Writing captions using iphoto 09

How do I write captions using iphoto 09?

Use the Description field in the Info pane. This will be written to the Exif Metadata on export.
Or do you mean put text onto Photos? You can't do that with iPhoto. You'll need an external editor for that.
In order of price here are some suggestions:
Seashore (free)
The Gimp (free)
Graphic Coverter ($45 approx)
Acorn ($50 approx)
Pixelmator ($50 approx)
Photoshop Elements ($75 approx)
There are many, many other options. Search on MacUpdate. You can set Photoshop (or any image editor) as an external editor in iPhoto. (Preferences -> General -> Edit Photo: Choose from the Drop Down Menu.) This way, when you double click a pic to edit in iPhoto it will open automatically in Photoshop or your Image Editor, and when you save it it's sent back to iPhoto automatically. This is the only way that edits made in another application will be displayed in iPhoto.

  • Transferring captions between iPad and MacBook Pro using iPhoto

I have a new iPad3 on which I loaded the iPhoto App. When travelling, I load my photos from my Nikon D90 to the iPad. I then go into edit and add a caption. Once home, I hook my iPad up to my MacBook Pro (2007)(running Lion)(iphoto '11 v9.2.3) and the photos transfer (using iPhoto) to my MacBook without the captions. Is there a way to transfer the captions from the iPad to the MacBook Pro and vice versa along with the photos?

You cannot do it with AirDrop. Following quote is from iOS: Use AirDrop to wirelessly share content
You can't use AirDrop on iOS to share with OS X users, and OS X users can't use AirDrop to share with iOS devices.
You can do it via Photo Stream iCloud: My Photo Stream FAQ
Or as I do, via USB cable: iOS: Import personal photos and videos from iOS devices to your computer
And there are 3rd party apps such as http://www.photosync-app.com

  • What's is the best way to use iPhoto? I need to understand.

What's is the best way to use iPhoto? I need to understand.
I guess the iPhoto is only for people with 5,000 of personal photos.
Or even 200,000, but they can't use this app everyday.
I'm not talk about working as a photographer. They use Aperture.
They may use iPhoto like a family album that you take a look sometimes.
And don't care about putting photos from the camera or from internet everyday.
I have tons of music and I love iTunes 8, works great. So I tried but I can't stand iPhoto anymore.
I have over 173,000 photos. My goal is organize, have total control, crop in Preview and delete them fast as I can.
The iPhoto is too slow. And is not only about performance, more RAM... but the whole concept.
Finder is much better/richer/flexible to organize than iPhoto.
I'm not talking about the photographer workflow.
And I'm not talking about editing and all these great photo features, the search, and all the iLife environment. They are amazing.
When I'm iPhoto, I feel like a prisioner.
I can't open an album/folder/event alone just to take a look, without do lanch the iPhoto app with the all thousand photos together. And it's slow.
I can't use Quick Look there.
So, I'll use Finder for manage/crop/etc. But what's the best way to use iPhoto in my case? Put the best/key ones there to use in iLife/MobileMe? To do a more serious editing? I like the features: keywords/ratings/hidden photos/events... It would be cool this features in Finder.
    For example:
iMovie: Manage movies? NO. It's editng only.
iTunes: Manage music/small video/podcast...? OK. Editing the song? OK for tags/convert/artwork/equalizer... For music there's a GarageBand of course.
iPhoto: Manage photos? Yes and No.
I think Finder would kill iPhoto incoporating all the editing features in Preview and the rich manage in Finder.
Jobs said that no one care about iDVD anymore. They care about the web.
Using iMovie to export to MobileMe.
Maybe iPhoto become less important in a near future. With a better Finder+Preview Right?
Sorry for this long text with a short question.
    Thanks.

Your post demonstrates exactly why I keep saying that iPhoto is not the application for you.
It would be better an iPhoto organizing photos by words like when iTunes browse his music.
Why on earth would anyone want to organise photos by words? A list mode is entirely pointless in a Photo application. That's like having an old photo album organised with the photos facing inwards so you can read the back of the picture.
Again, this is a characteristic of a File browser. You don't want a Photo organiser, you want a file organiser.
And, in iPhoto, you can search by tags, effortlessly in either the search box or by using a Smart Album.
iPhoto always loads all that events and all the thumbs library to scroll, and I think it's overkill.
So, how is iPhoto to know which ones you want to work with today? Open a library, get the Library.
Would be better a Cover Flow option to browsing in Events.
You've obviously never tried scrubbing along the Event icon.
Imagine iTunes using Cover Flow mode all the time. It won't be too useful.
Many, many people do, including myself on a library of 20k tracks totalling more that 100 gigs, and find it very useful. Same with the Finder.
And if when iTunes Store starts to sell photos?
Why on earth would the iTunes store start to sell photos?
    My photos are not junk,
I didn't say there were. Read my post again.
When I said Finder to crop photos I mean Preview. But I feel in Finder. Because what's in Preview? A photo opened with a Preview's menubar and some cocoa APIs like adjustments. Not?
Oh, so you don't count Preview as an application. Fine. It is an application but you don't feel it. As you wish.
My point to you is very simple: Because of the way you want to organise your pics - using lists views and so on - iPhoto is not the application for you. Don't use it. But you keep writing things about the application that are untrue, and I'm aware that other folks search these forums and I don't want them to have inaccurate information about iPhoto.

  • How to use iPhoto with 1 photo library and 2 user accounts on 1 iMac ?

    Title says it all.
I don't want to have a double picture library, it takes enough space from my harddisk already.
My wife and I share the same camera too. We want to see the same pictures when using iPhoto.
Possible solution: Do I have to make a softlink from 1 user account to the photo lib that belongs to the other account ? [in Terminal:  ln /Users/.... etc.)
    (Yes, I'm an ex-Linux user)
    Thnx
    Fred4711

If you want to have the same data, do you need separate accounts? A surprising number of people think that must have separate ccounts and they really don't need to.
    Anyway:
For iPhoto 09 (version 8.0.2) and later:
    What you mean by 'share'.
If you want the other user to be able to see the pics, but not add to, change or alter your library, then enable Sharing in your iPhoto (Preferences -> Sharing), leave iPhoto running and use Fast User Switching to open the other account. In that account, enable 'Look For Shared Libraries'. Your Library will appear in the other source pane.
Any user can drag a pic from the Shared Library to their own in the iPhoto Window.
Remember iPhoto must be running in both accounts for this to work.
If you want the other user to have the same access to the library as you: to be able to add, edit, organise, keyword etc.
Quit iPhoto in both accounts. Move the Library to the Users / Shared Folder
(You can also use an external HD set to ignore permissions, a Disk Image or even partition your Hard Disk.)
In each account in turn: Double click on the Library to open it. (You may be asked to repair the Library Permissions.) From that point on, this will be the default library location. Both accounts will have full access to the library, in fact, both accounts will 'own' it.
However, there is a catch with this system and it is a significant one. iPhoto is not a multi-user app., it does not have the code to negotiate two users simultaneously writing to the database, and trying will cause db corruption. So only one user at a time, and back up, back up back up.

  • Update caption in iPhoto and push to iWeb

    scenario:
    1) i have photos imported to iPhoto and have created albums
    2) i have used iPhoto albums in iWeb photo albums
    3) the iPhoto captions are properly displayed in iWeb and its albums - except:
3b) when i update the captions in iPhoto - which i assume should be my "master" file for photos -- the captions are not pushed to iWeb like photo additions/deletions are.
is there a way to force an update from iPhoto to iWeb to pick up caption changes to my photos?
    thanks

If you want an automatically updated MMe gallery in one of your iWeb pages you can do it as follows:
1 - create and publish a MMe gallery from iPhoto. Use iPhoto to keep it updated.
2 - open the MMe gallery in your browser and get it's URL.
3 - in iWeb embed the gallery into your web page using iFrame code and an HTML snippet as seen in this demo page: MobileMe Galleries and Quicktime Movies
The demo uses the URL for the mosaic mode of the galley. You can use any of the available modes as the default to display in your web page. Granted it's a wee bit larger on the page than a gallery created in iWeb but it will be automatically updated whenever you update it with iPhoto.

  • Titles and captions in iphoto slideshows on ipad

I am using iphoto on the ipad.  Ive managed to add photos and music but want to professionalise my slideshow by adding some title pages and captions.  Dont seem to be able to find out how to do this?  I've clicked on ? But there doesn't seem to be any hints.

Well, Ive found the caption adder in edit, but what about title pages?  Can anyone help with this?

  • Is anyone using iPhoto having a problem with the slide show using shatter where it does not let you put a title over photo?

Is anyone using iPhoto having a problem with the slide show using shatter where it does not let you put a title over photo? It use to work but it no longer lets you place a title over the opening photo.

Is your signature still current?(iPhoto '08, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.4))    I can confirm this for iPhoto '11; Shatter will only show the text slide title between the slides. Ken Burns and Classic theme can still be set to overlay the caption and title directly over the slides.

  • I started to get duplicate files each time I use iPhoto browser, it used to be only on videos, now, on every picture I import from iPhoto.

I use iPhoto to I import my pictures from my iPhone or iPad. Only because of the ability to remove at once all the imported ones from the iPhone/iPad.
Each time I use the iPhoto browser in the import process.
Each time, I get a duplicate file when import videos. Two files, stacked. Now, I started to get the same on each picture. Two pictures, of each one imported from iPhoto.
I never edit them from iPhoto. The pictures or videos, just go from the iPhone, to iPhoto, to aperture. Never touched or edited.
Why, a I getting twice the pictures when they come to aperture?
I'm not an expert, I could use some help. My concern is that THIS DID NOT HAPPENED BEFORE, only on videos, now, it is for everything.
If someone can help, I would be very grateful.

    Hello,
You can think of the shift registers almost as local variables. They are used to store information from the previous iteration of the loop to the current iteration. In the example that srikrishnaNF posted, he has basicalyl implemented a state machine architecture to control the different options. Once the file path it set, it is saved for the next loop iterations within a shift register until it is updated with a new path. The first case structure determine whether you want to write to a file or not. The second case structure determine whether the user needs to be prompted for a new file path, or whether it is still writing to the same file. This is indicated by looking at the true and 1 case. Here, the user wants to write to a file and the file path has been selected in the true and 0 case. In the true and 0 case, the user has selected a file, the 0 has been changed to a 1, and you then enter the true and 1 case. In this case, the value is kept at 1 meaning that the user will not be prompted for a new file path as long as the write to file button remains true. Once the write to file button switched, you will enter the false case. This case resets the 1 to a 0 and will cause the user to enter the true and 0 case when the write to file button is clicked again.

  • HELP: How do I use iPhoto 08 to import images onto my iPhone 3G?

    Hi,
I was wondering how best to import images into my iPhone 3G for viewing.
Most of my image files are large high quality 2 -4 MB files.
Is there an easy way to downsize the files for viewing on the iPhone 3G? Does iPhoto have a setting specific for import/export use with the iPhone?
How do I set a specific photo as the phone's wallpaper and does it have to be specifically sized to use as wallpaper?
I have read the iPhone 3G manual but it was less than helpful just saying "Use iPhoto to import photos onto your iPhone"...

here is a thread with lots of discussion of this topic - http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1618079&tstart=105
In general you make album(s) of the photos you want on the iPhone and sync the album(s)

Make sure the drive is formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
    1. Quit iPhoto
    2. Copy the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
    3. Hold down the option (or alt) key while launching iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new location. From that point on this will be the default location of your library.
    4. Test the library and when you're sure all is well, trash the one on your internal HD to free up space.

  • Using iPhoto 08 with Photoshop elements

I am a recent Mac convert and I'm loving it.
However, I need some help understanding how best to use Photoshop Elements in conjunction with iPhoto 08. I was thinking I could use iPhoto to keep track of photos and do basic edits and link to other iLife apps etc, and use Photoshop to do more indepth editing.
I would like to know the most efficient way to open photos from inside iPhoto, into Photoshop. And how to get them back into iPhoto.
I realise I can drag a photo and create a copy on to the desk top and then open it with Photoshop, do some editing, save it to a/any folder, then import it back into iPhoto but…
    1) is there a better way to do this?
    2) I'm concerned with filling up my hard drive with multiple copies!
I'd be greatful for any help, Thanks

Using Photoshop (or Photoshop Elements) as Your Editor of Choice in iPhoto.
1 - select Photoshop as your editor of choice in iPhoto's General Preference Section's under the "Edit photo:" menu.
2 - double click on the thumbnail in iPhoto to open it in Photoshop. When you're finished editing click on the Save button. If you immediately get the JPEG Options window make your selection (Baseline standard seems to be the most compatible jpeg format) and click on the OK button. Your done.
3 - however, if you get the navigation window that indicates that PS wants to save it as a PS formatted file. You'll need to either select JPEG from the menu and save (top image) or click on the desktop in the Navigation window (bottom image) and save it to the desktop for importing as a new photo.
This method will let iPhoto know that the photo has been editied and will update the thumbnail file to reflect the edit..
If you want to use both iPhoto's editing mode and PS without having to go back and forth to the Preference pane, once you've selected PS as your editor of choice, reset the Preferences back to "Open in main window". That will let you either edit in iPhoto (double click on the thumbnail) or in PS (Control-click on the thumbnail and seledt "Edit in external editor" in the Contextual menu). This way you get the best of both worlds
    Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

I am using Iphoto 11 ver 9.4.3 on mac using oxs 10.8.5 i want to export calendar projects to an external hard drive. my goal is to store them in an external hard drive so it doesn't use up memory on the mac hard drive. is it possible to copy the specific projects without copying the entire library? what is the easiest way to do this? i have tried export and import but it didn't seem to work.

    What do you not understand?
You can duplicate the iPhoto library (command - D ) and delete everything except the project and its photos from the copy and move that
    Or
However the calendar takes very little space - it is simpy database entries - it is the photos in the calendar that take space - and for most people you would wnat to keep those photos in your library
you can use a photo in 50 calendars and it still is only one photo in your library - as I explained calenders do not exist as such - they are simply database entries telling iPhotop how to display the calendar - they take almost no space at all

  • I to use iphoto library manager to save corrupted iphoto and each time it saves some and the first time it brings up iphoto, iphone goes into "not responding" mode.  Using mac book pro, iphoto 9.5.1, and maverick 10.9.2.

I've had issues with my iPhoto "not responding" and as a result I am attempting to save my photos to an external hard drive using iPhoto library Manager but each time I start the program it saves some, and then when it starts iPhoto, iPhoto then goes into not responding mode. Using mac book pro, iphoto 9.5.1, and maverick 10.9.2. I have completed all of the photo library first aid steps several times, but it makes no difference, iphoto eventually goes to "not responding."  Initial issues started with Time Machine back ups stopping because of iphoto. Thanks......

Do you have a back up?
If you're just trying to recover the photos you can do that much more simply:
Go to your Pictures Folder and find the iPhoto Library there. Right (or Control-) Click on the icon and select 'Show Package Contents'. A finder window will open with the Library exposed.
Look there for a Folder called 'Originals' or 'Masters'. (varies according to the version of iPhoto)
Your photos are inside - these are the originals as imported from your camera.
