Writing in Hindi on Mac OSX 10.6.8

Not able to type in Hindi font, inspite of checking 'Devnagari' through system preferences/ language and text. On microsoft word, it does not come out in Hindi/ devnagari, but just as some blocks. I tried converting to different fonts, but not useful.
Can someone help please?

You could install Windows on your Mac (using Bootcamp or one of the virtual machine apps) and then run MS Word for Windows.
But why not just use OpenOffice for Mac, which is an Office clone?

You might want to ask MS why after 13 years of requests they have not been able to make MS Word for Mac work with Indic scripts or Arabic/Hebrew. I think either their programmers are not very good or they just don't want to invest resources to provide an opportunity for MS Word users in these countries to switch from Windows to Mac.

Mac OSX wont reognise my internal hard disk drive

I have a problem where for some reason when I start up my Macbook Pro (intel core duo) it does not detect the internal hard disk drive at all. I have run a hardware test and it shows no problems whatsoever. I have tried resetting the PRAM etc and to no avail. Yesterday the system hung and I tried to force quit and it wouldn't do anything so eventually I held down the power key and when it tried to reboot this is the problem I was faced with (it would boot up with the "no entry" sign). I accepted complete defeat and went to completely re-install OSX however it doesn't even show the internal hard drive when I wait for it to give me install destinations. I had tried seeing the hard drive through disk utility however it only shows the install DVD and that's it in the sidebar. I resigned myself further to thinking either the logic board or the HDD had packed in all and I took it round to my brother in law to see if there is anything he could do without opening the machine (he is Oxford educated and writes programmes etc so is very knowledgable), now this is the part that has miffed us both, he started it up using a Linux disc and once running, Linux see's the hard drive with no problems. He has been able to access the HDD with absolutely no problems under Linux both reading and writing to it. I even took my Mac Mini round and he booted them both up in Linux and completely copied Mac OSX from the mini to the macbook pro but still when I try booting up its as if the HDD isn't even there. Why can Linux see the drive and not Mac OSX? Please don't be affraid to get very technical in your answers as they may mean nothing to me but will probably all make sense to my brother in Law. Any sugestions at all would be greatly accepted.

You guys may have made a big error cloning the Mini HD into the MBP. They both have very different drivers and hardware settings and their OS X versions are customized to fit the hardware. That is why each mac comes with it's own version of OS X and their backup disks. That's a reason why it did not work.
Ok, so now that you do not have any of the original info on the MBP try the following:
Use linux to scan the disk surface & repair any problems.
Reformat the drive as DOS or FAT 32. (I wouldn't go into any linux specific format unless you can "Apple" format it, which I don't think linux has that option.)
Now, the MBP should be able to see it's drive...
boot from the OS X DVD , from the Utilities menu choose Disk Utilities, partition the drive as GUI file system (in case the linux format made the drive a "system boot record", you do not want that... )
Then format the drive as "OS X Extended Journaled"
Now go back to install and install your original basic set of OS X (the factory default).
*If nothing works, please do take your MBP to the Apple store or to a certified tech before you do more damage to the drive and it becomes unusable ...*

I have a unwrapped copy of Mac OSX Tiger and i don't know what to do with it

So i don't have a Macpowerbook and i have a copy of mac osx tiger. It was originally my mom's dad's. How ever he has passed away and my mom's mom wants us to sell the osx tiger. What should i do?

If it is a grey colored disc then it is machine specific and only useful to somebody who has the machine model for which it was made. If it is black then it is a retail install disc.
2 years ago you could have sold a retail disc at a premium price. Now I am not so sure. Tiger is now 4th generation behind Lion, Snow Leopard and Leopard. Apple stopped supporting Tiger years ago and fewer and fewer other software packages are being issued that still run on Tiger. Firefox stopped supporting Tiger, Flash (used on just about every web site out there) is no longer being updated, etc. I think the writing is on the wall. One of my favorite web sites that uses Flash stopped working for me yesterday.
A machine specific disc is really handy for somebody who has that machine and completely useless to anybody who doesn't.
The best thing to do is go on e-bay and see what is actually being paid (not asked) for Tiger, remembering to make sure it matches the copy you have. If you do decide to sell it, make sure you tell the purchaser exactly which model disc it is. We've seen many people on here who bought a disc only to find it wouldn't install on their computer.

Raw sockets with IP headers in mac osx

I am trying to send IP packets through a raw socket (SOCK_RAW) on my mac (osx 10.6), and always get an "Invalid Argument" error. I have tried with IPPROTO_RAW, IPPROTO_UDP, and IPPROTO_DIVERT (which should also send raw packets). When using _RAW or _UDP, I also set the socket option for including ip headers with setsockopt(.., IP_HDRINCL, ..). Has anyone successfully sent IP packets with a raw socket on a mac that includes IP headers? Any example code I can use as a reference? Thanks!

Well, in case anyone ever has the same issue, the only way I was able to inject packets back with my own IP headers was by writing to a bpf socket, which is not the prettiest way, but works. I am still interested in seeing IP_HDRINCL work on a raw socket, so if anyone has an example that works, please post!

Adobe Reader 9 Silent Install Mac OSX Leopard

When I try to install the pkg silently (I want to distribute it on all our machines) nothing seems to happen. I'm running leopard on intel.

I am writing a program for face detection on mac osx and I am using OpenCV. I am following the steps given on this link:

There are three codes given for this program. The first code runs smoothly. In the second code there is no error in the compilation, it is successful. But it is not showing any output. As per the program it should open a new window. That window would store the picture taken from the camera.

I'm writing a lot on MW word. I use a desktop, a jump drive, and i-disk. Is there a way to have either mac osx or MW word save the same file to all three sites?

no. you either have to save to all 3 places by hand or use some sort of syncing software like chronosync to sync between folders you are saving to.

Trouble reading user input in Mac OSX

Hi, I am writing a program in Java (1.5) for Mac OSX that requires the user to setup files and settings, then a new frame opens with a blank screen and waits for user input (a key press) to begin. I have a setup screen that works fine (seperate frame) and triggers the blank screen and the rest of the program fine as well. The problem is when I try to have the program pause for user input. For some reason, this thread is no longer responding to user input at all. I have tried with a KeyListener Interface and with System.in.read() as well as BufferedReaders, etc and there are no keypresses registered at all.
Another object does create a seperate thread to deal with closing down Quicktime elements, but the keypresses are not registering even when that thread has not been called.
Can anyone tell me what might be the problem? Is there an issue with multiple frames interfering with the KeyListener? I can post the code, if you'd like, but it's pretty involved.
Any help greatly appreciated!

Actually, this still isn't working. I'm posting the program class (there are several supporting classes that are not in this post - SetUp opens a SetUp frame and gathers information, then calls MTSNewSwing. Start movie places a Quicktime Component into a Panel, and QTSessionCheck starts a thread that check to make sure that QT sessions are closed when neccessary). KeyPresses are stll not being registered at all.

Why can't I open a GarageBand recording on my iPhone in GarageBand on Mac OSX?

I recorded an acoustic performance of my vocal quart last night on an iPhone running GarageBand 2.0.1 on iOS 7.1.2. But I can't open it in GarageBand 11 (6.0.5) on Mac OSX 10.9.5. What gives?
Not only will it not open (and the software on my Mac platform is way more recent than on my iPhone, so you'd think it would be upward compatible), but when I try to open this iOS-created file on the Mac, it asks me where I want to save it ... it's already saved, I'm just trying to open it.
I've looked at the reviews for the latest GarageBand, which it tells me I need to upgrade to, and they are terrible! Many report that they wish they hadn't upgraded and that they could get back to an older version of GarageBand on their Mac.
Does this mean I'm stuck and the two GarageBand platforms are not compatible and that I won't be able to open this file? ... other thanes an mp3 in iTunes ...

it sounds like it's opening fine, but you're just not letting it finish.
it's asking you to save a version of the song for the mac; if it saved over the original file, it could no longer be opened on the iOS device, if you needed to alter something later

Firefox no longer working with Mac OSX 10.4.11

i'm using Mac OSX 10.4.11 and Firefox 3.6.12. As i understand it any of ur upgrades no longer work with this computer system. ( I tried to upgrade last week and ur site said upgrades no available gfor my platform version. Last week every time i conducted a search (default Google) i was redirected to http://search.creativecommons.org/?q=crossword+puzzles&sourceid=Mozilla-search.what gives? Have I been hijacked? also sites that I use daily are clipped and entire pages are smaller than usual . see www.shockwave.com

When you have a problem with one particular site, a good "first thing to try" is clearing your Firefox cache and deleting your saved cookies for the site.
(1) Bypass Firefox's Cache
Use Cmd+Shift+r to reload the page fresh from the server.
(You also can clear Firefox's cache completely using:
Firefox > Preferences > Advanced
On the Network mini-tab > Cached Web Content : "Clear Now")
(2) Remove the site's cookies (save any pending work first). While viewing a page on the site:
Tools > Page Info > Security > "View Cookies"
Then try reloading the page. Does that help?
If you open about:crashes, you should get links to online crash reports. You could post some of the crash IDs for review by volunteers here.
Given the timing, another issue might be some ads or media in the page. There are some add-ons to block such things...

I am totally happy with the way iPhoto organizes my photos and how I can work with iMovie to create slide shows with music from iTunes, etc.
I have been shooting mostly high resolution jpegs and I continue to learn more and more about photography, post processing etc. I realize that the small adjustments I can make in iPhoto are good, and are adequate most of the time. However, a have started to experiment with shooting RAW images and would like to go the next step, ie. post processing.I am totally technically challenged and need SIMPLE, INTUITIVE programs and am certainly NOT anywhere ready for Photoshop CS whatever!
After having these programs sit on my computer, I decided to try to see if I could figure them out. When I opened Aperture, this is what first comes up.

I have heard horror stories about moving your entire library to Aperture, ending up with 2 libraries, etc. etc. hence my previous reluctance in attempting Aperture. In addition, many of my photography friends are saying: Go with Lightroom 3.....you’ll love it!
So here is my dilemma. I don’t want to mess around with my iPhoto library. All I want to be able to do, is to isolate a few photos, export them to Aperture, Elements, and work on them there, then bring them back into iPhoto.
Can I do this? Should I forget about Aperture and Elements and look at purchasing yet another program like Lightroom?

Export those few photos via the File ➙ Export ➙ File Export menu option with Kind = Original to the Desktop. Then import them into the Aperture library. That would keep one copy in your iPhoto library and another in your Aperture library to edit, etc.
You can use Photoshop Elements 9 from within iPhoto as your editor of choice. However, if you edit a raw file in iPhoto with PSE9 the resulting edited version must be saved outside the iPhoto Library and imported back in as a new file. For editing jpegs just do a Save (not a Save As) and it all will be kept within iPhoto.
Using Photoshop or Photoshop Elements as Your Editor of Choice in iPhoto.
1 - select Photoshop or Photoshop Elememts as your editor of choice in iPhoto's General Preference Section's under the "Edit photo:" menu.
2 - double click on the thumbnail in iPhoto to open it in Photoshop. When you're finished editing click on the Save button. If you immediately get the JPEG Options window make your selection (Baseline standard seems to be the most compatible jpeg format) and click on the OK button. Your done.
3 - however, if you get the navigation window
that indicates that PS wants to save it as a PS formatted file. You'll need to either select JPEG from the menu and save (top image) or click on the desktop in the Navigation window (bottom image) and save it to the desktop for importing as a new photo.
This method will let iPhoto know that the photo has been editied and will update the thumbnail file to reflect the edit..
NOTE: With Photoshop Elements the Saving File preferences should be configured as shown:
I also suggest the Maximize PSD File Compatabilty be set to Always. In PSE’s General preference pane set the Color Picker to Apple as shown:
Note: to switch between iPhoto and PS or PSE as the editor of choice Control (right)-click on the thumbnail and select either Edit in iPhoto or Edit in External Editor from the contextual menu. If you use iPhoto to edit more than PSE re-select iPhoto in the iPhoto General preference pane. Then iPhoto will be the default editor and you can use the contextual menu to select PSE for your editor when desired.

Canon Vixia HV30 capture issue on CS6 (Mac OSX)

This might be (hopefully) something in setup, but under Mac OSX Lion (10.7.4) / Premiere CS6, i am unable to capture video from my Canon Vixia HV30 - it's either i get a monstruous noise or simply get a 'capture device offline' message.
No one ever had a similar problem even withanother cam here? I posted weeks ago but never got any reply.
Am using the same cam under Windows with Premiere CS4 and never faced such an issue.
Matter of some sort of CODEC ? Does not seem to require any specific driver for Mac based on Canon website.
Any suggestion?

Solved... (Almost!)
Someone pointed out that Canon has a software (they said there was no driver for Mac OS X so I had stopped looking...) But if it may help others, there is a ''CameraWindow'' for Mac OS X 10.6, 10.7 and 10.8 available.
As soon as I installed it, I could capture both from Adobe Premiere CS6 and iMovie.
One problem remaining though : the noise (feedback-like) that gets out from... the system's sound card ! (when capture is ongoing). I have to shut down the volume completely. Never had this issue under Windows, need to figure out why this happens now.

Mac OSX Mountain Lion crashes randomly.

I've made a clean install of Mac OSX Mountain Lion in my 15" Macbook Pro late 2009 laptop. I kept reciving these intermittent lock ups and then the Macbook pro reboots (while thankfully saving whatever it needed to save before it reboots) by itself with a message saying that the macbook pro had a problem and had to restart automatically. Did any of you have the same problem? and if so do you have a solution to fix it?
