Writing Academy Leader

Hello, all. I'm getting ready to score my feature in Logic. I want to have a QT video with the movie's first frame (beginning titles and music) timecode at 01:00:00:00. This will only be a video export. No audio, as I am planning on OMFing my audio into Logic seperately.
I know how to stripe (by putting a timecode read effect on the film). However, I went to the manual to put a 10 second count down in front of my pre-01:00:00:00 slug, and it seems to say that you have to go to the Edit To Tape function. Maybe I'm misunderstanding, but 1) I actually DON'T want to edit to tape. I only want to figure out how to put a 10 second count down on my QT export for scoring purposes in Logic. Also, 2) even if I DID want to use the Edit To Tape function . . . well . . . it's greyed out anyway.
Okay . . . so sorry for the long post, but can someone instruct me as to how to put a countdown timer/Academy Leader at the beginning of my movie export?
Thank you very much everyone in advance,
Javier Calderon

Okay . . . I just did a search for "Academy Leader", and it seems the information I'm looking for is right in there.
Sorry to belabour.
Thank you all.

  • DVD  Burning Freezes @ writing the lead out !

Has anyone experienced this? I burn disc all the time with no problem i have used all types of media, Apple disc are the best. but now it freeze at the lead out in DVDSP, Can any one help?

I can't help, but want to add my thoughts: mine used to work fine, now, when I get to the end, I get error messages; I've tried both native burning to the G5 and Toast. Since this is your thread, I'm going to post a separate one, so as not to detract from those who may know your specific difficulty, but boy they sound alike and I wanted to just say -- it's seems to be not exactly an uncommon problem. These are my error messages, I'm curious if they are the same as yours:
    Toast:
    The drive reported an error:
    Sense Key = ILLEGAL REQUEST
    Sense Code = 0x72, 0x03
SESSION FIXATION ERROR - INCOMPLETE TRACK IN SESSION
    G5:
This disc did not verify correctly and is unreliable. Because this disc is unreliable, discard it and try again using a new, blank disc. (Error code 0x80020063)

  • Writing lead-out problem ...?

    Howdy All,
I am using iDVD6 to burn a project to RIDATA DVD+R DL discs. The burn in iDVD6 90% of the time fails at the end (no error logs). However, after playing the DVD on a number of players (computer and dedicated) the DVD seems to be fine (all aspects - movie, slides, finish etc).
A hint at the problem may be that when I use Toast to burn data to the same discs it fails at writing the "Lead-Out" with Mac OS Error -5001. Searching the Internet hasn't really told me much about either of those (Lead-Out) or Mac OS Error -5001.
Burns have worked fine on the Samsung TSSTcorp CD/DVDW SH-S182D DVD Burner before, with other media (Imation DVD+R DL). However, writing the lead-out also failed on an Imation disc when retrying it after it failed on a RIDATA disc. DVD burns the Imation succeed.
Would anyone have any idea of what is happening? Can I just ignore the problem? Is there any easy way I can do a bitwise compare of the DVD and, say, a disk image? Does iDVD do a verify of the burn (although having it tell me the burn failed isn't a good sign if it does)?
If this is a media issue, which I assume it is (although the Imation failing is a problem), what has it go to do with writing the lead-out?
Thanks in advance for any suggestions, experience, comments.
    Cheers,
    Ashley Aitken.

    Hi Klaus,
Thanks for that, I kind-of guessed what "lead out" was about but thanks for giving all the details.
You don't provide any information on what Mac you
have, what OS, how much RAM (example: see my profile
at the bottom of this post), which would help a lot
    in diagnosing your problem.
Power Mac G5 - original single CPU model (can't recall the speed) with 2GB RAM etc.
New Samsung DVD Burner (as indicated in previous post), original drive didn't burn dual layer disks.
I've since found that my "backup" with Toast (spanning multiple DVD+R DLs) that failed the Lead Out actually bit-compares with the original.
As the DVDs which failed also seem to work fine in DVD players and on the computer, I wonder if this is really a significant error.
Many here find that Verbatim DVD-R, as well as Fuji
DVD-R, give the fewest problems, even more so when
they are burned at only 2x or 4x.
Thanks that info - its unfortunate we have to burn at slower speeds than the drive is rated - kind of beats the purpose ...
I've previously had pretty good results with Imation DVD+R DL but wanted something that was inkjet printable (DL).
I could only find RiData locally. I now know that they are though of as second tier media, so perhaps the media is the problem.
    Cheers,
    Ashley.

  • "writing lead-in" problem

    hello
we are experiencing an very frustrating problem. we are burning a Dual Layer disk with a one hour video, and a slide show. We have followed all of the pointers listed here about compatible file types and audio files. When we go to burn the disk it goes through all the processes until we get to "Burn" and then it simply ejects our disk (we have tried several different blank disks) and it gives the following message, "Current operation: Writing lead-in..." . the progress bar keeps going but nothing happens. Even if we put the disk back in this message remains.
We have tried the same process on the imac internal DVD burner as well as an external Sony DVD burner with the same result.
Does anyone know what "Writing lead-in" means and can you guess what might be causing idvd to eject our disk at this point?
    Thanks in advance.
    Bruce Trono

    Hi Bruce!
For what it is worth, 'Lead In':
Marks the start of each session on the disc.
The process of writing a lead-in and lead-out is called disc fixation and it generates a new disc session.
On CD media it is the area that contains the TOC data and precedes each program area. The main channel in the Lead-in area contains audio or data null information. This area is coded as track zero. The Q Sub-channel in this area is coded with the Table of Contents information.
The DVD Lead-in area is the area comprising physical sectors 1.2 mm wide or more adjacent to the inside of the Data area. The area contains the Control data and precedes the Data area.
Which helps not a lot in diagnosing your problem!
Like F Shippey asked, what media are you using, and are you sure you have a superdrive that can burn dual layer disks?
Indeed, why are using dual layer disks when the project is only one hour long?

  • IDVD (and Toast) never complete writing lead-outs

    Hi,
I've noticed occasionally that when using Toast 7 and iDVD 6 that during the writing process, the application in question persists on writing the lead-out. I understand what the correlation between lead-out and DVD playing length are. However, the drive just spins and spins for hours if left to do so. It is a Pioneer DVR-109 (not Apple blessed). The media is Memorex DVD-R 16x and I frankly haven't spent time trying other media yet.
I'm unable to halt the spinning by any means other than rebooting the computer. Usually, the result is fine. Sometimes the DVD doesn't conclude viewing properly.
    Any thoughts? Thanks!

Yup, the Memorex disks have been a bit problematic. I was able to burn to an image with iDVD.
I happened to have some TEON DVD-R 8x media a friend gave for another project, and that worked fine. The Memorex 16x media burned at 8x had the same issue.
I had had poor experiences with Verbatim media in the past. But co-workers have raved about the DL disks and the single-layer ones lately. Perhaps I will give them a try.
    Thanks!

  • IDVD 09' Freezes when writing lead-out.

Everything seems to work fine until it gets to "writing lead-out" it then seems to freeze up, after about 15-20 minutes it will eject my dvd disc, the screen stays the same as if it's still writing the lead-out. When i play back the dvd disc it stops playing about 1 minute into the movie. but if i play the copy on my hard drive (the one i'm trying to burn to disc) it works fine. Any ideas? Thanks for your time.

    Hi DJHYPE
Welcome to apple discussions. Sorry to hear you are having troubles burning to Dvd-R.
Suggestion: Let's narrow things down a bit. Try burning a disc image first to the desktop. You can do that from the file menu within iDvd. Next I'd like you to test the disc image with apple's dvd player app. Assuming it plays as expected, then burn to Verbatim, Maxell, or Tiaiyo Yuden at 4x. Please avoid Memorex while trobleshooting. Thereafter / once we have the issue resolved, feel free to burn to whatever media works best for you and your mac.

  • Writing Lead-out

"Writing lead-out" seems to take forever - ten minutes anyway. Why? Is there a way to speed this up? I had a two minute DVD that I can burn quickly but then writing lead-out goes on and on.
    Thanks

and it will go on and on.
What is surprising, is that the longer the DVD, the shorter the write out.
But writing the lead out on really short DVDs takes a bunch of time. No way to speed it up.
    best wishes
    David

    Hi Azie,
First of all, you ought to understand if this possible double amounts came from the BCF or not.
If not, then I would thouroughly examine the entries of the I/C elimination task.
I met several times the situations when a wrong strategy of writing differences lead not to a elimination, but just to the opposite: the doubling of difference. For me it looks like very much as your situation.

  • SATA DVD RW issues with K8N Platinum

    Hi
    I have MSI K8N,(939-pin) Platinum-SLI, Mother Board (AMD 3200+, 1.25GB RAM, 80GB SATA HDD).
On my system  I am facing trouble with SATA DVD- Writer (Samsung's 22x, S-223F/IDBH), as it can read all supported disks but unfortunately it is unable  to write/burn CD/DVD in any format since I purchased this DVD writer . Surprisingly this very same DVD writer  works perfectly  with any other Intel's machine for both reading & writing functions.
"However the DVD writer with IDE cable works fine on my system without any change or any exclusive setting anywhere."
Following measures I have tried but failed to burn any disk with my SATA DVD writer
    1. Reseted the BIOS to default/reset to factory setting.
        a) Verified that both of the SATA  controller were enabled.
        b) Verified that RAID was Disabled.
    2. Swaped & connected the DVD writer SATA cable to the port in which the HDD SATA cable was plugged in.
    3. Repleced the complete DVD writer from Samsung Service Center.
    4. Updated the Nero from 7.X to 8.X on the system
    5. Tried to burn disks with other freeware disk burning tools. (e.g. "Burn Plus", "Burn free" etc).
    6.  No other  Optical drive was attached.
    7. Updated the firmware of DVD writer from samsung's service center.
In all the cases of attempting to burn disks, I found either of the following errors
    Error Message 1
    Invalid block address
    Invalid write state
    Could not perform EndTrack
    Burn process failed
    ******************   OR   *****************************
    Error Message 2
    Invalid block address
    Writing short lead-out
    Session fixation error
    Burn process failed
Kindly help me to resolve the issue. :(

You didn't mention if the DVD drive showed up in your bios.  Look in "Standard CMOS Features" , you should have a list of all devices attached to the ide and sata ports.
you said the drive will play music, is the sound analog (through the small sound cable connected between JCD1 on your motherboard to the DVD drive, or are you getting sound digital (sound signal coming from the DVD through the sata cable)?
Is this a replacement DVD player, an upgrade from a CD player, or a brand new install?
Which Operating System are you using? In the past, I have had cd/dvd drives that some how got set up in the os only to play music and would not read or write data discs.
I fixed the problem by removing the cd/dvd drivers from the system and reinstalling.
I am using or have used  LG, Sony, and Aopen  BD/DVD/CD drives on this motherboard (K8N Neo2 Platinum).
"Ya Scottike , following are my observations
    1. I 'm able to see all connected drives connected through sata ports (i.e. HDD & this DVD Writer) in BIOS under "Standard CMOS Features".
    2. This DVD Writer is absolutely working fine for all reading functionality.
(It plays music are you getting sound digital (sound signal coming from the DVD through the sata cable)).
    3.  No Other Optical Drive is attached.
    4. Currently Windows Vista Ultimate is installed.
Note: I have also tried with Windows XP + SP2 earlier on my system, its gives same error whenever tried to
burn any disk with this DVD writer.
    5. This is a brand new DVD writer.
Hope I have answered all your queries. Please let me know what can I do to solve my purpose.
    Thanks

  • IDVD message, 'Error during formating'

    After adding ILIFE'09
I have successfully burned a DVD using Quicktime media , WMV converted to Quicktime and MP4 converted to Quicktime with my IDVD program, however after 4 days of burning, I suddenly received an ERROR message, after the "time remaining" message stated that the program was not burning, but in fact was "writing the Lead- out". The computer spit out my DVD disk and an air message said, " Error problem during the formating".
    So I tested DVD media: DVD-R, DVD+R , DVD-RW
I downloaded MPEG Streamclip 1.9.2 to convert my media to DV. files
I checked my Utilities Disk Permissions and choose to archive and install, to get fresh start.
However after all that work, I am still receiving an air message, "Error during the Formating" when I attempt to burn a DVD in IDVD .
So after hundreds of hours trying to solve this issue I am stumped.
I pimped out my computer last year with all the extra memory doo-dads
...however I didn't change my optical disc drive.
Did I burn out my Optical disc drive?

Well, I was right. I burned out the old Optical Drive.
So I went out, purchased a new drive , installed it myself ...then test burned all the different types of raw DVD disks I purchased ...and I'm happy to report they all burned perfectly.
It would have been helpful to have gotten some type of warning from the computer that the optical drive had faltered. This important information would have given me some type of clue as to what the precise issue was and how to proceed.
This is the information age ...hello?

  • Constant crashing.... any one shed any light on this?

    Hi
So, I'm doing some music and sound design for a movie - the first client screening is later today and I'm not done yet! Aaagh.
I'm trying to sync audio to a .avi movie file. I'm running the video from one drive - the audio from another and the system from another.
For some reason L8 is crashing every couple of minutes ! Needless to say this is really messing with my concentration and general workflow - adding hours of restart time to my tight schedule.
The CPUs on the G5 aren't stressed - I'm not using too much RAM. I've started again with a clean project... What could possibly be causing this? Can anyone make sense of crashlogs?
I keep getting freezes where a dialog box comes up and says 'initialising core audio' - Why is it doing that? Only half of the time it resolves itself...
Right now this situation is unworkable though I've got no choice but to finish it in logic!
Any help would be much appreciated and might just save my bacon.
    Thanks in advance
    Del

    Regarding doing it yourself...
I wouldn't recommend this unless you +really really+ know what you're doing (so +1 to yoink's advice on this). And then again, I'd still say "don't do it". Here's why...
When you roll your own conversion copies (i.e., from .avi to .mov or .dv), the movie file has to be re-rendered/re-encoded with a codec (compression). The very nature of compression -- and all the whacky video-world technical details that you may or may not get right -- means that the copy will differ in some way from the original version. In the best case this can be as benign as an ugly color shift. In the worst case, you'll end up with dropped frames, meaning you'll be scoring to a picture that doesn't match what was originally delivered to you, and this could potentially turn into a sync nightmare (and embarrassment) down the road.
I've posted about this before, but maybe it's worth repeating (or maybe not)... it's very important that you get a copy of a movie that you can actually work with. The details of this should be discussed with the editor before they send you a work print. And if despite such discussion you end up with a copy that's not to your spec, the first thing to do is to get on the phone with the editor and have them re-render you a new version.
    My specs are:
    • QT .mov
    • full frame render
    • 640x480
    • academy leader (no slugs please) with timecode burn rendered from beginning of academy leader at the film's frame rate
    • timecode positioned at the extreme top or bottom of picture (or in the black if letterbox)
Even with non-professional editors (indy films) I've been able to state my specs and get what I need. And if you don't get what you need, don't be bashful about making the call to the editor. While it will take them time to render any copy you recieve, at the end of the day they will thank you for being so consciencious about sync.

  • How to get film count down effect in Final Cut Pro?

I have seen movies that start with like the old nostalgic 3, 2, 1, with a circle around the numbers as it counts down to the start of the movie or other film starting counts that I would love to put to the beginning of some movies.
    Where can I find them?

It's an extra on the FCP disk. Go to Extras/Head Leaders for Cinema Tools/Leader Project.
Open the project and copy the leader from the appropriate timebase to put in your sequence.
However, if you are looking for old "film" leader, then do a google search for Academy Leader. Lots of companies like Digital Juice will sell the film leader.

  • Can't set staff style preferences

I'm trying to score a choral arrangement, so I need two treble channels, two bass and one for the piano. The style settings in the inspector windows both in the arrange window and the score window will not reset.
The style in the arrange window says "Auto" and shows "Treble" no matter what I choose in the menu. The score window style preference names "piano" no matter what instrument I've chosen, and, likewise, any other setting will not "take" when I try to change it. (I started by using a piano from the software instrument menu for the track channel but then tried a guitar to see if I could get a lead sheet setting, but no.)
I tried opening a new project and copying and pasting my regions into it, but it did the same thing.
According to everything I've read, this should be a very easy thing to do, but it's not working for me.
Can anyone tell me what I'm doing wrong? I'd really appreciate it if you can help. Thanks!
    Janet

OK, let me try again. Pardon my terminology in the last post. I haven't had much sleep and I'm very frustrated with this.
I'm trying to arrange a choral piece, so I need single staves for soprano, alto, tenor, bass. Some of the notes on these staves will go below the normal range, but I still need them to only be one staff, not a double. In the arrange window, in the track parameter box, "auto" displays "piano," which is the MIDI instrument I chose to compose with, and the pop-up menu (if that is what it is called here) now displays "soprano" in the clef field. When I open the score window, the style parameter shows "piano" and the parameter shows two staves in the clef field, "treble" and "soprano." I realize that by now I have tried to change the the thing so many times that everything is probably hopelessly confused. I want the score to display one treble staff, with the soprano notes that happen to go lower (like A3) on added lines at the bottom, not as a whole separate clef.
Somehow I accomplished this with one of my songs, writing a lead sheet, but I'm darned if I can figure out how. I'm using Logic 8. I have tried moving the regions into a new project but it doesn't help.
Do I need to reinstall? Have I screwed things up interminably? Will somebody please help?

  • Need help ASAP exporting 1280x720 video as 720x480 letterboxed w/ timecode

Hello. I'm using FCP 6.0.4. I have a video that is 1280 x 720, 24FPS, Sorenson Video 3 compression. I need to add an academy leader to this (the leader video file is 29.97FPS, Apple Motion JPEG A, 720 x 486), add a timecode filter using timecode reader (I know how to do this part), and get the finished video exported as a 720x480, 29.97FPS, DV/DVCPRO - NTSC video with the correct aspect ratio for the original video file. Every time I have tried this so far I get a 720x480 with the timecode but the picture looks stretched horizontally.
Please help with this ASAP as I am a student working on my final project and I've already lost several days trying to figure this out.
    THANK YOU!

Create a standard definition project (In easy setup choose DV or DVCPRO Anamorphic) > copy and paste the HD timeline on the newly created timeline and export.
If in QT player you see a stretched image, don't worry, that is normal when QT plays non-square pixels (anamorphic).
Hit command J (QT Show movie properties) > Click on presentation tab > Conform aperture > Clean or Production.
If this video is not for the web or generally for computers do not save the change as your movie will look absolutely fine when in DVDstudio you'll choose a 16:9 display mode.

  • Power calibration area error (0x73, 0x03.) ??? HELP!

At the beginning of iDVD writing the lead-in on a burn, I am encountering “errors were found during the burning process”.
The explanation is- “The recording device reported the media error: Power calibration area error. (0x73, 0x03.)”
Then I get a second window that reads- “MULTIPLEXER ERROR - There was a problem during multiplexing/burning.”
    Can anyone answer this problem?

    Hi Jeff
Power Calibration area error in iDVD
    Try:
    - Clening lens with a Cleaning CD/DVD
    - Change brand of DVD disks to eg: Verbatim DVD-R (I use this with good result)
    1. Make a disk image in iDVD then use this and
    2. burn with Apple Disk util tool or if You have Roxio Toast™ AND
    3. at an as slow speed as possibly eg: x1 or x2 or x4
