check if you are getting Disconnected or not.
Modem - Router - Computer ..... and check the Internet Connection.
If your Computers are able to go online, Then you need to connect the Ethernet cable from the LAN Port 1 of the Linksys Router to the LAN Port No.1 on the Switch, Then connect your Computer to the LAN Port 2 of the Switch.  Once you are done with these connections.. Then you need Unplug the Power from Switch, Router and Modem.. Wait for 30seconds and then first plug the power to the Modem... Wait till all the lights are Solid then plug the power to the Linksys Router and then to your Switch.
Now check if you are Online from the Computer connected to the Switch.

  • Linksys BEFW11S4(BEST FIRMWARE)

    Hi.
I want to know what is the best firmware for BEFW11S4.
    Thanks!

I would consider the latest to be the best since it would have fixed the issues experienced with the older firmwares. And it would depend on your hardware version. And please remember that not all firmwares will work with another hardware version. You can only use a certain firmware version with the correct hardware version.
