Writing pad best suited for Mac.

Hey Everyone,
I have an IMac G6,1 Intel Core 2 Duo.
This is my first time owning a desk top computer...I've only ever used powerbooks...I've also never used a mouse extensively...Well, after 3 months of intensive computer use, I'm getting shooting pains in my wrist. These are the first signs of carpel tunnel...Sigh.
I'm in the market for a writing pad. I'm aware of the Wacom Intuit writing pad...Is anyone familiar with this pad? Can anyone suggest the writing pad best suited for Mac?
Appreciate the help,
SB

Hi SB!
Sorry, no help with a writing pad.
But, I've had the same wrist pains, and mine came from using the keyboard and mouse on a regular height desk top of 28.5 to 30 inches above floor level, along with regular height chairs. Try using a typewriter stand or calculator stand height of about 27.5 inches instead, for your keyboard and mouse. That's why computer desks have a separate level built-in. Another alternative, that I'm able to use successfully, may be to raise the height of the seat on which you sit, best done not with an actual desk that has a center drawer, but with a table (or a desk with only drawers off to the sides). The key is that your wrists must be able to relax even while typing.

I am a new mac user and having trouble finding the best software for mac.  Windows for mac and parallels desktop have been recommended to me.  There is such a significant price difference between the two, is there a difference in what they offer? Are there any other software options for mac that I should be looking into?

Windows is a operating system from Microsoft, that costs more money.
OS X is the operating system on your Mac, it came free with the Mac you bought.
Parallels and VMFusion are paid virtual machine software that can run other operating systems like a programs inside other operating systems, there is a performance penalty, but it's easier for new users and those who don't need the full power of the hardware.
There is also VirtualBox, it's free virtual machine software with less features, but doesn't suffer from forcing you to upgrade for more money like the commercial versions do.
Virtual Machine software has the ability to run other operating systems and a large portion of their software, which makes it attractive.
There is Apple's BootCamp, it's also free, which allows one to section their boot drive space (called a partition) and install Windows 7 (only) there, this way one can directly boot a Mac into Windows 7 for better performance for 3D games and other heavy CPU uses. Although it's easy, it can be a lot more problematic if there is a problem.
So you have those choices to run plenty of software, from Windows based programs, to Mac ones to Linux ones too.
Windows in BootCamp or Virtual Machine?

I have never heard of that either. Do you need to open/edit Microsoft Office documents? If so, I would recommend you give NeoOffice a try first. It's based on the free OpenOffice, but does not require you to install Apple's X11 windowing system first. It's actually worked pretty well for me. If you find that NeoOffice does not meet your needs, then I would save-up to buy a full copy of Microsoft Office for the Mac.

Mac's use a Unix based operating system and other controls that make it hostile for viruses to thrive.
However it's possible to carry Windows viruses to other Windows machines by a Mac, also there might be some corruption if your dealing with a lot of Windows files.
So all you really need is a scanner to run when you need it, something like the free ClamXav is good.
    http://www.clamxav.com/
Apple includes a anti-trojan/malicious program type anti-malware service built into all latest versions of OS X, it works and updates in the background.
There has been many attempts at trying to "trojan" or trick Mac users into installing rogue software on web pages. If you see soemthing like this, best to just Force Quit the browser by clicking on the Finder and selecting Force Quit from the menu.
A alternative browser like Firefox will offer more protection.
If you run your typical day to day operations on a Mac in what's called "Standard User", with a separate Admin User account, you'll need to update your Apple Menu > Software Update and your Apple Menu > System Preferences > Security > toggle the "Automatically Update Safe Downloads List" check box on/off about once a week.
Standard User provides more security restrictions, but is also designed not to intrude into those who are less capable use of the computer.
Third party plugins for your browser like Flash and Silverlight (used on Netflix) require a once a week check for updates.
Use a free service like the Mozilla browser check here:
    https://www.mozilla.com/en-US/plugincheck/
Always back up your personal data and never install programs that your not 100% you trust the source of.
If you have any questions or suspicions, simply ask the opinions of the more senior users here on this forum.
Good advice is not to install any anti-virus like Norton that demands the operating system remain a consistent state. Apple changes things all the time, which breaks software like Norton or OS X itself when a Software Update occurs.
There are two great free 3D games, simply search for: Nexiuz Classic and Cube 2 Sauerbraten.

Good Luck and enjoy your Mac.

  • I need a digital voice recorder best suited for recording my voice for chorus and quartet rehearsals

I'm looking for a small digital Sony voice recorder best suited for recording singing for chorus and quartet rehearsals.  I received model ICD-AX412 but don't think that's the right one for this. I found a couple other models PCMD50 and PCMM10 online but want to know what to get!

    Hello Carol,
    Welcome to Sony Community.
When recording a chorus place the IC recorder on a table approximately 2 to 3 meters (80 to 120 in.) from the performer(s).
Set up the IC recorder with the display window facing up, and with the built-in microphones pointing towards the sound source.
Refer to page # 34 of the Manual (ICD-AX412) about placing the IC Recorder for recording chorus.
Also, select the Recording scene as “Lecture” for recording a chorus lesson.
You can refer to page # 32 and 33 of the Manual to select the recording scene.
Please mark it as "Accepted Solution" if you find this information useful.
    Regards,
    Colby

  • Software ovi suite for mac

    hi,
basically i want to make nokia e7 works as modem to my laptop MAC.
since that,i've been understand to download nokia ovi suite so that i can utilize nokia e7 as modem. btw, until now i still didnt find where can i get software ovi suite for MAC?in web nokia, there're software ovi.suite but it was for WINDOWS.
    can somebody help me?
    tq

Fortunately that's pretty easy with a Nokia, just plug your Nokia with the usb cable to your mac, Mac OS will notifiy you to create a modem configuration, that will be something like this:
In the modem Manufacter: you choose Nokia, then Model: GPRS (GSM/3G), and on the APN: you should put the same address as you find in your phone internet configuration, for example in Vodafone Portugal is: internet.vodafone.pt
You can find your phone internte connection configuration on your Nokia in a similiar place like this: Definitions -> Connectivity -> Destinations ->Internet -> then you will find the name of your operator probably, just press options and edit -> (your must close all connections to edit first, just put your phone in offline in the profiles menu (silent, office, outdoors etc), when your internet config opens you will see Access Point Name: example: internet.vodafone.pt that's probably the only data you will need, just put in Mac OS X as said previously!
Other alternative with not cables involved is to use JoikuSpot app, with this app you can share your phone internet connection with any computer with WiFi, in a nutshell your phone will act as an WiFi Internet Acess Point.
    http://www.joiku.com/
Just keep in mind that if your phone charges by usb, the cable solution is more battery friendly to your phone, but not for your Notebook

  • Best Safari for Mac OS 10.4. ......

    -
    Some naivete involved here.
More incidentally, contextually, .. I'd lost general access to my Finder, .. and so, with this, and with having had a re-installation done, of my main OS. - at the time, 10.3.9, and now, 10.4, ...
.. at this point, I'm trying to figure just what "Safari" - best, that I might perhaps be able to upgrade to. - .. from v 2.0 (412)
@ I've found a few different sources for versions of Sarfari that fit with Mac OSs .. "10.4.1" and 10.4.11". ..... Basic question - additional: Are these pretty much the same as "10.4", or do I need to do some slight upgrading of the OS that I just got. ?
    richard583a

Yes, you should upgrade to 10.4.11.
There are no guarantees, but following this procedure when installing updates and upgrades on your Mac, or even re-installing them, will go a long way towards avoiding unpleasant after effects and ‘post-update stress disorder’.
It is also worth noting that it is an extreme rarity for updates to cause upsets to your system, as they have all been extensively beta-tested, but they may well reveal pre-existing ones, particularly those of which you may have been unaware. If you are actually aware of any glitches, make sure they are fixed before proceeding further.
So before you do anything else:
If you can, make a full backup first to an external hard disk. Ideally you should always have a bootable clone of your system that enables you to revert to the previous pre-update state.
Turn off sleep mode for both screen and hard disk.
Disconnect all peripherals except your keyboard and mouse.
    1. Repair Permissions (in Disk Utility)
    2. Verify the state of your hard disk using Disk Utility. If any faults are reported, restart from your install disk (holding down the C key), go to Disk Utility, and repair your startup disk. Restart again to get back to your startup disk.
At least you can now be reasonably certain that your system does not contain any obvious faults that might cause an update/upgrade to fail.
    3. Download the correct version of the COMBO update from the Apple download site. If your car runs on gasoline you would not want to fill the tank with diesel, so don’t try to install the PPC updater on an Intel Mac!
The 10.4.11 Combo Updater for PPC Macs is here: http://support.apple.com/downloads/MacOS_X_10_4_11_Combo_Update__PPC
And for Intel Macs: http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/apple/macosx_updates/macosx10411comboupdat eintel.html
If you prefer to download updates via Software Update in the Apple menu (which would ensure that the correct version for your Mac was being downloaded), it is not recommended to allow SU to install major (or even minor) updates automatically. Set Software Update to just download the updater without immediately installing it. There is always the possibility that the combined download and install (which can be a lengthy process) might be interrupted by a power outage or your cat walking across the keyboard, and an interrupted install will almost certainly cause havoc. Once it is downloaded, you can install at a time that suits you. You should make a backup copy of the updater on a CD in case you ever need a reinstall.
Full details about the 10.4.11 update here: http://support.apple.com/kb/TA24901?viewlocale=en_US
More information on using Software Updater here:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TA24901?viewlocale=en_US
Using the Combo updater ensures that all system files changed since the original 10.4.0 are included, and any that may have been missed out or subsequently damaged will be repaired. The Delta updater, although a temptingly smaller download, only takes you from the previous version to the new one, i.e. for example from 10.4.10 to 10.4.11. Software Update will generally download the Delta updater only. The preferable Combo updater needs to be downloaded from Apple's download site.
    Now proceed as follows:
    4. Close all applications.
    5. Unplug all peripherals except your keyboard and mouse.
    6. Install the update/upgrade. Do not under any circumstances interrupt this procedure. Do not do anything else on your computer while it is installing. Be patient.
    7. When it ask for a restart to complete the installation, click restart. This can take longer than normal, there are probably thousands of files to overwrite and place in the correct location. Do nothing while this is going on.
    8. Once your Mac is awake, repair permissions again, and you should be good to go!
If your Mac seems slightly sluggish or ‘different’, perform a second restart. It can’t hurt and is sometimes efficacious!
    9. Open a few of your most used applications and check that all is OK. In this connection please remember that not all manufacturers of third party applications and plug-ins, add-ons, haxies etc, will have had time to do any necessary rewrites to their software to make them compliant with the latest version of your operating system. Give them a weeks or two while you regularly check their websites for updates. This applies particularly to plug-ins for Safari 3.
N.B. Do not attempt to install two different updates at the same time as each may have different routines and requirements. Follow the above recommendations for each update in turn.
Lastly, Apple's own article on the subject of Software Update may also be useful reading:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106695
If you are updating Safari (or just have):
Input Managers from third parties can do as much harm as good. They use a security loophole to reach right into your applications' code and change that code as the application starts up. If you have installed an OS update and Safari is crashing, the very first thing to do is clear out your InputManagers folders (both in your own Library and in the top-level /Library), log out and log back in, and try again.
So, disable all third party add-ons before updating Safari, as they may not have been updated yet for the new version. Add them back one by one. If something goes awry, remove it again and check on the software manufacturer's website for news of an update to match your version of Safari. Remember: Tiger up to 10.4.10 used Safari 2.0.4 or, if you downloaded it, Safari 3.0.3 beta. Safari 10.4.11 used Safari 3.0.4 which was not a beta. If Safari 3.1.2 on 10.4.11 is not the fastest browser you have ever used, then something is wrong!
Moreover, trying to revert to Safari 3.0.4 (or worse still, version 2) when running 10.4.11 or 10.5 can have repercussions, as Safari 3.1.1 uses a completely different webkit on which other applications like iChat, Mail and Dashboard Widgets etc also rely, and may entail you having to reinstall an earlier operating system.
Most errors reported here after an update are due to an unrepaired or undetected inherent fault in the system, and/or a third party ad-on. Two such add-on that have been frequently mentioned here for causing such problems are Piclens and Pithhelmet. If you have them, trash them.
Additional tips on software installation here:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106692
To reiterate, Input Managers reach right into an application and alter its code. This puts the behavior of the affected application outside the control and responsibility of its developers: a recipe for problems. That's not to say that issues absolutely will ensue as a result of Input Managers, but you, as a user, must decide. If the functionality of a specific Input Manager or set thereof is really important to you, you may well choose to assume the associated risk.
Again, the advice is to remove all Input Managers from the following directories:
    • /Library/InputManagers
    • ~/Library/InputManagers
especially prior to system updates (they can always be added back one-by-one later).
Safari 3 would probably suit your Mac best.

  • Best webcam for Mac mini core solo?

What is the best webcam to use for my Mac Mini with an older display - is MacAlly icecam 2 sufficient? and i'm still on 10.4.11. Many thanks for your kind responses.

I've been looking into webcams for my mini and have noticed that some webcams whilst the video works, the sound doesn't. I have an old webcam which my wife uses on our windows box, and I got it working on my mac using the Macam drivers http://webcam-osx.sourceforge.net/ The only problem was that the microphone wasn't supported, a recurring trend!! • IMac - what graphic card best suited for Aperture???

Hi, I'm considering buying the 24" iMac to use with Aperture 2.1.2, however it comes with the option
    of two graphics cards:
    ATI Radeon HD 2600 PRO w/256MB GDDR3
    NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GS w/512MB GDDR3
I don't play any games, so what I want is the best card for use with Aperture (and I guess core image?).
From what I can see at barefeats.com its not necessarily the biggest card which is the best, since they are often optimized for games and not so much 2d graphics.
Right now I use Aperture on my 2.2Ghz MacBook Pro with 128Mb Nvidia card, and its not the fastest combo at all.
    What is your opinion?
    Best,
    Peter

AFAIK the Barefeats commentary <http://barefeats.com/imp01.html> seems accurate and suggests that the 2600 card is best value.
If one is buying a new desktop box, iMacs are much more limiting to Aperture performance than Mac Pros, even a 2006 MP. So the only reason to consider an iMac is price. Once we acknowledge that the setup build is about accepting lesser Aperture performance to achieve lower price, the significance of the $150 extra for the 8800 card becomes more apparent. IMO if one is price-constrained to buying an iMac then the $150 that might have gone to an 8800 card is better spent on adding the necessary maximum RAM and FW800 external hard drive(s).
