WRE54G WRT54GL IP Conflict

Network has a WRT54GL wireless router, WRE54G wireless range expander, a WMP54G PCI wireless desktop adapter and the occasional Dell and HP laptops.  All Linksys products have the current firmware versions.  DHCP is enabled.  I keep getting error messages about an IP conflict with another device on the system.  When I look at the event viewer I see that it is always the WRE54G that is in conflict, usually with the desktop.  I guess I don't understand TCP/IP well enough, but doesn't the WRE have a .240 address?  Why does it keep hopping on the same one (.101, .102, etc) as the desktop.  What can I do to fix this situation?  The error balloons are quite annoying and the users of this network (my bosses) don't really want to force a new IP each time it happens.  Please help!  Thanks!

I have a similar experiment going on, with an additional problem, AND another variable in the mix....
Here's my setup:
-in my square, I live in an apartment with DSL, and my WRT54GL...
(2 wired computers here, Win XP)
-halfway across the square, in my girlfriend's apartment, I setup a WRE54G repeater  (2 wireless computers here, Win XP)
-On the other end is my office, with a WET200 bridge
(here I have my office computer, with Win 2003 Server, "wired" to the WET200)
**This is all working "somewhat" ok for all the wired computers, and hit and miss for wireless.
1) I get the IP conflict as described in the thread above, on my office computer.  I have setup static DHCP for all the computers on the network, AND am sure no IP's are really in conflict.
This seems to result in my office computer having trouble reaching some services at times, such as my network printer (also static DHCP)
**even when I manually assign static IPs on my office computer and printer
2) When I try to use my new laptop wirless from home (near the WRT54GL), it always ends up hopping to the repeater, which is farther away, and weak signal, AND can't get a DHCP address.
**I would really like to have a proper resolution to this problem, so that I can design viable/reliable network solutions for my business clients.  Right now I avoid wireless solutions whenever possible, because they are almost always a headache in some  way...

  • WRE54G Verison 1 setup problems and conflicts accessing Router

I have been working on trying to get this range expander to work in my network for two days now.  This forum has been very helpful, but I still can not get the device to work.  I created a static IP address on my PC and was able to access the unit and configure it with the same SSID and channel (6) as my router.  I have updated the firmware to the latest version.  I am running 128 bit WEP and have configured the router and the range expander to the same encryption code.  I have tried setting the IP address of the range expander to 192.168.1.240 and 192.168.1.140.  My router's IP Address is set to 192.168.1.1 and the IP address range for the router is set to 192.168.1.100 to 192.168.1.149.
However, each time I turn on both the router and the range expander, the wireless card on my PC stops working and I get the Limited or No Connection message.  What I am a doing wrong??? -  this has been much harder than it needs to be!

After three days, I finally got this device working!
So no one else has to go through the problems I encountered, here are the specific things you must do to get this working.  Order of steps is VERY important!
TURN OFF ALL WEP SECURITY ON THE ROUTER BEFORE STARTING!  Security settings were a big source of my problems.  Security has to be turned on in a specific sequence.  More on that later!
Go to Linksys.com and get the latest firmware for the router and save it to the PC you are configuring the range expander from.
When you initially begin to set up the range expander, you must turn off your router.  The range expander will show up on your available wireless networks as Linksysxxxxx where the xxxxx is a random sequence of numbers and letters.
    Plug in the range expander
If you have version 1 of the range expander, you will not have the convenient Ethernet cable port  for initial configuration.  Everything will have to be done via wireless connections.
Set your wireless card to have a static IP address of 192.168.1.200 and set the default gateway to 192.168.1.240.  This can be done in Network Connections, Properties, TCP/IP properties.
Open your available networks and make sure you connect to the SSID of the range expander.
Once you are connected to the network of the range expander, open your browser and type 192.168.1.240.  The setup screen for the range expander should appear.
Leave the user name blank and enter "admin" for the password (Linksys default).
UPLOAD the latest firmware to the range expander FIRST!  I believe it was off of the help tab on the range expander setup screen.
Change the SSID to the same SSID used by your router.
Make sure that the communication channel on the router and the range expander are set to the same number.  I used channel 6.
MAKE SURE YOU HAVE ALL SECURITY DISABLED AT THIS POINT!
    Save your changes before exiting!
    Unplug the access point.
On your PC, delete any references to your network SSID from your preferred networks list.  If you were using WEP before, this can cause problems with your connection.  Go to Network Conncetions, select your Wireless card, then right click on properties, click on the Wireless Networks tab at the top of the screen and then clear any references to your SSID from the preferred networks list.
Change your wireless card back to the mode of obtaining an IP address automatically.  (Change back your TCP/IP settings on the preference for the wireless card.)
Plug in the router.  Wait 30 seconds and plug in the access point again.  You should have blue lights on the range expander and see the bottom light blinking.  You are communicating with the router!
View the available networks on your PC and connect to your SSID – make sure it connects in unsecured mode.
Test browsing to make sure your connection is working.
Since the router and the range expander both have the same SSID, you can now access either the router or the range expander setup screens from your browser. TO re-enable WEP you MUST ENABLE SECURITY ON THE RANGE EXPANDER FIRST AND THEN ENABLE SECURITY ON THE ROUTER!  THE ORDER THAT YOU TURN ON SECURITY IS VERY IMPORTANT!  In your browser type 192.168.1.240 and enter the setup for the range expander.  Enable WEP and enter your pass code to generate the setting key.  Save the changes.  Then unplug the range expander.
Enter 192.168.1.1 for your router and access the setup screen for the router.  Enable WEP and set the encryption key on the router to match the key on the range expander, save your changes!  MAKE SURE YOU WRITE DOWN THE HEXADECIMAL SECURITY CODE GENERATED BY THE SOFTWARE.  You will need it in step 26.
Turn off your router.  The range expander should also still be unplugged.
On your PC go to your network card preferences and remove any references to your SSID in the preferred networks listing again (see step 16).
    TURN ON THE ROUTER FIRST!
Wait 30 seconds then plug in the range expander.
On your PC view available wireless networks.  Select the SSID of your network.  The computer will ask you to enter the Hexadecimal security code twice.  Once you are done the PC should connect to the network and you should be up and running!  The PC will remember the hexadecimal code for the future.
    GOOD LUCK!

  • IP Address Conflict

I am using a linksys wrt54gs router, a wre54g range expander and a wusb200 wireless adapter, there is only one computer on the network and it's set to a static IP address.  Could someone please explain to me how I'm getting an IP address conflict with another system on the network?
    Please?
I've already been through linksys phone support.
    Twice.

Please list all the static LAN IP addresses that you are using on your network.  Also, if you are not using the default DHCP server range of 192.168.1.100  thru  192.168.1.149 , then please state your DHCP server range.
Is your WRE54G, using the default fixed LAN IP address of 192.168.1.240 ?
Assuming that your addresses are all correct, then the next most likely cause for your problem is that your computer is connecting both to your router, and to your WRE54G, and the WRE54G is in turn forwarding the connection to the router.   The router sees the direct connection and the connection through the WRE54G and interprets this as two connections with the same LAN IP address.
If this is the case, I would suggest that you try to eliminate the WRE54G.  It sounds like your wireless computer can connect directly to your router.  If you can connect, but not well, use the HGA7T high gain antennas on your WRT54GS, instead of the WRE54G.
A third way to get an address conflict is if your neighbor has set his computer to a fixed LAN IP address, and he is also connecting to your network.  In this case, secure your wireless network.

  • WRE54G Range extender not recognized on laptop running Vista

I have just set up a home wireless network using the WRT54GL and the WRE54G range extender. The main computer (WindowsXP) is wired and a desktop (also XP) is getting 100% signal through the WRE54G. A third computer (laptop running on Vista) works fine on wireless running off WRT54GL but is not recognizing the range extender and getting insufficient signal in other parts of the house including the room where the 2nd desktop is getting 100%. The WRE54G is not showing up on the network map of the laptop. Can anyone help me trouble shoot? I need step by step instructions - I don't know a lot of the internet/network lingo but am pretty computer literate. Thanks

If one computer is already working fine with the wireless range extender .... you need to check the wireless settings on the vista Laptop ....
Make sure that the adapter is workiong fine ....
Also try uninstalling & reinstalling the wireless adapter .....

  • Problems with the Linksys WRE54G

    Hello,
after hours of trying to get the WRE54G working, there is still no result.
    The situation is as following:
    - the router is a Speedtouch 716
    - I have disabled the WEP security
    - I have used the autoconfig on the range expander
    - I have changed some settings in the webbased UI: picture
x the SSID is the same as the SSID of the router
x the channel is the same as the channel of the router (however "USA" is mentioned but I live in Europe)
x the default IP is 192.168.1.240 but I have changed this to 192.168.1.60
            x  the gateway is changed
    - WDS is enabled in my router
    - two blue lights can be seen on the RE
    - I can make a connection to the RE, so I can open the webbased UI
    - but it is impossible to use the internet via the RE
    Anyone who knows a solution?
    Many thanks!

    i think i have a similar problem!!
I live in an apartment two floors and have a WRT300N router and my internet signal is weak on the second floor but it works. I called Linksys tech support who guided me to buy the WRE54G to extend the signal. I bought and with great difficulty managed to install. Actually the second floor the signal was very good, but the internet on the main computer (connected to the router by wire) does not work, all other computers work perfectly and with good internet signal. The computer works normally with WRE54G off, I think it must be some conflict with the configuration of the WRE54G, but already several times called for support from linksys in Brazil and nobody knows how to solve the problem, always put them in the problem computer and it works normally just unplug the WRE54G.
    WRE54G unwieldy since the installation
    Please someone help me!!

  • Unable to Connect WRE54G and WRT54G

So I've got a WRT54G Router and a WRE54G Range Expander. The router works fine on its own (Firmware 2.02.7) but when I try to get them working together, it just doesn't work. I tried the auto config on the Range Expander, but to no avail. I tried running the Setup Utility from the CD, and once I get past confirming my wireless settings it says that it can't find the Range Expander and to make sure that it's powered on (which it is). My computer IS getting a signal (an excellent one at that) from the range expander as "CNITS," but it doesn't have an internet connection from the router. What do I have to do to make this thing work?

Well, as you see from the threads on this board, this is a common problem. I experienced practically everything mentioned here, including the IP confict business but I consider myself "Luckydog" because I finally got it to work (after long hours). The settings on your router should be fine if everything was working pre-RE. The RE is just supposed to mimic them.  Unfortunately, there is no simple answer but trial and error. What I would recommend for you right now is reset the RE to default with the pinhole switch and configure the RE with the ethernet cable and IE interface. Don't try the autoconfig or the CD software. Also, power cycling the whole WIFI network system, PCs, router, RE,  printer servers, etc. does wonders. Bring the router up first as that should start assigning the IP addresses. I don't think the Window's warning is bogus, i.e. there has to be an IP conflict somewhere...
Oh, and forgot. Get ready for a hair transplant as you may end up pulling it all out by the time it is all over!
See below. I had a v1 so couldn't hard wire. Hard wire the RE to the computer instead of the router. Might be the IP conflict problem.
    From Castor post 05-29-07:
Logon to setup page of your wireless router, get the necessary wireless settings e.g. SSID, channel, wireless security mode and security code, reset the R.E. (Range Expander) back to factory default settings by pressing reset button, power down the R.E. and connect directly to the computer, power up the R.E. and assign a static IP on pc e.g.192.168.1.10 subnet mask 255.255.255.0 default gateway 192.168.1.1, open I.E. on computer and in the address bar type 192.168.1.240, it would ask for username and password, put “admin” as password without any username, put the wireless settings according to wireless router and save the settings…power cycle the n/w by unplugging power cable of router and R.E. power up the router first once your router is rebooted power up the R.E. check whether it works or not and let me know…

  • WRE54G Disconnects; Red Light Comes Back On Hours After Seeing 2 Blue Lights

Does anyone have a fix for this problem? My WRE54G shows 2 blue lights, works fine, but within a few hours it disconnects and one red light shows. This forces me to unplug and then plug back in the WRE54G, and reboot my computer.
What is causing this intermittant failure?  How do I eliminate this?
Message Edited by buntaro on 04-09-200710:34 PM

Since I did not have any responses to my query, I engaged a Linksys tech in an email chat session last Friday afternoon to have a go at the problem. Essentially he walked me through the usual diagnostics, device firmware version levels, etc., and I would be happy to send you a copy of that session if you think it would be of help to you (just agree to ignore my typo's!).
For reference, I am running the following configuration:
    - Two Dell PC's each running XP with all current patches applied.
    - Full Linksys wireless network with their WRT54GL, V1.1 router, the WRE54G range expander, a WPSM5G USB print server (connected to a Brother MFC 820CW printer), and an SB5120 Motorola cable modem.
    - All Linksys devices are at current firmware levels.
    - Secured network (WPA-Personal):
After the chat session, I made the following changes:
    - Re-installed the expander firmware...just in case (my idea).
    - Found my remote PC set to work on wireless "B" or "G" and changed it to match my router on "G" only (this was my error as I intended to run "G" only throughout).
    - Changed the router and expander from channel 6 to channel 11 (the tech recommended that I "try" channel 1 or 11).
So far (knock on wood), my expander has remained "on" (2 blue lights) even through a short commercial power failure this afternoon).
Hope this helps a bit...best of luck!

  • WRT54GL stops working until rebooted

I've been using my WRT54GL for years with no problems.  A few months ago, I began to see an intermittent problem, in which all devices connected to it (either wirelessly or wired) would suddenly lose access to the network.  Sometimes (but not always), one of the devices will also give a device-conflict message about there being another device using the same IP address.  In any case, the only thing that works at this point is to unplug the power from the router and restart it.
I've got the router set up for DHCP, and I do have a couple devices (a printer and a NAS) set up with static addresses outside the range of DHCP.
The only thing that I can think of that changed at the time this started happening, was that my wife installed the updates to her Macbook's OS.  And our family had a sudden influx of iPhones which connect to the router.
I've poked around in the router's settings to no avail. I've checked the release notes for the firmware updates but I don't see anything relevant.  I'm considering going rogue (to use the parlance of our times) and installing the Tomato firmware to see if it makes any difference.  But first are there any suggestions for me before I take this drastic step?
    Thanks,
    MJD

When the router complains of two devices using the same IP address, it is almost always correct.  And this will almost always cause bizarre problems with your network.  You must search your network to find the conflict.  To check this out, do an "ipconfig" on each computer, or display the IP address on the device.
Note that if a device uses a static IP address, it must be outside the DHCP server range, and it cannot end in 0, 1, or 255.
If you have an unsecured wireless network, the "duplicate IP address" could be from your neighbor's computer.  To fix this, add wireless security to your network.
Sometimes duplicate IP's can be generated if the router is shut down, then soon restarted or rebooted, while wireless computers are still "connected".  To fix this, disconnect (or shut down) wireless computers, then reboot router, then reconnect wireless computers.

  • WRE54G not compatible with Windows 7 HomeGroup

As the subject says, it appears that even with the latest firmware, the WRE54G doesn't seem to work with Windows 7's new HomeGroup feature.
I have 4 computers in my house running Windows 7, one of which is wireless.  All the wired connections would link up fine with HomeGroup, but the wireless computer kept giving me the generic error message "This computer cannot connect to a HomeGroup".  After wearching around on the net and trying a number of different things, I was still unsuccessfull.  Finally, I tried unpluging the range extender and it connected to the HomeGroup right away.  As soon as I plug the range extender back in, all HomeGroup functions quit working.
    My router is a WRT54GL v1.1
The router seems to work fine with HomeGroup, even over wireless.
My Range extender is a WRE54G v3 running firmware version 3.04.01
Everything has worked fine with the extender untill this issue.  Wireless computer has a strong signal and has not had any disconnect problems since installing the extender.

Could it be that WRE54G does not support ipv6 and Windows 7 homegroup requires ipv6?
By the way, my computers see each other using "work group" and can share files and printers. It is only the homegroup feature that does not work.

  • Small biz network squirrely after installing wrt54gl

Put the WRT54GL into the mix on our peer-to-peer network this morning. Everything worked fine for a while, but now the computers can't talk to each other. I disabled DHCP management on the router because I suspected a conflict with with our server (running Win 2003 Server Standard Ed.) and set the router's ip address to static. Restarted computers, reset the router, but the computers still can't see each other.
All the computers are able to get on the internet just fine.
BTW, we're not using any wireless features.
    Thanks for any help.

Success! I pinged all the machines, and the ones that wouldn't return the pings had software firewalls - two of them running Zone Alarm and one running Windows firewall. After shutting off the ZA/Win firewalls, network connectivity was restored. Although I have to admit, I don't understand why. The software firewalls on the machines were all configured to accept connections from the other machines on our LAN - why did they go squirrelly after putting the router on the LAN? You would think (or at least I would think. . .) that if the machines running the software firewalls were going to suddenly have an issue, it would be with the router, not with each other. But the opposite was the case - every machine was able to access the internet through the router, but couldn't access files on local machines over the LAN.
Ah! I hunted a little more and answered my question. Before putting the router on the LAN, our internal network was using the 192.168.0.x ip range. After installing the router, it changed to 192.168.1.x
Here again, though, I have another question - why? I didn't run the Linksys setup cd that came with the router on every machine, only 3 out of 8. Did Windows somehow adjust dynamically? It would seem so, but you experts out there tell me. Anyway, I changed the trusted/LAN zone in Zone Alarm from 192.168.0.x to 192.168.1.x, and now things seem okey dokey, even with ZA running.
    Thanks for your help.

  • Unable to connect to WRE54G

I bought a WRE54G (v3) to extend the range of my WRT54G router, and I've followed every instruction to the letter. However, the setup utility claims it can't find any WRE54G in range, even though my laptop is right next to it. The "Link" LED on the expander is constantly red although I have disabled all wireless security on my router.
I tried every suggestion on these forums regarding the reset and auto configuration buttons, to no avail.
I tried hooking up my laptop with a network cable, changed its tcp/ip setting so that it would request a 192.168.1.239 IP address, with 255.255.255.0 subnet mask, but the WRE54G won't respond to ping at 192.168.1.240, not even after being reset to factory defaults (although I have no way of knowing for sure since it doesn't exist as far as the network is concerned)
Basically, the expander doesn't show up in available wireless networks and it doesn't respond to wired communications so I can't even access the web configuration utility to set it up or figure out what's wrong. I'm pretty sure this particular expander is broken, but I wanted to make before I take it back to the store. Did I miss anything?
    Thanks in advance

This is what I have done to configure my WRE-54G (v.3) with cable. It worked fine with my Router WRT-300N/ Acess Point WAP-4400N, all of them with latest firmwares. BTW, In the set up process I used and old notebook PC running Win-XP Pro to connect directly to the expander by an ethernet cable. I have 2 other PCs with same OS, connected by cable to router; and 2 wireless notebooks from HP running Windows Vista Home Premium.
    1) Reset the expander for about 1 minute;
    2) Connect RJ-45 ethernet cable to expander and ethernet port on a PC:
    3) Manual set the PC (TCP/IP properties) to: IP 192.168.1.111; SM 255.255.255.0; Gateway 192.168.1.240;
    4) Open your browser and type 192.168.1.240 (default IP of the expander), type admin to log on to expander;
    5) Set channel, SSID and security the same of the router/a.point; set mode to Mixed;
    6)change default IP of the expander from 192.168.1.240 to 192.168.1.241 (according to the Linksys recommendation I have seen somewhere in this forum to avoid IP conflict in Windows). This new IP will be necessary every time you need to access the setup utility again;
    7) SM 255.255.255.0; Gateway 192.168.1.1 (yes, this is the IP from the Router);
    8)Don´t forget to save all changes in expander setup;
    9) After making all changes, reset your PC to Dynamic IP;
    10) Remove cable and locate the WRE-54G on a place to best pick up signal from your Router/AP.
In my particular case, the expander shows in its "link status" the MAC from my WAP-4400N, perhaps because it is closer from the access point than the router, I guess. On the other hand, I can "ping" all 3 devices (the router, the access point ant the range expander) with success (192.168.1.1; 192.168.1.245; and 192.168.1.241, respectively).
That´s all. At last, I think Linksys could be more detailed in the instructions in  order to make all the process easier.
But I still find the WRE-54G a great product !!!!!!!!!!!

  • Connection problem on WRT54GL

I just got my fathers old linksys WRT54GL. I Have resat everything, and made my own name, password etc.
When i try to connecet, i can get on the network, but there's no internet connection. Even when i put an ethernet cable between, it does the same. i have internet connection when i connect directly to the router though.. What to do?
    Regards

Are you on a Cable or DSL internet service provider? For Cable, you enable mac clone on the router. In that way, the router will get the internet connection from your internet provider. As for DSL internet connection, it depends. A DSL internet provider could set their modem to DHCP or Bridge. DHCP modems from what I know will use the same ip address range like 192.168.1.1 and the default ip address of the router is 192.168.1.1. So what you can is change the lan ip address of the router to 192.168.2.1 so that the conflict between the modem and the router will be corrected. You have to make sure as well that the leds on the router are lit up properly. Check if power is solid on it, wlan led should be on as well. If your computer is plugged-in to ethernet port 1 then port 1 on the leds should be lit up or flashing. And most importantly, the internet port should be on or flashing on the router.
Refer to the link below that will help you with the setup.

  • Tying MAC to static IP with WRT54GL router

    Hi,
We are using a WRT54GL wireless router to connect 4 pc's to the internet. One of these pc's requires a static IP address since the router can only reliably do port-forwarding for static IP's (I would like to SSH to it and use it as a web-server). I was told that this router had this capability, but for the life of me I can't find it.
Would someone tell me how to do this? I am running the latest firmware (v4.30.11).
Thanks in advance for your reply,
    Michiel
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

DD-WRT is pretty stable and well maintained. There are a lot of people using it and you get excellent support, if you don't mind some very technical answers at occasions. Generally, flashing unsupported firmware will void the warranty. But that would only be a problem if you had a bad flash. And even for a bad flash you often have options to recover the router.
For the static IP address on the computer change the network settings for the ethernet interface. I don't know Gentoo you should have administration GUI for that somewhere.
You can use the following values:
IP address (as mentioned before) e.g. 192.168.1.10
    subnet mask 255.255.255.0
    gateway address 192.168.1.1

As long as the static IP addresses do not create conflicts with the DHCP server address pool there won't be any issues running some static IP computers in the same LAN with DHCP clients.

  • Will WRT54GL act as repeater for WRT54GL??

Im having trouble getting my WAP54g to speak with my wrt54gl. And the wrt54g is not available to purchase were i live, only the wrt54gl. So im thinking if the wrt54gl will speak flawlessly with another wrt54gl as repeater? Then i will buy another wrt54gl and flush the wap54gs down the toilet.
    thanks

There is no way to set a 2nd WRT54GL as an Repeater. So you can buy 1 WRT54GL and a Range Expander WRE54G, As WRE54G is a Wireless Repeater and it will be best for your Network and it will solve your purpose.

  • WRE54G configuration problem

I just bought a WRE54g v3 range expander. I am really having problems to make it work. As my ISP provides me with a wireless router with only one slot in the back, I have this connected to a WRT54G router which is the one I would like the range expander to work with. I therefore wired the expander to the router for configuration, but the LEDS don;t get blue, and moreover, I get conflicting IP address messages. Do i need to set up an static IP address for the PC? Is the problem somewhere else?
    thanks for any tip

connect the expander to the computer and assign a static ip address on the computer ( 192.168.1.10 )
access the expander using http://192.168.1.240 . "admin" is the default password...
once on the web interface..change the wireless settings as per the settings on the WRT54G...disconnect the WRE54G and remove the static ip add from the computer...
do a power cycle...also , make sure that you disable the wireless on the modem provide by the ISP....
place the WRE54G at a location where it will have good signal strength from the WRT54G and can therefore repeat the signals to a farther distance...
