Writing Programs for Intel Mac?

I am a writer of young adult fiction novels.
I want to get a writing program for my new Intel based iMac.
Should I spend $150 for Microsoft Word and get a bunch of other apps I don't use and won't need?
Or, is there one, online, that is free or inexpensive that will allow me to write my stories and create readable files for other computers as well as PDFs?

There are SO VERY many companies that make wonderful desktop publishing programs you have never heard of.
Or, better still, go to <www.mause.ca > and download some of the 2007 DoubleClick newsletters: look for reviews of DesktopPublisher Pro, Ready,Set,Go!, QuarkXPress 7, Swift Publisher, MLayout, RagTime & RagTime Solo, Mariner Write, and others. For a while they had a few reviews of excellent desktop publishing articles in every issue.

Need an audio routing utility for intel mac

hi
i would like to know if there is a utility for intel macs which will allow me to specify which audio output is used by specific applications. to be more specific i would like itunes, DVD player, Eye TV applications output to go via the digital output on my Mac Pro which is linked to my Hifi, and everything else (system sound effects, iChat, etc) to go via the analog output which is linked to small PC speakers.
I am aware of the 'Detour' plugin, which sadly doesn't work on intel Macs, and basically am looking for a similar application for intel Macs

I might have an answer. After trying every audio routing program I could find, I poked around in Nicecast. I found a deeply buried menu for an output choice of default or 1/2. It was on default so I chose 1 for left and 2 for right and this accomplished what I need. Until I quit the programs. Then I was back to square 1. I disabled Detour and tried a currently supported program, Jack. jack would not even load the currently running programs to be able to route them. So I went back to Detour and had to add Nicecast to it's list. All is well, I hope
In fact I tried another application at the same time and Detour did what it was supposed to, so it looks like my problem might have been with Nicecast all along, but I set the output back to default and it still worked. Maybe after some updates I just need to reset all the preferences? But Detour has not been supported since 2005 and Jack seems useless.

"Gift Card" is sometimes called a tacky gift, but if it allows the other person to get whatever they want it works.
Besides, anything purchased through App Store is usually "All Sales Final", so I think iTunes card is a good idea.

Windows media player for intel macs?

im so bumbed that windows media player wont run on intel macs...does anyone know when they plan on getting it for intel macs!..i need it!...Flip4mac *****...the formats that it plays i have not come across yet..and thats even if its working properly...i think im gunna uninstall that actually....Please I need windows media player!!!...anyone know anything about it?

That being the case if it won't run I'd do the "regular drill": Repair Permissions, download & run Onyx or Cocktail, consider booting from your install DVD and running Disk Repair. If still no joy post back.

i have just done the update for intel mac- i can note that all windows have a steel grey finish now- i just wanted to check with others if they have the sasme finish or is it a problem with my mac

PlainTextPaste for Intel Mac?

I frequently need to copy many file names into an email. I had been using PlainTextPaste, but that does not run on the Intel Macs. Now, when I select more than one file in the Finder, copy, and paste into an email, the actual files themselves get pasted in, and not the names. Does anyone know of another product like PlainTextPaste for Intel Macs, or is there already a way to get the result I want that I don't know about?

Create a new document in TextEdit, choose Make Plain Text from the Format menu, paste the list into it, and then copy it from there.

Predictive typing program for the Mac?

Has anyone heard of a predictive typing program for the Mac?
I am looking for a computer program for typing that "guesses" what word you want based on the first few letters. I have trouble typing because of physical disabilities. Voice recognition is a no go (I also have trouble with my voice).
I know cell phones have this for texting, but I've never seen it for a regular computer. An application I could type in right on my Mac, then cut and paste to other applications like Word, email, etc. Apparently there is a program called "Penfriend" for the PC that does exactly this, but I'm having trouble finding anything Mac-compatible.
Has anyone heard of a company that provides this kind of software? Any ideas on which discussion board might know?

Were you using the mouse to select words? You can set
hotkeys so you can do it with the keyboard if that
would be easier - you can use a sequence like
option-1,option-2, etc., or whatever else you can
type easily.
I tried both selecting words with the mouse, and with the coded numbers on the keyboard... I think this may be a problem for me with any predictive typing program, the whole needing-to-pick-up-your-hand thing. KeyStrokes seems about as good as you're going to get (honestly, all those languages, like magic). Maybe with a different keyboard, if I can place the numbers closer to the letters. I'll keep trying.

YES, there is. It is built into Mac OS X. All you need to do to use it is keep Mac OS X up-to-date.
This built-in Anti-Virus works better and is far less obtrusive than any third-party stuff you can add on. Most of the third-party anti-Virus add-ons are JUNK.
But Viruses, while they cannot be ignored, are actually quite rare on the Mac. If you have a flashy anti-Virus scan that reminds you it is there by slowing down your Mac and visibly scanning things, you can lull yourself into thinking you are protected, but you are NOT!
A much more serious problem is malware, and most malware requires you to help (or at least be complicit) to get onto your Mac. Nothing can replace your constant Vigilance. They ARE out to get you, and steal your financial data, and take over your Mac.

Don't visit Torrent sites, and don't download software from third-party sites.

Best financial software for Intel Macs

I see to my disgust that Intuit just released a new version of Quicken that is not universal binary. That being the case, what is the best home financial software for Intel Macs?

Just to be sure I am understanding you - you are saying you are miffed because Quicken missed the chance to go Universal Binary. That is understandable, but I just wanted to make sure you knew that it still runs on Intel macs.
I am running the newest release on my Macbook and to be honest Quicken just isn't one of those apps that is going to benefit from more speed.
My frustration has always been that Quicken dumbs down the functionality for the Mac version. Still the case with this last release.
That said, Quicken is still the best buy for my money (sorry couldn't resist!) and runs well via on the Intel macs.
The best solution and the one I am moving toward is to load XP on Parallels and run the PC version of Quicken that way.
Best of all worlds I would say.

Shutterfly Export Assistant for Intel Macs

After successfully downloading/installing Shutterfly's Export Assistant plugin for iPhoto 6.0.5 I soon realized that the "Shutterfly" tab was missing from the iPhoto File/Export menu. Searching Apple's Discussions I found posts of Jan '06 that say that Shutterfly currently does not support this plugin for Intel Macs. In fact, one of the posts gave a link to a Shutterfly page (http://www.shutterfly.com/downloads/sys_req.jsp?sw=osx) which unfortunately states, "Note: New Macintosh computers using an Intel processor are not yet supported." Bummer. I sent email to Shutterfly requesting when their plugin will work. In the meanwhile, does anyone have current informtion that can be shared on this topic? Thanks!

Here is the response from Shutterfly on how to get their Shutterfly Export Assistant for iPhoto on Intel Macs to work. I personally haven't had time to try this yet but plan to soon.

You can certainly try to use the plug-in, but be aware that it may only function for the main (root) user on the Mac by default.
To fix this, you need to go to the iphoto icon in applications, apple/click get info. go to the plug-in section, select the Shutterfly plug-in, click ownership and change it to everyone as opposed to a particular user. This will solve the problem.
Also please note that, there are two versions one for Intel Macs and one for Power PC Macs uninstall the one you currently have installed then reboot your computer go back and redownload the upload assistant and make sure you have the correct version for the processor your using. If you still find you are have these issues please give us a call at (800) 986-1065 and ask to be transferred to technical escalation so we can help you further. Shutterfly iPhoto Export Assistant - for INTEL Macs

I have twice followed the directions on the shutterfly site -

. I have uninstalled and reinstalled the plugin. It appears in my list of plugins and is checked when I go through the applications folder and get info on iPhoto. Still, when I select photos and click on export NOTHING happens - no tabs, no nothing. Suggestions?

I just got off the phone with Shutterfly tier 2 support and was told that the current Export Assistant for Intel Macs will not work with OS X version 10.4.8.
It seems to me that since 10.4.8 has been out way before the Intel compatible iPhoto Export Assistant for Shutterfly they might have tested it with the latest version of OS X. Also, there is no mention of compatability issues on the Shutterfly "Free Software" page, even though they are aware of the issue.
Additionally, the Shutterfly support pages only suggest uninstalling and reinstalling the plug-in, again with no mention of the fact that it does not work with the current version of OS X. Nice!

ReWire functionality for Intel Macs?

Has anyone heard when LE will add ReWire functionality for Intel Macs? I find it odd that Garageband's ReWire works fine, but LE Express doesn't. That feature was recently added to Logic Pro in the 7.2.1 update. Any word about when us Express users will be able to enjoy the same?

Mac OS X versions 10.6.7 and later have built-in detection of known Mac malware in downloaded files. The recognition database is automatically updated once a day; however, you shouldn't rely on it, because the attackers are always at least a day ahead of the defenders. In most cases, there’s no benefit from any other automated protection against malware.
The most effective defense against malware is your own intelligence. All known Mac malware takes the form of trojans that can only operate if the victim is duped into running them. If you're smarter than the malware attacker thinks you are, you won't be duped. That means, primarily, that you never install software from an untrustworthy source. How do you know a source is untrustworthy?
Any website that prompts you to install software, such as a “codec” or “plug-in,” that comes from that same site, or an unknown site, is untrustworthy.

Follow these guidelines, and you’ll be as safe from malware as you can reasonably be.
