Writing a jmx monitor for a message driven bean

I've been reading about using jmx to monitor some jms resources I have deployed to my
WL server. This monitor would monitor "some" MBean to watch for some Stuck Threads which
cause a disconnect to the jms queue to which I listen.
The problem is I'm not sure which, I'm not exactly sure which MBean I need to monitor. My
JMS Listener is an MDB which listens to a queue on a remote weblogic server. What happens is
something on the remote end causes a connection reset. About 10 mins later, I get a stack trace
dump and after that happens I'm no longer able to pull messages off my jms queue. I see logged
events where it says I'm successfully reconnected to my queue, but no amount of wishing will
let the MDB pull a message off the queue.
When the monitor detects a Stuck Thread, I'd like to force an application restart/redeployment, whichever
will accomplish a reconnection to the queue to which I'm listening. The other day, I went in through
the console, did a Lock/Edit and simply updated the already deployed application. Monitoring the log
file, I saw the mdb successfully reastablish connection to my remote end.
However, with 600+ MBeans, I'm kinda stuck on where I should start! Since I see the
stack trace in the AdminServer.log file, I'm thinking I should monitor some LoggingMBean.
But, it is JMS related, so there exists some confusion on my part.
If anyone with JMX experience could point me in the right direction, I'd appreciate
it. I'm just learning jmx, so pls be patient.

You have a couple of options here. You could monitor the WorkManagerRuntimeMBean's StuckThreadCount using a JMX Counter monitor, and trigger the action when that goes above 0.
You could also use WLDF to configure a Log watch to look for the Stuck thread log message, or use a Collected Metrics watch on the WM attribute, and assign it a JMX Notification. You could then write a JMX Notification listener to capture this event and perform the necessary corrective actions.

  • Can you set isolation levels of message-driven bean transactions?

    The problem: I have 3 different message-driven beans which each get a different type of message, except for a field that is common to all. That field is used as the primary key of an entity object. The message-driven beans configured to use a container managed transaction. Each message-driven bean, in processing the message, first does a lookup by primary key to see if the object associated with the key exists, and if it does not, it requests the entity's home object to create it. After that, they do further processing. The problem is that sometimes all the beans simultaneously get a message, resulting in each bean checking for the entity object at about the same time, and if they fail to find it (because none of them has created it yet), each creates an object, all with the same primary key. This is not caught until the beans start to complete their onMessage method, which I believe results in the container committing the transaction. One of the transactions will be committed successfully, while the other two will fail, get rolled back, and then be retried with the same message. The second time through, the other beans will find the entity object (since it has been created and committed) and they will complete correctly. In the end, they right thing occurs, except that there is a troubling exception or 2 in the log telling about the constraint violation (with the primary key) and the rollback. If it was just me, that would be fine, but our customer does not like to see exceptions in the log; that indicates to him that something is wrong.
    So, I am looking for someway to make sure that the actions of the message-driven beans are serialized. One suggestion from a colleague was to set the isolation level of the transactions being used by the container in processing the message-driven beans' onMessage method. However, the documentation does not mention any way to do this for a message-driven bean. Suggestions?
    Is the use of a UserTransaction a better way to do this? If I acquire a UserTransaction within the onMessage method of a message-driven bean, can I set its isolation level? How would this work? When I get a UserTransaction, does each client get a different transaction, or do they all get the same one?

    (1) The WebLogic JMS "unit-of-order" feature is a heavily adopted feature that was specifically designed to handle similar use cases - see the JMS developer guide for extensive documentation. In your use case, if "key" is used to define UOO, then there's no limit on the number of keys that can be processed concurrently, but messages for any particular key will be processed single-threaded in the order in which they were first submitted.
    Note that if you're using distributed destinations, the UOO feature is still fully supported - but the developer and/or administrator needs to decide whether to configure the destination to use "hash" or "path service" based routing (the JMS UOO edoc outlines the trade-offs).
    (2) Another alternative is to use a single MDB with max-beans-free-pool that processes all three types (as the other poster suggested). I think this assumes all MDBs run on the same JVM.
    (3) Another alternative is to use multiple queues, with a single MDB on each Q. Where some sort of hash algorithm is used to determine which Q is for the key. This approach is a "hand-coded" variant of the approach in (1) with "hash" based routing enabled...
    (4) If all MDBs actually do run in the same JVM, a third alternative is to use code the application to use a common lock to protect each key, eg, something like:

              I am working with weblogic 7.0
              I have created a message driven bean the receives messages and store them in the
              database.
              for performance issue I have put the (SQL)Connection and a preparedStatement in
              the ejbCreate() method ...and I close them in the ejbRemove() method...but I notice
              that the ejbRemove dose not called ... even when I restart the weblogic7.0
              I notice also that when I deploy the the Message driven bean ...it consume a number
              of connections equals the number of instances created by weblogic.
              if I redeploy the message driven bean ...the weblogic consume anthor connections
              without free up the previous connections.

              EjbRemove will never be called for a message driven bean as it follows the lifecycle
              of a StatlessSession.

              The container will call EJBRemove only when it gets a RemoteRuntimeException and
              has to recycle the bean.

  • Is Message Driven Beans Supported in iAS 6.5?

    Hello Everybody,
    Admin guide of iAS 6.5 speaks about using Message driven beans (mdb). It also says that iAS 6.5 supports EJB 1.1 specification. But, EJB 1.1 specification doesnt support mdbs. Only EJB 2.0 does this. Then how come iAS 6.5 supports mdb, when it says that it is EJB 1.1 complaint and not EJB 2.0 complaint.
    Please clear this doubt for me.

    This is what provided in the Developer guide. I have just read it.
    "iPlanet Application Server, Enterprise Edition 6.5, provides support for deploying message-driven beans. This implementation is based on the EJB 2.0 specifications,
    and is for developer use only. The message-driven bean infrastructure in this release has not been tested in a production environment."

  • Message Driven Bean Deployment for a JCA based inbound Connector in SAILFIN

    This post is partly related to my previous post regarding message driven bean deployment issue in SAILFIN b12 application server. I have made another post to put my question to a more specific title with some additions. I am developing a JCA based resource adapter (i.e. connector). The inbound module of the connector listens on a specific port for incoming messages from a server (EIS). The port property and the endpoint interface (custom made message driven bean interface, that is InboundListener) has been specified in the connector's deployment descriptor.     I have set the JMS resource and the queue properties on the admin console of the SAILFIN instance that is locally installed on my Linux machine (Suse 9 - kernel number: 2.6.5-7.244) in the following manner:

    When I first written this message driven bean, it was not implementing the MessageListener interface. It was only implementing my own InboundListener interface. I did this because JCA specification says that the endpoint (i.e. message driven bean ) is not supposed to make use of JMS and its MessageListener interface. It says it can support custom message listener interface so to say. Then I got the exceptions that are same as the exceptions stated below. So, I made the bean implement the JMS MessageListener interface in addtion to my InboundListener interface assuming that exceptions result from not including the JMS MessageListener interface. Then I generated the necessary JMS resources with configuration settings stated above in the application server. However, I am still getting the same exceptions (see below) and nothing has changed. Do you think the above configuration for the JMS resource is fine and appropriate to the activation configuration specifications in my message driven bean code? Am I missing something on this configuration? Below, I have indicated the message that I got on the linux terminal when I attempt to deploy the message driven bean and the related server log.     PS: The 'restart' command in the following linux terminal outcome basically makes a call to a bash script which deploys the message driven bean to the SAILFIN application server. The resource adapter instance is already deployed on the application server before attempting to deploy the message driven bean. I am sure that the resource adapter successfully receives the messages from the EIS but it cannot deliver them to the endpoint (i.e.the message driven bean) since the bean is unable to be deployed correctly. I am using Netbeans IDE 5.5.1

    This post is partly related to my previous post regarding message driven bean deployment issue in SAILFIN b12 application server. I have made another post to put my question to a more specific title with some additions. I am developing a JCA based resource adapter (i.e. connector). The inbound module of the connector listens on a specific port for incoming messages from a server (EIS). The port property and the endpoint interface (custom made message driven bean interface, that is InboundListener) has been specified in the connector's deployment descriptor. When a message reaches, the connector delivers it to the a message driven bean whose code is indicated in the following:

    I have set the JMS resource and the queue properties on the admin console of the SAILFIN instance that is locally installed on my Linux machine (Suse 9 - kernel number: 2.6.5-7.244) in the following manner:

    When I first written this message driven bean, it was not implementing the MessageListener interface. It was only implementing my own InboundListener interface. I did this because JCA specification says that the endpoint (i.e. message driven bean ) is not supposed to make use of JMS and its MessageListener interface. It says it can support custom message listener interface so to say. Then I got the exceptions that are same as the exceptions stated below. So, I made the bean implement the JMS MessageListener interface in addtion to my InboundListener interface assuming that exceptions result from not including the JMS MessageListener interface. Then I generated the necessary JMS resources with configuration settings stated above in the application server. However, I am still getting the same exceptions (see below) and nothing has changed. Do you think the above configuration for the JMS resource is fine and appropriate to the activation configuration specifications in my message driven bean code? Am I missing something on this configuration? Below, I have indicated the message that I got on the linux terminal when I attempt to deploy the message driven bean and the related server log.     PS: The 'restart' command in the following linux terminal outcome basically makes a call to a bash script which deploys the message driven bean to the SAILFIN application server. The resource adapter instance is already deployed on the application server before attempting to deploy the message driven bean. I am sure that the resource adapter successfully receives the messages from the EIS but it cannot deliver them to the endpoint (i.e.the message driven bean) since the bean is unable to be deployed correctly. I am using Netbeans IDE 5.5.1

    I am compiling and creating jar file for this class. Then I am creating a .ear file for this.

    Dear gurubbc,
    I don't know if it still matters to you but you can use the javax.ejb.MessageDriven annotation to point your bean on your queue. I had the same issue like you but i could not solve it properly by switchihg to weblogic.ejb.MessageDriven.
    Use the following annotation and it should work out:
    @MessageDriven
    (mappedName = "queue/mdb",
    name = "CalculatorBean",
    activationConfig = {
    @ActivationConfigProperty(propertyName = "destinationType", propertyValue = "javax.jms.Queue")
    Here you can see that the mappedName is the JNDI name of the queue you are trying to connect to. The name is the name for your Bean, and the only property passed is the destination type.

  • Message Driven Bean (MDB) for AQ Queue cannot start

    I am working on the creating a message driven bean in Managed OC4J 10.1.3.0 to consume messages from AQ Queue. I am using a Oracle AS generic JMS connector and a resource adapter to create a message listener for the MDB.
    I am able to make successful connections to the AQ and also consume messages, but if i try to start the MDB using the Oracle Application Server Web Admin console, the MDB fails to start, i have to restart the entire OC4J instance to restart the MDB.
    The error on the Admin Console says "Failed to start MDB. Please see log for details." , but the problem is nothing is written to the log file.
    I have tried setting the logging level in web admin console to FINER but still no new errors are written to the log file. I have checked the opmn logs, instance logs as well the home logs.
    Please help, since this issue will further help us decide whether we need to go with the implementation or not.

    As far as I know XMLType JMS messages are not supported when using OJMS. They might be for OC4J 10.1.3, but I thought it's an AQ limitation rather than an OC4J one.. To be sure you might just log a TAR on Metalink.

    and I created a Message Driven Bean ,I used those Queue , and all things was OK
    But I wanted to setup a Topic and use it in this manner
    I created a Topic like previous steps for setup Queue

    Except in Step 3  ,I selected Topic instead of Queue

  • Error during deployment of Message Driven Bean

    Environment: WLS 6.1SP3 on Win2K SP2, non-clustered.
              I am getting some error (or perhaps warning) during deployment of Message
              Driven Bean. Any one seen this before?

              Yes we do have an URL provided in the descriptor. It's
              t3://jms.server.net:7001.
              and the jms.server.net is resolved via a hosts file in Win2K
              eg,
              192.168.100.200 jms.server.net
              You are right in saying that the loopback in a dual-net card is a problem.
              But our solution
              above solves the issue as long as your host file does not use 127.0.0.1 as
              the IP.
              We need the URL b/c depending on our client's deployment , the JMS Server
              may be remote or may be local.

  • Message Driven Bean deployment problem in SAILFIN b12

    I am a fresh learner in EJB technology and have been experiencing a deployment problem while attempting to deploy a very simple message driven bean, that does nothing basically, to a SAILFIN (b12) application server instance. I am using NetBeans 5.5.1 to form the message driven bean but I deploy the bean manually on a Linux terminal. The following is the code of the bean:

    Hi thank you for your answer. I did not create any jms resource in the application server because my message driven bean was not implementing the MessageListener interface. Since it did not work in that way, I added the MessageListenerInterface to the bean and formed the necessary jms resources usuing the admin console of the SAILFIN but it keeps giving the same message both on the linux terminal and the server log.
    Let me explain my situation in a more detailed way. I am developing a JCA based resource adapter (i.e.) connector. The inbound module of the connector listens on a specific port for incoming messages from a server (EIS). The port property is defined in the connector's deployment descriptor. When a message reaches, the connector delivers it to the a message driven bean whose code is indicated in the following:

    PS: The 'restart' command in the following linux terminal outcome basically makes a call to a bash script which deploys the message driven bean to the SAILFIN application server. The resource adapter instance is already deployed on the application server before attempting to deploy the message driven bean.

    How to receive and send JMS messages in a message driven bean using a single session?

    Are you referring to writing code within the onMessage method itself to receive JMS messages?
    If so, that is not a pattern that is recommended, especially not in the case of a blocking JMS
    receieve. If you must write an explicit JMS receive within an EJB component it's best to use
    a "check the queue" approach where you give a very small timeout for the receive. That way
    if the message is there it will be returned but if not the call will not block.
    You'll also need to take the transactional settings of the onMessage method into account.
    If your are sending a message and then waiting for a response, those two actions can
    not be done within the same global transaction. For that, you'll need to either use
    BMT and perform each in its own transaction or just not use global transactions at all,
    in which case each send and receive operation will be atomic.

    I am trying to do some performance testing. I will be send millions of messages
    to a JMS server. These will be consumed by message driven beans (some appropriate
    number created at start up and kept in cache).
    The message driven bean performs uses some local entity bean to perform some database
    transaction.
    I want to measure how many messages did each of the instance of bean process?
    How much total time did each of message bean spend for their share of messages
    and average time for consumption of a message in a bean (which is actually dividing
    the total time for consumption of messages for a message bean dividing by total
    number of messages (assuming that bean pick up message instantaneously).
    Any idea if I could do that through weblogic console (I am using WL 6.1). Or by
    using MBeans??
    Any other idea will be useful.

    Mohit,
    Wily makes a tool tailored for doing the kind of performance evaluation you're
    talking about. How useful it will be to your specific situation depends a lot
    on some details that aren't in this post. Introscope (our tool) isn't designed
    to crack apart individual instances of your message beans, but it is designed
    to give you an idea of throughput per-component; exactly the kind of eval it looks
    like you have in mind.
    Roughly speaking... you can put rate and timer "tracers" on top of the relevant
    methods in your bean's class. There are also increment and decrement tracers,
    so you could match up send/receives between the components of your JMS app. This
    will work across JVMs. There is (of course) some overhead for the monitoring,
    but you could easily cancel out that number by doing a before and after and subtracting
    our overhead-- you will be probably be impressed with how small it really it.
    How many JVM instances are involved in your load test? How many different bean
    classes? Are you using strictly the standard JMS API calls, or do you want to
    monitor thing beyond that?
