Write errors when using non-administrator shared accounts

Dear all,
we're experiencing an apparently weird issue with our Xserve machines. The entire setup comprises of 4 Xserve, all of them running Lion Server, connected together and to the network of our institution through an Ethernet switch.
I've set up an OpenDirectory master on one of these servers and created several shared user accounts for the various people working here (the /Users folder is hosted on that machine and shared across the other three). Users can access any of these machines via VNC.
A few days ago a guy reported to me that he was getting random write errors when attempting to perform basic operations on his shared user folder (e.g., unzipping a file or running a software which write data on the disk). I had a look into it and found that the guy was right. When attempting to extract a zip archive (which, I'm absolutely confident, is a non-corrupted .zip file) from the Terminal - using his account - a few errors came out, like:
error:  cannot create pybrain-pybrain-87c7ac3/pybrain/auxiliary/importancemixing.py
error:  cannot create pybrain-pybrain-87c7ac3/pybrain/rl/learners/meta/meta.py
Every single time I run the unzip command the errors are related to different files.
Weirdly enough, the problem arises only when the user works on one of the three machines that don't host the shared /Users directory. Furthermore, it only applies to non-administrator accounts (if I try to perform the same operation using my admin account everything works smoothly, no matter on which machine I'm working). Promoting that guy to administrator (Server->Users->right click on the username->Edit User->Allow user to administer this server) made the problem disappear. Even more weird, after I removed the flag on "Allow user to administer this server" for that user, he is not experiencing the issue anymore.
What the heck is going on?
Cheers,
Fabio

1.  You can delete the Test1 and Test2 accounts if you log into your Administrator Account. Once in your Admin Account, open System  Preferences > Users & Groups and you will see and be able to delete the Test1 & Test2 accounts.
2.  Leave your Guest account for, well, guest users.  Do not use it in the normal course of events.  When you log out of the Guest account, all the settings, caches, etc. are wiped, as are all files and folders that you may have saved in the Guest account home folder.  The Guest account is truly designed only for temporary, guest use.
3.  Leave your Administrator account for use only for installing programs, doing system administration, managing accounts, etc.
4.  User your named account as your regular account.  It appears to already be a User account.  The primary limitation is you cannot install programs in a regular User account.  This actually helps protect your Mac from viruses and other malware that would need to install software in order to corrupt your system.
5.  You can turn off the need to enter a password when your computer sleeps in System Preferences > Security & Privacy > General.  UNcheck the option called "Require password for sleep and screen saver."

  • Htp buffer error when using non-ascii characters

    Hello, and my question:
    When I issue the following command, 10000 times to print on web it works well:
    htp.prn('<a>this is a test</a>');
    But when I issue this command by just substituting "this is a test" with characters that their ASCII codes are between 128 to 255, I can not print more than 100 times and I get htp buffer error!
    could you please solve this puzzle for me?
    Thanks in advance and
    Regards

    You should try the DB forum for better help. This is really an HTP package issue.

  • VISA Write Error when using loop Err 1073807339

    My program requires that I 'Start' my VISA device, poll it every second 10 times without clearing the device buffer. It is a counter and we are trying to accumulate counts over a 10 second period.
    I first initialize the device with the 'Sart' command then try to get data.
    For some reason the vi consistently runs successfully only 9 times and generates an error on the 10th run.
    I guess the simple answer would be 'Why don't you just take 9 samples for your data?' I'm hoping there is a better explanation so that I can do it properly.

    The time out error on the VISA write to a GPIB device could be that the device did not ACK that it read the message.
    On a quick look at your code, it first looked like you are sending \n at the end of your command, but you did not set the display mode of the Combo Box to "\' Code Display. So in fact what you are sending is SHOW_COUNTS follow by the "\" follow by the letter "n" and not a line feed.
    How does your device handle the text "\n" at the end of the commands?
    Does your device responed to the "System Error" command or the *STB command to see if it is setting an error flag?
    Is it a SCPI device?
    Most SCPI devices will hold up to 10 errors in it's system error buffer.
    Just a guess without knowing much about your GPIB device.

  • Jax-ws 2.2.8 and ws-addressing: Client throwing java.lang.NullPointerException on receipt of HTTP 202 when using non-anonymous ReplyTo address

    Server: JBoss EAP 6.2.0
    Client: JDK 1.7.0_51 x64
    JAX-WS: RI 2.2.8 ( via -Djava.endorsed.dirs )
    I am getting a java.lang.NullPointerException when calling the operation on the WS endpoint from the client when using non-anonymous replyTo address.
    I have simplified the scenario into a small test case that hopefully others can replicate. Since the exception is happening on the client instead of the server, I would think that the container used is irrelevant, but I have specified it nonetheless.

    In summary:
    Server is listening on port 8080
    Client will listen in port 8082 for the callback from the server for the SOAP response
    Now when I run the client, I see that the proper behaviour as far as ws-addressing is concerned. That is:
    client  -- SOAP request ( on port 8080 ) --> server
    client <-- HTTP 202 ( empty HTTP body )  --- server
    client <-- SOAP response ( on port 8082 )  --- server
    All well and good, except that I am getting a NullPointerException on the client side when I call the operation.
    With debugging of the SOAP request and responses, I get the following output:

    Any ideas ?

    I think I have found when I get this error and probably I have found a bug. I will appreciate if someone can confirm this.
    In my BPEL project setup, my BPEL process's wsdl file imports another wsdl from different namespace. Here is sample snippet -
    <wsdl:definitions targetNamespace="http://namespace/1">
    <wsdl:import namespace="http://namespace/2" location="resources/another.wsdl"/>
    <plnk:partnerLinkType....../>
    </wsdl:definitions>
    Please let me know. I checked the bundled samples with Oracle BPEL PM and did not find any similar case where process wsdl imports another wsdl.
    Thank you.

  • Using non-administrator user to start/stop services

    We have Crystal Report Server (BOE XI) running on Windows platform.
    Our customer's policy dictates that operator ID are to be use to manage starting/stopping of Crytal Report Server. The operator ID has no administrator rights and it has no access to the Microsoft Management Console.
    Would it be possible to use non-administrator ID to start/stop Crystal Report Server services? Appreciate if anyone could share on the configuration.
    Thank you.

    salafrance wrote:A simple way would be to write a small C program to run systemctl setuid root.
    So perhaps like this?
    #include <stdlib.h>
    #include <unistd.h>
    int main(void)
    execl("/usr/bin/systemctl", "systemctl", "start", "calibre", NULL);
    return(EXIT_SUCCESS);
    compiled it, then "chown root:root test", "chmod u+s test" and it worked.
    But is this safe? I have absolutely no knowledge about potential security issues...
    I also have thought about periodically restarting calibre, but on the Raspberry Pi, with it's slow ARM, the start takes ages and the processor is completely busy with that task for some minutes.
    And that's the reason why I also want to avoid starting an entire second systemd session... Or is this not that resource intensive?

  • Error when using filter on date column in interactive report

    Hi,
    I'm getting the following error when using the filter on a date column. None of the criteria in the filter list work. All give me the same error but when I use the filter on a column feature (in the search bar) and use ">" and "<" those work.
    Can someone please help me????
    " Settledate is in the last 2 years
    ORA-30175: invalid type given for an argument ORA-02063: preceding line from MAINDATA "

    I have a similar problem . I have an interactive report based on resultset stored in a collection; since all the columns of a collection are of string datatype, I convert the columns to appropriate datatypes before its returned to the user; everything works as desired except when I try to filter on a data column , I get a ORA-01858: a non-numeric character was found where a numeric was expected .
    I turned on debug mode and am copying the output here , column c009 which is aliased to 'C' is the one that I am trying to apply the filter on

    I have tried to convert c009 to date, timestamp and timestamp with time zone datatypes ; they all return the same error ,but all 3 datatypes work fine with systimestamp when I run them in sqlplus. Any help would be appreciated.

  • "Medium Write Error" when trying to burn a CD!!!!

    I keep getting a Medium write error when trying to burn an audio cd using ITunes. I already tried switching out cheap CD-R's for high quality ones and the same thing happens. I also can't burn a picture CD using finder because another error message pops up so i don't know what it could be... Any help would be greatly appreciated!

    Could be an issue with the drive itself, especially if you have one of the Matshita drives installed in many Macbook Pro which are reported to be 'krappy' drives. See here for more info...

  • Burning error when using toast

    i am using leopard 10.5.5 and using toast 9.0.2 with the hd plugin.
    i am getting an error when trying to burn a dvd, i have created a file in an animation program, taken it into final cut pro, edited what i wanted, then exported it as 1080i50. the file plays no problem in quicktime on my laptop, but i need to put it on DVD. opening up toast, it goes into the prog window, encodes the file but then i get an error, -50, can not burn DVD.
    does anyone know of this problem, or maybe has any ideas on what i can do to work out the problem?
    cheers

    His first sentence states the OP is using 10.5.5 and apparently has not updated the profile.
    sure confused me
    I occasionally get errors when using Toast to burn DVD’s. I found quitting other applications during the burn eliminated the errors. Not the optimal solution, but it couldn’t hurt to try.
    I think he is referring to HD DVDs per his first sentence, but it's not clear to me.
    It could be anything from a bad blank to a flaky optical writer to, as you mention, other software running. I usually turn all my apps off when burning DVDs. Mail, Safari, Firefix, etc., although on fast machine like this one it probably does not matter.
    On the other hand, when I burn a R/W DVD or CD, I ignore these things and just computer as usual.

  • Write error while using the UTL_FILE.FILE_TYPE

    i get an exception 'ORA-06125 - write error' when trying to write to a flat file using utl_file.put_line function. The hint which i got out of trial and error was this 'write error' exception came out when the total character size exceeded 725-730 characters. I don't know if that is the real problem.. but when the character count is less than this.. it writes without any problem..
    Thanks in advance!!

    Try setting max_linesize in FOPEN function, for example
    p_file := utl_file.fopen( p_dir, p_filename, 'w', 4000 );
    maximum value is 32767. The default is approximately 1000 bytes.
