Write keywords to exif

I am a simple guy, I'm no computer whizz.
I want to make sure that all the time that it'll take tagging my photos with keywords will not be wasted when the photos are viewed in a different program/app/system thing.
So can anyone tell me in plain English the easiest way to write keywords to exif?
(I'm using iPhoto '09)
much obliged

File -> Export
From the dropdown at Kind select Jpeg or Tiff*
Check the box at 'Title and keywords'
This will write the keywords to the exported file.
*If you choose Original you get a copy of the original file. As that didn't include the keywords you've added in iphoto they will not be exported.
IF you choose current they won't be exported either as they are stored in the Database and not in the file
IF you choose png then won't be exported because png does not support metadata fully.

  • File Write Keyword Tag don't create a xmp file

    Hi,
    I use PSE 8 with WIN7 64 Ultimate.
When I used the  File > Write Keyword Tag command, no xmp file is created. I saw, that the filename was renamed to xxx_edTMP-1.NEF for a short time and than the original name is show. The changedate of the file is not changed Sometimes the file is not renamed the new name is xxxx_edTMP-1.NEF.
    Why?
    Nils

I assume that you are trying to write tags assigned to a Raw original.
There is a bug that sometimes PSE does not write tags (or other metadata) to .xmp for Raw files. This usually depends on the type of file; this command never seems to work for .NEF files.
A workaround is to use John R Ellis's psedbtool

  • Can't write keywords to photos

I have both PSE 9 and 10 on my iMac running Mountain Lion.  In both versions, when I try to "Write Keyword Tags  and Properties Info to Photos," I instantly get a message saying, "An error occurred while reading files or writing files to disc.  The disc may be full or there my be a problem with the source media.  The disc is NOT full.  I tried deleting .plists for the organizer and removing saved application states (whatever that means)  I repaired permissions 3 times.  It told me that there was one repair it could not (or would not) make.  "Warning SUID System/Library/Core Services/RemoteManagement/ARDAgent.app/Contents/MacOS/ADRAgent has been modified and will not be repaired."  This means nothing to me, as I don't speak tech.  It might have something to do with the fact that I recently had to replace my hard drive (under a year old).  Anyway, I thought I would include that info in case it possibly had anything to do with my PSE problem.
For comparison, I have the same setup on my MacBook Pro (PSE Versions 9 and 10 with Mountain Lion).  I have no problem with the write Keyword Tags, etc. on that machine.

Photos are located on Mac hard drive, under a huge hierarchy of folders (built from several iterations of  Elements).  But I have 2 TB of HD space, and it is not at all full.  As I said, I am not having this problem on my MBP, but I want to work on the big screen of my iMac.

  • Automatic "Write Keyword Tags and Properties Info To Photo"?

I have PSE8 and one of the reasons I stopped using it was because I had to periodically do a manual "Write Keyword Tags and Properties Info to Photo" so that all the metadata stays with my photos and isn't bound to just the PSE database.  This was very tedious to try and select just the files since I last performed a manual write not to mention if any older files were changed that I didn't know about.
I see that the caption/title is automatically written to the files when changed but ratings and keywords are not.  Why isn't there any option to write everything automatically when changed?  Is this still the case with PSE9?  Thanks.

That would take care of newly imported photos but what if someone added a keyword tag later to a photo from several months ago and I didn't know about it.
No, this takes care of ALL files
The only way to make sure all are covered is to select all photos in my catalog ...
This is exactly what 99jon suggested
... and write tags which would result in thousands of unnecessary writes.
If there's no new tag information, then nothing will get written (and even if it did, what's the harm, a photo had 3 tags before, and now it has the exact same 3 tags...)

  • Why aren't album keyword tags written to metadata using Write Keyword Tag... command

When I display file properties within organizer it shows albums as keyword tags but after using the "Write Keyword Tag and Properties Info to File" command, the album keywords do not make it to the metadata.
Why is this?  I would really like for it to work.
I am using PSE version 8.  Does it change in version 9?
    Thank you!

    Ken,
    Thanks for your reply.
I think the way that Adobe has implemented albums is a little more like keywords than a saved search.  The reason I say this is because of the following:
    1. They appear with the keyword tags to the bottom right of the photo in the organizer.
    2. When you right-click on a photo and choose "Show Properties", they are listed with the other keywords.
    3. If you try to create a keyword with the same name as an album (to get the album name written to the metadata), PSE warns you that you already have a keyword with the same name.
I see what you are saying but I think the Adobe should either make a clear distinction between albums and keywords or at least give you an option to write the album keywords to the metadata if you choose.
Do you know how to submit product enhancement requests?
    Thanks again for your time.

  • Write Keyword Tag And Properties Info To Photo

    Hi
In my old PSE5 on Windows i used the function "File > Write Keyword Tag And Properties Info To Photo".
I have now moved to Mac and PSE8 and can't find a simmilary fuction.
I use the Adobe Bridge CS4 to organize and tag my photos, but the tags is store in the *.xmp file.
How can i write the keywords to the photo file (NEF/RAW) like in PSE5 on Windows ?
    Regards
    PSEonMac

Hi Thanks for you fast answer.
I can see what you mean, if i put a keeword on a jpg file it's automatically stored in the jpg file on Mac, nice.
So this means that if i want to view my photos in tools like iPhoto / Picassa i can only use my keywords if i convert the raw files to jpg.
(iPhoto can ofcause show the raw file, but no keywords)

  • Does 'Write Keywords As Lightroom Hierarchy' work?

I'm trying to export my keywords along with their hierarchy in the xmp of a jpeg.
I believe I've read somewhere that enabling the 'Write Keywords As Lightroom Hierarchy' is supposed to output the keywords in their hierarchy separated by a pipe '|' character.
From what I can tell this doesn't happen.  It seems that containing keywords are included but are not separated by a pipe.
e.g. if I have the keyword 'test2' within the 'test' keyword when I export instead of seeing:
    test|test2
    I see:
    test;test2
Which means that other programs can't interpret the hierarchy.
Anyone got this to work as designed?  Am I misinterpreting what is supposed to happen?  Did it work differently in older versions and this hierarchical export is no longer supported in 2.5?
    Thanks
    -Adam

The first image is a screen capture of a throw away image in PSE 7. The second image is  a screen capture of MS Pro Photo Tools and the Vista Image Properties/Details for the same image. There are two hierarchies created in Lightroom and exported as Lightroom hierarchies: Places/National Parks/Glacier and Wildlife/Birds/Clark's Nutcracker. The keywords show up as a flat hierarchy with each keyword separated by a comma in PSE 7 and by a semicolon in both Pro Photo Tools and the image details. I have not been able to find a way to get PSE 7 to respect Lightroom hierarchies.
I would be particularly displeased with Adobe to learn that the Windows version of Bridge does respect Lightroom hierarchies now that Adobe is offering Bridge bundled with the Mac version of PSE 8 but sticking Windows users with the Organizer

  • Save keywords in exif data

I am a new Mac user nearly completely reprogrammed from MS, but I have one issue that is keeping me from switching 100%.
When I use Vista's image manager or Picasa, I can embed keywords(tags) right into the images (which are stored on a server), and that embedded keyword data is then available to all other users of the images. This to me seems fundamental to image management today (even Vista has it standard).
Does someone have some method to get keywords into the exif data of the original file? I don't want to mess with exporting/copying etc.
Apple? what's up with this? The keyword tool is fantastic, yet nearly useless to me...
    Thanks.

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. On a one time or 30 day basis you can use the demo version of iView MediaPro to write the keyword, title and comments to the original file by following the instructions in first part of Tutorial #1. The demo is only good for 30 days so you can at least get your current files embedded.

TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • Read/write keywords using applescript and iMagine Photo

Does anyone know if applescript & iMagine Photo are capable of reading/writing to the IPTC keywords?
I can't seem to figure it out. I use
    {exif type:info, exif unicode:gImageInfoText}}
to modify description ({exif type:info, exif unicode:gImageInfoText}) field of the IPTC data but can't understand how to write to the keywords field.
Does anyone know to simply read the keywords form the IPTC data?
    Thanks.
    Pedro

You could install [ExifTool|http://www.sno.phy.queensu.ca/~phil/exiftool>, and then use “do shell script” commands such as in the following examples:
    *do shell script "exiftool -keywords=AppleScript -keywords=\"iMagine Photo\" -keywords=IPTC ~/Desktop/myPicture.jpg"*
    --> " 1 image files updated"
*do shell script "exiftool -keywords ~/Desktop/myPicture.jpg"*
--> "Keywords : AppleScript, iMagine Photo, IPTC"

  • Hierarchical keywords via exif data

I am trying to import plant photos into Lightroom4 with their Family, Genus and Species along with Location keywords, by placing the data in the image using exiftool. But failing. One hierarchy seems to work, but not more. I can replicate what Lightroom creates, but it does not seem to read OK.

The problem is not really the exiftool command: rather that I have been
trying various combinations of exif data to create hierarchical keywords
    on import.
    I am using
    exiftool -csv=test.csv .
with one image, and various contents of the HierarchicalSubject of the
csv file. I check what I have created using
    exiftool IMG_0016.JPG | less
I added keywords within Lightroom and saved the metadata to see what it
wrote: it seemed to be HierarchicalSubject, Subject and Keywords. But I
seem to need just HierarchicalSubject when I import.
If I define keywords Big and small within Big, and create
    HierarchicalSubject: Big|small
then on import I get the hierarchical keyword OK. But if I try to also
    set up Big2|small2, by using
    HierarchicalSubject:Big|small, Big2|small2
I get a single keyword small2 nested in "small, Big2", nested in Big.

  • Bridge no longer writes keywords to IPTC

    Using CS5 Extended v. 12.0.3 x32, Bridge v. 4.0.4.2, Windows 7 w/SP1
After adding keywords to about three dozen images, Bridge gave the error message: "There was a error writing metadata to @filename."
Close and restart Bridge did not solve problem.
Close and restart CS5 did not solve problem.
Reboot and restart CS5 did not solve problem.
    CHKDSK revealed bad sectors.
Replacement of HD and restore by backup solved problem for approx. 36 images.
The error message above has returned.
Restart of Bridge and/or CS5 does not solve problem.
Reboot and restart does not solve problem.
    CHKDSK reveals no drive errors.
I am currently unable to use Bridge to write metadata to any file, in any folder.
Is this a known bug?  Is there a fix or patch?  Is there an upgrade I am not finding?  Can you think of any other way out of this?
    Thanks in advance,
    ACB

Thank you very much.  Bridge will not start with a right click from within CS5 (the way I use it most), but right clicking on the installed Bridge icon DID ALLOW me to write the metadata to a .jpg I had NOT been able to write to before when invoking Bridge from within CS5.  I can live with that.
I then went on to extended your suggestion to running CS5 itself via right click start and running as Administrator, and it seems to do as well as invoking Bridge itself via right click.  I have learned something here.
Thanks again very much for the suggestion.

  • Write keywords to the opened image

    Hi
The document "Photoshop JavaScript reference" tells the document.info.keywords  is a read/write property.
I opened an image in Photoshop that has 2 keywords. I can read it normally but it seems I cannot write or delete these keywords
I need to delete all the current keywords and add just one called "Processed". What I´m trying:
    var doc = app.activeDocument
    var k = "Processed"
    doc.info.keywords = doc.info.keywords.splice (0, doc.info.keywords.length)
    doc.info.keywords[0] = k
It gets no errors but does not do anything :/
    What Am I missing?
    Thank you a lot
    Gustavo.

    Perfect!!
It´s easier than I was doing
    Thank you a lot!
    Best Regards

  • Can I create "keyword list" from keywords in EXIF data?

Hi - I'm still a Mac and Aperture noob, so please excuse me if the question is dumb or ill-formed...
I used to use Photoshop Elements on a PC. I made pretty extensive use of "tags" (keywords, in Aperture lingo) for categorizing my photos. I wrote all the tags into the exif data of my photos, then copied everything over to Aperture.
Now, when I pull up an existing photo in Aperture browser, I can see the keywords that I already added. Great...but, is there a way to extract all the existing keywords from all my photos, and build a "library" of keywords that I can pick and choose from for tagging future photos?
Alternatively - if I could export a keyword list from Photoshop Elements (in txt or XML format, whatever) is there a way that I can import that into Aperture?
From the reading I've done so far, it seems like I have to manually enter keywords on each photo or do a batch update (and, again, manually enter them). I'd much prefer to have a list of keywords that I can scroll down, then just click to select. Is that asking too much of Aperture?

Welcome to the list and Mac's. Don't woory about your questions, veteran Mac and Aperture users here frequently post dumb and ill-formed questions.

I tried what you described to see what would happen. I opened an image in Preview and added a keyword to it (one I was sure wasn't in my Aperture) saved the file and imported into Aperture. The new keyword was bot in the EXIF data field of the image and in Apertures keyword list.
Are you familiar with the *Keywords HUD* (*Window->Show Keyword HUD*)? If you look there do you see your keywords from your imported images?
Alternatively - if I could export a keyword list from Photoshop Elements (in txt or XML format, whatever) is there a way that I can import that into Aperture?
There is a way to import and export keywords see *+Exporting and Importing Keyword Lists+* in the +Aperture Users Manual+ (get to it by *Help->Aperture Help*)
From the reading I've done so far, it seems like I have to manually enter keywords on each photo or do a batch update (and, again, manually enter them). I'd much prefer to have a list of keywords that I can scroll down, then just click to select. Is that asking too much of Aperture?
Not at all, ask away (you may not always like the answer )

  • Write Comments to EXIF?

I'm using iPhoto 6.0.6. Is there a way to write my photo comments to the EXIF data in the image itself? Maybe even some kind of external tool that will scan my iPhoto library and write the comments to the files' EXIF?
Also, does anyone know of a tool that can quickly and easily plot a spot on a map (such as Google Earth) and write the location info to selected photos in iPhoto? Quick ease of use is a plus, since I'm looking to retro-actively geotag well over 13,000 photos.
Any advice would be much appreciated, thanks!

HoudahGeo - 1.4.1 has Manual geocoding using Google Earth & Google Maps. There are some other GPS apps at VersionTracker.com that might meet your needs.

  • Write keyword tag information into your files

    Hi!
I have just installed Photoshop Elements10 and a problem has occured!
When writing keyword tag information into files the letters Å, Å and Ö creates problems.
If you for example try to add the tag "Montören" the result is that the word is written two times in the file properties, including once with weird characters, Example: Montören; Montören;.I have tried with different tags that includes letters Å, Ä and Ö and I allways get the same result. I have a Swedish version of Photoshop Elements10.
Can someone advise me on what to?
    /Viveka

How did you originally create your tag?  For testing, I just created an Instant Keyword Tag containg the letters ÅÄ by copying and pasting pasting the characters from the Character Map, assigned it to a photo, wrote the tag to the file.
The letters do display correctly in the Organizer afterward.  Same in IPTC info in IrfanView.
